Joseph W. Carpenter m. Prudence Vandercook 1845 Rensselaer Co. NY

Seeking information on Joseph W. Carpenter, who married Prudence Vandercook of Pittstown, Rensselaer County, NY, in 1845. Prudence was born in 1821, so Joseph probably was born about that time. In the census of 1850 they were residing in New York City, both age 28. Would like to identify his parents and learn what became of him. As of 1860, Prudence was residing with a new husband in Wisconsin. Thanks Ron Bachman

John,
Thank you very much for responding to my posting on the Carpenter genforum. I am confident you have identified the husband of my ggg-aunt Prudence Vandercook (b. April 21, 1821, Pittstown, Rensselaer County, NY, d. October 19, 1901, Chicago). She married Joseph W. Carpenter on April 24, 1845, probably in Pittstown, which is not far from Brunswick and Troy. I had suspected she married into one of the many Carpenter families that had been neighbors of the Vandercooks in Pittstown for decades. Apparently I was wrong. I, too, had found the 1850 census record, which showed Joseph's place of birth as MA and was skeptical about the record. But it apparently was correct. Thank you for identifying his parents. Could you tell me the source of that information? Do you have any idea how Prudence Vandercook made his acquaintance? Had he come to the Troy area?
By the census of 1860, Prudence had remarried and was residing in Madison, Wisconsin, near her brothers who had moved there from Pittstown a few years earlier. Her second husband was named George Ford Hastings, who had resided in Washington County, New York, in the township abutting Pittstown, Rensselaer County. My assumption is that Joseph had died, and Prudence came home to Rensselaer County, where she met and married George Hastings, a widower himself. I do not have the date of her marriage to Hastings, but I concluded it was before November 20, 1858, because on that date her brother named a son "George Hastings Vandercook," probably in honor of his new brother-in-law.
Prudence spent her last days with another brother in Chicago. Her remains were returned to Troy for burial, which struck me as a little strange. Could it be she was buried beside her first husband? I have no record showing that Prudence had children. The census of 1900 shows her as a widow, but the spaces for number of children borne and number of children still living were not filled in. That does not necessarily mean there were none, because other entries on the page show the numeral ZERO when there were no children. No children appear in Prudence's household in the 1860 or later census returns.
Can you provide any information on Joseph's family that might help me understand how he met Prudence? She was the youngest child of Michael S. Vandercook and his second wife, Sally Eddy, daughter of Gilbert and Prudence (Avery) Eddy. Could the Carpenters have been related to the Eddy or Avery families?
Thanks again.
Ron Bachman
