Subject: Our CARPENTER twig
Hi John
I have had a few interesting emails from Tim WOOTTON of Chicago ,
a descendant of Mary Jane Carpenter ANDREWS 1830-1926
Dau of Cyrus & Hannah CARPENTER nee Jenney, so sister of our
Edwin Reuben CARPENTER who came to Australia
c1853.
He wanted to know how I knew she was a daughter of Cyrus &
Hannah........... In Amos B CARPENTERS Memorial book
this 4th child is recorded as Sally Melisa. There are no Vital
records to back this up but a letter I had from the Brockport
Historical Society ages ago does more or less confirm this and a
few years ago I was sent a scan of a photo of Mary Jane and one
of her daughter, Cordelia, that had been in the keeping for many
years of a newly found CARPENTER cousin here. So that little twig
of the family has correspondence with the Brockport twig.
In giving Tim some info I mentioned the name Chester ( n/a Chet)
CARPENTER several times and what a great help he had been to me
in the very early days of research. He's been in my thoughts
occasionally over the years and I wondered what had happened to
him ........... Nothing really as he still lives in Newport VT
and will be 91 in a couple of months time!
Thru the local historical society I got Chets daughters email
address . Emailed her earlier today.
My contact with him dates back to 1991 . I bought my first
computer in that year thinking that now I'll find out what ever
happened to dddCARPENTER Was no internet as we know it
now but there was FidoNet and many bulletin boards so my
confidence was high ............. It didn't happen ......... I
think he must have stopped the World and jumped off !!
I think I sent you some info on the Aussie twig some 6-7 years
ago. I guess its time for an update ?
Could send you a RTF file or a GEDCOM or both ?
Bye

Did she die when Mary Jane was born ?? Dont think so, as the 1830 census
includs a woman of her approx age in the household of Cyrus. What happened to
her??

death certificate that gives the proper birth date.

I have also wondered whether Jane E. is really his wife given the age
differences. Maybe a niece taking care of him? So far, the evidence I
have located for Cyrus-Jane is the 1870 US census, which does not list
relationships among the household (she "keeps house"). In any event,
there are discrepancies with dates that make it seem unlikely that she
is the mother of William H. and Alice Carpenter, as they are listed as
being born in the early 1840's and Cyrus' wife Nabby L. didn't die until
1857. This presumes no divorce occurred, which seems likely given that
Nabby is buried with Cyrus (and Olivia). Jane is not buried with him as
far as I know. Also, the 1950 census does not list any children in
Cyrus' and Olivia's household, so I'm not sure about William H and Alice
being offspring of them. A William Carpenter, b. 1840 and married,
appears to live next door to Cyrus and Jane in 1870, which might be a clue.

DEATH: roll 868 page 439.  Ancestral File has death as 1850 in Cheviot, OH.
!Number 3598 on page 405 in the CARPENTER MEMORIAL. No family listed in book.

The Carpenter and Related Family Historical Journal, Vol. 5, Winter 1994/1995,
Number 8, page 521, which is a reprint of the April 1966 Vol. 24, #2,
"Bulletin of Cincinnati Historical Society" Genealogy Department, "Take
Everything Coolly and Quietly" by Mrs. William J. Cummins.  Information from
an orginal letter from Ira Carpenter in the possession of Miss Mabel Young, a
granddaughter of Ira Carpenter and Charlotte Littleford Carpenter.

Ira Carpenter was a descendant from a family that was prominent in public
affairs in the Granite State.  Reaching adulthood, Ira went to Virginia and
began to teach school.
In Charlottesville, he married Charlotte Littlefield, whose father
John de Stoven Littleford operated the school in which Ira taught.
Three children were born to them (Mary, Cornelis and John) in Virginia.
He moved to Cheiot, Ohio in 1836 where three more children (Belle, Victoria
and Susan) were born.  Ira's name appears as a teacher in the 7th District
School in Cincinnati.  He later quit teaching to preach Masonry.
He traveled through the south lecturing on Masonry and selling Masonic Regalia.
His daughter Mary embroidered the Regalia using fine chenille thread and thread
made of finely coiled gold wire.
Enamored with the South, Ira in 1850 decided to resettle his family in Pass
Christian, Mississippi.  The letter contains instructions with the classic
husbandry injunction "Take everything coolly and quietly."  The dutiful wife
followed the instructions and then while waiting on the Public Landing of
Cincinati for boarding a New Orleans bound steamer, she excercised her womanly
prerogative of changing her mind.
Back to Cheviot went furniture, horses, carriage, boxes, barrels, Charlotte
Littleford Carpenter and her children.  Ira accepted his wife's decision, but
continued his peripatetic existance, occasionally returning to Cheviot to visit
his family.  Ira Carpenter was killed in an accident in 1856 in Tallahassee,
Florida.  Ira was given the traditional elaborate Masonic funeral and was
buried in Tallahassee, in the south in which he had come to love.
His wife, Charrlotte died in 1893 and was buried in Cincinnati, Ohio.  As for
the children, some remained in Cincinnati, while others moved away.

DIVORCED about 1840 from Justin Carpenter.
Living with son in 1880 US Census.

Clarina Irene Howard Carpenter Nichols (1810-1885) spent most of her adult life as an orator and lobbyist for women's rights and the abolition of slavery. Born in West Townsend, Vermont, she moved west to Kansas in 1854 and then again in 1871 to Potter Valley, California. Having attended a private college and earning a teaching credential, Clarina was an educated woman for her time. She spent her retirement years in Potter Valley where she lived with her son George.  Another son, Aurelius Ornando Carpenter, was father to Grace Hudson. She married a Baptist preacher, Justin Carpenter, in 1830 and had three children: Birsha, Chapin and Aurelius.  While raising the children she founded a young ladies seminary in the state of New York.  She returned to Vermont without her husband in 1839 and began writing for the newspaper, Windham County Democrat. After divorcing Justin Carpenter, she married the paper's publisher and printer, George Nichols, 25 years older than she. --

immediately entered the Newton Theological Seminary at Newton, Massachussetts.
He was ordained a Calvinistic Baptist Minister on February 26 , 1834. Mark
preached at Keene ,N.H. for five years, from aprill 1840 -1845, baptising sixty
people and gaining over thirty new members to the parish. He then moved taking
assingments in southern New Hampshire and Vermont untill finally settling in
Townsend,Vermont untill he died. In 1882, although just passing his eightieth
birthday, he had retained his vigor of youth in a very remarkable degree. It
was common thing to see him engaged in strenous manual labor or riding
horseback at full cantor with the erect and firm carriage of a military
officer. two weeks prior to his death , he was climing a apple tree and a limb
broke. He was trown violently to the ground and badly injured. He had
apparently recovered from his injury, so as to be able to work again out of
doors, and pronounced himself as well as ever. But , on saturday November 11,
1882, the effects of internal injuries showed themselves, and he sank into a
semi-comatose condition ,from which he did not rally. He died at his residence
in Townsend,Vermont Monday November13,1882
he left no dying messages, nor were they needed. But his words, dictated from a
bed of pain, to the Baptist mininsters of New Hampshire, a few days prior to
his death. "Never despair  !, when I entered the ministry in New
Hampshire, fifty years ago, dark clouds seemed to be overhanging the cause. But
with god's blessing on the faithfull labors of the men of that day, the clouds
soon rolled away, and a rich blessing desended upon the churches. So I look
still for a richer blessing in the future.  "
