Eugene E. Carpenter, who is engaged as contractor and builder of Port
Washington,L.I. ,N.Y., was born at Searingtown, a town of North Hempstead,
L.I.,NY. His father, James Smith Carpenter, was also a builder, moved to
Manhasset when Eugene was a lad of some 12 years and there the latter lived
until his marriage. When sixteen years of age our subject began work with his
father, under whose able instruction he learned his trade. He was married in
1872 to Miss Sarah Jane Fearon. Her parents were still living, making their
home in Brooklyn, in which city Mrs. Carpenter was educated. While still an
apprentice, Eugene E. assisted his father in building the house which he moved
into soon after his marriage. It was while at work on this dwelling that he
became acquainted with his future wife. Their union has been blessed by the
birth of three children, Eugene, Jr; William and Elsie.. The elder son is
also following the carpenter's trade, which he learned with his father.
William is assisting his father in his business. In politics our subject is
a strong supported of Republican principles and doctrines and in 1872 cast
his first Presidential ballot for Grant. He was elected trustee of the Jones
poor fund, but refused to serve in this capacity. He is a charter member of
Protection Engine Co. #1, of which he is foreman. Socially, he is an active
worker in Worth Lodge # 210, F. & A.M. which meets in the German Masonic
Temple in New York City.

BIRTH: Henry was born before his parents were married. He may have been from
the first marriage, even though the Carpenter Family in America Book by Daniel
H. Carpenter, 1901 indicates there was only one child from the first marriage.
Of course the book does not list the descendants of his second marriage.
Henry could have been adopted by John W. Carpenter after marrying his
second wife? More questions ...

REF:Death certificate states that Emma was attended by a doctor from Sept. 10
1943 to June 3, 1944. She had broken a hip (Sept. 10th), and subquently
had "myocarditis" (cause of death), on June 2, 1944, at approx. 12:45 PM.
The death certificate also states she was born in Syracuse, N.Y. and was
living at 6401 Canton Center Road, Canton twp at the time of death.
(There is a discrepency in her birth date, Art Carpenter lists it as 1861,
taken from her tombstone, Florence Proctor Stark lists it as 1862?)Emma was the mother of Pearl Florence Place, married Edwin Ona Place.
Emma was the daughter of Charles Egbert Carpenter Jr., related to
Aldens. Gramdmother Clarissa Whitmore was the daughter of Elias
and Adelia Brower Whitmore.Charles was the son of Charles E. Carpenter and Clarissa Whitmore
Carpenter. Refer to Emma Carpenter, his sister.
Thru the Whitmore side of the family they are related thru 9 generations back
to John Alden, a passenger on the Mayflower and an orginal settler of Plymouth,

REF: 1900 census:(T 623)Canton twp;Wayne co;MI-roll #754-ED #179;sheet
#5;page#26A;dwelling #106-family #109 census taken June 9th, 1900Edwin was the son of Lionel Lavington and Eunice Josephine Long
(Eunice was a full blooded indian.) They lived in or near Hartford
or Hampton Ct. around 1859. Later in life Edwin moved to MI and worked
as a logger in or near Fayette Mi., this was around 1880. According to Stanley
Proctor, who was the grandson of Edwin Ona Place, Edwin told him that he drove
the supply wagon for various logging camps. During the winter months wolves
would follow the wagon due to the smell of bacon and side pork. Edwin told
him, and demonstrated his skill, that he tied a small double-bited ax to a
rope, and could throw it at a wolf and hit him in the head, killing him.
The other wolves would then attack the injured/dead wolf and leave the horses
alone. He could then go on his way. According to Stanley when the White Pine
played out he became a builder and became involved in building subdivision type
homes in Petoskey. For whatever reason he sold out and went to
CA, that lasted only one year, he returned and purchased a small
farm near Dearborn, on Lillie Road in Greenfield township MI.Edwin had told Stanley that he met Emma Carpenter on the train when her family
was going on a vacation to Petoskey, he was working summers as a repair man.
Apparently they became infatuated with each other, he was living in Petoskey
and that was where her family was going on vacation. (During the late 1800 and
early 1900 Petoskey was a major summer resort, the old houses are still
there). So it would follow that he looked her up after meeting her on
the train and one thing led to another .During the time Edwin was working as a logger, 1880, iron ore
was being smeltered in Fayette Mi. His nephew Clarence Place also worked there.
According to Aunt Florence he came down to lower MI after the white pine
logging slowed down and worked for Christopher Carpenter.
(Apparently she forgot the year in CA).They remained in the area and he continued farming. This doesn't
exactly mesh with all the information, because according to some accounts Pearl
was old enough to go to CA. I am not sure we can ever figure it all out.!!The 1900 census (as shown above) lists Edwin Ona Place as being born in July
of 1856, which would have made him 44 yrs. old, however the census shows him as
being 43 years of age. I can just hear him say, "I'll be 44 in July" the
census taker then says, "well then you are 43 now". This is all a guess and
any discrepency is probaly due to the figuring of the months by the census
taker.
In checking census records for MI in 1900, there are many Places listed.
I also have found (maybe), another Edwin O. Place, which may account for the
descrepency in birth dates. I was sent (by error), a death certificate for a
Pearl Place, died May 6, 1969 in Manistee, MI. This is consistant with census
records of many Places in that area. Sometime, someone, should go to Manistee
and visit some Places and see if anyone has any geneology information. In 1990
J. Proctor found 25 Place names in the Manistee telephone book, wrote to each
one and did not receive any replies?

Henry S. Carpenter-49961 and Charles Egbert Carpenter Jr.-16912 are 6th cousins. Their common ancestors are William Carpenter-584 and Abigail Briant-659.
Lillians father was a large, well to-do farmer in the Ionia MI, area. It is
speculated that Charles Carpenter, 'Bert', may have worked for him, met Lillie
and subquently married her.Lillie died giving birth to twins, neither of the twins survived.
Grace was married twice, 1) Zimmerman, and 2) Tiggett. names of husbands
unknown and no known children. Need to pursue this via census records.

I heard you have a lot of information on the history of the Carpenter name.
I am researching my family history as well as the name itself. To start
with I have book called "The True Life Story of Frank F. Carpenter". In
this book his father and my great-great grandfather are mentioned, his name
was C.E. Carpenter(Charlie, Charles). His father is also mentioned as
Joesph from New York. If the book interests you it is on the web. I heard
you also might have CD rom available please let me know.
Sincere thanks,
Justin D. CarpenterPOSSIBLE
CENSUS: 1910 US Census - 2 Frank Carpenter found in Census - but they may be the same person. My guess is that he is a saleman. See image: RIN 171108 Frank Carpenter 1910A.jpg & RIN 171108 Frank Carpenter 1910B.jpg
