Both of them died in an automobile accident.Vernal ran away at age 15 to fight with Pancho Villa in Mexico and returned
home with a car (first to be owned by the family) and a story.
He had been shot through his cheek and the bullet exited behind his ear. He
was then left for dead until someone heard breathing in the Morgue and saw "the
steam of breath" rising in the cold room.
