Last Roll Call Summons Geo. Bowe, Marysville's Last Member of G.A.R.  Final Rites Held monday With Veteran In Charge   "Taps" were sounded on Monday for George D. Bowe, Civil War verteran who passed away at 2 o'clock Friday morning at the home of his son Frank on West Eighth street after an illness of only one week. He was born near Hartford, Conn, on July 18, 1848 and when a small lad moved with his parents to Pittsfield, Mass., where he received his education, and where at the tender age of fifteen years he enlisted in the  service of the Union army in Company I 57th Infantry, serving two years.

As a true "soldier" of fortune, he accepted life as it came, and his was a full and useful life.
In October of 1871 he moved to the state of Wisconsin where on January 14, 1873, he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Carpenter at Neena. To this unon eight children were born, four sons and four daughters. In 1882 the family moved to North Dakota where they took up a homestead near Jamestown, in LaMoure county
Was Successful in Business
Remaining on their homestead forty seven years their struggles through the pineering days were rewarded with a great measure of success. Mr Bowe bcame not only one of the successful farmers of the county in which he ived , but he was in the grain business fronm 1888 to 1918. He was also prominent in political life, serving as county judge of laMoure county for many years and was caled upon to settle many many land disputes that arose among the early settlers of that county. In 1925 he retired from business and lived to enjoy the rewards due him from a full and active life.  He was a member of the Odd Fellows passing through all the state offices of North Dakota and was instamental in organizing  many lodges in the state. He was a Past Grand --------and was sent as represetative to the Sovereign Grand lodge in Detroit, Michigan. He was also an honory member of the Marysville Veterans Club.
In 1929 Mr. Bowe, with his wife and son Frank and wife  came to Marysville where thy have since resided.

"Grandpa" Bowe, as he was fimiliary known bo so many of his acquaintances, possesed a humorous disposition , always  ready for a joke or "friendly" quarrel.  Although he was a semi-invalid for the past five years spending most of his time in a wheel chair,  yet he enjoyed life to the fullest. He had a wonderful memory and retained possession of his mental faculties almost to the end.

Funeral services were held at the3 marysville Funeral Parlors on Monday at 2 p.m., the Reverend L. C. Schultz paying fitting tribute to his live. Burial was in the Marysville cemetery with Spanish American War veterans holding graveside services and many of the the local VFW in attendance.

Gertrude Gilmerof Everett; four grandaughters, Mrs. Helen Miller of Seattle; Mrs. Mildred Balwin of Fargo, ND; Mrs. Adeline Chriatiansen of Finley, ND and Mrs. Dorothy Witt of Bratton, ND.

The passing of Comrade Bowe leaves marysville without a fulltime veteran of the Civil War. J.H. Miller who spends most of his time in Everettbut who is a frequently here, his former home, is the only reemaining Union soldier of the four who were here three years ago.
(Marysville Globe Vol XLV! Thursday, March 4, 1937)

George D. Bowe
A grand old man with silver hair,
Thru curtained windows sitting there,
And as i passed he'd wave his hand
It seems one scarce can understand.
It is just a few short days ago
Since smiling, charming Daddy Bowe
Was sitting in his easy chair
And waved and smiled as I passed there.
But life must come and life must go
The poet says, and ain't it so.
Our dearest ones they've come and gone,
We mourn their loss, but carry one.
He served his state and nation well,
A proven friend as all will tell,
At eighty-nine life's tension snaps,
And bugle sounds are playing taps.
