... Attached is a photo of John T. and Vinnie in Montana in 1930, taken by Nellie (Tyer) Carpenter. My mother's side of the family comes from a long line of Mormons, so plenty of info there with huge family books. Carpenter line has always been sketchy. Thank you for everything you sent and the links. Lots to review and ponder.

SUBJ: Military chronology for Pierre Risso Carpenter

Below is a chronology of salient points in the military career of my father, Pierre Risso Carpenter (DOB: 3 Nov 1921).  I have bracketed some mysteries.  Many thanks in advance to all who can shed some light.  Any information, records, references, hints, or even questions would be appreciated.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Father: Walter Wright Carpenter
Mother: Helene Antoinette Lucrese Risso, originally of Nice, France

3Nov1921 born in Richmond, VA.

The family moved often.  3 siblings, all younger, were born in Los Angeles and Jackson, MS.  Eventually the family settled in Houston.

1930 - after abandonment by father Walter, mother Helene returned to Nice via Guadalajara and Le Havre with her 4 children.

1932 - A reference from Time Magazine of 19Sep:
"In Nice, France, Mrs. Helen Risso Carpenter, 35, U. S. citizen, tried to drug herself to death when her money gave out. She lived with her four children at Ville- franche."
This episode evidently precipitated the family's returned to Houston via Le Havre and NYC.

01Aug1941 - PRC traveled to Canada and enlisted in the RCAF.  A reference summarizes his military service:
"CARPENTER, F/O Pierre Risso (J96008) - Mention in Despatches - Overseas - Award effective 10 January 1947 as per London Gazette of that date and AFRO 70/47 dated 7 February 1947. American in the RCAF; born 10 November 1921; home in Houston, Texas; enlisted Windsor, 1 August 1941. Trained at No.2 ITS (graduated 20 December 1941), No.19 EFTS (graduated 14 March 1942) and No.2 SFTS (graduated 3 July 1942 as a Sergeant Pilot). To Eastern Air Command, 17 July 1942; to No.128 Squadron, 18 July 1942; promoted Flight Sergeant, 7 January 1943; posted overseas 13 January 1943; promoted Warrant Officer, 2nd Class, 3 July 1943; commissioned 3 January 1945. Missing in action, 25 November 1943 during a "Rhubarb" to Bergen-op-Zoom with No.412 Squadron (Prisoner of War). Repatriated July 1945; released 18 September 1945"

[was J96008 his service number?]

20Dec1941 - graduated No. 2 ITS at Regina, Saskatchewan, having served with M Flight (All American Flight)

14 March 1942 - graduated No.19 EFTS at Virden, Manitoba
03Jul1942 - graduated No.2 SFTS at Ottawa, Ontario

13Jan1943 - posted to England.  No.412 Squadron was based at Biggin Hill, south of London

At some point in this 9-month period he conceived a boy by a local woman, probably born after he was shot down.  She sent a letter and a picture to mother Helene.  These artifacts do not survive.  Family legend has it that the woman was from Bournemouth, on the southernmost coast.

[My half-brother would be 63-64 now.  If I can find him, or his descendants, I will go to England and see their faces.  This is the central mystery.]

5 September 1943 - shot down in Spitfire AB 284:
"With No. 411 (F) Squadron, RCAF, coded "DB*L".  With No. 416 (F) Squadron, RCAF when it was shot down by flak during a Rhubarb near Goes-Thoeln on 5 September 1943.  F/S P.R. Carpenter POW."

[What is a Rhubarb?

Had he been posted away from Biggin Hill?   411 Squadron was based at Kenley, west of Biggin Hill.  Goes is in France along the Spanish border, which suggests rhubarb originated from southernmost England.]

Note the MIA and promotions are post-imprisonment.]

Family legend has it that he was imprisoned in Stalag Luft 3, and that he escaped several times.

27Jan1945 - forced march to Stalag VIIA at Moosburg, Germany

29Apr1945 - liberated by Patton's army.  Most POWs were eventually transported back via the "Combat Personnel Replacement Depots on the French Channel coast".

[Family legend mentions a picture of liberated POWs, including my father, in Life Magazine.  It would be interesting to find details of his repatriation processing.]

06Jun1945 - married to my mother in Houston [Note that he was not officially repatriated until July, but the speed of liberation, repatriation, and marriage must have been a jolt!]
