Descendants of Group 5 Zimmermans / Carpenters

Notes

227. Jacob Zimmerman

John Schmeeckle adds:
Jacob (c. 1784-aft. 1852), son of Christian; m. Catharina Rupp; of Froeningen and Mulhouse, Alsace. His daughter Magdalena had an out-of-wedlock daughter Catherine who married John Zimmerman, son of Elizabeth, daughter of Johannes Zimmermann (#15 above). His son Christian had two sons who married Laubers and stayed in Europe. His son Christian had a son Christian who settled in Livingston and McLean Counties, Illinois, and had two sons.

14
Jacob Zimmermann, son of Christian Zimmermann (#3), was born about 1784.  He married Catharina Rupp 9 Dec. 1805 at Froeningen.  Catharina was a daughter of the late Andreas Rupp and Barbara “Hostetter” of Volgelsheim, Haut-Rhin.  Jacob Zimmermann’s children were born between 1807 and 1824 at Froeningen.  Jacob was living at Mulhouse in 1839, per son Jacob’s marriage record.
Catharina Rupp died 31 Jan. 1840 at Dornach.  Dornach was located right next to Mulhouse, and no longer exists, having been absorbed by Mulhouse.  Jacob’s residence is given as Dornach in his children’s marriage records in 1845, 1848 and 1850.
Jacob Zimmermann, age 64, laborer, witnessed the birth in Dornach of his granddaughter Catherine Rich in 1848.  Jacob Zimmermann, age 68, farmer of Mulhouse, is mentioned in 1852 Mulhouse marriage record of his nephew Johannes Zimmermann.
Children (born in Froeningen):
         i. Catharina, b. 10 Jan. 1807; d. 2 Apr. 1816.
33     ii. Magdalena, b. 7 July 1808; of Dornach 1844.
iii. Anna Maria, b. 27 May 1810; m. Jacob Goldschmitt 1845 at Dornach.
34    iv. Jacob, b. 15 Sept. 1812; m. Anna Maria Schlatter 1839 at Mulhouse.
        v. Barbara, b. 9 Mar. 1815; m. Daniel Rich 1848 at Dornach.
       vi. Johannes, b. 19 June 1818; d. 6 Sept. 1818.
35   vii. Christian, b. 2 Apr. 1819; m. Elisabeth Yoder 1850 at Dornach.
36  viii. Catharina, b. 22 May 1824; m. Joseph Rich 1860 Tazewell Co., IL.

228. Andreas Zimmerman

John Schmeeckle adds:
Andreas (1788-1833), son of Christian; of Blotzheim, Alsace; his wife Catherine Schneider was a sister of the wife of Johannes Zimmermann (son of #9 above). Andreas apparently had no sons; his daughter Catherine married Michael Lauber, a grandson of Christian Zimmermann (#12 above).

15
Andreas Zimmermann, son of Christian Zimmerman (#3), was born 1 June 1788 at Ungersheim, Haut-Rhin.  On 7 Apr. 1819 at Blotzheim, Haut-Rhin, he married Catherine Schneider.  She was born in 1791 in Durmenach Haut-Rhin, daughter of Jacob Schneider and Catherine Stauffer.  Her sister Anna was the wife of Johannes Zimmermann of Lorrach in Baden (#28).
One of the witnesses at the marriage of Andreas and Catherine was Johannes Freyenberger, apparently the future second husband of Catherine.
Andreas Zimmermann died 1 Dec. 1823 at Blotzheim, age 36.  The death was reported by Jacob Schneider, age 64.
Catherine Schneider married (2) Johannes Freyenberger and was living in Folgensbourg in 1842 (per Bourgfelden marriage record of daughter Catherine).
Children of Andreas Zimmermann and Catherine Schneider (born at Blotzheim):
37 i.  Catherine, b. 11 Oct. 1820; m. Michael Lauber 1842 at Bourgfelden.  Michael
Lauber was born 20 Sept. 1816, son of Michael Lauber and Barbara
Zimmermann, daughter of Christian (#17).
ii.  Barbara, b. 8 Apr. 1823.

229. Johannes Zimmerman

16
Johannes Zimmermann, son of Christian Zimmermann (#3), was born about 1796.  He married Magdalena Roth.  He was living at Dornach in 1832 when his son Johannes was born.  He died 14 Sept. 1846 at Pulversheim.  His widow Magdalena Roth died 28 July 1847 at Pulversheim.
Child of Johannes Zimmermann and Magdalena Roth:
38 i.  Johannes, b. 19 Feb. 1832 Dornach; m. Magdalena Schlegel 1852 at Mulhouse.

Magdalena Schlegel

John Schmeeckle adds:
Johannes (c. 1796-1846), son of Christian; m. Magdalena Roth; of Dornach and Pulversheim, Alsace. He had a son Johannes who married Magdalena Schlegel and settled in Clinton County, Indiana, with a large family, but I haven't seen any genealogy of his descendants.

230. Christian Zimmerman

13
Christian Zimmermann, possibly son of Christian Zimmermann (#3), was apparently born about 1763.  Christian’s age is given as 34 in 1797, which corresponds approximately with the age of 44 given in his 1809 death record.  However, his age is given differently in other years:  48 in 1804; 46 in 1806; and 50 in 1808.
His wife was Elisabeth Reschly (Röschlin).  Her age in 1797 was given as 30; age 44 in 1806.  They moved from Ungersheim to Berrwiller about 1800, where they rented the Weckenthal estate.  Christian Zimmermann died 4 Mar. 1809 at Berrwiller.  His widow, Elisabeth Reschly, was still alive in 1827.
Children:
        i. Barbara, b. 6 Mar. 1792 Ungersheim; m. Peter Roth 17 Nov. 1814 Berrwiller.
       ii. Magdalena, b. Feb. 1793 Ungersheim; m. Joseph Roth 23 mar. 1818 Pulversheim;
possibly with son Joseph in Davis Co., IA 1860 census (per Joe Springer).
      iii. Catharina, b. Apr. 1797(?) Ungersheim; m. Jacob Rich 28 Apr. 1819 Berrwiller;
son Joseph Rich  married Catharina Zimmermann (#36).
      iv. Joseph, b. 19 Nov. 1797 Ungersheim; d. 14 Feb. 1818 Berrwiller.
       v. Johannes, b. 29 Sept. 1800 Berrwiller; d. 5 Apr. 1806.
      vi. Anna, b. 25 Feb. 1802 Berrwiller; d. 26 May 1802.
     vii. Maria, b. 30 Mar. 1803 Berrwiller; m. Johannes Roth 25 Feb. 1822 Pulversheim;
apparently to Ontario by 1843.
    viii. Anna, b. 13 Dec. 1804 Berwiller; d. 6 Apr. 1806.
      ix. Elisabetha, b. 31 Mar. 1806 Berrwiller; d. 24 Mar. 1807.
       x. Anna, b.12 June 1808 Berrwiller; m.Jean Ulrich Amstutz 14 May 1827Berrwiller.

Johannes Roth

Apparently moved to Ontarion by 1843.

232. Magadalena Zimmerman

Of Dornach 1844.

33
Magdalena Zimmermann, daughter of Jacob Zimmermann (#14), was born 7 July 1808 at Froeningen, Haut-Rhin.
On 11 July 1844 at Dornach, Haut-Rhin, Magdalena Zimmermann, age 31 [incorrect], gave birth to a daughter Catherine.
“Catherine Zimmerman was born July 6, 1844, at or near Mulhousen [Mulhouse], Alsace.  She apparently came to the United States about 1862 when she was 18 years of age….From one family of her descendants it appears she was born in Dornach which we have been unable to find on the map.” (Milo H. Zimmerman, John and Catherine and Drusilla Mishler Zimmerman Family Register 1843-1974, pp. 7, 16.  Dornach no longer exists, having been absorbed by Mulhouse.)
Proof that Magdalena Zimmermann, mother of Catherine, is the same as Magdalena Zimmermann, daughter of Jacob (#14), comes from the above-mentioned Zimmerman Family Register, which refers to a 1939 letter from Katie Kinsinger stating that Katie’s aunt, Magdalena Zimmerman [mother of Catherine], was the daughter of Jacob Zimmerman and Catharina “Ropp,” and that Magdalena had a brother Jacob who married Magdalena Schlatter, a sister Mary, married to Jacob Goldsmith, a sister Barbara, married to Daniel Rich (as his second wife, no children); and a brother Andrew, who died in infancy.  Katie Kinsinger was actually the granddaughter of Catharina Zimmermann (#36), younger sister of Magdalena (per Joe Springer).
Child of Magdalena Zimmerman:
        i. Catherine Zimmerman, b. 11 July 1844 Dornach; m. John Zimmerman (son of
#44) 19 Dec. 1864 at Livingston Co., Ill.  The descendants of this couple
can be found in the above-mentioned Zimmerman Family Register.

603. Catherine Zimmerman

Born out of wedlock.  See mother's notes.

John Zimmerman

BIRTH:
Born out of wedlock. Father unknown.
BOOK:

233. Christian Zimmermann

The following per John Schmeeckle.
Christian (1768-1805), son of Jacob; of Bourgfelden, Alsace; m. Elisabeth König. His eldest son Christian emigrated to Butler County, Ohio; ancestor of John Schmeeckle. His second son Johannes settled in Henry County, Ohio; ancestor of Dick Zimmerman. Christian's daughters Magdalena and Barbara intermarried with the Lauber family, so much information on this Zimmerman family can be found in John Huppi and Tom Lauber, The Laubers: A Journey of Faith (2000). A preliminary draft of this work, including Huppi's research on the extended Amish Zimmermann family in Baden and Alsace, is online at FamilySearch Catalog: The Laubers, a journey of faith, European genealogy : preliminary draft V — FamilySearch.org
Also:
About 1799, Christian and his younger brother (Johannes?) moved to Alsace where they became tenants at the Michelfelden farm St. Louis, Haut-Rhin, then belonging to Gen. Georges-Joseph Dufour, one of Napoleon's officers. On 16 Feb 1803, he leased a nearby farm in Bourgfelden, Haut-Rhin, belonging to Baron Barbier. Per Richard Zimmerman

17      i.  Christian, b. 1768; m. Elisabeth König; d. 1805 Bourgfelden.

Micheal is an unusual spelling even in German, and it is not known why Elias Zimmerman, the author of this source, used that spelling. On Aug. 18, 1801 at Riedseltz, Lower Alsace, he married Barbe Roggy (Riedseltz civil entries call her family 'Rogi'). She was born on the Diefenbacherhof at Riedseltz circa 1781, and died at Domgermain, Meurthe-et-Moselle June 19, 1832, a daughter of Johannes/Jean Roggy and Elisabethe Eyer. Her mother Elisabethe Eyer was born at Remchingen, Baden, a child of Benedikt 'Benz' Eyer. Two of Michael’s cousins from the Hochburg estate also married at Riedseltz, where civil records were kept in German until 1812. The two cousins, Michael and Johannes, were sons of Michael’s uncle, elder Jakob Zimmerman and Anna Smid: 1) Michael Zimmerman, born in 1780, married Barbara's sister Fronica/Veronica at Riedseltz Sept. 7, 1801; and 2) Johannes Zimmerman married Barbara’s sister Elisabethe at Riedseltz Nov. 12, 1807 (Michael Zimmerman of Denzlingen signed the entry as a witness). The marriages have a greater significance because the Roggy sisters had a brother, Jean, who married Catherine Guingerich and relocated to the Weidesheim estate at Kalhausen. Weidesheim was the site of a number of family events involving Roggys, Engels, Ringenbergs, Guingeriches, and Nafzigers. Thus the Amish Mennonite families at Riedseltz served as links between Baden and Moselle."

Web portal: www.archives.cg54.fr/archives/DefautBureau.aspx?Onglet_ID=888.The birth of son Jacob at Vannes-le-Châtel in the spring of 1818 shows that Michael and his family were living in that French commune at that time. They probably left the Schlatthof at Tiengen the previous fall at the expiration of a standard six-year lease. Daughter Catherine, born in 1820, and son Joseph, born in 1826, both at Vannes-le-Châtel, also prove that Michael and family resided in that commune. (See the entries for Jacob, Catherine, and Joseph for specific citations.) They are known to have moved to nearby Domgermain by 1828, but they probably left Vannes-le-Châtel in 1826, after the birth of Joseph and at the end of a standard nine-year lease.
 91. Archives Départementales de Meurthe-et-Moselle [Archives of Meurthe and Moselle], Etat Civil: Naissances, Mariages, Deces, Years: 1831-1840.The marriage of daughter Marie Zimmermann at Domgermain in October 1828 (see the entry under Marie for more details) shows that Michael and his family had moved to that commune by that year. It seems likely that they had left Vannes-le-Châtel in the fall of 1826 when the standard nine-year-lease expired. Michael and his unmarried children probably left Domgermain for Saint-Valentin in 1832 at the conclusion of a six-year lease
and following the death of wife/mother Barbara Roggy in June of that year (See the Barbara Roggy entry for the record of her death at Domgermain in June 1832.).
 92. Archives Départementales de l'Indre [Archives of Indre], NMD: 1823-1842.Michael Zimmerman signed as a witness to the marriage of Andrew Roth and Barbara Müller/Miller at Saint-Valentin in July 1834, and he was identified as a resident of that commune. However, it is likely he had resided there since 1832, following the death of his first wife Barbara Roggy. It is known that he lived at Saint-Valentin until 1839, when he left France for America.

238. Veronika or Verena "Fanny" Zimmerman

Larry Zimmerman notes from Part One, pp. 274-278; Part Two, p. 8.
Part One, pp. 274-278 Verena Zimmerman was also known as 'Fanny' in America and is found as the formal 'Veronika' on her headstone. She was born Dec. 31, 1789, a daughter of Michael Zimmerman and Anna Maria Zimmerman. She was probably born at Denzlingen, the birth place of her older brother [Michael], but is also possible that she was born at the home of her uncle Jakob Zimmerman at Sexau, the seat of the Grand Duchy of Baden. She died at Morton April 10, 1878, and is buried near her son-in-law Joseph Stecker/Staker in Roberts Cemetery. Her gravestone gives her name as ‘Veronika Roth,’ with the inscription “gest. D. 10 Apr. 1878, 88 Jahre, 3 Mon, 10 Tage alt” (died on April 10, 1878, 88 years, 3 months and 10 days old. In 1807 or 1808 Verena married Nicolas/Nikolaus Roth.Nikolaus Roth died in 1833 (according to son Peter Roth's obituary) or 1834 (according to his grandson Daniel K. Roth's hand-drawn genealogy chart). Widow Verena's oldest daughter, Barbara, married Joseph Stecker's cousin Peter Zehr in Europe and migrated to New York State in 1835.Verena also chose to emigrate. The ship François 1st sailed from Le Havre with only 17 passengers Jan. 26, 1837. It arrived at New York City March 10. Verena is noted on the passenger list as 'Ferenica Roth,' age 47, from Bavaria. Her five accompanying children were Nicolas [Nicholas], 23, farmer; Ferenica [Frena], 16; Anna, 10; Pierre [Peter], 8; and Daniel, 4.In 1837, widow Verena (Zimmerman) Roth traveled from New York City directly to Butler County, Ohio, where she had family connections.Part Two, p. 8 Verena Zimmerman was born Dec. 31, 1789; she married Nicolas/Nikolaus Roth, and became the matriarch of the Roth family in Tazewell County.

Micheal had at least one brother Andrew and a sister Fanny . . . Fanny married a Roth . . . Many of their progeny live in the community of Groveland, Morton, and Panola, Illinois.

Michael Zimmerman states that he became a citizen of Montgomery Township in Woodford County, Illinois in January 1849. His widowed mother, Fanny, lived with her son Michael and his wife Catherine after the death of Andrew in 1841, and Fanny accompanied the family in the move to Illinois. Therefore, it is likely that her death was at Michael's home in Woodford County.
