7276. Vernon Chesley Carpenter

Telephone conversation with Vernon Carpenter on Sunday, October 26,1997:   Vernon said that they lived on the old Carpenter farm fromaround 1923 (that's when his Mom and Dad were married) until 1943.  In1943, when he was 11 years old they moved just the other side ofSubligna, just north of the Cordle's place.   He said that his parentsthen moved to Halls Valley Road, near Trion in March/April 1950.  Hewas a senior in high school and stayed with Matt & Louella Grigsbyuntil he graduated.

Vernon said that he remembers his Dad saying that Grandfather boughtthe farm at the intersection of the Haywood Valley road sometimearound 1918-1922.  This span of years was noted because he said thatGrandfather asked Artie to stay on the farm until he could pay for it.Vernon said that his Mom and Dad were married in 1923, and just alittle while after they were married Grandfather went to pay off thefarm and the guy said that he could not, Grandfather told him that hehad better look at the contract again, so he then accepted the finalpayoff.   Vernon thinks that was about the time his parents weremarried.

Vernon retired June 30, 1991.

October 2, 1998, Vernon had a quadruple Bypass operation, it took 2hours and 50 minutes.  He said the Doctor told him usually theoperation took 4 - 5 hours.

December 7, 1998, Vernon had a section of his Colon removed which was malignant.  Tests of all other organs were negative.  He thinks theygot everything.

Vernon and Peggy both like flowers.  She has Azaleas and Vernon hasRhododendrons.

22 Jan 2000 - Vernon gave me his middle name as Chesley.  He saidGrandfather Noah built the barn around 1937 or 1938.  They cut whiteoak trees in February and March of 1937/38 on the farm on Dry Creekand hauled them to a sawmill, the resulting lumber was then hauled andstacked very near to where the barn was built.  Vernon thinks thatGrandfather Noah sold his farm on dry creek to either Con Kinsey or EdSweatman.

Received a call from Benny on 30 June 2003--- He said that Vernon diedthis afternoon.  Called Vernon's telephone number and talked withRandy his son. Randy said that "Vernon had gone to his Doctor onWednesday, and had an EKG Recorder wired to him and he was asked tolet it record his heart for 24 hours. He took it back and the Doctor(apparently on Monday, 30 June 2003) said that he looked good. Vernonthen returned home and got the newspaper and sat down in his reclinerand he had a heart attack."  Benny called back on 1 July and said thatVernon's funeral was scheduled for this Thursday (3 July) at 1pm.There will be a Funeral Service at the "Chattanooga Funeral Home,North Chapel in Hixson, Tennessee.

9280. Bobby Daryl Carpenter

Poem written by Bobby Daryl Carpenter on 2/29/1992:

"I,m staring out this window
asking you to tell me why
I,ve been given this sentence
but commited no crime.

You gave me no answer
so I took it on by own
to think that sometime
somewhere I,d done somebody wrong.

Suddenly this feeling rushed over me
easing my aching heart
as if to say I,m not punishing
but showing you the way.

This is your road in life
take care to do it right
It's just your turn and
someday you'll understand.

I can't say where it came from
but I know the feeling's right
so I'll make do with my life's road
until my turn is thru."

Bobby Daryl attended Marietta City Schools and was an Air Forceveteran.  He was employed by Northwest Plumbing Co. for seven yearsand attended Northside Baptist Church in Marietta.
