A carpenter by trade.

NEWSPAPER: Item from Bellwood Gazette dated July 24, 1896:  "The
young friends of Merle Carpenter met at his parents home Saturday evening
to celebrate the nineteenth birthday of Merle.  After a good time was
spent with talking, the party was invited into the dinning room and
served ice cream and cake.  Then the room was cleared and games were
indulged in until a late hour, or early if you please.  All claim to have
had a good time.....  ONE WHO WAS THERE."
SOURCE:  Bellwood Gazette, 1896.
Merle was a quiet, easy going man who married late in life.  He married
Luella Claire Taylor when he was fifty two years of age and she was age
thirty eight.  They lived in a white victorian house across the street
from the Methodist Church and Bellwood School.  Merle was a carpenter and
worked on many homes in the area. He owned a farm north of Bellwood which once
belonged to his father Judson.
His son Keith remembers working with him durings school vacations.  One
of the homes he reroofed was the Bell Family Home which belonged to the
founder of Bellwood.  Merle also owned a rental home in David City, which
stands today in good condition,(1998).  Merle's children remember
citizens of Bellwood who would tell them what a hard worker their father
was, even as a young man.  "When there was work to be done he was always
there."  SOURCE:  His son, Keith "M" Carpenter (Feb. 1998).

SSN 507-12-8772
Merl's death certificate lists his occupation as "farmer" His business
as, Agriculture.  However, "Merl worked on his father's and other farms
as a young man and he inherited his father's farm land.  His children
Lynn Carpenter, Merlene Brandenburgh, and Keith Carpenter all verify that
he was a Carpenter by trade and repaired and roofed many of the homes in
the Bellwood Area.  Another mistake on the Death Certificate, his wife is
listed as M. J. Carpenter, it was Luella Minetta (Taylor) Carpenter.  The
attending doctor was, J C Pryor of David City.  Cause of death listed
was, Coronary occlusion.
