" Subligna, GA. - Editor News--As I have seen nothing in yourvaluable paper from our place in some time, I will give you a fewitems. Item No. 7: "Uncle Johny Carpenter happened to a seriousaccident on the 12inst. He was riding to town and when he got nearR.H. Ellis his horse became frightened and threw him. His feet hungin the stirrup and he was dragged about 20 yards by the running horse.He was seriously bruised and hurt, but is thought to be resting wellnow." "Item No 9: George Carpenter and wife have moved down nearAlpine."
The Walker County, Georgia Messenger, dated October 24, 1895, Page 1,reported, "John Carpenter, 70 years or more of age, lived on DryCreek three miles east of Subligna. Monday (October 14, 1895) of lastweek he died from injuries received the Saturday (October 12, 1895)before. In Subligna he fell from his horse and was dragged about 40yards when his shoe came off and released him. He never fullyregained consciousness. All esteemed him."
The Walker County, Georgia Messenger, dated October 24, 1895, "JohnCarpenter, age 70 of Subligna, died from injuries. About a week agohe fell from his horse & was dragged about 40 yards.

"Nancy E. Carwile (Dau of Samuel S. Carwile, Jr.) b ca 1840 inAbbeville Co., SC; d?; m (as his second wife) John T. Carpenter, b ca1820 in NC. He had married first (1) Frances Richardson, and they hadsix children."
"Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter resided in Subligna, Chattooga Co., GA, and hewas a farmer. He was dragged around Subligna by a horse before theanimal could be brought under control, and was killed in thisaccident. Following his death, Nancy Elizabeth (Carwile) Carpenterreturned to Dirt Town in chattooga County to make her home with herfamily. They had no children."

He extracted this from an article from the MilwaukeeJournal in 1972, written by Paul Stokes of the Journal Staff: writtenin the 125th Anniversary Book for the St. John Evangelical Church ofKellner, WI-published in 1990. It reads as follows:
WE ARE TRYING, GRANDPA!
We've been dead so long here on this hill that nobody remembers us.
Can you believe that?
One hundred years or so, and nobody knows that we lived.
But we lived. Yes, indeed. Just like you are living now; eating andsleeping
and breathing and working and loving.
We were Germans, most of us, and we came to this place when it wasrough
and wild. We hacked the stumps off the land and we dug the soil withour
hands to plant things.
We were farmers, and we came across wild seas and dark wilderness to
grow things here.
We came when we were young and strong and looking for a place to think
our own thoughts.
We worked and we helped pull the claws out of this wild country.
We are proud of that.
And there are more of us; but our markers are gone so nobody will ever
again know who we were.
The parallel to this is that Great-Grandfather John T. Carpenter andGreat-Grandmother Frances Elizabeth (Richardson) Carpenter are bothburied (She in 1887, and He in 1895) on a hill across the road fromthe Bethlehem Baptist Church in Chattooga County Georgia. Theheadstones in the cemetery are not visible from the East ArmucheeRoad (a.k.a. Subligna/Villanow Road).
