This cemetery was located across from McDonald's on Buffalo Street in Gowanda, N.Y.
The cemetery was plowed over and the stones discarded.     This cemetery data was provided by Irvine Gaffney, Town of Collins Historian, PO Box 126,  Collins, New York, 14034.

Carpenter, Guy C. d. September 22, 1850 (I question this date as I have their child Perry born 1852)
Carpenter, Harlow, (infant) d. 1850
Carpenter, Polly D., d. July 17, 1875 (I need to find which Polly this is)
Carpenter, Sarah, (infant) d. 1856
Carpenter, Sophia, (infant), d. December 21, 1854 at 3 years, 7 months.

See Wheeler Smith family also buried in this cemetery.

The given names of Guy Carlton were for an English hero from the War of the Rebellion (or better known in the States as the American Revolution).

Sir Guy Carlton, Canada?s 20th governor earned his title when knighted in 1776 for withstanding the American Invasion against Quebec. Had the Americans been successful in that campaign, Canada might have become America?s 14th state in New England.

Historians have given mixed reviews about Sir Guy Carlton?s personality. Some refer to him as mean-tempered and misrepresenting his reportsto the head office, while others characterize him as a ?venerable Irishman with a mild character, honest, virtuous and a good Christian.?

Hi Chelsea!
I most certainly will keep your email address on hand.  I currently live in
Grand Rapids area but born and raised in Ingham County, MI.  Grew up in
Okemos.  Most of my Carpenters are from the Ingham, Eaton areas.  However, my
grandfather moved to Cheboygan County in late 50's (Hugh J. Carpenter).
My family line is as follows:
Franklin Wayne Carpenter (my father - deceased in 1963).
Hugh J. Carpenter (my grandfather - deceased in 1963).
Frank W. Carpenter (my g-grandfather).
Cecil Corwin Carpenter (my gg-grandfather).
Daniel R. Carpenter (my ggg-grandfather born in NY around 1812).
(The first four Carpenter men were born in Michigan)
Daniel's wife:
Sally A. Wilson (born around 1817 NY - died in Eaton, MI age 45 years.)
I'm currently looking for links to Daniel and Sally since I have little
information on them.
Keep this information and I will get back to you late April as I'm leaving
for a vacation and have put my Carpenter records in the file for the time
being.
So glad to hear from another Michigan Carpenter!! Sincerely, Joana.

8011. Abner McNair Carpenter

1800 Census of Augusta, Ontario, NY. Book by Ralph Wood, Alphabetized. Abner is listed as under 5 (Abner b. 1799) and parent Robert Carpenter ashead of the household in the 16-26 age range, and mother (Phebe) also in the 16-26 range.

1810 U. S. Census of Middlesex, Ontario, NY (Augusta had been renamed Middlesex, and also was Yates  in 1821). Film 081387, Salt Lake City Family History Library..  All children are in the home.  See father's documentation for details.

1820 U. S. Census, Bristol, Ontario, NY Film193717, SLC-FHLibrary. See father's documentation.

1830 U. S. Census, Bristol, Ontario, NY Film 017053, SLC-FHL  Abner is listed as head of the household with a wife "over 20 & under 30", and a son and a daughter both under 5. (They were daughter Phebe b.11 Aug 1823, later Mrs. John Welch, and son John McNair Carpenter b. 24 Aug 1828).  They had a daughter, Zulima b. 1826 who had died before this census.  A daughter Hannah was born after the census was taken. Hannah was b. 1 Sept 1830.

The family left NY before the the 1840  census, and went to St. Omar, Decatur, IN with the McNair relatives, and later to Northern Indiana where Sally McNair Finley, Rebecca's sister, lived.

1840 U. S. Census, Valpariso, Porter , IN, 2597, Part 7, Abner is head of the household with 2 sons under 5 (Benjamin Jonas b. 1836; his twin, Thomas Calvin died), and Abner Griffin b. 1838, 1 child age range  from 5 to 10 (Robert Calvin b. 1833, his twin, Daniel M. died), and 1 from10 -15 (John McNair Carpenter), and 2 girls, 1, 10-15 (Hannah b. 1830) and 1, 15-20 (Phebe b. 1823).  Abner is listed as from 40-60 and (wife Rebecca) female from 30-40.

Another daughter Margaret was b. 1840 (after the Census) Jane was b. 1843, and Rebecca M. in 1846 at which it is reported both the baby and Rebecca, her mother, died. Margaret and Jane, daughters of Abner and Rebecca, were raised by the McNair relatives in Willow Hill, Jasper, Illinois.

Letter from a descendant of Jane Carpenter Baulding, child of Abner Carpenter and Rebecca McNair Carpenter.) Miss Blance Cox of RR3 Champaign, Illinois 61820, letter  dated July 17, 1966.  "Yes, I understand my grandmother, and her sister Margaret were living in Indiana when their mother died.  In fact they were only 3 & 6 yrs old.  That was still their home at the death of their father three or four years later.  I found a note that says he was buried in Rolling Prairie Cem. near LaPorte, Indiana. . ."  This would be Abner Carpenter.

Lake , IN, First Marriage Records 1837-1850. F 532.L2, Page 164. SLC-FH Library Abner Carpenter and (second wife), Elizabeth Miller, license 19 June 1847, md. 24 June 1847 by Jno Ball, Justice of the Peace.

1850 Census of Lake , IN, Film 0442935, SLC-FHL  taken 17 Sept 1850.  Elizabeth Carpenter, age 43, is listed as head of the household, and her children (5) are all with last names of Miller, ages 7 to 16. Perhaps Abner died before this census, or was away from home.  Family tradition is that he was killed in a War.  We believe this was his son, Robert who was killed in Civil War.  Abner probably  died before this census as Jane and Margaret, Abner's two small children when Rebeccas died, are not with his second wife.

Abner is also reported buried north of Terre Haute, IN, but there is no marker. Eugene Carpenter, great great grandson of Abner, (through John M, Abner's son Thomas, and Thomas' son Perry Adam, Eugene's father), of Paris, IL  attempted to locate records as his sister Ethel Taylor remembered her grandfather Thomas Carpenter, saying that the Kennedy Cem., in Otter Township, Terre Haute, IN was where his (Thomas') grandfather was buried. This could be Abner Carpenter, but perhaps a grandfather on the other side of the family.   A trip was made in 1992, looking for the burial records of the above named Cem., but records for this cemetery could not be found. There were some that had been copied from readable tombstones earlier, but Abner's name was not among them. The  letter mentioned above, from Miss Cox (a descendant of Jane, Abner's daughter) in 1966, said she found a note saying he was buried in Rolling Prairie Cem., near LaPorte, Indiana.  He might have been buried in  Lake , Indiana as that is the area in which he had been living.  Lake and Porter Counties are next to each other.

A tintype picture of Abner and wife Rebecca was in the possession of Eugene's sister Ethel (Ethel died in Oct. 1994). Before her death, Ethel gave the tintype to her brother Eugene with instructions to mail the tintype to Terilee Carpenter Jensen, also a great-great-grandaughter, in appreciation of all the work she has done on these records.

Rebecca McNair

Abner and Rebecca were related.  Parents of Rebecca were John McNair Jr. and Hannah Allen, who was blind.  Hannah's father, John McNair Jr. was a half-brother to Rebecca's mother's, Phebe McNair's, father who was Robert McNair.

See father and husband's documentation in the Carpenter Record.

15500. Zulima H. Carpenter

Zulima was born in 1826 and died before 1830 as she is not accounted for on any census.

Washington DC Archives--Civil War Records.  A document from the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, DC Sept. 30, 1870. . . for the months of Sept & Oct 1862.  "Driving team for Regt." Role for Nov. & Dec. 1862, reports him "sick at Nashville".  This man "died at No. 19 Gen. Hospital, Nashville, Tenn. Feb 11, 1863 of simple comminuted fracture of both legs, sustained by a leap from a jail window, cause of confinement unknown."  Robert had no children, but his wife Catherine Mason had some by a former marriage. Her father was Jacob Mason b. VA, mother Catherine.

Catherine Mason

First husband was Silas Humphrey (not sure of 1st 3 letters of last name). One records she sent to Washington she said she was div. from Silas, 13 July 1851.

15504. Daniel M. Carpenter

Daniel M. was a twin to Robert Calvin, but died the day he was born.

15505. Thomas Calvin Carpenter

Thomas Calvin was a twin to Benjamin Jonas, but died the day he was born.  The family live in St. Omar, Decatur, IN in 1833, and Valpariso, Porter, IN in 1838.  It is not known for sure where this set of twins was born.

15506. Benjamin Jonas Carpenter

Benjamin Jonas was a twin to Thomas Calvin who died at birth. He grew to manhood, but it is believed he never married.

15510. Rebecca M. Carpenter

Letter from a descendant of Jane Carpenter Balding, Miss Blanche Cox of Champaign, Illinois, April 26, 1965.  ". . .Yes the baby who was born when the mother [Rebecca] died lived only a short time.  i think the Rebuca is a misprint.  It should be Rebeca."

Elizabeth Miller

1850 Census of Lake , IN, Film 0442935, SLC-FHL  taken 17 Sept 1850.  Elizabeth Carpenter, age 43, is listed as head of the household, and her children (5) are all with last names of Miller, ages 7 to 16.

8012. Sarah (Sally) C. Carpenter

1810, 1820, U. S. Census, Sarah is in the home of her parents, Robert Carpenter and Phebe McNair Carpenter with other brothers and sisters, in Middlesex, Ontario, NY.. (Middlesex is now in Yates County, NY).  They lived in Bristol, Ontario. NY in 1820, which is around the end and on the other (west) side of Canandaigua Lake.

1830 U.S. Census of Bristol, Ontario, NY lists William Kaufman 2 males & 3 females, l male under 5 (who is this child?) , 1 male 20-30 (William, the father), 1 female under 5 (Jane), 1 female 20-30 (Sarah), 1 female 70-80, (possibly William's mother, Christine ).

1850 U.S. Census of South Bristol, Ontario, NY. Household 157/160 Wm Cofman (spelled this way) age 51 b. Canada; Sarah 49 female, b. NY; Marquis 14 male, b. NY; Emily age 9 female, b. NY.

1860 U.S. Census of South Bristol, Ontario, NY. Household 31/30 William Kaufman age 60 male, b. Canada; Sarah 58 female, b. NY; Amida 13 (Emile Amida should be 19) female, b. NY; Caroline 15 female. Next door, 32/31 is Marquis Kaufman age 24 (Sally's son) and Mary 20 female.

1870 U.S. Census of South Bristol, Ontario, NY. Household 109/106 Marquis Kaufman age 34 male b. NY; Mary 27 female, b. NY; Wm 2 male, b. NY. Also Natholia Crouch 19 female.  (Mary's maiden name was Cronch, or Crouse.  She is believed to be Mary's sister.)

Letter from Mrs. Emil Stole, Naples, NY to Mrs. Merle Fox, dated 22 Sept 1966, James Cranson McNair was the son of Caleb McNair (Sally's mother's [Phebe's] brother).  Jane and James had 6 children., Marquis and Mary 1 son, 1 daughter.  Caroline and David 2 sons, 1 daughter.

Newspaper Article in Bristol Ontario. NY Town Hall Scrapbook 66, Page 43. "A very enjoyable event occured at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. C. W. Simmons, Tuesday afternoon, the occasion being the birthday of Mrs. Simmon's mother, Mrs. E. Carpenter (Eleanor).  A number of friends were present, among whom were Mrs. E. Carpenter age 73, Mrs. Sardis Simmons, age 71, Mrs. (Sally) Kaufman age 83, and Mrs. W. (Rowena?)Pierce age 63. The old ladies especially enjoyed the occasion immensely, and we can vouch for their entertainment as we all know Mrs. Simmon's pleasant and cordial manner of entertaining her friends." Article about 1885.

Newspaper death notice  in a scrapbook at Bristol, Ontario, NY Town Hall, Book 66, page 123, " KAUFMAN, At Boswell's Corners, South Bristol, April 25, 1888, Sally Kaufman, widow of William Kaufman, aged 86 yrs. and 7 months."

In 1995 an attempt was made by Donna Hellewell of Aptos, California, Elma Carpenter of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Helen Fox of Canandaigua, New York  to visit the Wilder Cem., in Ontario , NY but the brush and trees were so thick that we were unable to even get to the cemetery.  It is back of a nice farm house, but across a stream. The lady who lived in the house said she knew the Cem. was there, but we could not find a way into it.  This is where Sally and her husband, William Kaufman, is burried. The Wilder Cem. is South of  Bristol, on the way to Naples, Ontario, NY.  It is on the left side of the road.  Later, Helen Fox, of Canandaigua, NY was able to get into the Cem. and take photographs of their headstones. The following paragraph seemed appropriate here.

GONE! FORGOTTEN?  The tombstone [picture] at the left is of the stone of Gamaliel Wilder, pioneer settler of Bristol and South Bristol and a soldier of the Revolution.  The photograph shown was taken by former County Historian, Clyde Maffin, in 1968.  Recently, the Historian's Office received several requests for information on the Wilders.  Those requests prompted a visit to Wilder Cem., off Route 64 almost opposite Bristol Mountain.  Unfortunately, the stones of Wilder and many others have been obliterated by the effects of weather.  A common problem, this is the time of year when it is easy to spot cemeteries in need of work.  Many of our old burial grounds, including Wilder Cem., contain the graves of soldiers of the Revolution as well as other pioneers.  If anyone needs a list of county cemeteries (there are 177) it can be supplied by the County Historian.  Our old graveyards are a part of the heritage of "Old Ontario."  Why not take a look at the one nearest you?

From a letter written by Edith Downey of Clarkson, New York (from the Benjamin Carpenter line, third child of Robert and Phebe McNair Carpenter) to Nellie,(Nellie McNair Urtel, Caleb McNair's daughter) dated Jan. 28, 1966 (of Sarah's, [Sally's] line).  She was explaining first about Abner, Robert and Phebe's first child, and then about Sarah (Sally), Nellie's ancestor, Robert and Phebe's second child.   "Your grandmother, Jane Kaufman McNair was a granddaughter of Robert Carpenter and Phoebe McNair.  They had 13 children, the eldest was Abner who married Rebeca [spelled this way] McNair.   Your great grandmother Sarah (Sally) Carpenter Kaufman was their second child.  She married Wm. Kaufman and had 4 children and I believe your grandmother Jane was the oldest of these.  . ."   She went on to say, "The wedding vest was your great-grandfather's, Wm. Kaufman who came from England and became a citizen of the U. S. in Canandaigua.  Mary Pierce Stoll, (whom Jennie remembers so well) has the vest.  She lives directly across from the high school in Naples, New York.  She has a picture of Sally Carpenter Kaufman, her chair and a table, plus snuff box, pocket book of oil skin, and a lot of other things (family keepsakes).  If you are ever in Naples she would love to show them to you, I know.  She is a real nice person.  She remembers your father coming to see her grandmother Carrie Hewitt when she was a littl girl.  Carrie Hewitt and Jane Kaufman McNair were sisters.  I hope I've explained this so as not to confuse you.  I loved that wedding vest.  It is all hand embroidered.  She has been asked to give it to a museum or library (I don't know which) in Canandaigua.  She has one daughter, married to a veteren Perry."  This is in Wm. Kaufman's file also.

Ontario County Times, Canandaigua, NY, viewed at Ontario County Historical Society, Canandaigua, NY. Wednesday March 15, 1876.  The first of the article was about Isaac Wood, then about Mr. Kauffman. " Mr Kauffman was bout 77 years of age at the time of his decease.  He was brought into this town by his parents, who came hither from Canada when he was four years of age, since which time he has resided in or near the same spot, have a few years since purchased a house and lot near the old homestead and moved thereon, the old home reverting to his son.  I have been informed by one connected with the family that the mother purchased some of the old farm in an early day giving in exchange two geese for an acre of land.  Mr. Kauffman was an honest but shrewd dealer, and had long enjoyed the reputation of being in easy and independent circumstances.  He was social and neighborly in his deportment and was much esteemed as a citizen.  He will long be remembered and respected by his old acquaintances.  Benedict  S. Bristol, March 19, 1876"

He is buried in Wilder Cem., which if off Route 64, South Bristol Twp., Ontario, New York.  We attempted to get into the Cem. in 1995, but overgrowth prevented it.  However, after it was cleaned, Helen Fox, of Canandaigua sent us pictures of the tombstones.  See wife's record for other  data.

She has one daughter, married to a veteren Perry."

15512. Kaufman

See 1830 Census.  There is a son under 5.

15514. Emily Armida Kaufman

Md. Chester Gooding--no children.  Bristol marriage records gave Chester Gooding's parents as Chester Gooding and Laura Booth.

C. A. Gooding age 55 & Emile Gooding age 54 are listed on the 1895 Calvin Carpenter Reunion in Athens, Michigan showing they were from Canandaigua, NY. (Calvin was a brother to Sally Carpenter, Emily's mother).

Chester Alphonzo Gooding

1850 U. S. Census, Bristol, Ontario NY.

Chester Alphonzo b. in Canandaigua, NY 22 Feb 1840 and married 15 Nov 1888 Emilia Kauffman.  Chester was a veteran of Civil War having enlisted in Oct 1861 in  B. 85th NY Vol. Service 2 years when as a result of Typhoid Fever he was out in Aug 1863 and died 18 Aug 1897 age 57.

Newspaper article of Allen's Hill, Nov. 19 1888, tells of marriage. Article was in a Scrapbook in Bristol, Ontario NY Town Hall. Book 66, page 177

Marriage records Bristol, Ontario, NY   Father: Chester Gooding, Mother; Laura Booth  Marriage to Emile Kaufman and date we had matched, but not father and mother. (We mistakenly had Ephrim Gooding and Corintha Spencer, but this is wrong!)

C. A. Gooding age 55 & Emile Gooding age 54 are listed on the 1895 Calvin Carpenter Reunion in Athens, Michigan showing they were from Canandaigua, NY. (Calvin was a brother to Sally Carpenter, Emily's mother).

History of Ontario County, NY, Compiled by Lewis Cass Aldrich, Syracuse, NY 1893.  GOODING, Chester A., Bristol Center, was born in Canandaigua, February 22, 1840.  At the age of ten years he moved with his parents to Bloomfield where he lived until 1861, when in October (11, 1861) of that year he enlisted in Company B, 85th New York Volunteers, and served with them two years.  He had been with them a short time when he was attached with typhoid fever, and from that to rheumatism, until he was unfit for service, and was mustered out in August 1863.  (History of Ontario County, NY p. 213 it said he was discharged June 1963). He returned to Canandaigua and engaged in farming and has since followed that occupation.  On November 15, 1888 he married Emilie Kaufman of South Bristol.

8013. Benjamin Cranson Carpenter

1847  Benjamin Carpenter, Justice of the Peace , 1852, Path Master, from South Bristol Town Records, 1838 - 1925.

1850 U.S. Census, South Bristol, Ontario, NY.   Film 444287. Salt Lake Ccity Family History Library.   Household 169/174 Benjamin Carpenter age 46 male b. NY; Eleanor 38 female, b. NY; Helen 17 female; Nancy 15 female; Chas 10 male; Abel 7 male, all born NY. (Eleanor was Banjamin's second wife).  His first was Sylvia Allen, and Helen, Nancy and Charles are children of the first marriage.  Abel and Otisca were Benjamin and Eleanor's children.  They also adopted a girl named Mary.

1860 U.S. Census, South Bristol, Ontario, NY.  Film 803831, SLC FH Library.  Household 116/113 Benjamin Carpenter age 55, male b. NY; Eleanor 47 female, b. NY; Mary 15 female; Abel B. 14 male, and Asman Guptel 12 all b. NY.

Benjamin was one of the four children of Robert Carpenter and Phebe McNair that stayed in NY, and did not go to Michigan.

We visited the Cem., Baptist Hill or Evergreen Cem. in Sept 1995, where Benjamin is buried.  He was 68y4m16d.  His death date there was 1878, but given his age, he died in 1872.   He was 68y4m16d.

Ontario County Historical Society, Canandaigua, New York, viewed death records  Sept. 1995.  Carpenter, Benjamin C.,  226, Ontario County Times, Dec. 18, 1872, age 64, place of death E. Bloomfield.  (Age is different than above.  We have his birthdate, so feel this notation is in error.)

Ontario County, NY, Surrogate Court petition of Eleanor Carpenter of East Bloomfield, regarding the estate of Benjamin C. Carpenter states that Benjamin died in East Bloomfield on the 11th day of Dec. 1872, and left surviving heirs as follows:  Eleanor Carpenter widow, Nancy Davis daughter, of Farmington, Ontario, NY, Charles Carpenter, son, of Naples, Ontario County, NY, Helen Parker, daughter, of Palmyra, Ontario, NY, Abel B. Living with step-son Charles Carpenter in the 1880 US Census.

15520. Mary Carpenter

Family records stated it believed Mary had no children.  She was adopted.

8014. Nathaniel W. Carpenter

1810 U. S. Census, Middlesex, Ontario, NY Film 081387. Salt Lake City, Family History Library. Robert Carpenter and Phebe, Nathaniel's father and mother, have 4 sons and 1 daughter at the time of census. (Abner b. 1799, Sally  b. 1801, Benjamin b. 1804, Nathaniel b. 1806, Calvin b. 1808.  Bestey was b. after the census in Sept, 1810).

1820 U. S. Census, Bristol, Ontario, NY. Film #193717.SLC-FH Library  Robert and Phebe have 5 sons, and 5 daughters. (Abner b. 1799, Sally b. 1801, Benajmin b. 1804, Nathaniel b. 1806, Calvin b. 1808, Betsy b. 1810, Robert O. b. 1812, Margaret b. 1814, Nancy b. 1816 and Rowena T. b. 1819)

1830 U. S. Census, Bristol, Ontario, NY. Film #017053, Page 224, SLC-FHL Robert and Phebe have 5 sons, and 5 daughters, same as in 1820, but Abner is now married and head of a household next door, and Sally is also married and with her husband, William Kaufman.   Robert and Phebe had William b. 1821, and Phebe b. 1823 added to their family so the numbers remain the same, although the family members are different.  Little Christine was b. 1826 but died in 1827, therefore is not on the census. Nathaniel is still alive because the numbers match.  (In 1993 we found Nathaniel's first daughter was b . 1828, so apparently Nathaniel was not in the home. One of the other boys may have been counted twice as often happened for military purposes in the 15 to 20 age range.  We have not found where Nathaniel was in 1830).

1840 U. S. Census, Middlesex, Yates, NY   Film  #017210 page 349, SLC-FHL. Nathaniel is head of the household and the only one named. There were three males besides Nathaniel, 2 under 5 years, and l between 5-10.  There were four  females, 1 under 5, 2 between 5-10, and 1 between 10-15. There were a total of seven children.

1850 U. S. Census, Cohocton, Steuben, NY. taken, 18 Sept.  Household 115/119. Nathaniel Carpenter, 44,  b. NY; Almira,. 40, b. VT; Polly, 16, b. NY; Marquis, 14, b. NY; Albert, 13, b. NY;  Paulina, 10, b. NY; Adalaide, 5, b. NY;  Berry. S or Bessy S, or Benj. S. female, 3, b. NY ( S. sounds like F., so this could be an easy mistake, but this census definitely says female.   It must have been Benj. S. and should have been male because Benjamin F. is on the 1860 census as 12 years old.  If there had been a girl and then a boy, he still would have had to be on that 1850 census to be 12 in 1860!  All the other census are Benjamin F., male, so we are assuming the mistake was in the gender and initial only, and it was Benj. even though it could easily be read Berry/Bessy).

1857, Ontario County Deeds, Archives Building, Canandaigua, Ontario, NY, Book 128, p. 265-267.  Nathaniel gave his residence as Royalton, Niagra, NY. He signed off on the sale of the Carpenter property.

1860 U. S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI  taken 21 June. , Film #803536,  page 623, SLC, Utah-FHL .   20/20. Carpenter,   Nathan W., (Nathaniel), age  53, b. NY; Elvira, female, 49; (Almira in 1850, death record and on tombstone); Fernando, 25, male, (Marquis in 1850);  Pauline A., 18, female; Adalandi, female, 14;  Benjamin F., 12, male.  All b. NY but Elvira b. VT.   Frenando attended a reunion in Athens, Calhoun, MI in 1895 (Calvin Loomis Carpenter Reunion, Nathaniel's brother).  Fernando signed in as a relative, although there was a place to sign if just  a visitor, and said he lived in Plainwell, MI.  This was the way we finally found Nathaniel and then proceeded to find the remainder of  his family!

1870  U .S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI, Film # 552160, SLC-FH Library.  Nathaniel's wife Almira, age 59, is in the home of Chester and Polly Honeywell (Polly is the daughter of Nathaniel and Almira).  Recorded as:  Honeywell, Chester, 35 ; Polly, 35; Almira, 9; Elmer, 1 male;  Carpenter, Almira, 59,  b. VT.  Nathan is supposed to have died in 1864, but no death record has been found to date (1993).  Polly's first husband was William.  We do not know if it is his first or last name, but believe it is his first name.

Almira, wife of N. W. Carpenter,  is buried in Hillside Cem., Gum Plain Twp., Plainwell, Allegan, MI.  Her son Fernando, who was next door to Polly, her daughter, on the 1870 Census, household 173/177, is also buried there with his wife, Helen, and two sons, but there is no record of Nathaniel buried there according to Sexton's records. There is, however, a grave that has no record and Nathaniel might have been buried before sexton records were kept.

In 1993, contact was made with Lois Semens in Lansing, Michigan, a descendant of Nathaniel, who supplied records and pictures.  She and her father were visited in 1993 in Lansing, MI.

Almira Lewis

See Nathaniel's record for Census data.

Royalton Center Methodist Chruch, Bound book in county historian's office, Locksport, Niagara , NY. Sept 1995.   Elmira Carpenter appears on the Methodist Church rolls until Aug. 1857, and her name was taken off "by letter".  Her daughters Polly and Pauline were also on the list.  Pictures of the church were taken in 1995.  Nathaniel's sister, Betsy Carpenter Griffis, and husband, Thomas Griffis, and children, William,, Henry, and Hiram, also appear in these church records.

Almyra was 59 on the 1870 census and in the home of her daughter Polly and Chester Honeywell in Prairieville, Barry , MI.  Her daughter Polly died about 1875, and Almira not until 1888 so she probably was with son Fernando after Polly's death.  We could not find Fernando on the 1880 Soundex for Michigan to validate this assumption. Her name has been recorded as Almira, Elmira, Elvira and Myra on different documents. Almira is buried by her son Fernando and his family, in the Hillside Cem., Gun Plain Twp., Plainwell, Allegan , MI.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. The Plainwell Enterprise, Plainwell, MI, 18 Apr 1888 - Mrs. Carpenter, mother of Fernando Carpenter and Mrs. W. H. King, died about 9:30 Saturday morning and was buried yesterday.

DEATH.  Allegan County Clerk's Office, Allegan, MI, Vol. 2, page 89, death record #852.  Almira died 14 April 1888, 76y6m10d,  parents:  Robert Carpenter and Louise.  On her son's death record (Wm. Riley Carpenter 1830-1920) she was listed a Myra Lewis (Almira on most Census).  We are going to use Lewis, because it is too much of a concidence that her father and her husband's father would have the same name, Robert Carpenter. When she died someone might not have remembered and used Louise, instead of Lewis.   Or they probably have thought they were asked for the names of both parents' fathers, and the person said, Robert Carpenter and Lewis, and the one recording it heard " Louise."   Descendants were found in 1993 and they have confirmed the name is Lewis, and Almira's father was Levi Lewis, mother was Polly Putnam).  Her death certificate is wrong.  She died of pneumonia

15522. Alice Carpenter

1840 U .S.Census of Middlesex, Ontario (now Yates ) NY Nathaniel had a female in his home who was 10-15 (1825-1830).  We have not found this daughter yet. (Descendants of Nathaniel were found in Aug 1933, and their records gave the name of this child as Alice, her date of birth as 1828, and who she married, except it did not give her married last name, only that she married a Daniel A. No last name for her marriage was given.

15524. Achsah Carpenter

1840 U. S.Census, Middlesex, Ontario (now Yates ) NY, Nathaniel had a two daughters  between 5 - 10 (1830-1835).  One was Poll) . Descendants sent her name in as Achsah b. 15 Feb 1832, who md. Daniel W. but did not give his last name.

15529. Darieus A. Carpenter

Age 4

15530. Adalaide F. Carpenter

1850 U. S.Census, Cohocton, Steuben, NY, Adalaide is age 5 and in the home of her parents.

1860 U. S.Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI, Adalandi, female is 14, and in the home of her parents.

MARRIAGE.  Barry County Clerk, Hastings, MI.  Marriages,  Liber. B-38.  Benjamin F. Storr,  age 30,  of Gun Plain Twp., Allegan , MI. married Adelaide F. Carpenter of Prairieville Twp, Barry , MI, age 19, on 9 Nov 1864 in Prairieville, MI .  Witnesses:  Fernando Carpenter, and Paulina A. King both of Prairieville.  Loomis Benson, Mininster.  (Family records sent in 1993 say she married Franklin.  The F. in Benjamin must stand for Franklin, Benjamin Franklin Storr.)

Transcript of above marriage:  Found April 9, 1993 Barry County Clerk's Office, Courthouse, Hastings, MI.  Benjamin F. Storr and Adelaide F. Carpenter:  Filed and recorded December 5 A. D., 1864, D. L. Miken (?), Deputy Clerk, State of Michigan, Barry County.    I hereby certify that on the 9th day of November A. D., 1864, at Prairieville, in the county aforesaid, I, Loomis Benson, joined in marriage Benjamin F. Storr of Gun Plain Twp., County of Allegan, in the State of Michigan, aged 30 years, and Adelaide F. Carpenter of Prairieville, Barry County and State of Michigan, aged 19 years, that the parties did then and there solemnly declare that they took each other as husband and wife and that there were present as witnesses, Fernando Carpenter of Prairieville and Paulina A. King of Prairieville.  Dated at Prairieville this ninth day of November A. D., 1864.  Signed Loomis Benson, Minister.

We have not found Adalaide on the 1880, 1900, or 1910 Soundex for the Census of Michigan in the counties where they would be expected to be. We have pictures of some school children named Storr in the Prairieville, Barry , MI area.  Thus we know a Storr family lived there.  1860 U. S. Census, Barry County, Prairieville Twp., 136/119 Storr, Anna, 66, b. PA, Franklin, 24, b. OH, Isaac, 30, b. OH.  1870 U. S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, Michigan, Storr, Thomas, 58, mw, b. England; Mary, 49, fw, b. OH; Albert, 17, mw, b. MI; Alfred, 17, mw, b. MI.  Also a James Storr, age 50 b. England is in the home of 140/143 John Allen, same town.  Lucy J. Storr, 25, b. PA is in the home 166/170 of Horace Flower also same town.    We did find some Storr families in Eaton , which is the next county East of Barry  There were three families, but they did not seem to match. Their references were:  Vol 19, Ed. 80, Sheet , Line 19, Sheet 6, Line 20, and Sheet 11, Line 87.  These references might be checked further.

We recently found information on Adalaide's brother "Frank's" son's death (Zael's) record that said "Frank" (Benjamin Franklin Carpenter ) lived in Oceola County in 1887 as that was where John Zael was born. We will look in Oceola County for Frank's other children and  to see if Paulina, and Adalaide were in that county also. Family records sent in 1993 Have given us the name of a descendant whom we will contact for further information. 1880 Osceola County census was scanned.  We did not find Adalaide or Paulina.

Benjamin Franklin Storr

1860 U. S. Census, Barry County, Prairieville Twp., Michigan.  134/119  Storr, Anna, 66, b. PA; Franklin, 24, b. OH; Isaac, 30, b. OH.  Not proven this is our Benjamin Franklin that married Adalaide Carpenter, but it may  be.

15532. Mary Carpenter

Mary was age 3.
