2628. John Jeff Carpenter

A descendant of Noah Z. Carpenter, Vernon Carpenter - came across agentleman by the name of Felt Carpenter in the Tunnel Hill area who isa descendant of John Jeff Carpenter.  Vernon talked at length withFelt Carpenter and Felt's daughter's husband Bradley Putnam.  Bradgave Vernon a package of genealogical data that had been prepared byJack Carpenter.  This package consisted primarily of family groupsheets that depicted a fairly large group of people.

James Felton Carpenter was a son of Samuel Carpenter.  And, SamuelCarpenter was the only son of John Jeff Carpenter.  Vernon providedthe following from Felt,  "Samuel was raised by his Stanfieldgrandparents.  Felt said that Samuel was buried at the Wood StationCemetery on the Old Alabama Highway to LaFayette."   The WoodstationCemetery is located on Georgia Highway 151, just north of theintersection of Georgia 151 and 136.  The following information wasextracted from this cemetery on 31 July 1999.

Samuel P. Carpenter, 23 Dec 1879  -  5 Oct 1967
Octavia S. Carpenter, 20 Sep 1855  -  6 Mar 1939   (Sam's Mother)
Edward P. Carpenter, 1918  -  1981
Richard M. Stanfield, 16 Nov 1820  -  7 May 1910  (Sam's Grandfather)
Sarah A. Stanfield, 20 Jan 1834  -  10 Nov 1918 (Sam's Grandmother)
Clifton (son of J.F. & N.M. Stanfield)  12 Nov 1900  -  30 Sep 1905

In attempting to piece together some type of history on John JeffCarpenter, the following was gleaned from various descendants of bothJohn Jeff and his brother Noah Carpenter.  Sometime in mid to late1879, one account says that:  "John Jeff Carpenter went to Villanowwith two of his (Octavia Ann Stanfield) wife's brothers and broke intothe Villanow store and either got drunk or was drunk when theyentered.  Just prior to the three leaving the store, John Jeff passedout and apparently Octavia's brothers then left him there. The nextmorning the owner opened his store and found John Jeff still asleep orpassed out and probably found numerous items missing, as hiscompanions were no where to be found.  The local constable was calledand John Jeff Carpenter probably was immediately taken to jail."

[Note: Octavia's brothers that would have been about the right ageincluded:  Leander Jackson Stanfield, born 5 October 1856; PoseyWashington Stanfield, born 11 December 1858; and Robert harrisStanfield, born 1860.  Her other brother would have been too young,i.e., he was John Foster Stanfield and he was not born until 20September 1870.]

Another account said that, "John Jeff Carpenter was arrested and spenttime in jail.  He was a trustee and it has been said that the daybefore he was to get out, he escaped.  And, that this occurred whenhis brother Noah was about five years old."  Since Noan Z. Carpenterwas born on 12 May 1877 and also that John Jeff's son Samuel was bornon 23 December 1879, Noah must have been about 2.5 years old when JohnJeff was first incarcerated.  "It is believed that John Jeff wasworking on a nearby road gang. That coupled with him being a Trustee, meant that he was able to move about some.  For whatever reason heelected one day to escape.  He went by his parents house on Dry Creekand patted his then five year old brother (Noah) on the head and said,'be a good boy, I'll be gone for awhile'.  It is not known whether ornot John Jeff talked with his Mother and Father."  Based upon theabove information, this event would have occurred in 1882.

Another story, " A gentleman by the name of O.P. Richardson told aboutmeeting and older fellow in Dalton, in the late 1920's or early 1930'swho liked to play the fiddle, and he played it real well.  ThisRichardson fellow suspected that this old man was none other than JohnJeff Carpenter and at different times tried to bring him intoconversations about Villanow, and each time he brought the subject upabout Villanow, the older gentleman would pick up and leave."

"Noah and one of his Richardson's cousins  went to Dalton one time tosee if they could find John Jeff Carpenter, they were unable to findhim or anyone who knew about him."

A trip to the Walker County Courthouse was made on 10 August 1999 inan attempt to find some record of a trial or record of an arrest.  TheCourt Clerk stated that, "our records do not go back that far."

The 'Georgia Black Book' that records the prisoners of Georgia, doesnot even record the surname Carpenter.  In addition, the mortalityschedule for 1880 was checked in both Chattooga and Walker Countiesand there was no mention of a John Jeff Carpenter. Also, areassurrounding both Walker and Chattooga Counties were checked to see iftheir lists of working prisoners were recorded for working in mines orroad gangs, with the mines in Dade County being the primary area. . .no John Jeff Carpenter was listed.

Information from Stewart Stanfield, < stanfields@email.uophx.edu >NOTES FOR JEFF CARPENTER
"Legend has it that Jeff Carpenter never saw his son Samuel.  He leftOctavia and moved to Texas never to be heard from again."

12 January 2003, while searching for John Jeff Carpenter via the LDSsite, found the following:  John J. Carpenter was located in the 1880census in Cedartown, Polk Co., Georgia. (T9-0161, Page 280A)  He waslisted as being 22 years old and born in 1858, Head of Household wasJ.E. Waddey, Supt. of Convicts.  "John J. 2631. Joseph C. Carpenter

Research Notes and Background on Wm. J. / J.C. / Joseph C. Carpenter:

1. The Old Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery has a headstone with thename J.C. Carpenter with the dates 1872 - 1898.

2. The 1880 Census for Chattooga Co., GA records that John T.Carpenter and Frances E. Carpenter had a son named Wm. J. Carpenterwho was 7 years old, (born about 1872).

3. Martha Browning has a note on George W. Carpenter's Family GroupSheet that reads, "George and his brother Joe both died of T.B.  Alsothat Joe was married to Lizzie Johnston, sister to Emma Viola Johnstonwho was married to George W. Carpenter."   It is believed that LizzieJohnston's name was really Mary Elizabeth Johnston.

4. J.C. Carpenter's grave is near to that of John T. Carpenter andFrances E. Richardson.

5. Chattooga Co., GA - Ordinary Court Records (1839 to 1939) forEstates recorded on pages 194 and 331 that a gentleman named Joseph C.Carpenter passed away on 28 January 1896 and left his wife Mary E.Carpenter and one minor child, Elizabeth Carpenter, 1 1/2 months old. There is no mention of other relatives in this Estate SettlementDocument.

6. An Indenture from the State of Georgia, Chattooga County dated 9thday of November 1895 between Mary Stowe, G.W. Carpenter, J. C.Carpenter, and Mrs. N.E. Carpenter of the one part, and J.R. Carpenterand N.Z. Carpenter of the other part.  these people with respect toJohn T. Carpenter * Frances E. (Richardson) Carpenter were:

Mary Stowe - Daughter, married to William J. Stowe
G.W. Carpenter - Son
J.C. Carpenter - Son
Mrs. N.E. Carpenter - Current wife of John T. Carpenter
J.R. Carpenter - Son
N.Z. Carpenter - Son
Corrected spelling for Stoe, i.e., STOWE.

7. The Chattooga County Marriage Record, records in Book 3, Page 38,that Carpenter, J.C., married Mary L. Johnson on 10 February 1895 by:Coats, J.M., JP.  (again, believe the Mary L. should read Mary E. forElizabeth).

Assumptions:

1) J.C. Carpenter, Joseph C. Carpenter and Wm. J. Carpenter are thesame person.

2) Based upon the fact that the Chattooga County Ordinary recordsdocument that on 28 January 1896 a petition was filed by Mary E.Carpenter the wife of Joseph C. Carpenter for money or property forher support and that of her minor child starting on the death of herhusband Joseph C. Carpenter who died on 28 Janaury 1896.  The minorchild, a daughter named Elizabeth was 1 1/2 months old at his death.therefore, that would have meant that she was conceived on or about 13March 1895.  this coincides with the marriage of a J.C. Carpenter anda M.L. Johnson on 10 February 1895 (probably should have read Mary E.Johnston), because this Mary L. Johnston or Lizzie as she was called, was the sister of Emma Johnston, the wife of George W. Carpenter.Time wise this would have been about right, and possibly confirms thatJoseph C. Carpenter and J.C. Carpenter are the same person.

3) As to Wm. J. Carpenter, I can see the following happening: "The 7year old son of John T. and Frances E. was running around the housewhen the census taker came to take the census in 1880.  He heard thelady of the house fondly referring to her son as 'Little William Joe',even though I his name was Joseph C. Carpenter.  Joseph was namedafter one of his mother's brothers, William Joseph Richardson, muchlike two of her other sons.

4) A Will was found in Chattooga County, Georgia on Microfilm Reel #337203 for 1893, that reads:

"Georgia Chattooga County

I Harriet Richardson of said State and County and being of sound anddisposing mind and memory, do make my last will and testament.

Notes: 1) W.N. Kinsey was Martha Eudora Kinsey's Grandfather;  2) F.M.Fisher owned the land where Fisher's Chapel now stands, apparently hedonated the land for the Church.  3) J.T. Gray was married to MarthaEudora Kinsey's father's sister.

Subject: Re: Carpenter Family Website
Cousin Bob, Thanks for getting back with me so quickly. Glad to know we are cousins! Do you happen to know how Joseph died or any other information about him? It looks like he passed away when Francis was only 1 month old, which is why my family doesn't know too much about him. Francis' mother Mary Elizabeth Johnston remarried a Caleb Bowman sometime during or before 1900, as they are listed as married on the 1900 census. Francis grew up with this family and was very close with the Bowman's having several half siblings. She married my great grandfather John on 12/31/1912 as recorded in his Bible that I have. Here is a link to a family group sheet which contains all the details on John and Francis' children. And here is a link to the overall tree which contains lots of information on the family from Francis on down. I have pictures and newspaper clippings and wedding certifcates, etc. attached in the tree. You should be able to see it all for free if you create an account, if you don't already have one. I hope that is helpful and let me know your thoughts on Joseph when you get a moment. Thanks! Cousin Chris

First World War - Registration Card, Serial No. 339, Order No. 166,lists:  Noah Zumon Carpenter, address is: RFD # 1, Gore, Chattooga,GA.  Age in years = 41, Date of Birth = 13 May 1877, White, NativeBorn, Present occupation = Farming, Employer's Name = Working forSelf, Place of Employment or Business: RFD 1, Gore, Chattooga, GA.Nearest relative, Name = Mrs. Minnie Carpenter, address = RFD 1, Gore,Chattooga , GA.  I affirm that I have verified above answers and thatthey are true = Noah Zuman Carpenter (his X mark).  Height = medium,Build = slender, Color of Eyes = Gray, Color of Hair = Dark Brown.Has person lost arm, leg, hand, eye, or is he abviously physicallydisqualified? = No.   Date of Registration = 12 September 1918,Signature of Registrant: R.C. Grigsby.   LOCAL BOARD, CHATTOOGACOUNTY, SUMMERVILLE, GA.

Note:  N.Z. Carpenter could not read or write on 12 September 1918apparently because R.C. Grigsby filled out the WWI Registration Cardfor him.  However, his brother James Rufus Carpenter filled out hisown card.  Why did Noah never learn to read or write?  Noah was bornin 1877 and his mother died in 1887.  His brother James was born in1874.  Could it be that his mother Frances was sick for a long periodof time before her death in 1887 and she was never able to teach heryoungest son to read and write?  If she were sick he probably had tostay home and help take care of her and was not able to go to school. There has been no information that Noah's other brothers or sister wasunable to read or write - it's food for thought.

Noah Z. Carpenter was a memeber of the IOOF (International Order ofOdd Fellows).  I mentioned this to Vernon on 10/26/1997 and he saidthat just after Grandmother died he was going through some papers andfound some papers about IOOF membership.

Vernon said that he remembers one time when they were picking cottonbehind the old shop and that Grandfather was wearing a hat that had abig hole in the front and he had filled it with newspaper.Grandmother said to him, Gee Grandpa, looks like Hitler hit you with abomb.

We moved to Georgia to live with our Grandparents in about 1947.   So,I (Bobby L. Carpenter) knew them from then until their deaths in 1955(Grandfather) and 1959 (Grandmother).

Winona Tudor Hughes wrote on 14 January 1997... "I guess you wonderedwhy I had a copy of your Grandfather's deed.  I inherited from Daddy, the land next to your Grandfathers old place and researched all theold deeds trying to figure the exact spot the corners were.  It wasn'tthe place where Harlan Kinsey lived.  I may be wrong but I think thatplace belonged to your Grandmother's sister and her husband.  YourGrandfather's place, started on the South Side, right in front of theChurch (Fisher's Chapel, United Methodist Church), at daddys fence. It crossed the creek and went to the foot of John's Mountain.  Hisbrother James R. (I always knew him as Rufe).  His property started atthe Church line, North of the Church.  The house where yourGrandfather lived, still stands with some additions and remodeling. The house Rufe lived in on the hill on the other side of the roadburned in the early 1940's after my Great Uncle Warren Elsberry boughtit.  He built another house in the same spot."

"There are some rock levees that your Grandfather built near the creekthat he would have had to spend countless hours of labor on.  When Iwas a child I followed Daddy around the farm getting him to tell methings about the past.  I'm so glad now that I did, because he showedme the levees and told me about Mr. Noah working so hard to buildthem.  Daddy was born on that place in 1900 just above where thelevees are."

In the same letter, Winona wrote, "Did you know that your grandfatherhad another brother named Joe?  Daddy had told me that Joe had gone towork, I don't remember it it was in the fields or a saw mill or whatand had never come back and was never heard from again.  Then in theearly 1950's a man named Lloyd Kenemer came to Dry Creek to live.  Hehad been somewhere out West since he was a young man.  He would cometo our house sometimes and visit.  One day the subject of JoeCarpenter came up and I asked him what he thought happened to him.  Hedidn't answer me at all.  Later on when he knew us better and knew howI loved stories of the past he told me a story (which may or may notbe true).  He said that Joe would go to the fields and work and a man(he would never tell me who) would go to his house and visit.  He saidone day he and another guy were sitting on the bluff over the creekand saw Joe go to the house.  He said while they were still sittingthere the man came back over the hill with someone thrown across hisshoulders.  He said they got scared and ran and never told anyone whatthey saw, but that Joe Carpenter was never seen or heard from again.I begged him to tell me who the man was, but all he would tell me wasthat he and the other guy were afraid to tell and that he was leavingfrom here anyway, so he never told anyone."
