OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer, Saturday, Sept. 17, 1949, p. 1. Richard Bauer Killed in Crash.  Three Others Hurt in Accident on Gun Lake Road. Richard Dale Bauer, 23, of Route 5, Battle Creek, was killed last night and three other men injured when a speeding car went out of control on a curve and struck several trees on the Gun Lake Road.  Injured are James Shook, 28, of Route 2, Plainwell, critically injured; Arthur L. Roberts, 18, of Otsego, the driver of the car, seriously hurt; and Russell Whitney, 22, of Potterville, who suffered lesser injuries.  The four men, employees of the Industrial Maintenance  of Lansing were on their way home from work at Muskegon.  The car failed to make the Fox farm curve, 12 miles west of Hastings, skidded 60-feet before leaving the road, hit and uprooted an eight-inch maple tree, skidded 12 feet farther and careened off another tree and bounded 15 feet more before coming to a rest.  All the men were thrown free of the wreck.  The car, ownedby Mrs. Herman Sibberason of Otsego, the sister of Mr. Roberts, was demolished.  Mrs. Harvey Myers of Hastings, driving by discovered the wreck.  She notified Sheriff Leon Doster of Hastings, and three ambulances were dispatched to the scene.  The time of the accident was placed at about 9:35 p.m.  Mr. Bauer was born in Battle Creek on June 8, 1926, the son of Earl and Marguerite Bauer.  He attended Battle Creek High School up to the 10th grade and set pins at Michigan Recreation before enlisting in the Army in June, 1944.  For the last three years he was an employee of the Industrial Maintenance  of Lansing.  Besides his wife, Jeane, of Charlotte whom he married in Charlotte on Sept. 4, 1946, he is survived by a son, David Dale Bauer of Charlotte; his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bauer of Route 5, Battle Creek; his mother, Mrs. Marguerite Zackery of Berrien Springs; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bauer of East Leroy; a grandmother, Mrs. Florence Lucas of Union City; and three sisters, Virginia, Shirley and Joyce Bauer, all of Route 5, Battle Creek.  Funeral services will be held at the Royal Funeral home at 11 a.m. Monday, the Rev. Don L.   DeCoursey officiating.  He will be buried at the Burr Oak Cem., Athens.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Sunday, July 24, 1983, p 2B. Dowling - John F. Dowling, 47, of Clear Lake, died Friday in Kalamazoo's Bronson Hospital, where he had been a patient two weeks. He was born in Augusta and lived in the area all his life.  Dowling worked for 23 years for Globe Construction of Kalamazoo, where he was a paving machine operator, and was a member of Operators Engineers Local 324.  Surviving are his wife, the former Joan Douglas; a son, John D. Dowling of Delton; a stepdaughter, Mary E. Wills; brothers, George E. of Delton and Donald E. of Kalamzoo; and sisters, Mrs. Cleo (Guyetta) Prescott of Battle Creek, Mrs. Donald (Edna) Hite of Augusta, Mrs. William (Alice) Coleman of Galesburg, and Mrs. Lynn (Betty) Ferguson of Niles.  Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Schlueter Chapel, Farley-Estes Funeral Home, Augusta. Memorials may be made to the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Hastings.  Burial Augusta Cem..

WEDDING.  The Athens Times, Thursday, 2 July 1959.  Miss Joan Irons is Wed to Mr. Daryl Martin.  At a candlelight ceremony on Saturday afternoon, June 13, in the Sherwood Free Methodist Church, Miss Joan Irons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rodell Irons became the bride of Daryl Martin, son of Olen Martin and the late Bernita Mauer Martin. . .Mrs. Donald Swain was her sister's matron of honor and the bridesmaids were Mrs. George Irons, sister-in-law of the bride, and Miss Darlene Martin, sister of the groom. . .Mr. and Mrs. Martin are now residing at their home in Athens.  Both are graduates of Athens Agricultural Schools and both are employed in Battle Creek, Mrs. Martin at the Collection Service Bureau and Mr. Martin at Rich Manufacturing

Martin, 58, of Burr Oak died Friday, Jan. 22, 1993, in University Hospital, Ann Arbor, after a long illness.  Mr. Martin was born May 23, 1934, in Battle Creek to Olin and Bernita (Maurer) Martin.  He graduated from Athens High School and lived in Athens before moving to Burr Oak in 1966.  He had been employed by the J.W. Sturgis and Son as a driver-salesman and most recently by Miller Super Value, from which he retired in 1988.  He enjoyed sports and outdoor activities and had coached the Burr Oak Little League for five seasons.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Martin.  He married the former Jean Irons on June 13, 1959, in Sherwood.  She survives.  Also surviving are daughters, Beth Martin of Burr Oak; a son, Alan Martin of Colon; and a sister, Darlene Ling of Athens.  Services Tuesday, 26 Jan. 1993 from Rosenberg-Schipper Funeral Home, Sturgis.  Burial in Burr Oak Cem., Athens.

(Martin) Ling, 57, of Athens, died Tuesday, May 27, 1997, in Battle Creek Health System.  She was born Sept. 30, 1939 in Battle Creek to Olen R. and Berneita (Maurer) Martin. She was a 1957 graduate of Athens High School and had lived in Athens most of her life.  She was employed by Delta Airlines in Chicago from 1957 to 1960. Since 1963 she had been employed by Athens Public Schools, serving the past 32 years as secretary to the high school principal.  She married Robert D. Ling on Oct. 18, 1973, in Athens.  He died in 1991.  She is survived by a son, Ronald A. Parlin of Athens; daughters, Carol L. Parlin of Chicago, Anita M. Riegle and Susan L. Luplow of Battle Creek; stepdaughters, Deborah K. Ling of Fla., and Dawn M. Schaff of Oregon, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Daryl Martin.

Darlene Loraine Martin's husband, Michael A. Parlin is a descendant of Thomas Jefferson Carpenter, while Darlene Loraine Martin is a descendant of Abner Loomis Carpenter.  Abner Loomis was the younger brother of Thomas Jefferson, both were sons of Calvin Loomis Carpenter and Eleanor D. Pierce.  Therefore Darlene and Michael were previously related.

Loew, 61, of East Leroy died Thursday, Oct. 20, 1994, in Battle Creek Health System/Community Site after being stricken at home.  Mrs. Loew was born Aug. 22, 1933, in Kalamazoo County's Wakeshma Township, to Clarence and Gladys (Leedy) Lafler.  She graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1952 and lived in the area all her life.  On Dec. 5, 1957, she married William A. Loew Sr., at Pilgrim Holiness Church in Battle Creek.  He survives.  She was associated for several years with her husband's Loew's Appliance Store in Battle Creek.  She also had been employed at National Food Stores for six years and at Henkel's Food Market in Athens.  Mrs. Loew was active at North Athens Baptist Church, where she had served as food bank coordinator, choir member and helped put on church dinners for the sick and bereaved.  She enjoyed crocheting, camping and watching her grandchildren.  Also surviving are sons, Daniel R. and William A. Loew Jr. of East Leroy; a daughter, Sandra K. Miller of Athens; her mother, Gladys Lafler of Battle Creek; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Norman Lafler of Battle Creek. Services Monday at North Athens Baptist Church. Burial North Athens  Cem..
