Alfred Madison Carpenter / Roxie Carpenter ca 1830
Posted by: bonnie Kershaw (ID *****1214) Date: February 07, 2005I am looking for info on my great-grandfather, Alfred Madison Carpenter, born in NY Mar 24, 1830. Supposedly he was the youngest of 10 siblings. The oldest was a sister named Roxie. His mother was born in RI. I would love to have info on his parents and siblings. I am willing to share info on his descendents (I have quite a bit). Please respond or email me directly at bkershaw@direcway.comThanks,Bonnie Kershaw

More comments from Bonnie on topic line above ...
Then last summer, I got in touch with cousins previously unknown to me who confirmed Alfred Madison's birth date, but said he was the youngest of 10 children. His oldest siser's name was Roxey (or Roxie), and that had been married previously in New York, but that spouse's name was not known.
...
I reread my family data, and his first wife's first name was Nettie, but the last name is not known. He moved to Iowa in 1864, and that was after his first wife's death. Also, family data indicates he was born in Madison Co, NY. His oldest sister, Roxey Ann Carpenter, was married to a man whose last name was Luther, and they had a son named Oras Luther.I may try to find something on the death of Nettie Carpenter between 1845 and 1864, figuring he would be 15 at least before marrying. I also may try finding marriage data on ___Luther and Roxey Ann Carpenter somewhere in the 1820-1840 time range, figuring if she was the oldest of 10, she may have been 10-20 years older than Alfred....
TLC: Thanks for the additional detail -- it's very helpful. In Madison Co. NY in 1850 there is an Asa Luther with wife Roxy Ana. She was age 37, born c1813 in NY. They have three children, Esther A. Luther (born c1834), Mary Luther (c1839), and son Oremus Luther (c1841). This looks like A.M.'s sister. If so, the lead to Madison Co. NY appears accurate, which narrows down the search a lot....
TLC: The 1870 census also adds more clues:1870 Madison Co. NY, LebanonAshel Luther, 67, NYRoxy A. Luther, 56, NYEster A. Luther, 37, NYOrsamus Luther, 26, NYNancy Carpenter, 74, NY, "at home"Rose Sweetland, 50, NY, "at home"Daniel Sweetland, 13, NY, "at school"Ashel should probably be Asahel.Nancy Carpenter, born ca. 1796, if the census record is accurate, would be old enough to be Roxy A.'s mother if she married young, age 17-18. Her and Rose Sweetland's annotation as "at home" implies they are living with relatives....
Terry,Thanks again for your efforts to help me.The info on Nancy puts her at roughly the same age (within a year or 2) of W. Carpenter mentioned in the 1860 census. I suppose it is possible that Nancy and W were married and were Roxey's parents. Perhaps W. died between 1860 and 1870. If they were married, though, wouldn't it be reasonable to expect to see both their names as living in the household with Roxy and family in 1860? I wonder if the 1860 census shows Nancy anywhere in the area, maybe with another of the 10 children that were supposedly in family....TLC: Every little detail provides a lead. The 1860 census shows them again in Madison Co. NY:Asel Luther, age 57, born in VT, a farmerRoxana Luther, 47, NYOrsemus D. Luther, 18, NYW. Carpenter, 65, NYAsel might properly be Asahel.W. Carpenter is about old enough, if the census is accurate, to be Roxana's father. If he married at age 18, that would have been ca. 1813 - the year she appears to have been born. Or he could be an older brother, a cousin, or some other relation living with them in his elderly years.
NAME: Mariah in 1900 US Census. Born Mar 1850. 6 children born, 5 living. 27 years married.
BIRTH: In the 1880 US Census birth location is OH. In the 1900 US Census, it is WI.
The 24 Mar 1851 birth date in the IGI has WI as birth state. The 1900 US Census has March 1850.
Both Maria and her husband have the same birth date as 24 March???
A Rachelle Cromer on Ancestry has birth locations as "Fall River,WI or Hardin Co.,OH"

I sent for Charles' death certificate at the NY Vital Statistics. There is no death certificate for Charles on file there. I have a copy of his will leaving everything to his wife Harriet A. and son, Arthur D. to share and share alike. The will is witnessed by Russel W Palmer of Napoli, and F. E. Champlin of Napoli. Paper copies are in Carpenter notebook.
Josiah Southwick (1823-1915) married Sophia Smith b. 1 Oct 1798 d. 1880. I believe Sophia is Priscilla Smith's sister. Priscilla is Charles' mother.
The following was sent to me by Diana Southwick Crippin ggrand daughter of Josiah:
Here is a note from Josiah Southwick's journal written in the spring of 1876:
The friendly order of Good Templars, helped me a good deal in forming acquaintances. The lodge is quite an active one. Their entertainment is good. Toward the later part of the term, one Saturday afternoon I walked about 3 miles out into the country to visit my father's cousin, Charles Carpenter. I stayed there all night. The next day they took me to meeting at Napolii. It was love feast day. I was invited into the choir. Went up and sang with Lizzie Frasier. After meeting she introduced me to a Miss Carrie Daymon, a graduate from Female College and a splendid girl too, to chat with on the street, for we had quite a while to wait before the Old Folks were ready to go home.
Harriet is living with her Son, Arthur Devere in the 1900 fed census in
Arapahoe Denver Colorado, and in Seattle WA in the 1910 census living separately from her son, who is also living in Seattle, but with 3 of his children.
Edwin, Maria and Bertha are buried in The Mount Pleasant, Knight, or Scrabble Hill Cemetery, West Becker Road, Collins, NY (data taken from the stones in 1971). I have a hard copy and it is online from www.deathindexes.com
