1895, Ella was a witness of her sister's, Ada's, marriage. There was an Ella Warner as a witness at her brother Willis' wedding in 1883, but it was not this Ella because this Ella would be only 5 years old. Ella Warner was probably a sister to the bride, Emma Warner.

Ella was Mrs. T. L. Fenker (article found in 1997) of Kalamazoo in May 1920 in her father's obituary. She was Ella Scott of Kalamazoo in May 1932 in half-brother's (Willis') obituary. Mrs. Scott was born July 6, 1879, in Wayland, Michigan, daughter of William and Mary Carpenter, and had been a resident of this community for 34 years. Surviving are: her husband, James Scott; one son, Edgar Fenker, Austin Lake; one brother, Roy Carpenter, Comstock; two granddaughters, Susan Fenker and Lou Ann Kemple, several nieces and nephews. Friends are being received at the Rupert-Durham FuneralHome, Vicksburg, until Monday morning. Graveside services will be held at the Portage Cem. at 11:15 Monday, Rev. Roy was of Kalamazoo in May 1920 in his father's obituary, and of Comstock in May 1923 in his half-brother's (Willis') obituary.
Roy was the Informant at his sister Bertha Mae's death in 1947 and listed his residence as Comstock, (Kalamazoo ), MI. Roy is listed of Comstock in his sister's, Ella's, obituary March 1958.

"Funeral services will be held Monday for Roy Carpenter, 90, a former Comstock School Board member, who died here Friday. Capenter, who lived at 91 Henning, retired as a KVP - Southland Paper supervisor in 1956. He served on the Comstock School Board for several years. Services are being handled by Truesdale Chapel of the Pines and will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the chapel, Friends may call between 7 and 9 tonight and 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Carpenter was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel, in 1958, and his second wife, Edna, in 1965. He was a member of the Kalamazoo Masonic Lodge and Civic League. Carpenter is survived by two sons, John of Silver Lake and Allen of Brighton; one daughter, Mrs. Joyce Shoup of Comstock; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Comstock United Methodist Church, the Kalamazoo Masonic Lodge, and was a member of the Comstock School Board for several years. He was Treasurer of the Park Board, a member of the Civic League and a member of the National Rose Society. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel, in 1958, and by his second wife, Edna, in 1965. He is survived by two sons, John Carpenter, of Silver Lake, Michigan, and Allen Carpenter of Brighton Michigan; and one daughter, Mrs. Joyce Shoup of Comstock; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. OBITUARY. Three Rivers Commercial, Three Rivers, MI, Monday 17 Feb 1947. Hattie Marie Norton. Hattie Marie Norton, 80, died at her home, 322 Fifth Avenue, Sunday after several months illness. She was born July 20, 1867 at Prairieville, Barry County, a daughter of Fernando and Helen (Cook) Carpenter. Her early life was spent in Barry county and in June 1888, she married John Norton at Plainwell. He preceded her in death July 19, 1930. In 1909 they moved to Three Rivers where she has since resided. She was a member of Bethany Chapel and Royal Neighbors. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Grace Price of Pueblo, Colo., four sons, Harold of Kalamazoo, Ernest, Fred and Dale of Three Rivers, two brothers, Frank of Cooper center, Henry of Kalamazoo, 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. A daughter Mable died in infancy and a son, Donald drowned in the St. Joseph River at the age of 13. Friends may call at the Austin funeral home until noon Wednesday when the body will be taken to Bethany Chapel for services at one o'clock. Rev. L. L. Case officiating. Burial in Plainwell Cem..

OBITUARY. Three Rivers Commercial, Three Rivers, MI, 21 July 1930, p. 6. John Norton Dead. Lived in Three Rivers and Vicinity for Past 21 Years. John S. Norton, for the past 21 years a resident of Three Rivers and vicinity, died at his home 322 Fifth avenue, at 10:30 Saturday night after an illness of seven months. He was born in Barry County, June 10, 1864, a son of Baxter and Mary (Stratton) Norton. He spent the early years of his life in Barry and Allegan counties. The greater part of the time in Plainwell. For a number of years he was employed on the railroad he also was engaged in farming for a few years. For the past 21 years he has been an employee of the Eddy Paper Corp. He was a member of the Knights of the Maccabees for a number of years. During his residence here he made a wide circle of friends by his kind and freindly disposition and splendid character. He was greatly devoted to his home and family. In 1888 he was married to Hattie Carpenter, who survives, besides one daughter, Mrs. Grace Sprung of Pueblo, Colo., four sons, Ernest and Harold of Three Rivers, and Fred and Dale, both in the U.S. Navy, nine grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Mattie Soles of Kalamazoo. Funeral services will be held from the Haring Chapel at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Andrew Telford officiating. Interment will be made in Plainwell.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. Three Rivers Commercial, Three Rivers, MI, Friday, June 10, 1921, p. 1 DONALD NORTON, 13, DROWNS IN ST. JOE RIVER. Boy Chums hear cries for help but unable to save Norton from going down into 8 ft. of Water. Had been in Water Only a Short Time When Accident Happened. Doctors work Over Body for Hours. Parents of Boy out of City - Notified of Drowning. This p.m. Donald Norton, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Norton of Riverside Drive was drowned in the St. Jose River about 1:50 this afternoon. The accident happened just south of the Barton residence on Flint Ave. Donald, in the company with Stuart Dougherty, Clarence Green and Dale Norton had been in the water a short time, when Donald, in attempt to follow the other boys in wading across the river, went down in about eight foot of water. His cries for help were heard by his boy friends who went to his assistance, but were unable to save him from a watery grave. Donald was unable to swim. According to the boys who were in the water with Norton, the body of the drowning boy came to the surface several times. Neighbors were summoned immediately and the alarm spread rapidly over the city. Marshall Cross and Claudia Collisi were the first to secure a boat and after searching for a few minutes the body was located in about eight feet of water where the boy had gone down. Collisi went down after the body and brought it to the surface, where it was placed in the boat and brought to shore. For more than an hour D. Seldmore, Dr. Kingsley, Mrs. Kingsley, Miss Ines Knapp, Harry King and others worked over the body but at four o'clock this afternoon there was no sign of live. The lungmotor was also used. According to the boys, who were swimming with the Norton boy, the body was in the water about fifteen minutes before brought to the shore. A sad part of the accident is the fact that the boy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Norton, are out of the city, having started this morning for a visit with friends in Barry County. This aftenoon all efforts were being made to notify the parents of the sad death of their son. They were finally located at Kalamazoo at four o'clock and returned to Three Rivers. Besides the parents, Donald is survived by four brothers, Dale, Ernest, Harold and Fred Norton.
OBITYUARY. Three Rivers Commercial, Saturday 11 June 21, p. 1 Norton Funeral Monday 10 a.m. Will be Held From Home of Parents on Riverside Drive. Although doctors and others worked over the body of Donald Norton for several hours Friday afternoon in an effort to bring the boy back to life, their efforts were fruitless and at 4:30 attending physicians pronounced the young boy dead. The remains were taken to the Baird funeral parlors where thy were prepared for burial, and later taken to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Norton on Riverside drive. Funeral services will be held from this late home Monday morning at 10 o'clock fast time, conducted by Rev. D. P. Bair. The remains will be taken to Plainwell for interment. Donald was born at Wasepi, April 16, 1908 and came with his parents to Three Rivers in 1909 where he has since resided. He attended the second ward school, was a member of the Lutheran Sunday school and troop two boy scouts. Besides his parents he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Vern Sprung of Mendon, four brothers, Harold of Leonidas, Ernest, Fred and Dale of Three Rivers. A grandmother, Mrs. Helen Carpenter, also survives. The boy scouts will attend the services in a body and any person who will volunteer his car to take the scouts to Plainwell where interment will be made, is asked to notify H. L. Baird as soon as possible. Six or eight cars will be needed.

A visit to the Cem. was made. Their lot is S-7 near the main gate and not far from the road. Tombstones: Fernando Carpenter, Nov 10, 1835 - June 26, 1897. Next to him is Helen Carpenter, his wife, 1846-1930. Then one stone with two names: Carpenter, Nellie 1883-1962, and Frank A. 1882-1954. Behind Fernando's is his mother, "Almira , wife of N. W. Carpenter b. 5 Sept 1810, d. 14 Apr 1888." Next to her is an empty lot and next to that is Joseph Henry, according to Twp. Records, but there is no stone. Next one over, behind Nellie and Frank A's is: Hugh D. Carpenter, Pvt. U.S. Army, WWII 1910-1986. This is Frank and Nellie's son. Nathaniel does not appear to be buried here with his wife. This would explain the empty space next to Almira.
There is a different, but related, Henry (1900 U. S. Census) b. Mar 1860, age 40, b. MI; Sarah, wife, Oct 1865, age 34, b. MI and Bertie, son Feb 1887, age 13, b. MI. And on the 1920, U.S.Census, Plainwell, Allegan, MI, Vol 2, Ed. 16, Sheet 4, Line 48. Carpenter, Henry, age 61, wife (not named, but Sarah C.), age 59, b. MI; Burton (adopted) son, age 32, b. MI. This Henry is William Riley Carpenter and Polly Cronkhite's son, a cousin to Joseph Henry, son of Fernando Carpenter. William Riley and Fernando were brothers and sons of Nathaniel Carpenter and Almira Lewis. These two Henrys are easy to confuse.
In 1900 census, she said she had had 1 child and 1 was still living.

It is said to be William Jennings Bryan Carpenter by name. This may be a coincidence, but the month and year were the same as the Harry C. we have in our records. Maybe they changed their idea about his name, or this might be a child of another Henry Carpenter.

I found Stanley Carpenter on the Social Security Death Index. He was born 22 Aug 1906. His Social Security card was issued in Ohio. He died in October 1974 in Tempe, Maricopa, Arizona.

Many guests including a number from away witnessed the marriage Wednesday evening of Miss Marie Whiting, daughter of Mrs. Anna Whiting, to Charles Carpenter of Plainwell at the residence of the bride's mother on Staple Avenue. At half past eight o'clock Miss Clara Smith rendered Mendelssohn's wedding march and the bridal party marched into the parlor where the ceremony was preformed by the Rev. J. B. Pickard. An artistic arch of white entwined with satin with a brackground of June lilies, ferns and palms formed a pretty arrangement for the party.. Miss Janie VanStream and Thomas Hindman were maid of honor and best man . . . She has been employed in the Kalamazoo Corset Company and is a member of Kalamazoo lodge No. 220 L. O. T. M. The groom is a carpenter and highly respected in his home town and in this city where he has resided for the past year. Kalamazoo Telegraph.

It could be Charles' brother's wife, but we know the names of his brother's wives, so it is not his brother's wife. Mary's mother was Mrs. Whitting, but she could have remarried. This leaves only two possibilities, Mary's sister, or Mary's brother's wife. Since we will assume Mrs. Whiting had not remarried, it would be Mary's sister. Possibly the one child missing of the family of 4 named by Mrs. Whiting.) This is the same family we found in 1910. Finding the newspaper articles proves this is our Charles.

MI (Hugh [1910-1986] is buried in same lot with Frank and Nellie, his parents, and grandparents, Fernando and Helen Carpenter, and great grandmother, Almira Carpenter, Hillside Cem., Plainwell, Allegan, MI); Fred (brother), age 34, b. MI, lst marriage of 12 yrs., and Elva (Elva L. Johnson of Athens, MI), 33, lst mg. 12 yrs also. (Fred and Elva, gave no information about their children. Perhaps there were none.) Helen 63, widow, b. NY had 7 children and 6 still living. The mother, Helen, and sons, Frank and his wife Mary (Nellie), Fred and his wife Elsa are all in this household. Their names were so poorly written on the census, and rewritten to the Soundex incorrectly, that this entry was almost missed! Example: Fred looked like Frul, and that was what was copied to the Soundex. Others were equally bad.
Frank was of Waterville, Canada in Apr 1919 in his brother's (Fred's) obituary.
1920. Could not find them on a census., some census were hard to read. See Helen's documentation for her 1920 data.
According to a relative, (Gerry Fair, Meadow Vista, CA in 1977) "Frank was a master carpenter. . .a picture of two houses he built practically single handed. . . . I spent many, many happy hours in their home."
In 1947 Frank was of Cooper Center when his sister's, Hattie Marie Carpenter Norton's, obituary.

He was born in Allegan county on May 23, 1863, where he had been a resident all his life. He was a member of the Otsego Fire Department for many years. He is survived by his granddaughter, Miss Verna Carpenter, of Chicago. Funeral services are to be held Friday afternoon, Oct. 8 at 2:00 o'clock from the Boyce Funeral Home here, with burial in Mt. OBITUARY. Otsego Union, Otsego, MI, Thursday, Mar 3, 1904. MRS. CLAUDE CARPENTER. Mary V. Smith was born at Dowagiac, Cass county, July 18, 1867, and moved with her parents to this place in 1883, where she has since resided. She was married to Claude Carpenter July 4, 1884, at the age of 17. She is survived by her husband and one child and a father, three sisters and three brothers and a large circle of friends to mourn her loss. She has been a great sufferer for the past four years with locomoter axia which has slowly taken her away. Mrs. Carpenter was a bright an cheery lady, always having a pleasant word for every one. Her sudden death is a shock to many as she had seemed apparently better until five weeks ago, when she was taken to her bed for the last time. She was a patient sufferer to the last. She died Feb. 29, at her home on West Kalamazoo St. The funeral was held from her home Wednesday at 2:30, Rev. Chas. L. Owens officiating. Interment was made to Mountain Home Cem.. Those present at the funeral from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Mayhart of Mishawaka, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Coney, Nellie, Lottie and Freddie Coney of Allegan. There were many floral offerings from friends. The Otsego Chair Company, Otsego Fire Department, G. A. Sherwood, P. M. Peabody, J. N Perkins, Mrs. Jas. Kennedy, the Coney children and others sending beautiful floral expressions of sympathy. For these and other kindnesses the family wish to express thanks.
Lucy's name was Lucy Russell at the time of her marriage to Claude D. Carpenter.

Witnesses: Ella Balden & Lizzie Fletcher, both of Plainwell. He had not been married before. This was the 3rd or 4th marriage for Hattie. (Hattie was marrying the brother of Havillah's wife, Allie M. Daniels. Havillah is Hattie's brother. In other words, brother and sister married brother and sister.)
Need to search the Soundex for 1900 now we know her married name is Daniels.
One of her descendants sent us the information about Harriett Bell Carpenter's daughter Arvilla Daniels, father Homer Daniels, and Arvilla's descendants.

It reads: "#239, Nov. 5, 1871 Carpenter, Havillah N., Male child, #7 of 7 children. b. Martin Twp.; father: Albert Dinia Carpenter, b. Steuben , NY; mother: Mary Elizabeth Myers b. Cahugh Falls, Ohio. Filed in County of Muskegon 5th day of Aug. 1940 by the probate judge." This was also recorded in Allegan records, because this was the county of his birth. (He was even listed as a female on census records.)
Another Birth record is Vol 8 Page 289 in Martin, Allegan, MI. Date 5 Nov 1871.

Long, Congl., Clergyman (Hattie was Havillah's sister. At this time Hattie was the wife of Elery Bagley, but Homer Daniels was who she married a year later in July 1893).

We have not found a death record for Allie Daniels Carpenter in Allegan, Kalamazoo or Barry, but she probably died about 1900, or there may have been a divorce. (Havillah remarried in 1900. See 1910 Census. His second wife was named Florence and they said they had been md. 9 yrs. They also have a son, Albert D., age 7.)

Havillah is an insurance agent.

NY was a prisoner. There was some numbers, not sure what they meant. 15-5-9-7or 8. He was #7901 on the page. The warden or guard was Louis Carl Ruthmiller.
1920 U. S. Census we found two possibilities. I believe it is the first one because he gives his birth place as Penn. However, even though the census were taken days apart, it is possible they are the same family even though there are a few descrepancies. Both of these census could be looked at again to see if it gave an occupation for Addie. We know she was a dressmaker in 1910.
Which one is it in 1920? Or are they both the same family, taken twice? Further research is needed.

It is similar to what ShirleyFlescher sent."Born in Orangeville, Barry County, Michigan on the 19 of June 1876, son of Benjamin Frank Carpenter and Mary Jane (Wall) Carpenter, died May 31, 1942 was laid to rest in Evergreen Cem. in Everett Washington. (Leland better known as Lee Frank) Married Carrie Edith Miller on about 1902 in Michigan. They had five children, two girls, Murrial Mairel, the oldest one and Angess, the youngest one. And three boys Lenord, the oldest and twin boys Willard Wilary and William William, Carrie Edith, died on April 14, 1919, was laid to rest in Moddeville Cem.. "
"After lst wife Carrie died, Leland and children moved to Dick, Mich. There he married 2nd wife Beatrice Rozella Miller (stepdaughter) on Jan 31, 1922 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Beatrice Rosella was born Aug. 4, 1905 in Michigan. (Do not know the town). Lee and Beatrice had eleven children. Harold Lloyd, born Mar 21, 1923, at 11 p.m. in a farm house five miles from Trout Lake, Michigan. The county is Chippewa. Harold was killed in World War 2. He was taken prisoner on May 7, 1942, and reported missing May 23, 1944, and declared dead April 22, 1945. After Harold was born (1923) the family moved to Kenneth, (Mackinac) Michigan and Lee bootleged whiskey and beer before this he worked in a logging camp.
" Edna May was born Feb. 22, 1925, in Kenneth, Michigan at 3. a..m. Mackinac county, Moran Twp.. Mildred Elenor born May 23, 1926 in Kenneth, Michigan at 2:30 a.m. Mackinac county, Moran Twp.. The Twp. is the county seat. On July 29, 1928, Lenard died from spinal meningitis, and was laid to rest in Trout Lake, Michigan. Earl Lee Carpenter was born at the Village of Kenneth, Mackinas County, Moran Twp., Michigan at 4 a.m. in 1928. Earl Lee Carpenter was killed in a car accident on Oct. 12, 1954and laid to rest in Newport, Oregon on Oct 15, 1954.
" Lee Carpenter delivered Harold and the state paid him 50 cents for it. He also delivered Edna, Mildred and Earl but did not get paid for it.
" After Earl was born the family left Michigan in a baby grand Chevrolet for the West. The family got to Cheyene, Wyoming and had to stay as it was snowing too bad to go on. This is still in 1929. They rented a house and Lee began bootleging whiskey. He made one batch and sold it. Lee's oldest daughter Murriel met them in Cheyenne, Wyoming. (She went back to Michigan).
" The family left Wyoming for the West, camping along the road working to make money for the trip. The family work in the field and at one place got $8.00 dollar and acre for thinning sugar beets. They went on to Idaho, stopped and camp in the woods by Headquarts, (Clearwater ), Idaho. Lee went to work for Weyerhaeuser building road. After that he went back to bootleging whiskey and was picked up and put in jail. The family rented a house in Ahsahka, (Lewis County), Idaho, until Lee was out of jail. Beatrice Zella (better know as Betty) was born Jan. 31, 1930 in Ahsahka, Idaho.
" After that Lee went to work as a cook in Superior, Montana and the family stayed at Ahashka, Idaho. He made one hundred dollars a month. When he returned, he found the family had been burn out and was living nearby. He was again picked up for bootleging, and the family was sent to Getchell, Washington, the Uncle Bert place. (Carrie half brother). This was in 1931. Lee arrived in Washington later. From there the family moved to Everett, Snohomish , WA. Gordon was born Aug 28, 1932 in Monroe, Washington. He died June 12, 1961 in a car accident in Ellensburg, Washington. He was laid to rest in Newport, Oregon. Raymond Roland was born Sept. 25, 1933 in Everett, Washington. Floyd Roy was born Jan. 28, . 1935 in Everett, Washington, Vernon Everett was born Aug. 7, . 1936 in Everett, Washington, Shirley Ann was born May 31, 1939 in Everett, Washington, James Frank was born 14 of May 1942 in Everett, Washington." Some records say Lee was born in Osceola County, and that he married Carrie Edith Miller about 1902.
Letter dated September 26, 1980 written to Mr. Zale Carpenter of Falmouth, Michigan, fro Shirley Ann (Carpenter) Flescher: "I'm writing you in hope you may be some of my family. The parents left Michigan in 1928. My father was Lee Frank Carpenter. I was three years old when he passed away. I didn't know much about his family. I'm working on a family tree in hopes I can find some of the family. My family had some brothers and sisters, and i have a picture and on it is the name of Zael and Glen and Aaron and Ben and Agness and Lulu. If you know any of them, will you please let me know. And if you are part of the family, will you please send me some information on your family. I hope to hear from you soon."
Carrie was married before because it was her daughter named Beatrice Rozella Miller that married Carrie's husband when Carrie died. It said he, Leland, married his step-daughter.
