Funeral for Mrs. Rosa Bell Carpenter Lyons, 91, 816 6th Ave SE, who died Tuesday, May 11, 1976 in a local hospital, will be Friday, May 14, at 3 p.m. at Brown Service Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Ralph Bates will be officiating with burial in Decatur City Cemetery, Brown Service directing.
Survivors include two sons, John McCain, Jr., Los Angeles; Timothy C Lyons, Decatur; a sister, Lonie Redden, Sumpter, SC; a brother, Rev Z.R. Carpenter, Birmingham; four grandchildren, three great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bill Stone, Wesley Cook, Donald Branum, Harry Raley, Melvin Ozier, M.R. Olson, and Raymond Hamilton.
Mrs. Lyons was longtime resident of Decatur and a member of Central United Methodist Church. She was the widow of John McCain Lyons, Sr. who passed away July 10, 1960. She was a native of Ashland, Clay County, AL.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m until 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, 1976.

John McCain Lyons, Sr aged 73 of 813 6th Ave SE died Sunday at 7 p.m. in a local hospital where he had been a patient for one day.
Funeral services are to be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Ninth Street Methodist Church. The body is to lie in state from 2 until 3 p.m.The Rev M.H. Harper and W.W. Lovett are to officiate.
Burial is to be in City Cemetery, Brown Service directing. Members of Mr. Lyons' Sunday School Class at Ninth Street Church will serve as active and honorary pallbearers.
The body is to remain at the funeral home until time to be taken to the church to lie in state.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Rosa Bell Carpenter Lyons, Decatur, two sons, Tim Lyons, Decatur; and John McCain, Jr., Los Angeles, CA; one sister, Mrs. Bob Leslie, Goodwater, Ala; one brother, Thomas Lyons, Milton, Fla; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Lyons was a member of Ninth Street Methodist Church. He was a native of Goodwater, Ala.

For a long time I have searched, on and off, for Reverend Zachariah R. Carpenter b. Dec 3, 1877 Clay Co AL.
He was son of William Henry Carpenter,
grandson of James Warren Carpenter & Nancy Garrett,
great grandson of Zachariah Carpenter who went to Harrison Co TX,
gg grandson of Thomas Carpenter of Henry Co GA,
ggg grandson of Abigail Jordan and Unknown Carpenter.
Within the last six months, a grave was posted on findagrave for a Zachariah Rar Carpenter b. Dec 3, 1877 AL who died Mar 31, 1984 in Sumter Co GA. Note the birth date is the same. Zach's WWI Draft registration in Tuscaloosa AL showed that same date and that he had a wife and daughter (their names unknown).
I went to LDS online and did some more searching. I found a Frances Othella Carpenter b.1915 who md Rufus A. Summerford in Morgan Co AL and lists her father as Z.R. Carpenter (mother not mentioned). Now there were several other Z.R. Carpenters in this same line but I have accounted for them. Since we know ZR had a daughter born before 1917, Frances was probably his daughter.

Next I find this marriage:
groom's name: Z. R. Carpenter bride's name: Irene JIRELS marriage date: 24 May 1913 marriage place: Calhoun, Alabama

And I find this DEATH CERTIFICATE name: Hattie J. Carpenter death date: 21 Sep 1973 death place: Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama gender: Female age at death: 84y estimated birth date: 1889 spouse's name: Z. R. Carpenter father's name: ""Henry JIRELS "" mother's name: Lum

I am thinking the Hattie J Carpenter is probably Hattie "I" Carpenter as many transcriptions for the death certs in AL are bad.

Ashland-Mrs. Mindie Etta Carpenter Lee of Ashland, Rt. 2 died Friday at Clay County Hospital after a long illness.
Funeral services will be today at 2 P.M. at Blair Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Parker Officiating. Burial will be in the Olive Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Ruby Lee Oswalt of Ashland, Mrs. Rosa Belle Baugh of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Mrs. Una Mae Perseghin of Dundalk, Md.; two sons, James W. Lee of Margate, Fla. and Benjamin Edwin Lee of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Mrs. Rosa Belle Lyons of Decatur and Mrs. Lonnie Redden of Sumter, S. C. a brother C. R. Carpenter of Birmingham, nine grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be William Henry Carpenter, Timothy Lyons, Pinkney, Burford and Clyde Dison and Leon Jones. The body will remain at the funeral home through the services.
