Notes

7904. Charity Carpenter

Died in aged 41. Leonard and Charity Smith must have died within a short time
of one another as in the 1860 Erie Co, PA Census, Julia is in the home of
Daniel and Phebe Carpenter Pomeroy and Sarah and Harriet were in the home of
Phineas and Judith Carpenter Pomeroy.  Neither of the Pomeroy couples appears
to have had any children of their own, at  least none who grew past infancy.
Daniel and Phineas were born in MA and were brothers.  I have as of 9 June

Family on page 241 & 242.

Per Coles Carpenter himself, he was "wayward and wild" prior to his marriage.
He was led to see the folly of his ways by the preaching of earnest Methodist
ministers and united himself with the church at North Castle.  He soon became
convinced that it was his duty to preach the Gospel.  He became fully satisfied
on this point that nothing could turn him back, so after a brief preparatory
service as a exhorter, class leader, et cetera, he was licensed as a minister
of the Methodist Episcopal Church at the age of 24.  Up to the day of his death
he continued earnestly and faithfully in his arduous, self denying work.  He
was regarded by his fellow ministers as an able, conscietious and godly man.
He was Presiding Elder of the Troy District when he was taken sick, and after a
brief illness, he died at Cambridge.
Coles wife died a few years later in her 65th year.
The family recorded was written out by Coles himself on April 11, 1829 and was
furnished to the compiler of "The Carpenter Family in America" by his son,
Richard Carpenter of Rockford, IL in 1900.
