Bishop Carpenter had 16 children. Their sixteenth child was our great-grandfather James Edward Carpenter who fought in the 5th Illinois Volunteers during the Civil War. (I have James Edward’s discharge papers + much information about his war record.)
Bishop and Mary (Polly) immigrated from New Yorkthey had a farm at the outlet of Schroon Lake in upstate New York …they moved to Carroll County Illinois in the 1850s when James Edward was about 12 or 13. Several of the other grown children and their families immigrated to Illinois with the parents and other siblings.
My grandparents met in South Dakota, married there, lived there for a time and then immigrated to central Wisconsin in 1919.
This local branch of the Carpenter family resided in the Town of Easton in Marathon County since 1919. My mother is Marian Rose Carpenter, daughter of Joseph Carpenter and Gertrude Olga Rose Carpenter.

MORE:
Bishop Carpenter born 10/28/1781 Stillwater NY died 9/4/1868 Argo Fay, Illinois Carroll Co
buried Upper York Cemetery, York Township, Carroll Co. and Mary (Polly) Weddle born 5/2/1784 Warren Co NY and died 9/28/1864 buried Upper York Cemetery, York Township, Carroll Co. I have photos of their headstones as well. Note: all of Bishop and Polly's children were born in New York. Many immigrated to Illinois with the family migration. A few of the older children remained in New York where they had married and had homes.] Family notes from the siblings of James Edward referred to their parents as their "elderly parents" and indeed they were elderly when they immigrated to Illinois. It appeared the older siblings often functioned in a parental role with the younger siblings. Dates would indicate that Polly was 31 at the birth of her first child and 54 at the birth of her last child, James Edward.

DEATH: 4-9-68 -- This is either 4 Sep 1868 or 9 Apr 1868.  IGI has 4 Sep 1868.

Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Waddell

BIRTH: Either England or NY.
In 1860 and 1870 US Census with son Alexander.

NAME: Waddell and also seen as Weddle.  Listed as Polly R. in 1860 US Census.

(5 children- 2 girls and 3 boys)

10120. Sylvester Bishop Carpenter

5. Sylvester Bishop Carpenter born 12/13/1821 Died 1886 at age 65.  Married Achsah Potter (2 girls and 2 boys)
(This 5th child was named Sylvester after Bishop’s younger brother who was killed with the falling of a tree. My cousin Ron has found the brother’s grave and headstone.)

10121. George Hudson Carpenter

6. George Hudson Carpenter born 2/21/1823 died 9/1/1886 at age 63. Married Minerva Balcom (4 children - all girls)

10126. Frederick Walker Carpenter

CIVIL WAR Death date. Died he die in the military? See below.

Married Maria L Dunn (3 children - 2 boys and 1 girl)
Fredrick served in the Civil War. He was ill in a hospital in the south (dysentery, I believe). His older brother, Charles Higley went to bring him home. He arrived home at 10 o’clock at night and died at 7 AM the next morning.
This man is DC Carpenter’s ancestor; he is Cecil Paul Carpenter’s ancestor also. Maria remarried a man named Smith.

D.C. Carpenter, a Methodist Minister from Michigan who was a descendent of Fredrick Walter Carpenter. He gave his brother Cecil Paul Carpenter all of his research. DC had communicated for several years with my grandmother Gertrude Olga Rose Carpenter about the Carpenter family history.  Per Sue Kettner

10127. Abigail A. Carpenter

11. Abigail A Carpenter born 3/24/1831 died 4/14/1831 3 weeks old. (There are questions as Fredrick was born 10/15/1831. DC noted questions regarding this child and Martha born in 1833. Cecil and I are unsure of his questions but these dates are strange. We do know that James Edward Carpenter, my ancestor, lied about his age and claimed to be 2 years older than he was when he enlisted in the Illinois Volunteers. Some military records have the incorrect date.
I don’t know if Fredrick also falsified his date of birth or not. I do have photos of
James Edward’s headstone and Fredrick’s headstone. I think the family put the correct dates on the headstones. I will check my photos.)

THE CARPENTER REUNION.

Tuesday and Wednesday, July 11 and 12, 1893, will long remain in
the memory of the Carpenter family. These two days witnessed in
the paternal homestead, now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Ira
Carpenter, a long anticipated and delightful family reunion.
This homestead, specially to the minds of the four sons and four
daughters of the household,  was already consecrated as the
birthplace of more than half of the eight, the only remembered
childhood home of nearly all of them, and the residence of their
revered parents the greater part of their married life.

Into that home Mr. and Mrs. Austin and Harriet Carpenter moved
in the spring of 1849, a few months after the sudden death of
Mrs. Carpenter's father, and Mr. Otis Smith, the husband of her
sister.

To these eight sons and daughters of this household every part
of this house and its surroundings is evermore fragrant with
memory of "life's bright morning hours." Coming into the house
individually is always a pleasure; much more entering all
together, an entire family circle, all that used to cluster
about its paternal hearthstone. So the house was entered the
evening of the 10th of July.

Except the wife of the eldest of the eight, who died some years
since, the concourse included all the wives of the sons and
husbands of the daughters, and all of the eleven living
grandchildren. The group thus numbered twenty-nine in all, and
fully tested the utmost capacity of the hospitable home in which
it assembled.

A short time before the supper, the entire company from the
eldest to the youngest, clustered close together for somewhat
more formal exercises. Miss Nina Carpenter yielded to the wish
of her kinsfolk, and kindly read the excellent essay she gave at
her recent graduation in West Randolph, VT  The Rev. Dr. Palmer
indulged in reminiscences of his long time intimacy with the
family, speaking as follows: "Forty-three years ago next autumn
I first came under this roof and into this home. The father and
mother of this family were then in the midst of their active
lifework. The honored head of the household seemed so venerable
to me then yet only about two-thirds as old as I am now, just
half of what would be his present age were he still spared to
us. But 'forty-three' then seemed to me a very mature age.

I came into this household, I imagine, something of a curiosity
to those I then met for the first time.  Not that it was any
uncommon thing for 'Aunt Fanny' to receive the visit of her
'friend,' 'suitor,' or 'beau.'  Far from it.  But perhaps my
coming was somewhat exceptional. I came fresh from college, not
literally a freshman, but fresh enough, and some of you might
tell us interesting things you said behind my back. I partially
remember some things you said to my face, especially some trials
of wit with me on the part of the youngster Marsh. I clearly
remember Aunt Lucinda's telling me how 'never a dog came into
the house without its being next to impossible to get him to
leave.'  The time I used to linger before I could 'tear myself
away' no doubt seemed long to her. However, I seem to be kindly
received by all the house hold. Not exactly as a member of the
family, at least so long as the then little (?) Gene said to me
'not kite my uncle yet;' and I am glad to be felt to-day
essential to a 'reunion of the Carpenters' Forty-three years
ago!  Later than my first coming to Brookfield, four of the
eight 'olive plants ' were added to this household.  Marriages
have added eight more to the family circle.  Sixteen sons and
daughters gathered June 5, 1886 at the funeral of your sainted
mother. You were then a unbroken band.  All the Sixteen are
gathered today.

You rarely find so large a family circle as yours, without some
'black sheep in the flock,' some 'skeleton 'in the dark closet,
if not conspicuous to all eyes.  If any 'skeleton 'exists in all
your extended household. it has not been revealed to me. " When
Dr. Palmer closed these reminiscences, Mrs. Palmer read the
following stanzas:

"LINES FOR THE CARPENTER REUNION.

'What commotion is this?' all the railroad men say,

'Whence is this great crowd that are rushing today?'

Such bustle. confusion, such greeting and hurry,

Have set all the trains and their men in a flurry.

'Tis the Carpenter reunion, in I have heard say,

That is making the turmoil and bustle today;

They are gathering their clans from north, south, east and west,

To the home of their childhood, the spot they love best.

That home which for four generations has stood,

The house on the hill by the aide of the road,

"Neath the wide spreading tree, under whose grateful shade,

We all in the days of our childhood have played.

That farm in the valley, 'mid meadows and hills,

Where we roamed in the pastures, and drank of the rills,

And picked the wild berries, so large and so fair-

There we wandered at will, building castles in the air.

Can these he the children, with heads badger gray,

'Who have come to the feast of reunion today?

Yes, unchanged in their reverence for both father and mother,

The same in their love for each sister and brother.

The scenes are much changed, but the home is still here,

And on memory's wall are the pictures still clear;

Of the two aged grand-dames, with hearts full of care,

Who lived with the children their pleasures to share.

We miss the welcome of father, so cheerful and bright,

Who e'er made us feel that all would come right,

And the sweet loving voice of the good mother dear,

Who never was wanting to give is good cheer.

Their greetings were hearty, their hearts ever warm

For the boys and the girls they had shielded from harm.

We are thankful so many are gathered to-day

With children, grandchildren, not one makes delay.

'The good Aunt Lucinda with plenty of tin,

And the Palmers come up-you have taken all in,

A nice little family of twenty and nine,

Come forward and form in irregular line.

First comes Marshall the eldest, with step, firm and steady

For every good work, hand and heart ever ready-

We miss the fond wife of his youth by his side,

She is safe in the Harbor whatever betide.

But In heart we rejoice that alone he comes not;

There are two loving daughters to cheer up his lot,

And to-day he will come 'round the family table'

With two faithful children-dear Fannie - pet Mabel.

Next comes Ira, our host, who presides as a judge;

He takes us all in, owing no one a grudge,

With his good wife, our hostess, at whose earnest call,

We come under this roof which has sheltered us all.

And their three loving daughters our warm welcome share;

Nina the eldest, with Geneva the fair,

And Lillian too, with her kind pretty ways,

Comes in for a share of the family praise.

Next Emma, unselfish, for all has a care,

Comes with sweet loving patience, each trouble to share,

With D. R. her fond partner who comes by her side.

A very good husband, but a Jehu to ride;

With those two fair misses come on in their place,

Their blessing and treasure, dear Elsie and Grace.

Then here conies Eugene, who is all of a quiver,

With an eye Out for business on both sides the river,

With his little wife, Maggie, as still as a mouse,

Who whips every fly that Comes into the house.

Petit Jennie has come, "'with Alden, from Rhoda,

And brought their dear treasure, the sweet little Laura,

Some other sweet pets to them have been given,

Who now are at rest with the angels in heaven.

And now here comes Annie. a cook fine and rare,

With Bessie her daughter, so dainty and fair,

With Will K. her husband, counting profit and loss,

Who is said to be fond of a very fine horse

Next fun-loving Clarence, with Martha comes down,

And gentle Irene, with her curls of brown,

And Fay is brought forward with triumph and joy,

Bearing the banner The 'Carpenter Boy.'

Then Hattie the youngest, comes forward with pleasure,

Bringing a very good Gage for her measure;

And this is the list of the Carpenter hand,

No finer troup can you find in the land.

Dear Father in heaven, thy name we would appraise

For these precious friends of our earlier days;

Their memory has helped us through sunshine and sorrow,

To chase away gloom, giving hope for the morrow.

We do not forget them; their love yet we prize;

They look on us still with their pure angel eyes;

The Scenes of to-day will in heart linger long,

And the sweet ties of friendship are woven more strong.

Some friends of our childhood have gone on before,

And are waiting for us on the heavenly shore,

God grant we may meet them, and there ever stand;

United and humble, a penitent band.

During the supper hour, Mrs. L. W. Smith manifested her interest
in the occasion by the generous gift of $100 to each of her
nephews and nieces present, including Mrs. Laura Allis in the
number.

Rehoboth, MA 02769
Dear Tom and Betsy Charnecki:
Although we just met last week, I very much enjoyed my evening at the Perryville Inn and appreciate your help in pointing out the Goff Hall and Carpenter Museum.  I spent so much time in the Trim Room that I missed my plane in Boston but unfortunately the Museum was closed by the time I stopped by.  I know that Tom is connected with the Rehoboth Antiquarian Society and thus hope that he can pass the following corrections and additions to the Carpenter Encyclopedia 2001 CD Project on to John R. Carpenter or whomever is following up on this endeavor.  Neither the printed copy that I reviewed in the library nor the librarian was able to point me in the proper direction for making changes.
Corrections:
(2) There is a misspelling on p. 276 regarding the husband of Lydia Carpenter, person # 2104.  Lydia was born on 6 Aug 1818 in Providence and died 18 Oct 1905 in Hartford, Wisconsin (I have a certified death certificate).  She married John Hawkins Nanscawen (not Nanschaun), son of Caleb and Grace Nanscawen of Cornwall, England on 24 Dec 1838.  He was born 17 Apr 1812 and died 14 Mar 1896 in Hartford, WI (I also have his death certificate) where he had become a pharmacist rather than a farmer.
...
Additions:
Since the Carpenter Encyclopedia seems to be going to some length to document the progeny of the family including daughters as well as sons, I have attached family group files generated by The Master Genealogist software regarding the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of John Nanscawen and Lydia Carpenter (all WORD documents which include footnotes of backup sources where available, not gedcom files since I assume that you will have to reformat whatever you use).  Although Joshua and their father, Caleb, were listed in the Pewaukee (Waukesha County) Wisconsin genealogy based on 1843 taxpayer assessments, I do not have any further information on Joshua's side of the family.
(1) As noted in the JohnHNan.doc file attached, John and Lydia had five children:  Lloyd married but I do not have the wife's name or evidence of any children.  Frederick died in his first year.  William married Isabel McIntosh and had a son, Lloyd, and a daughter, Esther.  Adelia married B. F. Ricker but had no children.  Reginald H. (my great grandfather, who also was a pharmacist in Hartford) married Myrtie LeCount and had three children discussed below.
(2) As noted in the Reginald.doc file attached, Reginald and Myrtie had two sons, John E in 1879 and Frank in 1882, and a daughter, Catherine Belle in 1886, all born in Hartford, WI.
(3) As noted in the JohnEN.doc file attached, John married Mabel Spuhler on 31 May 1905 (just before his mother Lydia's death) and had two sons and a daughter, John Howland in 1906, Frank in 1908, and Dorothy in 1912.   John H. married Evelyn Janssen  on 27 Aug 1932 and had one daughter, Janice, who is currently living in Minneapolis.  Frank married Rowena Kerr on 6 Oct 1931 and had four daughters, all of whom are still living and have their own children and grandchildren.  Dorothy married James Melius in 1937 but her only child, Nancy, died at age four and she herself died in 1943.
(4) Frank married Fanny Charleton on 9 Sep 1914 and had one son, James who just died last August in Santa Ana, California.  Although James had married Gwendolyn Freeman on 30 June 1950, they had no children and she died in 1989.
(5) As noted in the Catherin.doc file attached, Catherine Belle Nanscawen (my grandmother) married Frank R. King on 27 July 1909 and had two daughters and three sons, four of whom are still living (in their 90's).  The attached files, Florence.doc, Esther.doc, FrankK.doc, and RobertK.doc detail the marriages and children of her daughters and sons.  The fifth son, Paul, is still alive but has never married.  Esther is my mother, which is how I happen to have become involved in this Carpenter project.
