Dear John R. --- Glad to hear the additions to the English lines CD
project are working out.  Enclosed is the one I needed to work on before
sending.  It is a very interesting line.  I have over 30 pages of
information on them, published an article on them back in 1984 (cited
below), and have been gathering more as it becomes available.  I kept it
brief for the CD, since most of the detail would not be of interest to
genealogists and can be accessed through the publication.  --- Terry
REGARDING: Richard Carpenter or RI, British West Florida and the Natchez
District of Spanish West Florida
Richard Carpenter, born 3 Jul 1729 at Newport RI, died 24 Jul 1788 at

In 1765 Richard moved to West Florida, England's fifteenth American
colony.  He was accompanied by his brother Caleb Carpenter and they were
later joined by their younger brother Joseph Carpenter.  Richard married
first on 2 Dec 1750 at Newport, Rhode Island to Ruth Collins [ABC].  She
died c1776-1782 [TLC].  He married second in 1780 or 1782 to Mrs. Mary

sister's death.
4. Andrew Carpenter, born in 1762, died young.
5. Jabez Carpenter, born in 1764, apparently died young.

Subject: Re: SC Archives for Carpenters

SC (South Carolina) was involved in trade with New England and several New England Carpenters established merchant or mariner outposts in the southern port cities.  The Oliver mentioned in the SC archives was a mariner, possibly ABC #208.
**** The Richard was a merchant from Rhode Island who traveled throughout the southeast -- you can read more about him in my article "Richard Carpenter, Pioneer Merchant of British West Florida and the Natchez District of Spanish West Florida," in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 72, No. 1 (March 1984), pp. 51-62.  He is ABC #621.  ****
The Dan Carpenter in Camden SC is ABC #1525, pp. 216, 370.  (His brother Timothy #1527 was an itinerant Methodist preacher who settled in Tennessee.)  Lucy (Blanding) Carpenter, widow of Phanuel Carpenter ABC #2028, also lived in Camden SC.  The Abiah Carpenter may be ABC #719, who is unaccounted for in ABC.  Margaret and husband George Carpenter lived near Abiah and were probably related, but again, not enough evidence to prove anything.  The later Carpenters in the piedmont counties were from PA, VA, and NC lines.  Lots of interesting possibilities in the South!

Attached is an excel spreadsheet of early SC Carpenters starting in 1719 that I condensed from the SC Archives.
I was interested in the Edgefield group, but noticed a Daniel Carpenter mentioned with a location of Goshen NY and reference to a SC will.  Maybe you know someone who may be interested it that.

944. Dan or Daniel Carpenter

Number 631 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 123.
Family on page 235 (# 242).
He married a Sarah, no last name in the CM.  Another record indicates she was a
Carpenter.  This may be questionable.  See below.
He moved from Swansea, MA to Ashford, CT.  He is called "Daniel" by some
members of his family, but on record it was recorded as "Dan."

Son Jonathan married Rebecca Howard they had 3 or 4 children.
Dan moved from Swansea mass. to Ashford Conn. He is called Daniel by some members of his family, but on record it was recorded Dan.

Sarah Howard

Carpenter maybe her married name.  See husband's notes.

945. Uriah Carpenter

Number 633 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 123.
Family on page 236 (# 243).
For some time Anna and Anne were thought to be the same person, but they
are now known as twins.
He enlisted in the service of his goverment and he bought land in Ashford, CT.

MARRIAGE:  There were TWO Uriah Carpenters in this time period.  According to
my records they both married a Sarah Hayward with the same birth date?
This makes it interesting since they both have a similarity of children!

I believe the Uriah Carpenter born in 1711 is the correct Uriah for Sarah
Hayward.  Billie Floyd listed only one child with descendants.  Anna born about
1746.  A correction was made placing the Sarah of Uriah born 1711 was done
for her descendants. JRC 1/2000.

After Uriah Carpenter died, she married a Mr. Eaton, he was the father of Gen.
Eaton who was consul to Algiers in 1811, and was a Major General of the U.S.
Army and who was made famous in the seige of Tripoli.

MARRIAGE:  There were TWO Uriah Carpenters in this time period.  According to
my records they both married a Sarah Hayward with the same birth date?
My guess is that this Sarah was born earlier than 1718.
I merged the two Sarah's together - I'll let someone else figure this one out!

Died at age 18 year of birth and death estimated.

950. Benjamin Carpenter

Number 634 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 123.
Family  on page 237 and 238 (#244)

This Benjamin and his son Benjamin were on the military roll of a company
formed mostly in the town of Gilsum, under Col. Ashley, in the American
Revolution.  Benjamin enlisted in Elijah Week's Company, raised out of Col.
Ashley's Regiment of Militia in June 1777 to reinforce the Continental Army at
Ticonderoga. They marched 50 miles there and returned home, so ordered on July
3rd and 4th 1777.
Benjamin went a second time and marched to Col. Moody's Regiment at Otter Creek
and returned with the retreating army.  Benjamin of Surrey (probably this
Benjamin) enlisted July 28  (1777?) and was discharged (or his son was) Dec. 17
to recruit the Continental Army and both father and son served 6 months at this
time.

Joanna Hayward

Per a corrective note of page 837 of the Carpenter Memorial, her last name was
not Howard but Hayward.

951. Jotham Carpenter

Number 635 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 123.
His family is on page 238 (#245).
He was constable of Rehoboth in 1735.  A Farmer.
He served as Deacon of the Baptist Church in Rehoboth for a number of years,
and on removing from Rehoboth he was deacon of the Baptist Church in Cumberland until his death.
A petition to the inhabitants of Rehoboth made by Jotham Carpenter and others:
"WE THE SUBSCRIBERS, inhabitants at Palmer's River and other parts of the
township of Rehoboth, doth crave that favor of this town - that you would be so kind to grant us a piece of land for a burying place, school house and pound, there to set up a meeting-house where we may attend the worship of God in our way which we look may be more for our ease and convenience than now it is: and in doing so you will oblige your ever loving friends, -friends, we have paid our part to your meeting house which you did desire of us willingly, and we hope you will be as kind to us in this small request.
The land we desire is an angle of land lying between three cart roads at
the north end of Ebenezer Bullock's land, and containing of about a quater and
a half of an acre."   Dated June 20, 1720.
It was signed by Jotham Carpenter and others, and the same day it was read at the town meeting.
He mentions in his will: Wife freelove, sons Jotham, and Oliver, daughters,
Dorcas Bullock, Sybil Ingalls, Mehitable Mason, Elizabeth Carpenter, Freelove
Whipple and Desire Ballou.

Mayflower Society indicates ...
Copies of pp. 108-110 of a book called The John Billington Family were enclosed.  A footnote on p. 109 says "Contrary to the account in CARPENTER (REHOBOTH) GEN p. 238, 398-9, there is no indication that the sons Isaiah (Isaack in birth record) and Nathan lived to maturity.  The adults described as these sons of Jotham Carpenter do not belong to this family.  The adult "son" Nathan  is a composite of two other men named Nathan Carpenter, one of Connecticut and one of Rhode Island; and son Isaack, as 'Isaiah' is mistakenly identified as an adult Isaiah Carpenter of Vermont. "  NEITHER NATHAN OR ISAIAH ARE MENTIONED IN THE WILL!

In the Carpenter genealogy the wife of Jotham Carpenter, Jr.is given as Mehitable THOMPSON, with the marriage date of May 11, 1728 (245)*, however the record below says that *intentions* were posted 6 April 1728, between Jotham Carpenter, Jr, and Mehitable THURSTON which would indicate a marriage would have taken place the next month.
Vital Record of Rehoboth, 1642-1896. Marriages, Intentions, Births, Deaths, with Supplement containing the Record of 1896, Colonial Returns, Lists of the Early Settlers, Purchasers, Freemen, Inhabitants, the Soldiers serving in Philip's War and the Revolution.           Intentions
**Intentions**
Groom: Mehitable Thurston
Groom Residence: Rehoboth
Bride: Jotham Carpenter, Jr.
Bride Residence: Rehoboth
Int Date: 06 Apr 1728
There was a Mehitable Thurston born to John Thurston and Hannah Carey, the parents of the Sarah Thurston that married John Carpenter in Rehoboth in 1717. The Thurston genealogy gives her as having been married to a Nathaniel Huntington, but with no date given, and I found no other information on this marriage.
What does the (245) mean after this marriage record given in "A Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in America"? If is a number relating to any kind of documentation,  I couldn't figure it out by using the on-line version of the book.

I then found the information on John Tompson.  He was married
twice, Elizabeth & Hannah.  He first lived in Reading, Middlesex Co.,
MA and then  Rehoboth.  His parents were George & Sarah
Tompson.  George was probably a  Scots prisoner from the Battle
of Dunbar who was sent to Massachusetts in  1652 and settled at
Lynn.  I have to do some more verifying on this point.   But it
would explain why info on this family is hard to find.  Many
histories  have been done on the pilgrims and Puritans and other
early immigrants, but  only recently has anything been collected
on deportees.>>

Number 638 in the Carpenter Memorial on page 124.
Married to Jabez Rounds, April 26, 1733.

been married to Hezekiah Hix in 1738.  The children of Jacob and Desire were
born in July 1754 and 1756.  The marriage date assigned on page 80 was probably
for Jacob's first marriage.
