351. Samuel Carpenter

C36 of the book Carpenters A'Plenty.
Known Children: Henry Carpenter and Andrew Carpenter

FATHER:  I am intrigued by that Samuel (of Henry) b. abt 1793 has brothers named ...
Peter b. abt 1780/1790
John b. abt 1785 m. 4 Mar 1804 Elizabeth Gibson
Jacob b. 20 Feb 1790 d. 1850 M. Sarah Carpenter(?) & they had children in MO by 1830.
Calvin b. abt 1795
And in the 1830 US Census of Cooper County, MO – of the 8 heads of households, 5 names match the brothers above. In 1840 of the 3 heads of house, two match the brothers, while the third Jams is not known.
But others believe that Samuel (of Christopher) is the father.  Y-DNA may not help.
Christian CZ Carpenter b. abt 1720/1722 Steffisburg, Bern, Switzerland d. 4 May 1800 , Lincoln, NC - This is the common ancestor with the Samuel Carpenter (of Henry) and Samuel (of Christopher).

Camp Hoffman, aka Point Lookout Prisoner of War Camp.
http://www.plpow.com/PrisonHistory.htm
Point Lookout POW Camp (Camp Hoffman) was established after the Battle of Gettysburg to incarcerate Confederate prisoners. It was in operation from August 1863 through June 1865. Being only 5' above sea level, it was located on approx. 30 acres of leveled land. It was the largest Union prison camp for Confederates. Point Lookout was one of the most secure POW camps, being surrounded on three sides by water from the Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River, with Union cannons pointed toward the prisoners from Ft. Lincoln and guns of Union ships anchored in nearby waters. Only an estimated 50 escapes were successful.
Before the war, Point Lookout was a fashionable resort hotel and a summer bathing place with over a hundred cottages where the elite spent their leisure time.
