Isaac Carpenter married Nancy Adaline Perkins by 18 Apr 1849 in Pleasant Valley, IL. She was the daughter of Absalom Perkins.

Little is known of Isaac's birth and early life.  Census records indicate his parents were born in NY.  It is known he lived in the area of the Mormon communities of Ramus and Macedonia. He was close to Absalom Perkin's sons, David, Levi, James (who went by John) and others. When brothers Isaac and James Welch with brothers James and Levi Perkins decided to move west in 1846, they all volunteered for the Mormon Battalion in July of 1846.  They became members of Company C, then led by Captain James Brown, U.S. Army.

When the first sick detachment was sent to Pueblo, Colorado on 16 September 1846, Isaac was assigned to accompany this detachment to protect the sick and women being sent there. The Perkins boys were in this detachment and died due to illness. Isaac wintered in Pueblo and in the spring of 1847 he was release from duty and followed the first pioneer company into the Valley of the Great Salt Lake after traveling to Fort Laramie.

Within two weeks Isaac with David Martin were called as members of an advance hunting party to return to Winter Quarters. They were to supply an ox team of returning pioneers with meat. Isaac is listed as one of the most successful of the hunters.

Isaac arrived in Council Bluffs, Iowa in October 1848 then went onward to Pleasant Valley, IL arriving by the first few days in November.  There he reported to Absalom Perkins the death of his two sons. He described his travels and spent the winter recovering from his journeys. He found work and married Absalom Perkin's daughter Adaline. Their marriage was announced or published in the newspaper on 18 April 1849.

Isaac's daughter Susan was born in Iowa in January or Februarys of 1850. And by May Isaac and his family were heading west.  They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley where Isaac found work. On 20 June 1852 Adaline gave birth and they named the child after her.

Isaac was one of 39 men selected to participate in colonizing Fort Supply on the Green River. Because
of conditions, the extreme cold, inadequate food supply and morale problems, the men left the mission on 14 March 1854 and returned to Salt Lake.

Isaac became disenchanted and after the birth of his son Charles in 1854 he moved to Placerville, El
Dorado County, California. His move way have been based on stories from other Mormon Battalion members who worked and found gold there in 1848 when in route back to Utah. Perkins relatives were also living there and reported that men were needed for work. Isaac worked at mining and by cutting timber until many of the mines closed down.  There daughter Francis was born in 1856 as well as the twins Alzada and Awilda in 1858. At least two children died shortly after birth between 1860 and 1862. Edgar, who would be noted as "Edwd." in the 1880 Census was born there in 1864.

By 1868, Isaac was back in Salt Lake City.  He was not fully accepted and by early 1870 he was in the mining area of Carson City, Nevada.  He worked as a farmer and supplied timber for the mines.  Family tradition is that he became a deputy then an appointed sheriff. He was described by family stories as "a rough old-time western sheriff who boasted of the number of Indians and bad men who had bit the dust as a result of his quick draw." Probably due to his duties as a law enforcement officer or for some other reason, he moved to Colorado and was in Pueblo by the 1880 US Census.  His death has never been determined.

John,
Below is all I have compiled to date on descendants of Wait and Miraette
(HIGBY) Carpenter.  If I come across any additional I will forward it on to
you.  I am trying to find a living descendant of Beecher HIGBY - if you know
of any through Wait and Miraette's line I would greatly appreciate being put
in contact with one.  I am researching an historic building in Essex Co.
that Beecher designed and built.  My e-mail address is staudt@cptelco.net or
they could write me at:
