OKay - you are making me think. this is what I am thinking of doing. I was thinking of documenting the case for a family with the history of military service, even though they are quakers. And using the fact that James was disowned for marring out of faith, and yet did not rejoin for 15 years - so how staunch of a quaker was he? Read on and then tell me if you think I have a good argument. And if you can help me identify who Thomas Carpenter is who lived near him in Harrison, Westchester County, NY and served with him in the war I would appreciate that.   :

This is what I have in My Family Treemaker:  Silversmith and physician.  James CARPENTER was born 19 Sep 1754 in Scarsdale, Westchester, NY. He died 21 Apr 1812 in Purchase, Westchester, NY. Number 89 in the Carpenter Family in America, 1901 book. Family on page 115 & 116.  He was a silversmith by trade and later became a physician.
He was a Patriot and served in the 4th Regiment, Westchester County, New York Militia.

James and his wife Freelove requested that their 3 (THREE) children be admitted as members of Purchase Meeting, 02-03-1796 - James aged about 13, Enoch 10, and Ezra 7.  This is a Friends or a  Quaker Organization of Westchester County
James married Freelove TOWNSEND-, daughter of Benjamin TOWNSEN D- and Elizabeth Weyman on 5 Sep 1779 in Long Island, NY. Freelove was born 14 Feb 1761  She died 8 Jan 1837 in Purchase, Westchester, NY.

What do I know?
Both James and Thomas show up together in the 4th Reg. and also on all Census data in Westchester County NY, town of Harrison (1790, 1800, 1810) I am not sure who Thomas Carpenter is - but think he is one of James's older brother's sons. He is the only James that is showing up on the census data. They lived in this county and township all their lives. The DAR said that James was such a common name - how do I know this is mine. However they fully agreed with my documentation that James Carpenter, born in 1754 was my gg grandfather. Both James and Thomas are found in the book under pensions and Elijah is also listed both with the 1st regiment and with pensions.

I've written to the county archives and they can only find one document. It was a journal entry recording the fact that James had given someone a tour of the Purchase Meeting cemetery in preparation for a family burial. They said that many of their earlier materials had been destroyed in the Rev. War. They indicated that many battles were fought in the area.

I have Rev. Doc. from the Gov. Archives.  showing him in "sick bay" at Ft. Ticonderoga 1775. I have proof that the Purchase Meeting house was used as a field hospital.

More of what I know: The children seemed to be spaced three years apart
Children include: Betsy 1780, James Townsend 1783, Enoch 1786, Stephen 1788-1788, Ezra 1789, Abigail 1792, Job 1794, Edna 1797, Townsend 1800

Perhaps joining in 1796 would allow Betsy to marry. I notice they did not ask that she be admitted. Or the younger lads. Maybe girls were not included. Betsy married David Carpenter son of Joseph and Elizabeth Carpenter. Joseph is James' older brother.

Freelove was a member of the Purchase Monthly Meeting, Westchester County, NY.  (Quaker) Her parents were Benjamin and Elizabeth (Weyman) Townsend. Benjamin was born in 1814 and was the son of Daniel Townsend and Freelove Dickenson daughter of Samuel Dickenson, His mother was Elizabeth (Howland) Dickenson daughter of Mayflower passengers and pilgrims, John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley. Elizabeth Tilley's parents John and Joan (Hurst) Tilley were also on the Mayflower.  They died that first hard winter leaving 14 year old Elizabeth an orphan.
Benedict Carpenter and James Carpenter are listed as the bondsmen for settling Benjamin Townsend's estate in 1775, showing the families are interconnected.

Notes from the Purchase Monthly meeting: James and his wife Freelove requested that their three children be admitted as members of the Purchase Monthly Meeting 02-03-1796. James aged 13, Enoch 10, and Ezra 7.

Children include: Betsy 1780, James Townsend 1783, Enoch 1786, Stephen 1888-1788, Ezra 1789, Abigail 1792, Job 1794, Edna 1797, Townsend 1800

3332. Judith Carpenter

Thomas Carpenter was a witness at her wedding.  No further information known on
this family.

3333. Marthew Carpenter

NAME: CORRECTION: Not Matthew, but Marthe or Martha or Marthew.
Matthew was mentioned in his father's will in 1792, but not in his mother's
(Leah) will in 1806.  He may have died in that time period (likely) or have
moved to Missouri.  No further information is known.

E-MAIL: From: Sue Date: 25 August, 1999.
Just wanted to give you a bit of info I have.
There is a bit of confusion in your data.  Joseph did not have a son named
Matthew but he DID have a daughter named Marthe or Martha or Marthew.
Her name is spelled similar to the name Matthew and this caused the
confusion. She may have died young.  But she is listed as a daughter in
his will. I have a copy of it somewhere.  Each daughter got 10
shillings in his will, which seems to be a rather minor amount, although
he may have given each a dowry when they married.
Mary Carpenter married Robert Viors/Viers/Voiers (the name is spelled
many different ways) in Botetourt 1/7/1784.  I have a notarized copy of
the marriage record.

3335. William Carpenter

William was mentioned in his father's 1792 will, but not in his mother's 1806
will.  William sold land inherited from his father to Jacob Persinger in 1800.
He possibly moved to Missouri after this sale.  No further information is
known.

3336. Abigail Carpenter

She moved to Greenbrier County, VA about 1773 with her husband and she was
still alive in 1792.  No further information known.
Could she have married a second time to a Maloney? No proof given though.

1246. Frances Elizabeth Carpenter

NAME: Francis or Frances. Spellers often misspelled Frances as Francis in the
1700s.

John Mann

SEE: Virginia Pioneer by David Glassburn, a book published in 1964.
John Mann is said to have emigrated from Ireland in 1730.   He served as
Ensign in Captain Cunningham's Company of Virginia Rangers under Colonel Boquet
in 1764 and was deceased before 10 Feb. 1780.

E-Mail from Donna Carpenter 8-27-98 regarding John Mann's first wife.
E_Mail con. 9-22-98.
John Mann took the "Oath of Importation" in Orange Co. Va. on 17 April 1735. He
declared himself a Citizen of Great Britain and a native of Ireland. The family
being Presbyterian, he no doubt came form Ulster. John probably landed in
Philadelphia and may have been in Pennsylvania, and Virginia several years
before taking the oath in 1735. No record of his wife, however his youngest
son, Thomas born shortly before or after 1735 and it is assumed John's wife
was in Virginia.
Indications are that his other three sons were born in Ireland.
In the last part of the 1700's, two Mann brothers, Asa & Moses moved to
Kentucky.  William Mann, and his family stayed in Virginia.  Taken from a
manuscript compiled by W. E. Pullen.

BY PAUL THOMAS MOWREY.   Born abt 1720 per above book.
Children per the above book are: Thomas (b. abt 1740), Solomon (b. abt 1745-50)
Amos (b. 1 Feb. 1754), Jeremiah (b. 1755-1757)), Benjamin (b. late 1750's),

Margaret (b. abt 1762), Agnes (b. abt. 1766), Joseph (?) (b. abt 1775 - might
have been a grandson), John (b. abt. 1764), and Sudna Elizabeth (b. abt 1765).
Children before the above book data was added: Thomas*, Samuel,
Benjamin*, Jeremiah*, Isaac, Libby**, Jesse*(?), Nathan(?), Nicholas(?),
and Benjamin.    *=Match with above book.  **=Match with Elizabeth above.
Please note the wide range and discrepancies of the children of this family.
Many are misplaced.

NOTE: On 11 April 2000 Terry Lee Carpenter of Texas explained as a side note
how his name came on the above book.  I think it is appropiate to mention it
here. This is a partial excerpt from Terry:
"Another point I would like to make, is that the book on this family that
was published by Paul Mowrey is his work, which he put my name on as a
co-author simply because I helped him gather much of the basic
information -- the interpretation is strictly his though.  He states
right up front that we differ on some of the lineage as he presented it,
but the specific differences are not always highlighted.  I have the
utmost of respect and admiration for Paul Mowrey -- he is an outstanding
person and historian, who has given the facts his best interpretation
based on his personal knowledge and he is entitled to his opinion, just
as Don Norman is, and you and I are -- It is a free country, thanks to
people like you and others who have fought and struggled to keep it this
way! I hope this is some help. Regards, Terry."

E-MAIL: From: RICHARD CARPENTER
To: John L. Carpenter
Date: 30 April, 2000
... If you haven't got a copy of "Border Settlers of Northwest Virginia"
by Lucullus V. McWhorter, a life of Jesse Hughes, I suggest you do
so. It has lots of information on the life of Jesse Hughes,
Indian fighter, and associates, such as Jeremiah Carpenter. Excellent reading!
Now to the descendants of Sudna and Solomon Carpenter. You show a marriage
date of 1740, VA.
If this Solomon Carpenter is son of Joseph Carpenter, then the date is wrong.
The records state that Joseph Carpenter came from NY in 1746 with most of his
children, then unmarried.  He received a patent for his land in 1750.
Mattie Bell Carpenter Ross, 1974, in her compilation "Some Descendants of
Joseph Carpenter and others", says Solomon Carpenter, born 1725 in New York,
son of Joseph Carpenter, married Sutnew --, perhaps daughter of Peter Wright.
She also writes, "Family researchers have established that there were three
separate branches of the Carpenter family in North Carolina.
These are (1) Quaker descendants of Samuel Carpenter of Philadelphia,
(2) descendants of Dr. Henry Zimmerman of PA-Germans, who changed their
names to it's English meaning, 'Carpenter',
(3) descendants of early VA settlers William and Simond Carpenter of England."
It appears to me that you have posted some of the information from Don Norman
and Donna Tivener, both of whom have listed quite a bit of incorrect,
unproven information!
Quoting from Chalkley's records, (available on line at VA library
website) ......
In 1764, Joseph Carpenter divided 464 acres equally between his sons Joseph Jr.
and Solomon.
In 1773, Solomon sold 160 acres to his brother in law John Mann
In 1779, Jeremiah Carpenter of Greenbrier bought of Moses Mann 160 Acres
In 1787 Thomas Carpenter bought 115 acres on Potts Creek
In 1784, David Glasburn bought of Thomas Carpenter 50 acres on Jackson's River
On Nov. 19, 1766, Joseph Carpenter and William Whesley were directed to survey
a road from Fort Defiance and Handley's Mill. Other men ordered out were
Solomon, Thomas, Nathaniel, Zopher, Joseph Jr., and a second Thomas
Carpenter and others.
Morton also states in "Annals of Bath County", "the Joseph Carpenter who came
from England as an indentured servant, and lived for seven years with
Luftus Pullen, was not related to the other families.
He settled in Little Valley about 1790 and reared twelve children.
Now, you show, if I'm reading right, 17 children of Solomon Carpenter and
Sudna Hughes!!!!!!!!!!! Hardly believable, even for those days!
There is no Carpenter researcher to my knowledge, that lists 17 children to
this marriage!
Agnes Carpenter is probably one of the Harrison County Carpenters, related to
Nicholas.
Also Margaret Carpenter, probably the same.
Thomas "Jack" Carpenter has not been proven to be of Joseph Carpenter's family
line.
No. 6 and no 14, both Benjamin Carpenter?
No 6 is probably one of the Amherst Carpenters, again, not proven to be related
to Joseph Carpenter no 10 No record of any Nathan Carpenter.
A mistaken records shows Kate Carpenter married to Nathan.
The records prove Kate's husband was Nicholas Carpenter, probably Jr.
no 11 Amos----born in New London, CT. 1754, again misplaced.
no 13 Nicholas, probably of German descent.
no 17 John Carpenter, probably related to Nicholas.
John, if I am wrong on any of my above assumptions, I will be glad to apologize
and change my records! Terry and Paul have set me
straight on several of my conclusions, (not all).
I know that you are a Yankee and don't know much about us southerners, but we
can be gracious at times!
LOL It is said that southern hospitality is an inch deep and a mile wide!~
Seriously, I have been to your website and it could very well lead astray a
new searcher. There are many now on the internet and they are putting any
data they find on their ancestry program and putting it out on the internet.
Just check Ancestry.com and you will see what I mean.

John,
It appears that this court date will help more closely pinpoint the time of death for Solomon
who marr. Sudrah Hughes ?  It seems pausible to me that this would have been the Solomon on Potts Creek.  Would a case concerning this Solomon move into the Greenbrier Court ?  I suppose that you have some evidence
of Botetourt being the place of death.

). Amos served in basicly the same outfits as his brother Solomon, except for
Captain John Lewis' Company of Botetourt Volunteers. Amos suffered from " shell
shock " caused from his expierences in the Revolutionary War. It is not known
if he and his first wife had children; however those by his second wife are.
Their are many decendants still living in Meigs County, Ohio (created from

Notes for RUEBEN LEE CARPENTER , SR.:
RUEBEN, John & Thomas were listed on the 1803 GA tax roll.

HENRY,  John & Thomas were listed in the 1805 Lincoln Ga Lottery.

Rueben L Carpenter Sr. was supposedly listed as a farmer in Edgefield Co.,
South Carolina.  His son Thomas was in Henry Co Georgia durnig the 1820 and
1830 census.  Thomas did a lot of land dealings in the Land Lottery.  He too
must have been a farmer as in different years his land was auctioned off.  His
son Thomas M. Carpenter and James Warren also have land records in GA.
Surprisingly, their is a $1500.00 bond between THomas (the father) and John
Wilkens in which the agreement states that John Wilkens will take guardianship
of Sallie, David Jered and John Harlen who were orphaned.  There seems to be a
lot of Zachariahs and Rueben Lee Carpenters.  Trying to figure if they were
children, brothers or fathers is difficult.  I have taken my best guess at
putting them where I think they belong based on dates, hearsay, stories and
land transactions (which would mean they would have to be old enough to buy,
etc.).

NOTE: The following notes are a duplication of RIN 5337 - Thomas Carpenter b. abt 1740 VA/NC. Y-DNA has indicated a mismatch with Group 2. Descendants of Thomas are listed in Group 13.

DEATH: Either he or his wife died either 6 Aug. 1803 or 6 Oct. 1803.
He was identified as the "eldest son of solomon" in a court case om 5 May 1791
and served during Lord Dunmore's War in Captain John Lewis' company of
Botetourt Volunteers in 1774 with brothers; John, Solomon and Jeremiah.  He

was identified as "son of Thomas Carpenter and heir of Solomon Carpenter" on
this date and was issued a warrant for 60 acres of land as such. This
relationship was restated in another Botetourt County court case on 5 May 1791.

        Others?
Thomas (16) Carpenter is found in the Nash county, North Carolina censuses
of 1790 and 1800.  Reuben and Thomas Jr. are also found in both surveys.
William is in the 1800 census.  Burwell is found in the adjoining county of
Wake in 1790 and Nash county in 1800.
After Thomas's demise in 1803, these sons vascillate between
Pendleton and Edgefield Counties in South Carolina and those
counties surrounding Nash in North Carolina through 1840.
This writer (of the above book) has summaries of all of the Carpenters
living in the United States 1790 through 1840 by census and finds them very
helpful at times.

WFT is a big problem -- they just copy it and sell it, and they do put
on a warning to check out the data but it is most often ignored
completely.  The disclaimer keeps them from being legally liable, but
they know darn good and well what people are doing with the information
and don't care as long as there is a buck to be made from the
unsuspecting customer.
A genealogy faker put together a fake lineage from Thomas Carpenter of
Nash Co. NC back to Thomas "Jack" Carpenter and Joseph
(SEE HIS SON JOHN AND THE NOTES!)
Carpenter of Botetourt, that has been circulating for well over 20 years now.
All attempts to correct it have so far gone largely ignored because many of
the descendants don't want it challenged and have actively tried to
discredit anyone who tried to help them correct it.  But in the long
run, the truth will come out and the fakers will be discredited
themselves.  There are several others similar to that one that are also
circulating widely at present.  Just beware of the undocumented data out
there! Regards, Terry Lee Carpenter.

Page 41: 5. Benjamin (16) Carpenter was probably born in the late 1750's,
married Ruth Jeffers 12 September1790 in Botetourt County and was killed by
Indians in March of 1792 on the Elk River in then Nicholas County. He was a
chainbearer for the survey of Jeremiah (16)'s land on the Elk River in Randolph
County on March 11, 1792 and again on the "back creek" of the Holly River on
March 13, 1792. His murder occurred shortly after this. Ruth was also killed at
this time (she was expecting their first child).

E-MAIL: Tue, 18 Apr 2000 From: Nkobblk@aol.com
Sudna Hughes Carpenter did not die in an Indian attack on Mar. 1792 on the
Elk River.
Benjamin Carpenter and wife Ruth Jeffers Carpenter were killed in this
attack. Benjamin was a brother of Jeremiah Carpenter who married Elizabeth
Hamm, possible sister of Job Hughe's wife.
Proof is yet to be found that Solomon and Sudna Hughes Carpenter were parents
of Jeremiah and Benjamin Carpenter of the Elk River settlement!

Ruth Jeffers

She was pregnant with her first child when she was killed by indians.

Page 41: 6. Jesse (16) Carpenter was born about 1762, married Sarah Jane
"Jenny" Rife or Riffe on May 3, 1796 and moved to Gallia County, Ohio
immediately thereafter.
He served in the War of 1812 and received a pension (later revoked) for
service in the Revolutionary War under a Captain Trunk. Some researchers
believe (page 42) that Jesse was twice married and that Sarah Jane was his
second wife. Jenny Rite (Wright?) was supposedly his first wife. Jesse's
marriage is yet to be found on any original list by John Alderson, the widely
travelled itinerant minister who supposedly celebrated the rites of matrimony
(Other Carpenter marriages are). Old English script sometimes seems to defy
deciphering and transliterations are very common. Perhaps this is a "second
hand reading". "Jenny" is the usual nickname for Jane. People are
often found with first, middle or nickname in different censuses. Any
legitimate proof of either marriage, particularly a second one, would quickly
eliminate the controversy.

NOTE: Is Jesse short for Nathan?

Sarah Jane "Jenny" Riffe

numerous Henry Runnions. This would have had to have been a brother of Elijah

It indicates that this Joseph Carpenter was of German (Zimmerman)

1249. William Carpenter

William was killed in a battle near the Big Bend on the Jackson River by a
Indian force of some 50 Delaware and Mingo indians.  He was the commander of
the stockade at Fort Carpenter.  He moved there (now Alleghany County, VA)
about 1746.  His son Jeremiah was taken prisoner.

SEE: Historical Sketches of Alleghany County, VA, page 11, by Gay Arret.
"The indians met Carpenter near his home and killed him and made prisoners of
Jeremiah Carpenter, a son of the slain man, and two sons of Brown and one
woman.  The indians despoiled the house and taking some horses made a rapid
retreat."  Also "A Centennial History of Alleghany County VA" by Owen F.

3358. Benjamin Carpenter

SEE: Historical Sketches of Alleghany County, VA, page 11, by Gay Arret.
Benjamin with his brother Jeremiah moved to the Elk River where Centralia,
Braxton County, is now.  Jeremiah made a clearing in the virgin forest
and built his home with Benjamin's help, about one-fourth of a mile above
Dry Run.  Benjamin soon went back to VA, returning with a wife.
Benjamin or Ben, as he was known, built his cabin at the mouth of Holly River,
four miles below Jeremiah's home.
Many small bands of indians roamed through the wilderness, and soon their small
settlement was found.  One of the indians slipped into Benjamin's home and
killed his wife.  The indian then hid in the cabin, waiting in ambush.
Benjamin, his mother, and a niece were on the south side of the river, where
he was clearing a field and burning log heaps.  Not knowing what happened
at home, Benjamin went to the cabin to start a meal.  Another indian fired at
him from the hill and missed.  As Benjamin entered the cabin and turned to grab
his rifle mounted above the cabin door, he was shot under the arm and killed
by the indian that had scalped his wife.
