History
Mustered in: November 26, 1861 Mustered out: August 23, 1865
The following is taken from The Union army: a history of military affairs in the loyal states, 1861-65 -- records of the regiments in the Union army -- cyclopedia of battles -- memoirs of commanders and soldiers. Madison, WI: Federal Pub. Co., 1908. volume II. Seventy-fifth Infantry.—Cols., John A. Dodge, Robert B. Mer-ritt, Robert P. York; Lieut.-Cols., Robert P. York, William M. Hosmer, Robert B. Merritt, Willoughby Babcock; Majs. Willoughby Babcock, Lewis E. Carpenter, Benjamin F. Thurber, William M. Hosmer, Charles H. Cox. The 75th, known as the Auburn regiment, was composed mainly of members from Cayuga and Seneca counties, and was mustered into the service of the United States at Auburn, for a three years' term, Nov. 26, 1861. It embarked for the south on Dec. 6; was stationed at Santa Rosa island and Fort Pickens, Fla., during its first winter in the service, and formed part of the garrison of Pensacola during the summer of 1862. While here Co. K joined the regiment, which was ordered to New Orleans in September. It was assigned to Weitzel's reserve brigade, which had a brisk fight at Georgia landing. Upon the organization of the 19th corps in Jan., 1863, the regiment became a part of the 2nd brigade, 1st division and moved to Bayou Teche, La. It lost 17 in an engagement at Fort Bisland in April, and in the assaults on Port Hudson, May 27 and June 14 it lost 107 in killed, wounded and miss-.ing, the 1st division bearing the brunt of the fight. After the surrender of Port Hudson, July 9, the troops performed garrison duty. From August to September, the regiment served with the reserve brigade of the 1st division; in September it was assigned to the 3d brigade of the same division; in October it was mounted and attached to the 3d cavalry brigade, and during the winter a sufficiently large number of the men reenlisted to secure the continuance of the 75th as a veteran regiment. While the reenlisted men were on furlough, the remainder of the regiment served with the 14th N. Y. cavalry and rejoined the regiment June 28, 1864. At Sabine Pass, the regiment lost 85 killed, wounded or missing and during Nov., 1863, it was stationed near New Iberia and Camp Lewis, La. In March, 1864, the command entered upon the Red River campaign and in July it was ordered to New Orleans. After the regiment was reunited, in June, 1864, it served until the middle of July with the 1st brigade, 2nd division, 19th corps, and then embarked for Virginia, where it became a part of the Army of the James and joined in the pursuit of Gen. Early in the Shenandoah Valley. It was engaged at Halltown, the Opequan, where the loss was 73 killed, wounded and missing, at Fisher's hill and Cedar creek, where it also suffered severely. The original members not reenlisted were mustered out at Auburn, N. Y., Dec. 6, 1864, and the veterans and recruits consolidated into a battalion of five companies, which was ordered early in Jan., 1865, to Savannah, Ga., and assigned to the 1st brigade, 1st division, 10th corps. The regiment served at Savannah until August, and in April, received the veterans and recruits of the 31st independent company N. Y. infantry. It was mustered out at Savannah, Aug. 3, 1865, having lost 106 by death from wounds, and 109 from other causes.

Hi,
I'm descended from (above) who was supposedly US Consul to Foo Chow (China?)
during Lincoln's
administration. His daughter Mary S. Carpenter Worden would be my
great-great grandma. Anyhow do
you recall this guy or his geneology ( I think his parent's were Erastus and
Mary). I'd be happy to buy the
disk- just curios  if any of this rings a bell?

William H. Carpenter (1821–1885), was U.S. Consul to Foochow (now Fuzhou), China, during the American Civil War years. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln in March, 1861,[1] and recalled by President Andrew Johnson in December, 1865.[2]

Prior to his appointment to the consulship, Carpenter was proprietor of a livery stable in his hometown of Auburn, Cayuga County, New York and was active in local civic matters, serving as postmaster of Fleming village in the early 1850s,[3] state commissioner for development of the salt springs at Montezuma, New York from 1858,[3] on the first board of directors for the city water works company from 1859,[4] and as a founding member of the Cayuga County Historical Society in 1877.[5]

Carpenter also was active in state politics, identifying with the Republican Party in its formative years, and supporting New York Governor William H. Seward, 12th Governor of New York, United States Senator and United States Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, who became a lifelong friend.[6] After his service in China, Carpenter retired to Auburn, where he lived until his death at the age of 64, on Sunday, October 25, 1885.[6]

Personal
Carpenter was a son of Erastus and Mary (née Taylor) Carpenter, born in 1821 at Auburn, New York, where his father was an early merchant.[7][8] He married Sevira Wethey in 1848, with whom he had two children before her untimely death in 1864.[9]

NAME William /Carpenter/ SOUR DATA TEXT Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah 1949.
Jerome W. Carpenter is WIlliam's and Adaline's first know child, born on 8/12/1841.  Adaline died on 9/15/1841.  It is reasonable to assume she may have died of complications with Jerome's birth.  Its also evident that William being still a young man, probably remarried.  Since his child Jerome stayed at the Wakefields in Thompson, it is assumed William didn't go too far away.

Speculation: Jerome W. Carpenter is Williams and Adalines first known child, born on 8/12/1841. Adaline died on 9/15/1841. I think it is reasonable to assume she may have died of complications with Jerome's birth. I'ts also evident that William being still a young man, probably remaried. Since his child Jerome stayed at the Wakefields in Thompson I am also assuming William didn't go very far away.
1850 census:
The 1850 census page 137 lists the Wakefield household as follows:
Ezra Wakefield age 56 of Webster Mass. property of 700 pounds.
Polly Wakefield age 54 of Thompson Conn.
George Wakefield age 25 of Thompson Conn.
Jerome Carpenter age 8 of Thompson Conn.
1860 census
The 1860 census page 698 lists the Wakefield household as follows:
Ezra Wakefield age 62 of Conn. laborer
Polly Wakefield age 64
Ann Carpenter age 21 of Conn.
Fred Carpenter age 2 of Conn.
THE WILLIAM CARPENTER STORY
William Carpenter of Thompson Connecticut was born on July 23, 1817 in Woodstock Connecticut. Adeline Wakefield was born in December of 1819 in North Grosvenorsdale. The two of them married about 1840. Records of their marriage have not been found because the Putnam area at this time did not require marriages to be recorded, however their one and only child, Jerome William Carpenter, born August 12, 1841, was found in the 1850 census, living on his grand parents farm. It seems that Adeline died on September 15, 1841 about a month after her sons birth. It also is evident that a family named Cortis was good friends with the Wakefields as Adeline is mentioned in the Cortis will. Adeline also is buried in the Cortis family cemetery with her parents. Williams burial, as is his whereabouts, is currently unknown.
