Notes

8123. Nicholas Carpenter

Number 8093 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 765.
Family on page 765 & 766 (#1599).
Nicholas emigrated to Canada directly after marriage to St. Sylvester,
Quebec providence, Canada.  There he raised at least 8 children.

MARRIAGE: On my research in Quebec, I (Jerry) have generated a notes file on my
observations regarding the family of Nicholas and his  homestead in St.
Sylvestre, Lotbiniere Cty., Quebec. I drove the area last January (1999)
where he had been granted land under the Seigniory of Beaurivage.  Another
discrepancy is that the notes in your file say that he and Dinah (Sally) left
immediately for St. Sylvestre after their marriage March 18/21, 1821
(ref. North Waterboro Town records. However, in a book
"St. Sylvestre Se Raconte 1821-1978", Le comite des recherches historique
sous la direction de Julien Bilodeau, historien. it says that Nicholas
Carpenter go a land grant of lot #397 in 1827. So there is a question of
further research on whether Nicholas arrived in St. Sylvestre in 1821 or 1827.
This is the source of the homestead information in my notes on Nicholas.
BIRTH: On the birth date of Nicholas b. abt 1797, I believe from the census
records in Quebec which I copied, he was born in
1798.  He was listed as being 63 on this report when he died December 18, 1861.
The only discrepancy on this is that the census was reported to have been
completed before December 18, 1861, so I am mystified as to how this note on
Nicholas's death could have been recorded on this document.
I have all available census copies from Quebec National Archives and it
shows ... in the census that shows the death of Nicholas from a fractured
skull!
!RESEARCHERS:
Finally, do you have some method for crediting researchers in your project?
I am only concerned that my cousin who did a lot of the research on the notes
attached to John, John Henry, and Karl Harrison Carpenter should get credit
in the published version of your CD.  Her name is Laurie Carpenter Rowan and
she deserves some recognition for the original research up to John Carpenter b.
1825. And you (JRC compiler), John L. (Carpenter of NH) and I (Jerry Carpenter)
are the credits on all information from Nicholas b. abt 1797 and back.

Sally or Diana King

NAME: Sally.  However she is listed as Diana King - she was the daughter of
Josiah and Mary Woodsome King per the Carpenter Memorial on page 765.
NAME2: I have a file that is taken from
marriage records in North Waterboro, Maine show the name Sally King, and there
never has been a mention of Diane or
Dinah as is shows in the IGI records (where also Waterloo is shown).  I would
be interested to know the source of this
first name for Sally.  I have all available census copies from Quebec National
Archives and it lists only Sally and in one
case Sarah (in the census that shows the death of Nicholas from a fractured
skull! Submitted by Jerry Carpenter of Bonney Lake, WA on Wed, 14 Jul 1999.

8129. James S. Carpenter

NAME:  A record in Ancestry by karen83616 has the name as Elisha James Carpenter b. 1808 d. 1867. No proof given. Then the same person has James S. Carpenter b. 15 June 1819 d. 23 March 1893. This one has many citations!  I have 15 June 1813 with far far less documentation.

BIRTH:  The birth year noted above is based on the tombstone. He died 23 March 1893 at age 73 years, 9 months and 8 days.  This works out to be abt 15 June 1819.

MAINE
TWENTY-SEVENTH INFANTRY
(Nine Months)
Twenty-seventh Infantry.--Cols., Rufus P. Tapley, Mark F.
Wentworth; Lieut.-Cols., Mark F. Wentworth, James M. Stone;
Majs., James M. Stone, John D. Hill. Most of the members of
this regiment came from York county and were rendezvoused at
Portland, where the regiment was mustered into service Sept.
30, 1862, to serve for nine months. They left on Oct. 20 for
Washington, arriving there on the 22nd. On the 26th it marched
to Arlington Heights, where it remained doing picket duty until
Dec. 12th, when it was ordered to the south of Hunting creek.
Here it relieved a Vermont brigade in the duty of guarding a
picket line 8 miles long, extending from the Potomac near Mount
Vernon to the Orange & Alexandria railroad, and remained here
in the performance of that duty throughout a severe winter
until March 24, 1863. It then moved to Chantilly, Va., doing
picket duty on the outermost line of infantry in the defenses
of Washington. On June 25 it returned to Arlington Heights.
The term of service of the regiment had already expired, but
315 of the officers and men volunteered to remain and if
necessary assist in the defense of the capital against the
forces of Gen. Lee, who had then commenced his great invasion
of Pennsylvania. On July 4, after the result of the battle of
Gettysburg was announced, the regiment left for Maine and
arrived at Portland on the 6th, where the men were mustered out
on the 17th. The 27th left the state with 949 men, and lost 82
men by death, discharge and resignation.
