Incorporated: 1889 as Carpenter Steel Company, now known as Carpenter Technology
The man whose name the present company bears, James Henry Carpenter, served in the Navy during the Civil War, then embarked on a career as a construction engineer, developing an interest in metallurgy and the manufacture of tool steel. A New Yorker, Carpenter was encouraged to found a steel-making enterprise in Reading, Pennsylvania, by a visionary city councilman who, realizing that the region's bustling iron industry would naturally support such a venture, foresaw a boon to the city's economy. Incorporated in New Jersey on June 7, 1889, Carpenter Steel Company leased a rail-making plant in Reading and soon received its first order for 3,000 tons of steel. Within five months, the fledgling company had outgrown the rail-making plant and acquired a facility known as Union Foundry, which over 100 years later still functioned as company headquarters and a specialty steel mill.
Carpenter's branching into specialty steel operations began with a May 1890 contract with the U.S. Secretary of the Navy. Having found Carpenter's tool steels to be of superior quality, the Navy was betting, correctly as it turned out, that the company could develop armor-piercing projectiles. The fulfillment of the Navy contract was enabled by a patent granted to James Carpenter for an "air-hardening steel" manufacturing process. In November 1896, the Navy informed Congress that Carpenter's projectiles had tested successfully, calling them "the first made that would pierce improved armor plate." In the Spanish-American War of 1898, the routing of the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay was credited in part to Carpenter projectiles.
Unfortunately, the preeminence Carpenter achieved through its wartime armaments proved to be a curse when the Spanish-American War, and the contracts it fostered, ended. Complicating the decline in business was the death, in March 1898, of founder James Carpenter. By 1903, the company had fallen into receivership. However, the court-appointed receiver, Robert E. Jennings, was a former vice-president of a rival steel company and would soon oversee a dramatic resurgence at Carpenter. Elected president of a reorganized Carpenter Steel Company the following year, Jennings's expertise was in marketing; for the remainder of the decade he presided over innovations resulting in a variety of steel grades broad enough for almost every extant tooling application, including heavy-duty cutting tools, high-speed cutting tools, and hot heading.  ...

INDUSTRIALIST:

http://www.berkshistory.org/articles/guilded-age.html
A sampling of successful industrialists of the Gilded Age in Reading would include James H. Carpenter, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, who in 1889 founded Carpenter Steel when he took over the site of a defunct iron foundry to produce a limited specialty line of steel (today known as CarTech, it specializes in high tech steel applications as well as stainless steel products).
...
As well, James Carpenter, founder of Carpenter Steel, believed strongly in the safety and welfare of his employees. Photographs of the era depict employees receiving medical care at company sponsored health clinics, clean dormitory rooms provided to workers, employees engaged in spirited games of baseball on a Carpenter Steel-maintained field at lunch time, and happy workers participating in a local parade. Far from being entirely company propaganda, Carpenter Steel's approach to employee relations is supported by the fact that five drives to unionize workers over the years all resulted in a rejection of union affiliation in favor of remaining a non-union shop. The company's policy was to "stay one step ahead of the union benefits and offer Carpenter employees all the advantages of union membership without joining. "

Dear Robin, Carpenter Technology has its main phone number at (610) 208-2000. They have some 3,000 people working there and they have an extensive library on technology. The library also holds company history records. They have a web page at: Information contact is listed as: webmastr@cartech.com I am curious also! Let me know if you find out anything! John R. Carpenter La Mesa, CA Below is an overview of the company BUILDING ON THE PAST The company was founded on June 7, 1889, as the Carpenter Steel Company in Reading, Pa. James H. Carpenter, a construction engineer whose interest in steel production led him to the study of metallurgy, wanted to test the commercial value of improvements he conceived for the manufacture of steel. He and a small group of investors leased the old Philadelphia and Reading rail mill in Reading and, 11 weeks later, began melting the company’s first order for 3,000 tons of tool steel. One of his patented inventions an air-hardening steel was also used for knives, drills, and projectiles capable of piercing the armor on warships. In fact, Carpenter’s projectiles proved to be a decisive factor in the Spanish-American War, and established the company as a steel pioneer in both the United States and Europe. A Company Set Apart Over the next seven decades, the company found its niche in the area of specialty metals, and by the early 1980s was turning out more than 400 specialty grades of stainless, tool and alloy steels. As the Eighties arrived, so did changes in the U.S. economy. A severe recession lingered for years, and the U.S. steel industry was especially slow to rebound, due in part to increasing competition from foreign imports. Many steel companies faced financial losses for much of that decade. Some closed their doors, sold or downsized their steel operations and/or diversified into other areas. Carpenter, however, remained profitable and kept its sights on the future. The company remained committed then to an 8-year, $400 million capital expansion program. It also set new long-term goals, acquiring companies that were extensions of its core business - specialty metals - and selling those that no longer fit the company’s goals. Carpenter also upgraded its product mix, increasing sales to such high-end markets as the aerospace and chemical industries. By the early Nineties, the company was well positioned to take advantage of a revitalized economy in a global marketplace. As the global marketplace grew, so did competition. Customers demanded not only more sophisticated alloys and higher quality levels, but wanted them in record time. To meet these demands, Carpenter adopted a Continuous Improvement philosophy to improve processes and services; continued to modernize its manufacturing and plant operations; built facilities to house new operations; and acquired new companies that allowed the company to grow faster than a U.S. steel company would otherwise. Mr. Carpenter, thank you writing about Carpenter Technology’s namesake, James Carpenter. We’re pleased to hear from people with a connection to Carpenter.

Attached is the official company bio about James Carpenter. I located an old, faded microfiche print of James’s obituary published in the Reading Eagle newspaper on Monday, March 7, 1898.

He died of complications from pneumonia at his residence at 606 N. Fifth St., Reading, Pa. (in downtown Reading). The home was referred to as Swananoa or possibly Swanona depending on the source. His widow was the former Georgienne Smith of Indianapolis, IN. The obit states that his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters survived him and resided in Brooklyn, NY.
