Apparently Horace was in the 1880 US Census twice. Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti are about 8 miles apart along route 23. It also helps that the Census dates are different

Subject: Roswell P. Carpenter Records
This information is from the pension records of Roswell P; Carpenter. There is no military data except the dates of service and promotions and death dates. 99 percent of the record is of his parents trying to collect his pension. The records state that his father Justus was not in good health and his son sent all his money from his military service home to help support his parents. And upon Roswell's death his parents had no source of income. As always.. anyone wanting a copy of these records just drop me a line and I will be happy to send you the scanned records. I have them scanned in JPG format, approx 60 pages
Fathers statement states Roswell's date of birth is May 19, 1840
