Jesse Miller
Birth: Sep. 4, 1841
Death: Feb. 22, 1877 The second spouse listed below is a DUPLICATE listing. [Part of the obit] The Body of Jesse R Miller Exhumed Yesterday. Yesterday morning John Carpenter, the father-in-law of the late Jesse R Miller, whose lifeless body was found in Pilkington's pasture on Saturday, the 24th day of February, arrived in this city, accompanied by the wife, mother and sister of the murdered man. They came in the very wagon in which it is supposed the murder was committed. They stopped for some time at the corner of Main and Ohio streets, and it becoming noised (sic) around whom they were, a large crowd congregated about the wagon, and looked for the signs of blood said to exist. The stains of something resembling blood very much were easily discernable (sic) on the under side of the wagon bed and on the bounds. The wagon sheet was also brought in and showed spots of blood, which, to appearances, had been spurted on it, as the spots were small. It became generally known that the body would be taken up for identification, and that the relatives were awaiting the preparation of the undertaker, coroner and attorneys to proceed to the grave yard for that purpose, a large number of persons preceded those most interested. The part[y] arrived at the cemetery at 10:45, the wagon containing the murdered man's relative[s] driving up alongside of the fence near that portion of the potters field, where the body had been buried. The Sedalia Daily Democrat  8 March 1877 "The remainder of the article has some very graphic description, but I thought the above might be okay on the memorial."  One from many, Contributor number 46850525

Nancy Ann Carleton

GRAVE:

Nancy Ann Carleton Carpenter
Birth: Aug. 4, 1860 Henry County Missouri, USA
Death: May 11, 1897 Leesville Henry County Missouri, USA Clinton MO - Nancy Carpenter was born in Henry County August 4, 1860. She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Carleton. She died at her home one mile north of Leesville May 11, 1897. Joined the M. E. Church in 1875 and lived an exemplary Christian life until death. She married Henry Carpenter June 13, 1878. Two children blessed the union and, with a loving husband, an aged and decrepit mother, three sisters and six brothers, mourn her loss. She was a patient suffering with tumorous cancer. Home physicians and city specialists did all they could to alleviate her sufferings but nothing could stay the hand of death. During the last month, her sufferings were almost beyond endurance but she bore them with the greatest fortitude. Her only regret was leaving her husband and children. Johnny, her only son, is just entering manhood and will miss his loving mother sadly. Little Laura is too young to fully realize her great loss but as she grows older will know that she has been denied the greatest blessing earth can bestow. Funeral was at the Tebo church. obit courtesy of Linda Dukes (#46842176) Family links: Parents: James C Carleton (1820 - 1892) Isabella Priestly Carleton (1828 - 1898) Spouse: Henry C Carpenter (1849 - 1929) Children: Johnny H Carpenter (1879 - 1907)* Laura E. John Jonas Carpenter
Birth:  Sep. 11, 1859
Death:  Nov. 19, 1928
John Jonas Carpenter was married to Sarah Catherine Glenn. They had nine children. A son, John Baker Carpenter, died in infancy. The birth and death dates were obtained from my grandmother's Bible, Ida Minnie Lee Carpenter Kale Dellinger. John Baker was born on 26 Oct 1896 and died on 22 July 1897. I am not sure where he is buried. He was 8 months and 27 days old when he died.
I believe that John and Sarah had another child, Monroe M Carpenter, who was born in 1875. The U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedule (1850-1880) shows his death in Jan of 1881 in Gaston County, NC. The cause of death was diptheria. I am not sure where he is buried.
John and Sarah's other children were Nancy Cleo V. Carpenter, Susie Lee Carpenter, William Henry Carpenter, Grover Cleveland Carpenter, Ida Minnie Lee Carpenter, David Monroe Carpenter and Cletus Carl Carpenter.
John Jonas Carpenter's parents were Norm Henry Carpenter and Frances "Fanny" Baker Carpenter.
