CHAPTER LII.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES.
BOROUGH OF JERSEY SHORE, AND PORTER, WATSON, MIFFLIN (INCLUDING SALLADASBURG), AND PIATT TOWNSHIPS.

JESSE B. CARPENTER, second son of John and Mary Carpenter, was born October 10, 1813, in Woodward township, Lycoming county. He was reared upon the old homestead, and received such an education as the common schools of that period afforded. After he grew to manhood he and his brother secured the patent for the tract entered by his grandfather, a portion of which is still owned by members of the family. In 1866 he purchased his present home of 125 acres in Piatt township, where he has since resided. Mr. Carpenter was married May 20, 1847, to Phebe Ann, daughter of Joseph and Hannah Carpenter of Eldred township. Four children are the fruits of this union: Joseph R.; William B., deceased; John W., and Asher M. Mr. Carpenter is one of the leading farmers of his township, and is a trustee and steward of the Methodist Episcopal church of his neighborhood. Throughout his life-long residence in Lycoming county he has been recognized as an industrious and honorable citizen, a man whose character is above reproach, and whose success has been attained by a conscientious performance of duty. He is a kind and charit-able neighbor, and ever ready to help the needy and afflicted. Politically, he has always been a stanch Democrat, and is also a firm advocate of the temperance cause. Both he and wife are now spending their declining years in the mutual love and respect of home and family, and in the enjoyment of the comforts which their industrious and economical habits have won.

CONFLICT:  I have 2 Eli Carpenters in Cortland county about the same time.  One from CT and the other from NH?  I have them both married to a Miriam or Marion or Mariva.  SEE: RIN 17789 (b. 1795) and RIN 88512 (b. 1793). Are they confused with each other?

History of Homer from Smith's History part 2
The water power at this site is a very valuable one. In 1816 Eli Carpenter came from Tolland, Conn., purchased a share in the water privilege and lands contiguous thereto and put up a fulling-mill and facitities for dyeing and dressing cloth, with carding machine, etc. This establishment was very prosperous for several years and the business was further extended by Mr. Carpenter in the manufacture of carpets of brilliant color, dyed by himself. In the mean time Mr. Crandall's mills had become somewhat imipaired by age and about thebyear 1835 or1836, he became the sole owner of the site and water power, and proceeded to erect new mills. The business revived, but the domestic manufacture of cloth declined yearly and was eventually abandoned. The mills erected by Mr. Carpenter are still standing, but have been much enlarged and changed to meet the growing needs of the vicinity. A large businss is done in the manufacture of flour and feed and in the production of lumber. Alfred Utley succeeded Mr. Carpenter in the mills, following whom came the present proprietors, the Holmes brothers in the saw-mill, and the Cortland Wagon Company in the grist-mills, which are managed for the company by Wm. H. Moore. Mr. Carpenter was a man of energy and business ability and prospered in whatever he undertook. He was justice of the peace a number of times, and died in 1863.

http://www.askart.com/artist/C/meriva_m_carpenter.asp?ID=109727
Biographical information for Meriva Carpenter
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This biography from the Archives of AskART:

The following biography, submitted October 2004, has been provided by Terry L. Carpenter, a Carpenter family historian:

Meriva M. Carpenter was born 28 April 1802 in Ellington, Tolland County, Connecticut, a daughter of Dr. Ruggles and Juliana (Pierce) Carpenter. She married a cousin, Eli Carpenter, who was born in 1794 in Oxford, Grafton Co. New Hampshire, and they settled near the town of Homer, Cortland County, New York in an area that came to be called Carpenterville, now East River.

Eli was a successful miller and dyer, and they were prosperous enough to build a fine house which they filled with art treasures. The noted artist Sanford Thayer painted portraits of Eli Carpenter (displayed in the Phillips Library in Homer) and son Volney Carpenter. Meriva is known to have painted landscapes and miniature portraits for Homer-area residents, some of which reportedly survive in the Homer community.

Among Meriva's children, daughter Marciana Melvina Carpenter, born 2 Dec 1820, was also an artist, and a taxidermist. Meriva Carpenter is interred in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer, New York, the same cemetery where noted artist Francis Bicknell Carpenter, a distant cousin, portraitist of President Abraham Lincoln, is interred.

One published reference to her work is an article by F. F. Sherman: "Unrecorded Early American Portrait Miniaturists and Miniatures" in Antiques, Vol. 23 (January, 1933), p. 12 (cited in Art Index under "Meriva Carpenter, fl. 1843").

Some details in this bio are from a brief typescript biography of the Eli Carpenter family compiled by Katherine Waden Crutts of Cortland, NY, 13 April 1937; the obituary of Marciana Melvina Carpenter, both provided by Esther C. Slater, of Skaneateles, NY, from the files of the Cortland County Historical Society, Cortland, NY; and tombstone inscriptions from Glenwood Cemetery, Homer, NY, provided by Wendy Settle, of Portland, OR.

I'm descended from (above) who was supposedly US Consul to Foo Chow (China?)
during Lincoln's
administration. His daughter Mary S. Carpenter Worden would be my
great-great grandma. Anyhow do
you recall this guy or his geneology ( I think his parent's were Erastus and
Mary). I'd be happy to buy the

William H. Carpenter (1821–1885), was U.S. Consul to Foochow (now Fuzhou), China, during the American Civil War years. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln in March, 1861,[1] and recalled by President Andrew Johnson in December, 1865.[2]

Prior to his appointment to the consulship, Carpenter was proprietor of a livery stable in his hometown of Auburn, Cayuga County, New York and was active in local civic matters, serving as postmaster of Fleming village in the early 1850s,[3] state commissioner for development of the salt springs at Montezuma, New York from 1858,[3] on the first board of directors for the city water works company from 1859,[4] and as a founding member of the Cayuga County Historical Society in 1877.[5]

Carpenter also was active in state politics, identifying with the Republican Party in its formative years, and supporting New York Governor William H. Seward, 12th Governor of New York, United States Senator and United States Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, who became a lifelong friend.[6] After his service in China, Carpenter retired to Auburn, where he lived until his death at the age of 64, on Sunday, October 25, 1885.[6]

Personal
Carpenter was a son of Erastus and Mary (née Taylor) Carpenter, born in 1821 at Auburn, New York, where his father was an early merchant.[7][8] He married Sevira Wethey in 1848, with whom he had two children before her untimely death in 1864.[9]

History
Mustered in: November 26, 1861 Mustered out: August 23, 1865
The following is taken from The Union army: a history of military affairs in the loyal states, 1861-65 -- records of the regiments in the Union army -- cyclopedia of battles -- memoirs of commanders and soldiers. Madison, WI: Federal Pub. Co., 1908. volume II. Seventy-fifth Infantry.—Cols., John A. Dodge, Robert B. Mer-ritt, Robert P. York; Lieut.-Cols., Robert P. York, William M. Hosmer, Robert B. Merritt, Willoughby Babcock; Majs. Willoughby Babcock, Lewis E. Carpenter, Benjamin F. Thurber, William M. Hosmer, Charles H. Cox. The 75th, known as the Auburn regiment, was composed mainly of members from Cayuga and Seneca counties, and was mustered into the service of the United States at Auburn, for a three years' term, Nov. 26, 1861. It embarked for the south on Dec. 6; was stationed at Santa Rosa island and Fort Pickens, Fla., during its first winter in the service, and formed part of the garrison of Pensacola during the summer of 1862. While here Co. K joined the regiment, which was ordered to New Orleans in September. It was assigned to Weitzel's reserve brigade, which had a brisk fight at Georgia landing. Upon the organization of the 19th corps in Jan., 1863, the regiment became a part of the 2nd brigade, 1st division and moved to Bayou Teche, La. It lost 17 in an engagement at Fort Bisland in April, and in the assaults on Port Hudson, May 27 and June 14 it lost 107 in killed, wounded and miss-.ing, the 1st division bearing the brunt of the fight. After the surrender of Port Hudson, July 9, the troops performed garrison duty. From August to September, the regiment served with the reserve brigade of the 1st division; in September it was assigned to the 3d brigade of the same division; in October it was mounted and attached to the 3d cavalry brigade, and during the winter a sufficiently large number of the men reenlisted to secure the continuance of the 75th as a veteran regiment. While the reenlisted men were on furlough, the remainder of the regiment served with the 14th N. Y. cavalry and rejoined the regiment June 28, 1864. At Sabine Pass, the regiment lost 85 killed, wounded or missing and during Nov., 1863, it was stationed near New Iberia and Camp Lewis, La. In March, 1864, the command entered upon the Red River campaign and in July it was ordered to New Orleans. After the regiment was reunited, in June, 1864, it served until the middle of July with the 1st brigade, 2nd division, 19th corps, and then embarked for Virginia, where it became a part of the Army of the James and joined in the pursuit of Gen. Early in the Shenandoah Valley. It was engaged at Halltown, the Opequan, where the loss was 73 killed, wounded and missing, at Fisher's hill and Cedar creek, where it also suffered severely. The original members not reenlisted were mustered out at Auburn, N. Y., Dec. 6, 1864, and the veterans and recruits consolidated into a battalion of five companies, which was ordered early in Jan., 1865, to Savannah, Ga., and assigned to the 1st brigade, 1st division, 10th corps. The regiment served at Savannah until August, and in April, received the veterans and recruits of the 31st independent company N. Y. infantry. It was mustered out at Savannah, Aug. 3, 1865, having lost 106 by death from wounds, and 109 from other causes.

[[Daniel married (MRIN:7427) Chloe Darling-17749 on 6 Sep 1836.
