THE GEORGE ERNEST CARPENTER STORY
According to Putnam Connecticut town hall records, George Ernest was born on January 13, 1866 in Putnam Connecticut to Jerome W. Carpenter, age 25, and Mary Donkersley, age 25. It wasn't till 5 years later that George's brother Warren was born on  January 18, 1871, and two years after that his brother Newton arrived on July 15, 1873. A little over a year later, on September 15, 1874, Georges mother Mary Donkersley, dies at the age of 33.

Two months later, in November, George has a new mother, Frances Melissa Briggs, age 32. Sometime between 1874 and 1882 Jerome W. moved his family to Webster Mass. George now 16, has a new sister named Adaline only to see her die at 3 months old. Another brother Myron V. is born on March 11, 1884. Three years later in 1887 we find George Ernest, age 21, living in Woonsocket with his parents at 4 Center St. He is employed as an operative, which is some kind of a mill worker. On July 11, 1888, George's new sister, Edna Maria, arrives. The family moves once again, this time to 110 S. Main St. George doesn't stay much longer, apparently moving out on in his own at about this time. In 1891 we find he has deffinetly left his fathers place in Woonsocket and probably gone to Dudley Massachusetts where he met his wife to be MaryAnn Murray. When he moves to Dudley  he has a job as a Woolen Spinner, which he most likely had till he was retired since it is listed on his death certificate.

On June 30, 1896 George Ernest Carpenter, age 30 and MaryAnn Murray age 24, were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church in N. Grosvenordale Conn. by Thomas Coersey. Church records list George as living in Dudley Mass. and MaryAnn as from Quinnebaugh Connecticut.

George and MaryAnn had 2 children, Mary Edna Carpenter born on February 23, 1902 in Gilbertsville, Mass. and John William Carpenter born on October 11, 1907 in Dudley Massachusetts. Ten years after John's birth, on July 9, 1917, Georges wife, MaryAnn murray age 43 years 6 months, dies of chronic convulsions, probably  epileptic in origin. On April 3, 1923 Georges daughter, Mary Edna marries Jack Ring and shortly therafter presents George with two little granddaughters. Mary Loretta Ring and Alice E. Ring. George lived long enough to see his only daughter Mary Edna die at the age of 23 on August 28, 1924, of acute rheumatic fever.

Not much is known of George's personal life but we do know he visited his brothers on occasion. His niece Florence remembers him visiting her house in Wauregan a number of times. One incident that is remembered...

"He was tall, not to fat, and sort of a good dresser for the times. Uncle George would  walk  to  Wauregan  all the way from Massachusetts. George and Dad would  go  in the  dinning room,  close the door  and you could hear them talking but I was not able to make it out. I was to young to I guess. Later, Dad would  come out and  ask mom to make  him  and  Uncle George some thing to  eat.  Mom  would  hand dad a plate and a cup of tea plus a bag of something for Uncle George to eat while on  the  road. He said  he  was going  to  Woonsocket.  We  kids could  not understand why he would  walk when  there was a  bus  he could  ride.  Uncle George said he  had  to see Warren.  Uncle George never said very much to us kids."

George Ernest Carpenter, lived till he was 70. He died on May 9, 1936, in Dudley Mass. of Arterial Schlerosis, Chronic Paranechymaton, and Nephritic Cerebral Hemorage. George, his wife MaryAnn, and his daughter Mary Edna are buried in the same plot of ground in Calvary Cemetery in Dudley. The plot is marked by a 4 foot tall marble spire and is situated alongside the main entrance road, facing the waterfall on the river, just off of Cemetery road, which is off Rt. 12.

    DEPOSITION OF
    GEORGE EARNEST CARPENTER
    April 7, 1910
Given to prove Francis was married to his father so she might receive his army pension.

"I am 44 years old and was born at Putnam, Conn. I am a spinner employed at the Intervale Co. at Quinebaug, Mass. which is my post office address. I am the oldest child of my father, the late Jerome W. Carpenter, who served in Co. A, 6th Conn. Infantry in the civil war and who died at Woonsocket, R.I. a year ago last Feb. I used to be a member of the Sons of Veterans. My mothers maiden name was Mary Donkersley, and was born and brought up at Putnam. My understanding is that my father married her there and lived there with her till she died.

She died at Putnam 33 years ago last September. I was then about 8 years old. There were three children living when she died, viz: myself, Warren A. and Newton Leroy, now dead.

After my mother died my father married Frances Melissa Briggs, his present widow. I was not present at the marriage, and do not know the day and date, but I remember the fact. I was not yet nine years old then.

I was born Jan. 13, 1866 and I had passed my eight birthday. They were married the same year, but I do not remember the month or season of the year. It was but a short time after my mothers death.

I do not know anything more than that it was generally understood that they were married, and I know that he brought her home as his wife and she took the place of our mother and she continued to live with him as his wife and us three children lived with them and she took care of us same as a mother. I lived with them till I was 21 years old. I lived with them at Putnam, Webster, and Woonsocket, They were regarded everywhere they lived as husband and wife and they had three children, the first was Adeline Francis, born at Webster, Mass. and Myron V. Also born at Webster, and Edna Maria, born at Woonsocket, R.I. Their first child, Adeline, died at Webster at the age of about three months.

When my father married Frances she was then living at North Grosvenordale, Conn. with Ezra Wakefield, now dead and left no family. Ezra Wakefield was my father's grand father, and this claimant was keeping house for him and had lived in his family for many years, as I was always informed and understood. My understanding was that she was an orphan and had been adopted by some one of the Wakefield family.

My understanding was that they were married by a minister of the name of Elder Boss. I remember a preacher of that name in Putnam, but do not remember any of the name of Hobbs. I can't tell you whether or not Mr. Boss is living.

While in Webster my father was a teamster and worked for the Slater Woolen Co. and many others. In Putnam he worked for Chapman & Vatty for a number of years.

The deposition is signed by George Earnest Carpenter in his own hand.

31267. Myron Vernon Carpenter

NAME: Myron Vernon /Carpenter/ SOUR @S08840@ and SOUR @S08808@.
Myron born 3/11/1884 in Webster MA to Jerome Carpenter and Frances Briggs.
DEATH: SOUR @S09612@ and SOUR @S08843@ page 48.
Myron Carpenter buried on 5/28/1947 in Union Cemetery of Moosup, CT. Died of Lung Cancer.
The Dudley MA birth records list Myron Vernon Carpenter as being born on March 11, 1884 in Webster MA to Jerome W. Carpenter and Frances Mellissa Briggs.
When Myron V. was about 3 years old, his father Jerome, decided to move his family to Woonsocket RI. They lived at a boarding house on 4 Center St.
On July 11, 1888, Myron Vernon's sister Edna Maria Carpenter was born, and just one year later in 1899, when Myron is 5 years old, he looses his older brother Newton.
In 1900 Myron's father moves his family to 257 Pleasant St., Woonsocket, RI.
In 1902 at 124 Willow St. in Woonsocket RI, Myron is 18 years old and is working as a clerk, at his first real job.  In 1903 the family moves to 68 High St. in Woonsocket and in 1904 they move again, this time to 72 High St. in Woonsocket.
In 1904 at the age of 20 years, Myron joins the military.  He was very proud of the fact he belonged to the Woonsocket Home Guard.
Myron continued to live with, and move several times with his family, changing jobs in 1906 at age 22 to become a driver.  They then lived at 119 Arnold St.  In  1908 Myron's father made his last move to 116 Jenkes St. in Woonsocket.  When Myron's father died on February 10, 1909, Myron continued to live with his mother and brother Warren at 116 Jenkes St. and continued on with his job as a driver.  As a driver, Myron drove the
Water Wagon between Putnam and Woonsocket.  It's purpose was to keep the road in shape and the dust down to make traveling easier.  The following year, on August 5, 1910, Myron's mother died.
There was no longer any reason to stay in Woonsocket, so Myron age 26 and Warren age 40 left 116 Jenkes St.  It is believed that they went to Putnam CT where relatives were still living, most probably rooming together and getting on with their lives, working as laborers.
Sometime during that two year period Myron met Florence Mae (Cotton) Racine and at age 28, Myron was married to Florence, age 22 of Putnam, on September 26, 1912, in the baptist Church of Woodstock, by J.R.
Stubbert.  This is Myron's first and only marriage however Florence was previously married to Charles Racine of Woodstock, and brought to their marriage her 4 year old son Raymond Everette Racine.  There marriage had
been annulled by Florence's parents when Charles ran off.  Myron's brother Warren left Putnam after the marriage and returned to Woonsocket.
Myron and Flossie (as she was called) had their first child the following year.  Helen Mae Carpenter was born on November 5, 1913 in Dudley MA where Myron was living and working as a teamster.
Sometime before 1918 Myron moved his family to Killingly CT where on March 22, 1918 Vernon Archie was born.  The house was situated such that the town line ran between the kitchen and the bedroom.  Vernon was born
in the bed room and taken into the kitchen shortly after.  Because of this both Putnam and Danielson gave him a birth record.
Before 1920, Myron and Flossie moved again, this time to 371 Chestnut St.  in Wauregan CT.  Myron was working as a night watchman at Wauregan Mills when Elnora Mae was born on January 1, 1920.  Myron Leroy was born on July 18, 1921, and Hazel Irene was born on August 24, 1922.  Hazel Irene wasn't long for this world, she died 7 months later on April 21, 1923, of bronchial pneumonia and rickets.  Shortly after Hazle's death the family moved from their house in the old village to a seven room house in the new village, about a quarter of a mile up the road on South Chestnut St. Myron's 6th and last child Florence Lorraine was born there on November
16, 1923.
While at Wauregan Mills Myron worked as a carpenter, eventually loosing 3 fingers at the knuckles to a saw accident, then working in the cotton room.  His wife Florence also worked at the mill as a spooler.  One by
one as the children came of age, they left school and went to work at Wauregan Mills.  Myron Ve3rnon, in the late summer of 1941, moved to High St. in Moosup.  He moved because Wauregan Mill was not having any more
company gardens.  They got rid of the Horses and got a truck, and Myron and Flossie had always had a garden to grow food in.  At High St. Myron had everything he wanted.  He had apple trees and a big garden, and a lot
of land to do things with and Flossie had her flowers.  Myron put an addition on to the back of the garage and had chickens, a cow and 2 pigs that Milton and Helen had got for him.  (The pigs were named Hitler and
Mussolini).  Plus, Myron now worked the 2nd shift at Wauregan Mill.
In the winter of 1942, they moved to the house over the Railroad track on the Plainfield Rd. in Moosup, not far from the Union Cemetery, and even here Myron had his garden and some chickens.  The back year sloped
sharply down to the Moosup River.  There stay was short again, as in 1944 they moved to Central Village on Rt. 12, just pat the Red and White Market.
They had not lived there very long when Flossie became ill.  Florence Mae Cotton died on February 20, 1945 of Sugar Diabetes, in the little house in central Village CT, down at the end of main St. by the brook.
Florence is buried at the Union Cemetery of Moosup, CT, in the Carpenter plot.  Shortly thereafter, Myron with his daughter Elnora and grandson Alan moved again.  This time to the center of town into a big white house
behind the red brick post office.  Today the post office is a home and the white house in back of it is gone.  Myron is listed as being a millhand at the Wauregan Mill until the year before his death.  During his illness, Dick, Elnora and Barney took turns in caring for him at his home.  Myron Vernon Carpenter died on May 28, 1947, of lung cancer, in Central Village CT, in his home behind the red brick post office.  His casket was placed in the parlor of his home for a couple of days.  Myron Vernon is buried at the Union Cemetery of Moosup CT in the Carpenter plot.
Myron was a teamster when daughter Helen was born in 1913.
Died at his home on Main St. in Central Village of lung cancer of two years duration; had been a mill hand at the Quinnebaug Mill.  Attended by Dr. John Woodworth of Moosup.
MARRIAGE: Myron Vernon Carpenter age 28, a laborer residing in Putnam.  Born in Webster MA, married Florence M. (cotton) Racine, age 22.  Previous marriage annuled. He is the son of Jerome Carpenter and Frances Briggs. Married by Baptist Clergy J.R. Stubbert in the Woodstock Church, Woodstock, CT.

Vose St. in Woonsocket, and on September 7, 1916 Charles Edwin was born.
Happier times prevailed for a while, Ruth Adaline grew up and on May 25,
1921, at the age of 17, she married Leo Alden Roy in Woonsocket.  Then, 3
years later on may 2, 1924, Marion Eleanor Keach was born, and finally on
January 4, 1927, at the age of 39, Edna gave birth to Lillian Margery.
but like her brother William, Lillian only lived about 2 years, dying on
February 8, 1929 of Pneumonia.  Lillian is buried with her brother in
Union Cemetery in Smithfield.
Edna was short and had an excellent sense of humor.  Her big hobby was
jig saw puzzles.  She had a large room with many boxes of the puzzles and
car tables set up with puzzles in process.  She had an incredible mind
for putting pieces together.
Edna's husband Ferdinand A. Keach is listed at various times as a laborer
and wool sorter, much like his father was.  Ferdinand and Edna's life
seemed to be fairly settled.  They didn't move much and work seemed to be
steady.  Ferdinand and Edna lived on the 3rd floor at 71 Cross St. while
there daughter Ruth and her husband Leo Roy lived on the 2nd floor.  At
one point in time Edna received an organ from her church (believed to be
Baptist) and it was placed in the Roy's living room.  Ruth and her son
Raymond taught themselves to play it fairly well.
Edna's husband Ferdinand died on July 3, 1935 at Woonsocket Hospital of
Chronic Myocarditis and Chronic Nephritis.  His casket wouldn't fit
through the door to their third floor apartment so the family decided to
"wake" him in the living room of the Roy's home on the second floor.  His
grandson remembers "I didn't sleep much that night knowing my Grandfather
was in a casket in the front room!"  At his death Ferdinand's residence
was list as 71 Cross St., Woonsocket.  He is buried with his children in
Union Cemetery on North Smithfield RI.  Edna Maria carpenter died on July
28, 1977 at Woonsocket RI.  She is buried with her family in Union
Cemetery.  It is unfortunate that when she died, a family member came
into the house and threw out most of her things, including a priceless
family journal that went back for generations.  It is lost for eternity.

THE EDNA MARIA CARPENTER STORY
On July 11, 1888 Jerome W. and Francis M. had a daughter, Edna Maria Carpenter, while living at 4 Centre St. in Woonsocket. In 1889 Edna's father Jerome moved his family to 110 S. Main St. and between then and 1909 they moved a number of times.

My records show that the family was living at 13 Clark's Court in 1893 and after Edna's brother Newton died on April 19, 1899, Jerome moved his family again, in 1900, to 257 Pleasant St. Woonsocket. In 1902 they moved once more to 124 Willow St.. and then they move, in 1903 to 68 High St. Early in 1904 Jerome moves his family again to 72 High St. where on February 21, 1904 Edna, at the age of 15 1/2 gave birth to Ruth Adeline Carpenter. The birth is listed in Woonsocket as illegitimate. It has been confirmed by relatives that Ferdinand Augustus Keach is her father. Edna and her daughter stayed with her father Jerome as they moved in 1906 to 119 Arnold St. , and also for their move to 116 Jenkes St. Woonsocket in 1908. Finally in 1908 marrying Ferdinand and setting up her own place.

The first recognized child of Ferdinand A. Keach and Edna M. is William Edwin Keach born on May 17, 1911 at 58 Thomas St. in Woonsocket. However his life was brief, he died about 2 1/2 years later, on January 26, 1914, at the same address, of Pneumonia. He is buried at Union cemetery in Smithfield.

Before the death of William, Helen Medora Keach was born, on June 24, 1913 to Ferdinand and Edna. Shortly thereafter the family moved to 242 Vose St. in Woonsocket, and on September 7, 1916 Charles Edwin was born.

Ken Roy remembers visiting Edna Keach in her later years.

"I remember Edna as being short and having an excellent sense of humor. Her big hobby was jig saw puzzles.  She had a large room with many boxes of the puzzles and card tables set up with puzzles in process! Each time we went, she would give me one puzzle as a gift.  She had an incredible mind for putting pieces together."
