8212607 4 BATCH AND SHEET NUMBER 0884810 LIBRARY CALL NUMBER.

BETSEY'S gravestone was in good condition in 1968.  In his research to
determine when and where OLIVER died, the compiler (Adm. CARPENTER) was
fortunate to come by genealogical data on the PIER family (see OLIVER'S notes)
through the courtesy of the late SIDNEY B. ELSTON of Corryy, PA., register of
vital statistics and treasurer of Pine Grove Cemetery, Corry, PA., in 1966.  He
consulted sextons of the following cemeteries, without success, in an endeavor
to locate the burial site of OLIVER: Pine Grove Cemetery, Corry, PA.; McGray
Cemetery, Concord Twp.; Beaverdam (PA) Cemetery, David Curtis Cemetery,
Columbus, PA.; West Lawn Cemetery in Columbus, and the Spring Lake (PA)
Cemetery.  A gentleman who tends Corry area graves on Memorial Day and devoted
years to locating forgotten gravesites said OLIVER was not interred in any of
the six PIER lots in Pine Grove.  Near the Pine Grove Entrance is a large
granite tablet placed in memory of Civil War Veterans and not necessarily
confined to those interred in the cemetery.  The tablet was dedicated to the
cemetery by a JASON C. SMITH, whose wife, MARTHA A. PIER, came from Blockville,
N.Y.  The other OLIVER PIER whose name is listed on this tablet was a son of
the OLIVER PIER who wed BETSEY CARPENTER.

Oliver Daniel Pier

BOOK- GENEOLOGY: Charles Lorain Carpenter, Rear Admiral, USN-Ret.,
THE DESCENDANTS OF TIMOTHY CARPENTER OF PITTSTOWN, RENSSELAER CO., NEW YORK.
Published 1976 - 200 copies By: The News-Journal - P.O. Box 398 Machias, Maine
04654.   A detailed history on the PIER family starts on page 20.

A history of Erie County, N.Y. records OLIVER PIER was one of the early
settlers of Concord Twp. and in his day, a famed hunter who claimed to have
killed 1,322 deer, plus numerous wolves, bear and other wild animals with a
single gun.  He became totally blind and lived with his son, WILLIAM, at Corry,
PA.  OLIVER was the son of LEVI and ANN (DEWEY) PIER of Busti, Chautauqua, N.Y.
OLIVER purchased land in Harmony Township's Twp.1, Range 13, Lot 2, in 1816 and
Lot 10 in 1831.  He was affectionately referred to as "THE LEATHER STOCKING OF
CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY" due to his feats as a hunter.  His father came to the Busti
area from Oxford (Pierstown) in Chenango County, then part of Otsego County,
NY.  Much effort was made to find OLIVER's grave in the 1960s.  See
spouse's notes.

!PIER FAMILY- The following Genealogical information regarding the PIER
family is recorded here so it may not be lost to posterity.  It is copied
verbatim from an article prepared by CALVIN A. PIER, son of an OLIVER PIER.
(From the T. C. Book page 20)  [I agree with Adm. Carpenter - JRC]

The PIERS of Chautautauqua County, N.Y. and nearby counties of PA
are descended from JOHN and LEVI PIER, two grandsons of Sergt. THOMAS and
MARGARET PIER who settled in Great Barrington, Berkshire County, MA about
1730.  From whare Sergt. PIER came from to Great Barrington, I have not been
able to ascertain.  But if correct he or his grandfather came from England.
Sergt. PIER lived in Great Barrington until his death in 1778 and had a family
of at least eight children as follows:
THOMAS JR., father of JOHN and LEVI, he married RACHEL TREMAINE and lived to be
about 90 yer's old.  JOHN died at the age of 14 years.
RHONDA married BENJAMIN TERMAINE (so spelled) of Edgemont.
DAVID served in the French and Indian War in 1755 & 1756.
RUTH married Mr. CHURCH probily JOHN CHURCH and was cut off in his father's
will with five shillings.
SOLOMON was born 1739 and was probily the soldier of that name from E.
Barrington engaged in the siege of Boston.
OLIVER designated in a deed of 1779 as of New Haven, Addison County, VT.
ETHAN who is designated in a deed of 1779 as of Tymouty, Bennington County,
VT.

Of Sergt. PIER's sons JOHN and probily DAVID & SOLOMON died before their
father without any descendants. All the PIERS Ive ever met trace their ancestry
to THOMAS of VT; as Sergt. PIER'S sons OLIVER & ETHAN went to VT, it
is likely the were the ancestors of the VT PIERS, quite a number of whose
descendants now live in MI & WI.
THOMAS PIER JR. was the oldest of Sergt. PIER'S children and was executor of
his will and had a larger part of his estate than any other one.
He lived in G. Barrington the greater part of his life, and there all his
children were born, six sons
JOHN born May 30, 1752,
LEVI was born June 3, 1754.            The other sons
DAVID
SOLOMON
ABNER                                  &
SILAS.
About 1790 THOMAS JR. and his six sons some of whom has family's moved to
Otsego Co., N.Y. and settled upon a track of land afterwards called after them
Pierstown.  THOMAS JR. & wife finally went to Chenango Co. and lived with their
granddaughter SALLY PIER ROOT and died there.  THOMAS JR. died in the year 1816
or 17 and his wife died the year previous.

JOHN & LEVI married sisters NANCY & ANN DEWEY.
JOHN had three children by his first wife,
RACHEL,
THOMAS                                 &
TRUEMAN;
THOMAS sons were JONATHAN & NORMAN and grandson Mr. DOHOBSON, had lived in
Chautauqua Co.
JOHN married his second wife PHEBE STEPHENS a woman with a remarkable memory.
Their children were
DANIEL,
HERMAN,
NANCY,
WILLIAM,
RUFUS                                  &
CALVIN.
DANIEL and CALVIN settled in Chautauqua Co. on the road from Fredonia to
Dunkirk where his daughter AMELIA now resides,
RUFUS at Jamestown where he married CATHERINE BLANCHARD & lived there till
he died in 1863.                       JOHN'S son
WILLIAM was in Chautauqua was in Co., but moved to Hyde Park, PA.
JOHN remained in Otsego Co. and died there while his son RUFUS was quite young.
Our Grandfather LEVI, brother to JOHN.
LEVI PIER born June 3, 1754; he moved from Pierstown to Chenango Co., N.Y.
lived there several years, but in 1814 settled with his son ABRAM and younger
children in Busti, Chautauqua Co., N.Y.; his wife ANN DEWEY PIER died about
1816 and he died in 1826; his second wife was widow PIERCE mother of his son
DAVID'S wife.  LEVI'S children were twelve in number.
ELIJAH married a BEEBE and died in 1804,
LOIS married a BEEBE and settled in Qumey, Ill.
NANCY married DANIEL ROOT in Otsego Co. and died in 1804.
SALLY married AARON ROOT.
SILAS died in 1804 with fever.
ABRAM settled in Busti and married OLIVE MARSHALL for his first wife, and MARY
ANN SIMMONS for his 2nd wife.
RHUBEN married MARGARET ARCHER and lived in Harmony, later moved near Meadville
& married again,
OLIVER married BETSEY CARPENTER & lived in Harmony.
LOWISA (so spelled) married HORACE BLANCHARD a brother of RUFUS PIER'S wife,
ROXEY married WILIAM MARTIN and lived in Busti, later Kinestone,
DAVID married ESTER PIERCE, lived in Busti, later Jamestown.
JOHN & LEVI were members of Captain GOODRICK'S company of 46 men who marched
from G. Barrington in August 1777 & several PIERS of G. Barrington were in
different companys that served in the Revolutionary War.

LEVI's brother ABNER had the notable experience of them all according to
CHARLES TAYLOR'S HISTORY OF G. BARRINGTON, and the account is corrobated by
others.  ABNER was at the Battle of Stone Arabia in the Mohawk Valley, Oct. 17,
1780, was taken prisoner by the indians one of his captors struck him on the
head with a tomahawk took off his scalp & as he lay helpless they shot him
inflicting several wounds; he was then left for dead, but recovering strength
to crawl to a nearby hayrick where he lay till morning when his comrads found
him, though terribly mutilated recovered & lived mant years some of his
descendents are still living in Otsego Co. His daughter Mrs. HARRIET KINNEY of
addison, N.Y. has visited Jamestown, N.Y.  His son GEORGE was famous as a
clarinet, fife & bugle player & served as musician in the War of 1812; he died
in 1831 in his 37th year.

The above in the spelling and words of CALVIN PIER, per ADM. CARPENTER.

KathySloan2002  (View posts)  Posted: 16 Dec 2004 2:40AM GMT

Classification: Will
Surnames: CARPENTER, GREEN
In the name of God, Amen.
I, Timothy Carpenter of the Town of Harmony, County of Chautauqua, and state of New York, being of sound mind and memory, and considering the uncertainty of this frail and transitory life, do therefore make, ordain, publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, that is to say:
First---after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged, I give and bequeath to my wife Sally B. Carpenter during her natural life, the use of the part of my house that I live in now as described(to wit) consisting of the upright and the room west of it used by me now for a kitchen with a bedroom west and a butry south of the kitchen. It is my will for my wife to have the use of my farm and all my personal property if it should require so much for her support. After her death if she should survive me, it is to be equally divided between my three children, providing my son William P. Carpenter pays a note that we gave together to ?????. If he fails to pay it, it must come from his portion with annual interest. It is further my will that Samuel Green shall manage the property, have full power to let the farm and to manage the personal property as a prudent farmer should and to let my wife have as much of the proceeds as is necessary for her support. Likewise I make, constitute and appoint Samuel J. Green of Harmony Chautauqua County and State of New York to be executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal the Twenty-fifth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy eight.

Signed
Timothy Carpenter

The above written instrument was subscribed by the said Timothy Carpenter in our presence, and acknowledged by him to each of us: and he at the same time declared the above instrument, so subscribed to be his last Will and Testament: and we, at his request, have signed our names as witnesses hereto, in his presence and in the presence of each other, and written opposite our names our respective places of residence.

Jane T(?) Morris Blockville, New York
Herbert M. Carpenter Blockville, New York
DeWitt M. Carpenter Blockville, New York

The name mentioned in the will as being owed money by William Carpenter was not readable. It appears to be Jane with the last name unknown. I am not sure. The will was found among some family papers.

2358. Ann Carpenter

Number 287 in TIMOTHY CARPENTER DESCENDANTS.
Adopted.  Reference to adoption is in the 1870 Harmony Twp. census.

1040. Jeremiah Carpenter Jr.

#88-3 in the T. Carpenter book.  Probably buried near his father's grave, many
unmarked plots holding Carpenters.  It is possible that Jeremiah had a son
named Jeremiah.  If so it must have been from a previous marriage.  Some
of the land transactions seem to indicate this.
JEREMIAH made numerous real estate deals in the Alden-Marilla-Wales area of
Erie County, N.Y. where he was among the earliest settlers:
1. Oct. 27, 1825, he and brother GEORGE purchased 100 acres for $500.00 (Lot
125, Twp. 10, 5th range).  In 1827, they purchased a tract on Four Rod Road,
east of Marilla, and Jeremiah started to erect a log home.
2. June 29, 1832 brother GEORGE and his wife ANNA conveyed 100 acres to
JEREMIAH for $600.00 in the Buffal Run area (Lot 138, Twp. 10, 5th Range).
3. May 6, 1835 JEREMIAH and wife HEPSIBETH conveyed 95 acre for $1700.00 in
Alden to a MILO CLARK.
4. In 1838 JEREMIAH and brother JOSEPH built a second sawmill. (where is #1?)
5. IN 1840, he settled in Marilla Village.
6. In 1838 JEREMIAH and brother JOSEPH conveyed a parcel at Wales for $1200.00.
7. JEREMIAH made two conveyences to brother NILES for $1.00 (one dollar) each,
the first in 1840 and the second in 1849.
8. In 1850, he conveyed land to a EDWIN CARPENTER. Possibly a son.
9. In 1851, he conveyed land to a JOHN C. CARPENTER and a GEORGE CARPENTER.
These were possibly his sons.  Maybe Nephews?
10. May 21, 1851 he conveyed to Methodist Espiscopal Church of Marilla trustees
for $500.00 a parcel of 5 chains and 25 links upon which a church was to be
erected.

JEREMIAH was elected Town Sealer at the first Town Meeting held in home of his
brother NILES March 7, 1854.  The conveyances he made to the people in number 8
and 9 above may have been to his sons, but there is no way, at this date
(1976), of so identifying them.   LISTED as sons 1992 pending more info.

Died between 1845-1848 based on name on one record then missing from the next.

Carpenter, George, age 23, of Cazenovia, married to Catharine Spear, age 20,
of Cazenovia, October 19, 1847, by Rev. E.J. Gillet, of Cazenovia.
Is this marriage for this George Carpenter?

2362. Niles Carpenter

Number 91-3 in the Timothy Carpenter book.
NILES CARPENTER built the first store in Marilla Village in 1847; it later
became part of the ALBERT ADAMS house.  He was succeeded in the business by
HARRISON T. FOSTER, who was followed by the MONCHOW family which, in 1975, was
still maintaining the business.  In 1849, brother JEREMIAH made a conveyance of
a parcel of land to NILES for $1.00 (one dollar).  On March 7, 1854, the first
Town Meeting of Marilla was held in the home of NILES CARPENTER.

SEE: Jeremiah (Sr) notes under E-MAIL2:  Possible error in placement of this person. Yes, wrong father.
NOTE: Niles was the son of Jeremiah Jr. and the grandson of Jeremiah (Sr).

1041. Joseph Carpenter

Number 89-3 in the Timothy Carpenter book.

JOSEPH was one of the early pioneers in the Wales/Marilla area of Erie County,
N.Y. and the second CARPENTER of record having owned land there as early as
1815.  He made numerous purchases and conveyances, as recorded at Buffalo, N.Y.
In 1828, he purchased a tract which include the present site of the village of
Marilla, settled near his brothers, and built a frame house and a saw mill.
In 1838, he and his brother JEREMIAH built a second saw mill, which was later
sold to a CHARLES CHAPPEL and finally abandoned in 1863.  There are wills on
file at Buffalo for numerous JOSEPH CARPENTERS, but the compiler (of the
Timothy Carpenter book) was unable to identify which one is that of this JOSEPH.

Research reveals that his wife was Anna.  They settle in Macedon, Wayne county, NY.
