Finally dug out my notes on Gregory vs McGregory.  A cousin has a copy of James Asa Carpenter's death cert which says his mother was "____________ Gregory" (no Mc).  I've seen it, but she never sent me the copy she promised.  This same cousin has been working with a Gregory researcher and got a file which is pretty well documented.  It has a Phebe Gregory b. 17 Oct 1795 to Joseph and Sarah (Thorn) Gregory.  A 1793 sibling is shown as born in Warren County, NY (this is Bolton/Bolton Landing's county).  A 1799 sibling married a Warren County lassie and had all his issue in Warren County.   A Phebe Carpenter, 54, died 2 May 1849 per Brownville, Jefferson, NY vitals.  This has her born about 1795.
Asa Carpenter (Phebe's spouse) was injured when his musket blew up in his face.  He went to a hospital in VT.  The War Dept letter which apparently is the source of the "Mc" describes this and gives his date of release.  The timing fits with a guy who leaves the hospital, goes around Lake Champaign to Bolton Landing, marries his childhood sweetheart, and heads on to Jefferson County where his father is.
Sorry about the delay. Have a happy holiday.
Ed

Phoebe Gregory

NAME:  Name changed from McGregory to Gregory - see father's notes.

NOTE:
Regarding Group 1 members of the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project
Schenectady County, New York was created in 1809 from Albany County.  Albany County was the orginal County created in 1683.
COMMENT:
Rensselaer County is adjacent to Albany County in 1800. The second county south is Dutchess County.
Saratoga County until 1809 is just north of Albany County. Now it is just north of Schenectady County.
All of these counties border the Hudson River which runs north to south.
The exception is Montgomery County created in 1772 from Albany County but was named Tyron County until 1784.
Hint: The Abraham Carpenter-185437 line winds up in Schenectady County.
NOTE:
Just north of Albany, NY the Mohawk River flows into the Hudson.
The Mohawk River flows eastward through Montgomery County then by Schenectady, Schenectady County, NY.
North of the Mohawk River is Saratoga County. The Mohawk River goes through Montgomery County threw Schenectady County before it enters the Hudson River.
Schenectady, NY to Albany, NY is about 20 miles.

NOTE:
This Family Line submitted by John E. Proctor (brn 1933) of Stilwell KS. 4/96

As stated by Art Carpenter in Jan of 1995, "I have a reference to Christopher being buried in the NE corner of the cemetary, but there are several cemetaries in the area, so we will need to write to them all to see if there is a record.
There is a museum in Marcellus that I tried to visit but it was closed when we were there, it is next to the city libary."  A contact there is Jonathan C. Carpenter 154 Lancaster St. Albany, NY 12210-1904

Christopher may have had a middle name, Daniel, no verification of this is available, just word of mouth. Others claim it as a letter C for Columbus. No  proof given. See GRAVE.

Additional information from Art Carpenter, 05/17/95, he had received a letter from someone in Gouverneur NY as follows: "I found the stone of Christopher Carpenter with the help of Jane Gates, a local historian.  She found the stone 2 years ago for someone else.  Christopher Carpenter was killed at _______ by falling off his wagon and his ________ passing over him.  Nov. 1, 1847, age 51 years and 1 mo."  A obituary card was also sent:  Christopher Carpenter, G. Stone Riverside Ceme., Sec. H.  He was killed at Summerville by falling from his wagon and the wheel passsed over him.  Died Nov. 4th, 1847, age 51 years 1 month.

Fay (Carpenter) & Jerry Ford submitted this summary in April of 2005:
Great, great grandparents: Christopher Carpenter was b. 4 Oct 1796 in NY; m. Henrietta Matthews (Greenman) in 1821 in or near Sand Lake, Rensselaer Co., NY.  Her first marriage was to Horace Greenman.  Christopher d. from a wagon accident 3 Sep 1847 in Sommerville, St. Lawrence Co., NY and was buried in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence Co., NY.  Henrietta b. 20 May 1796 in NY; d. 2 Oct 1883 in New Albion, Butler Co., IA.  They had ten children: John W., William L., Mary C., Daniel C., Philip, Joseph W., Abraham, Christopher D. Henrietta Matthews

Henrietta married William Greenman and they had four children.  Unknown if he died, they divorced, he or she left, but she remarried.  She married Christopher Carpenter, and they had 10 children.
A daughter of Henrietta and Christopher, Mary C., married a Greenman, and they had a son who they named William, (Will).  He never married and lived in Washington state after he grew up.  Mary was married three times so it is a little difficult to trace. (Info. from Art Carpenter 1/95)

OLD NOTES:
Abraham Carpenter - In Schenectady City, Schenectady County, New York, can trace Abraham Carpenter through the US Census documents in 1830 and 1840.  His wife and seven kids are named on the 1850 Census still in the same house in Schenectady, New York, but he is not; assuming he died, then he died between 1840 and 1850.  The 1830 Census shows that he was 30-40 years old at that time, which puts his birth between 1790 and 1800.
