Avon (/ˈeɪvən/) was a non-metropolitan and ceremonial county in the west of England that existed between 1974 and 1996. The county was named after the River Avon, which flows through the area. It was formed from the county boroughs of Bristol and Bath, together with parts of the administrative counties of Gloucestershire and Somerset.
In 1996, the county was abolished and the area split between four new unitary authorities: Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

John Carpenter of Aransas Pass, Texas passed away October 5, 2013 at home, surrounded by family.
John was born June 3, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Virginia Sheehan Carpenter and his sweet nephew, Frankie Bauregger.
John grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania with his three much loved sisters, Carol Carpenter and Sue Dixon of Iowa and Ann Oshlick of Erie, PA.John came to know the Lord and was born again in his thirties. He has been a longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene. He attended the Aransas Pass Church of the Nazarene until they closed their doors. They were then welcomed with open arms to the Portland Church of the Nazarene where he attended until his death. The church family has been an immense blessing to the Carpenters as the family has cared for John over the past few years.
John and Chris have three children, David, Megan and Colleen. They were the pride and joy of his life. John loved spending time with his kids, listening to them laugh and joke with each other. He was also very proud of his six grandkids. David and his wife Sarah have four children, Caleb, Lillian, Nathaniel, and Gabriel. John enjoyed letting them take apart his old motorcycle and teaching Caleb about the bagpipes. His daughter Megan and her husbandChris have two children, Evelyn and Emmett. John liked sneaking in to watch his newest grandbabies sleeping at night when they visited. He was able to watch Emmett's dedication at the Portland Church of the Nazarene last year when the whole family was together to celebrate John's retirement. His daughter Colleen attends TAMUCC pursuing her degree in Communications. She stayed home to help take care of him and keep her parents laughing and in high spirits until the end. Colleen was a great help to her mother as she cared for John at home during his last two years.After graduating from Strong Vincent high school in 1966 John volunteered for the Army and was sent right to Vietnam in 1967. He was an Airborne Ranger in the Signal Corps and served in the 173rd Airborne Brigade. While fighting during the TET Offensive he was shot, claymored, and bayoneted. He was sent home to finish his three year obligation and received the Purple Heart for his injuries.
Home from Vietnam, John went on many adventures. He backpacked throughout Europe and Ireland and spent a year living in Kenya where he befriended the Maasai, spoke Swahili, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, and helped catch a python for the local zoo.After developing a passion for skydiving as a Ranger in the Army, John and a friend started the Erie Skydiving Club. During that time he met and married his wife of 39 years, Christine Henry Carpenter. They moved around for different jobs including deep sea diving, welding, and working in the oil field. They moved to Florida, Louisiana and eventually Aransas Pass, Texas to work at Brown and Root. When they closed their doors he found work at the Corpus Christi Army Depot and worked there as a helicopter mechanic and inspector until his retirement last year.
John's Scottish heritage and bagpipe music were some of his greatest passions in life. He inherited his father's bagpipes and taught himself to play. In his free time, John played for his own enjoyment and that of his family. Word soon got around town that there was a piper in the area and he was asked to play for weddings, funerals, and military events. He was proud to have been named an Honorary Firefighter by the Corpus Christi Fire Department. He was instrumental in starting the Corpus Christi Fire Department Pipe and Drum Band with his best student, firefighter Dan Sheppard and his favorite teacher, Pipe Major Charlie Orr. In their off hours the pipe band was known as Water's Edge and they enjoyed getting together to practice, talk about music, laugh, and tell bagpipe jokes.A funeral service will be held at 11:00a.m., Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Northbay Fellowship Church, 3530 Main, Ingleside, TX. Graveside
Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Coastal Bend State Veteran's Cemetery in Corpus Christi, TX with full military honors.
The family has been blessed by the outpouring of prayers and help from their friends and family during the last difficult years of John's life. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Portland Church of the Nazarene's building fund.
