Alva commenced the iron foundry business in Providence, R. I.,
in September, 1865, with a very small capital, which continually
increased, until April, 1889, when his two sons, William H. and
Henry A. were connected, under the firm name of "A. Carpenter &
Sons." They are now doing a business of $100,000.00 a year at
No. 328 West Exchange St, Providence, where they have the best
equipped foundry in the state. He represented the city of
Providence in the state Legislature in the years of 1891 and
1893 and was elected the second time to serve in 1897 and 1898.2 SOUR S203

January 1852 in Walpole [Walpole County], New Hampshire, son of Albert and
Mary (CARPENTER) CARPENTER. Educated at Rutland public schools. Engaged for
many years in the hotel business, keeping the Bardwell House in Rutland,
retiring in 1900. President of Rutland Savings Bank. Republican.
Represented Rutland in the Legislature, 1896; Senator from Rutland County,
1904; mayor, city of Rutland, three terms. Member of the Masonic fraternity;
Independent Order of Odd Fellows; Knights of Pythias; Benevolent Protective
Order of Elks. In 1874 he [Henry Otis CARPENTER] married [Miss?] Kate E.
MALLORY of Rutland [Rutland County, Vermont]. They have two daughters:

10575. George Edward Carpenter
The parents of George Edward were George Otis and Amanda
(Atmingion) Carpenter, his father's second wife. His early life
was passed on his father's farm in Seekonk. He attended
district schools. In the fall of 1865 he entered the English
and classical school of Messrs. Mowty -& Goff of Providence. He
graduated from the classical department in 1868. He entered
Brown university from which he was graduated with the degree of
A. B. in 1873. He was absent from college one year, 1870/71,
durring which time he studied medicine. He received the degree
of A. M. from Brown University in 1878. After graduating, he
studied medicine with Dr. Sylvanus Pratt of Pawtucket, R. I.,
and attended lectures at the Long Island College hospital at
Brooklyn, N.Y., and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of
NY city; from the latter institution he received the
degree of M.D., March,, 1873. He joined the ,RI
Medical society in March, 1875, and in the following autumn he
commenced practice in the village of Sand Bank, Oswego ,
N.Y., where he remained until April. 1878. On July 1, 1878, he
commenced practice in East Providence, where he has since
remained. He has held the oflice of school committee, town
superintendent of schools, and health officer, in East
