"John, you have been helping me with my illusive Carpenters - sending me
files, etc. There are four of we distant cousins (met on the NET) who
have been working on this. Well, Wes just returned from a trip and found
a book in the RI Genealogical Library at 121 Hope Street in Providence.
He found a book entitled "Descendants of William Carpenter of
Providence". It is actually a typed paper by Ruth and Mary Carpenter
(sisters) in 1975."  Penny.
The data submitted on this John's descendants fit nicely with the known data.
Penny, - Wes and the two others not named have done a good job.  JRC 7/20/99.

Subject: Sally Carpenter and Niles Fairbanks
Dear John:
Hello and Happy Thanksgiving.
I just found a connection to the Fairbanks line (a family who lived in my area of Gloversville/Johnstown). I'm hoping that you can help me find the parents and siblings of Sally Carpenter. She's got to be related to one of them from around here...maybe even my line. And believe it or not there are TWO Sally Carpenter's who married into the Fairbanks line. A connection to either would be great.
This is the information that I have so far:       (SEE SECOND DESCENDANT SHEET)

Descendants of Niles H. Fairbanks
Generation No. 1

1. NILES H.3 FAIRBANKS (REMINGTON2, WILLIAM1) was born 1811 in Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., NY. He married SALLY M. CARPENTER. She was born 1816. On her daughter's death certificate it stes that Sally was from the Township of Johnstown. On another daughter's death certificate it states Bleecker, NY (which is in the Township of Johnstown). I'll keep looking for a will that might mention her.

Children of NILES FAIRBANKS and SALLY CARPENTER are:

i. MINERVA4 FAIRBANKS, b. May 11, 1842; d. February 09, 1914.

ii. JOHN FAIRBANKS, b. 1844.

iii. JANE FAIRBANKS, b. May 05, 1846; d. March 20, 1925.

Notes for JONATHAN FAIRBANKS:

On his death certificate it lists his wife as Anne Worfhuf. I think this is probably a second wife. Have not found Sally's grave as yet.

E-MAIL: From: "John F. Chandler"  09/04/2001
Subject:   [CARPENTER] Carpenters of South Kingstown, RI
Over the long weekend, I had the opportunity to visit Rhode Island, nominally to spend time at the beach.  While there, I managed to squeeze in a trip to the Perryville Church Cemetery (historic cemetery #47 of South Kingstown), and I located the gravestones of Benjamin and Thankful Carpenter.  (It wasn't easy -- the stones are of marble and considerably weathered, and Benjamin's has fallen over and is half overgrown with wild thyme.)  I knew they were supposed to be there because they are listed in the RI Cemetery Database, but it's a far different thing to
see them directly, and, besides, I've heard two dissenting reports that gave different dates from those in the database.  At any rate, I can now confirm that the database is correct for these and some other Carpenter
stones that I saw there.  What I saw:
Benjamin Carpenter, died 1840 Sep 18, aged 76 his wife Thankful T. Carpenter, died 1826 Dec 27, aged 57.
[This Benjamin was probably the son of Thomas Carpenter who died in Exeter, RI, in 1815, and whose estate was administered by "Benjamin Carpenter of South Kingstown".  This Thomas in turn is rumored to be the same Thomas whose birth is entered in the West Greenwich vital records as 1738 Aug 3.]
Benjamin Carpenter, [who happens to be their son, but is buried in a  different area] died 1869 Jul 11, aged 62y 8m 25d his wife Sarah Carpenter, died 1875 Sep 15, aged 62y 9m 29d some offspring of this pair which I didn't write down (it was getting dark) all on one monument:
Thomas A. Carpenter, born 1836 Feb 14, died 1911 Aug 16
his wife Olympia I. Kerr, born 1842 Jul 19, died 1919 May 18
their son William B. Carpenter, born 1861 Jul 20, died 1932 Nov 29
Hezekiah Willard, 1862-1936
his wife Mary N. Carpenter, [evidently daughter of Thomas] 1864-1957
I hope this helps someone.
John Chandler

NOTE: The Carpenter Family in America Book of 1912, on pages 330 and 331 gives the descent of her son/grandson of number 1884a Benjamin Carpenter.
The ancestry of her husband Benjamin IS AT ODDS with submitted material and the 1912 Book.  Thus I am allowing two marriages seemingly to the same person to reflect the differences.  Where the commonality is the closest without conflict, I will merge data on this descendancy line.  JRC Feb 2001.
