MILITARY: He enlisted, August, 1861, in the 4th Vermont regiment.

Nathan Bates Carpenter born March 30, 1836 in Shaftsbury Vermont, Son of Hiram Carpenter and Dianna Potter, was married to Nancy Ann Potter May 31 1857 in Shaftsbury Vermont by Hiram Bartow, Justice of the Peace, Nathan was 21 at time of Marriage and Nancy was 16.
Nathan enlisted as a private in Company A 4th Vermont Inf under Capt John E. Pratt and died 4 Dec 1861 in Vienna, Virginia at Camp Griffin of Typhiod Fever.
Pension Certificate # 5565 as of 11 Dec 1862 she was still Widowed.
on 5 sep 1863 Nancy received a Widows Pension of $8.00 per month retroactive back to the date of Nathan's death
in the letter dated 6 Jan 1863 Nancy states no surviving children.
In the 1850 Census, Shaftsbury, Bennington County, Vermont, Nathan is age 14, Living with his father Hiram and stepmother Elizabeth (nee Bates) (Fathers Second wife).
In the 1860 Census, Shaftsbury, Bennington County, Vermont, Nathan is age 23, living with his wife Nancy and 6 month son Rollin next door to his stepmother Elizabeth and in the house of Seymour Blackmore
In the 1870 census Shaftsbury, Bennigton County, Vermont there is no listing for Nancy or Nathans Step mother. the 1870 does list his halfbrother Solomon as head of house with wife Grace and child minnie, Living with him is his brother John
