He moved from Medway, ,MA. to Attleboro and thence to
Susquehanna,,PA.  Marriage year is estimated.


10704. Cyrus Clay Carpenter

Cyrus Carpenter was the Governor of Iowa.  He was twice elected to the House
of Representatives (Rep.) from 1879 to 1883.
During the Civil War he enlisted as a private but soon was given a commision as
a Captain.  He served on the staff of W. S. Rosecrans, Greenville M. Dodge and
John A. Logan.  He was promoted to Lt. Col. and was in charge of
commissary of subsistence in Sherman's Army on the march to the sea.  He
was mustered out at the end of the war as a Brevet Colonel.

Carpenter, Cyrus Clay, a Representative from Iowa; born near Harford,
Susquehanna County, Pa., November 24, 1829; attended the common schools,
and was graduated from Harford Academy in 1853; moved to Iowa in 1854 and
engaged in teaching and afterwards in land surveying; studied law but
never practiced; county surveyor of Webster County in 1856; member of the
State house of representatives 1858-1860; during the Civil War was
appointed captain of Volunteers March 24, 1862; lieutenant colonel from
September 26, 1864, to July 14, 1865; brevetted colonel of Volunteers
"for efficient and meritorious services" July 12, 1865; mustered out July
14, 1865; register of the State land office 1866-1868; Governor of Iowa
1872-1876; Second Comptroller of the Treasury from January 1876 to
September 1877; appointed railroad commissioner of Iowa March 26, 1878;
elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth and Forty-seventh Congresses
(March 4, 1879-March 3, 1883); was not a candidate for renomination;
again served in the State house of representatives 1884-1886; postmaster
of Fort Dodge 1889-1893; engaged in the management of his farm and in the
real-estate business; died in Fort Dodge, Iowa, May 29, 1898; interment
in Oakland Cemetery.

1793, but that could be off. She married CHARLES FISKE s/o
SQUIRE FISKE born Oct.5 1789 in Cumberland R.I. ALICE was a name used, but
town records say ELSEY. Res. Cumberland, R.I.

"Lewis S. Carpenter was found dead in his bed at Adamsdale. April 28, 1896.
Mr. Carpenter was the son of John and Nancy (Bishop) Carpenter, and was born
and had always lived in the house in which he died.  He was a farmer and in the
pursuit of this calling manuufactured a large quanity of cidar, which was
considered the best.  Indeed "Carpenter's cidar" was well known all the country
round."

NOTE: Civil War Veteran.  "Joseph B. Carpenter of Providence county enlisted Sept. 19, 1861 in company I, enrolled in Pawtucket, R. I., and was mustered into service Aug. 29, 1862: was admitted to Army Square Hospital, D. C., April 12, 1862, returned to duty Oct. 15, 1864 and was mustered out.  He served in the 4th Regiment."
It is interesting to note that his wife died in Feb 1861 and he joined up in Sept 1861.  I wonder about a child?  Did the wife die in child birth?
