Notes

44. William "Buck" Carpenter

NOTE:
Per Carolyn Spence of Trinity, NC in a letter dated 8 Mar 1999.
2.  WILLIAM BUCK2 CARPENTER (WILLIAM1)1 was born 1802-1812, and died Bef. 1897.
He married (1) MELINDA RICHARDSON.  He married (2) NANCY BRANNOCK May 10, 1876
in Surry Co. NC.
Notes for WILLIAM BUCK CARPENTER:
I uncovered a mystery to me in the NC Marriage records.  It may be possible
that "Buck" re-married after Melinda's death. Surry Co. records:   William
Carpenter age 59, son of William and Rody Carpenter, both dead, married Nancy
Brannock age 30, daughter of William and Caty Brannock on May 10, 1876.
This same Nancy Brannock Carpenter, daughter of William and Katie Brannock
married at age 50 in Alleghany Co. NC, Ambrose Willey age 65, ( he fibbed about
his age. He was actually 75 or 76 ) father of Thomas Willey.  Date was
2/11/1897.   1900 Alleghany Census records show household consisting of Ambrose
Willey, Nancy, and Susan Carpenter Wolfe, step daughter and William Wolfe, son
in law.  Susan Carpenter Wolfe was born about 1879.  Susan was probably a
daughter of William Carpenter.
Nancy Brannock Carpenter Willey was Thomas Willey's step-mother.  If Nancy did
indeed marry "Buck" Carpenter, then Thomas Willey's wife Martha Jane Carpenter
was a step-daughter to Nancy Brannock Carpenter Willey also.  This could have
been how Thomas Willey and Martha Jane met.
Buck's children Creed and John's marriage licenses dated 1874 and 1876 state
their mother dead, their father living.  If this is the same William Carpenter,
then his parents were named William and Rody.
Information found 2-16-1999 by Carolyn Elliott at the Forsyth County Library: A
marriage license was found for Frances S. Carpenter and W.H. Wolfe who married
on 8-11-1899 says that Susan's parents were Buck and Nancy Carpenter.  So this
solves the above mystery.  Nancy Brannock Carpenter Willey was step-mother to
both Martha and Thomas Willey. It also proves that Buck Carpenter's parents
were William and Rody (Rhoda?) Carpenter.

MORE NOTES: He went by " Buck " Carpenter.
William  was age thirty-eight on the 1850 Surry , NC census. Lydia
was forty-one. Children: Collumbus Age eleven-Jesse age ten-Mary age 9-
Caroline age 8- Creed age 7- John age six- Elizabeth age 10 months.
Buck Carpenter was age sixty-eight on the 1870 Surry  census and
Malinda was age sixty. Children: Mary age thirty - Creed age twenty-three
- Caroline age twenty - John age nineteen - Bettie age sixteen - Albert
age sixteen ? -Jane age twelve.
NOTE: AUNT ROSA " Grandpa Carpenter was married 3 times. I don't know who
his second wife was. He married Jeff Brannock's mother. They did not have
children" (then who was Frances age two in the household below?)
NOTE: If in fact he was married three times, there are possibly other
children?
Between 1870 and 1880, Malinda has died and William remarried Nancy
Brannock 10-May-1876. He is age sixty-six and Nancy is thirty. He has a
stepson, Jefferson Brannock, age nine and a new daughter, Francis age
Two. All the older children are in households of their own. This census
taken 17-June-1880, by Wm. H. Wolf, probably a grandfather or uncle of
the William H. Wolf, son of John, who married Susan Francis.
There is also a grandson John T. Carpenter age 9 in his 1880 household,
probably John Thomas, son of Elizabeth.
Nancy Brannock Carpenter married 11- February -1897 Ambrose Willey
therefore, William probably died between 1880 and 1897.
NOTE:There was a William Carpenter age 32, wife Henrietta age 23 and son
Samuel age 7 months on 1860 Wilkes  census.
In 1870 Wilkes  census William is age 42, Henrietta is age 30, and
still only one child, Samuel age 9.
I haven't placed this William.

CHILDREN:  Carolyn does not have a separate Martha or an unknown child as
child number 12.  The unknown child probably was Frances Susan Carpenter who
came from the second marriage of "Buck".  She is probably correct.

Mr Carpenter, your CD about the Carpenters interests me. I have done some
research on my Carpenter family but know only a little more than when I
started the research.
James Ludwell Carpenter born 1776-1793 married 1) Beedy------ 2) Eleanor
Broadway.
He settled in Anson Co. N.C. Now Stanly Co in early 1800's. He died before
Nov.1853 and was buried on his homeplace in what is now Stanly Co. N.C.
Ludwell was my ggggrandfather.
His children were
Thomas   b.ca.1802
Lucy         b ca.1803
Williamson  b. ca. 1810
Gilliam b. ca.1813
Elizabeth
James b. ca.1814
Shelby b.ca. 1815 died Feb.12 1895
John
Beedy
William Doctor
Allen
Eleanor
Nancy
Churchwell
Simeon
Green
We have yet to find James Ludwell's parents. It is believed that William
(Buck) Carpenter that settled in Anson Co. was a brother to James Ludwell.
The father of James Ludwell may have been a son of John Carpenter of  Green
Co.Alabama.  John was a son of Thomas Carpenter of Nash Co. N.C.
I have some more information on some of these Carpenters.
Just wondered if you had run across any of these Carpenters in your
research.
Thank you Genoal Russell.

Melinda or Malinda Richardson

AFN 77RN-QM (Melinda) and CXR1-6T (Lidia) are the same person.

Per Carolyn Spence of Trinity, NC in a letter dated 8 Mar 1999.
Notes for MELINDA RICHARDSON:
I suspect that Melinda was a sister to Alexander Richardson, who married Martha
Cheek.  Alexander Richardson witnessed a deed for Andrew Willey in 1846. The
deed was selling land to Chesley Cheek.

NAME: aka: Lydia, Lidia and Liddie.

Civil War.  Possible Civil War MIA.

138. Carolina or Caroline Carpenter

No information has been found on Caroline. Some of the older children
of William and Lydia/Malinda Carpenter reportedly went to, possibly
Texas. Caroline may have been one of them. I have found no marriage
record for her.

Thanks for responding:  We'll try this ...
James W. Carpenter was born about 1861 in DeSoto County, Miss
He married Cass Crow about 1876-1879  They lived in Tate Co.
He died 11/11/1931 In Titus county, TX.
I believe that his father was John W. Carpenter born 1831-1833 in NC
Md Mary C  1853-1855
Died between 1861 and 1865  (in war?)
He was in  DeSoto Co, Miss in 1860 as J W, but 1863 Military Tax lists only
show John W.
1860 census shows worth of 4800 and 17,500
John and Mary's children:  J.B.  male about 1856  WT sex unknown abt 1858
James W. abt 1861
In 1870 DeSoto County Miss they are with J G Worrell and Mary has two new
Worrell children the oldest born about 1866.
If you need more, please contact me--have hit a brick wall.  Have been trying
to find military records for a JW  and found a Capt. JM Carpenter from
Tishomingo, Co who was killed 7/28/1864  and  a JW Carpenter who was found on a
POW list and muster records from2/15/1862-10-1864 from Pontotoc County, but
does not say if he lived or died.
Thank you for any assistance.  Have records on descendants if this matches up!!

E-MAIL: Subject: J.W. Carpenter of DeSoto Co. MISP Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999
From:  PaWZake@aol.com
Have been lurking for a while and now feel I can post:
1860 DeSoto MISP Census
               J.W. Carpenter, 29   NC
               M.C.                    23      GA
               J.B.                    4       MISP
               W.T.                    1       MISP
He had a personal value of 4800 and   17500.  That seems large for
those days and the surrounding valuations by others.  Granny said that they
lost a plantation in the War and that a town is now built where it was.  Is
this value enough for a small plantation??
1863 Military Tax Lists only a John W. Carpenter so probably is his name.
1870  De Soto Co  believe that the following is his wife and new husband.  If
this is her, then maybe J.W. was killed in Civil WAr.
       J.G. Worrell            42      TN
       Mary C                  32      GA
       J.B. Carpenter  14``  MISP
       W.T. Carpenter  12       MISP
       J.W. Carpenter   9      MISP
       Lilla Worrell            4
       Annie Worrell    1
Believe that either the JB or the JW is the following:
1880 Tate County MISP
               James Carpenter 24  MISP
               Cassa                23  MISP
               Willie                   1 MISP
James and Cassa(na) were married in Carroll County 2/28/1878.
Cass's father Riley Crow married his second wife Elizabeth Johnson in Carroll
County 1/17/1878.
Believe that J.G. Worrell and Mary may have moved to Caroll County after 1870.
Have not been able to match my James W. Carpenter who married Cassana with
any Carrol County Carpenters.
Am new to this so any leads appreciated.

Subject: Notes for John H Carpenter
Hi John,
Are PaWZake@aol.com and wrenn37@yadtel.net still living? They might have some info on my Carpenter ancestors.
I looked over their notes on John H Carpenter, b.1816, Surry, NC that you have on your Carpenter/Zimmerman family tree on Family Search (). I zeroed in on him because I'm researching my greatgreatgrandfather, J W Carpenter.
I'm 90% sure of the following 3 points:
1. John H is not J W Carpenter.
There's at least a 10 yr age discrepancy when you compare them on the 1850 & 1860 US Census.
Death certificates for J W's sons, W T & J B, list his initials as J W, not J H.
2. James W is not Johnny William, the son of J W and brother of J B and WT.
The 1900 US Census lists Johnny William's name as John W. Living next to both of his brothers.
The 1910 US Census lists John W and his family.
His reat grandson says his name was Johnnie W.
3. The correct surname for Mary C Carpenter's second husband was Norvell, not Novvell or Worrell.
The type written death certificates for their daughters, Lillie and Annie, list his name as Norvell.
W T's typed death certificate lists Mary's name as Mary Norvell Carpenter
The 1870 and 1880 US Census show that the name definitely starts with an N.
I'm always open to new information and evidence. I also realize that this is just 1 family out of the many you're trying to keep track of.

John R. and John F.,
Apologies for not replying to this earlier. I have not been able to place Lewis Peter Carpenter in an established family group, so I carry him in my notes as possibly descended from the Nash Co. NC Reuben Carpenter via Wake Co. NC where he was taxed in 1840, or from the Carpenters A'Plenty group (Group 5), or the Germanna group (Group 22). Hopefully the YDNA will resolve this issue.

did not really know what I was doing (still don't) several people that I
talked with, at that time said that they thought Phillip was a son of
William or, rather a brother of William Jr.

54. Peter Carpenter

QUESTION:
Was this the Peter Carpenter noted in the 1870 Census of Vernon Precinct,
Christian county, KY in 1870?  Page 19.  Spouse and children from that Census.
His Sister Jane Carpenter was listed with a Lurena Armer age 13 born in Tenn.
On page 18 of the same census is a Family headed by James B. Carpenter, age 24
KY with Spouse Mary A., age 20 KY, with a James H. Carpenter, age 17 born in TN.
On page 17 of the same census is a Family headed by John E. Carpenter, age 31
born in KY a farmer, with Spouse Arabella, age 27 KY and child Henrietta A.,
age 6 KY.   It is supposed that all head of households are related as father to
sons.  Exceptions being those not beng born in KY.

168. James B. Carpenter

CENSUS: 1870 Census of Christian County, KY, Page 18, Mt. Vernon Precinct.
Carpenter, James B. age 24 KY, Mary A. age 20 KY, with James H. age 17 TN.

55. William Carpenter

PARENT UNKNOWN - Maybe William "Will" Carpenter-204091 b. abt 1756/1764.

NAME:
AKA William Senior

COMMENT:
I suspect that William Carpenter-203369 (b. abt 1776/1786) was likely born in or around Nash County, North Carolina and was related to Thomas Carpenter-5337 (b. 1740 - d. 6 Aug 1803) there, but not as father and son. Because of the two mutations that #904049 has to the Group 13 mean, these two Carpenters were likely close cousins. Maybe a nephew to Uncle? Or less likely siblings.  John R. Carpenter 15 May 2019.
UPDATE:
It appears/speculation that the father was William "Will" Carpenter b. abt 1756/1764 and his father was Samuel Carpenter possible brother to Thomas Carpenter-5337. See the notes for them for what little info there is. JRC 3 June 2019.

NOTE:
Alabama was a territory in 1817 and made a state in 1819.
Greene County Alabama was created in 1819 from Marengo and Tuscaloosa Counties.
Marengo County was crreated in 1818 from the Choctaw cession of 1816.
Tuscaloosa County was created in 1818 from the Cherokee and Choctaw cession of 1816.
It was the explusion of Native Americans after the War of 1815 from certain areas of what would be Alabama that provided for settlement of those new counties.

CENSUS: 1790 US Census - nothing close found nearby.

CENSUS: 1800 US Census - same person? Two entries.
I am assuming something like a son/father connection rather than cousins.

William Carpenter
Birth: unknown
Death: 18 Nov 1836 Greene County, Alabama, USA
Burial: Unknown
Memorial #: 132642137
Bio:
William's birth is estimated to be between 1771-1780 with North Carolina as the birthplace passed down through the family lore.
His children with Priscilla Manning are: James, Simeon, Mary Jones wife of William Jones, John, Thomas, and William, Jr. [List taken from image 1063 of 1547 of William's probate record: Greene County, Alabama, Estate Case Files, 1820-1915; Author: Alabama. Probate Court (Greene County); Probate Place: Greene, Alabama as found on Ancestry.com]
William is only referred to as Sr in a couple of pages of his probate file and nowhere else, so though he has a son who is always referred to as William Jr, having Sr after his name is not appropriate as no other documents list him as Sr.
His burial location is currently unknown, though likely in Greene County, Alabama.

Subject: Y-DNA contemprary families A & B --- group 13
John,
The attached PDF document is meant to serve as a reference to distinguish between family members in the Carpenter-Cousins Y-DNA group 13 who belong to contemporary family A-- C # 5337(descendants of Thomas Carpenter Nash, NC) & Contemporary family B-- 203369 (Descendants of William Carpenter, Sr)
--hopefully will help with all the confusion
Still subject to review & edit for possible errors, but from what I can determine so far:
Cousins, James, son of William Carpenter, Sr 203369 & Jubelll, son of John Carpenter appear to be the first settlers in Green County from the Carpenter Clan Y-DNA group 13.
Ref to James “Will Probate” actually refers to his role as guardian for the minor children of his sister, Polly married to Brinkley Gandy, deceased.
Siblings James, Polly C Brinkley, Simon & William, Jr are shown as early entrants. I believe it was William, Sr who sold his property in 3/11/1824 Nash, NC and moved to Green, Al by 1825 which could account financially for his sizable estate In Greene, AL (not to be confused with William # 5455, son of Thomas Carpenter and later resident of Surry, NC.)
William Carpenter of 1830 Green appears to be William Carpenter, SR. I suspect that William, Jr moved prior to 1830 to Miss.
Jennifer Miller, descendant of Thomas Carpenter 1805 Nash, NC -1901 Texas (son of William Carpenter, Sr 203369) has joined in to assist in the search for a male descendant.
Currently, our possibilities appear to be slim to none: male descendants appear to fizzle out on every possibility.

172. James Carpenter

BIRTH:
Need to verify birthdate. 22 May 1800 was provided but not documented where that came from. Possible twin? Per census records born about 1800/1801.

DEATH:
Info from Probate record.
The earliest date given in the probate is 13 Aug 1859 for a note due but not yet paid.
And on 25 Jul 1870 the Court accepts Wiley Coleman as administrator and accepts his lists of heirs of the intestate who died on or about ___ October 1869 about 60 years of age.
Census records indicate James C-203370 birth as about 1800/1801 and you provide 22 May 1800. The age last paragraph is widely different making him born about 1809. Likely a best guess!
And elsewhere we see death as 10 Aug 1869 despite it being unreferenced in the Find A Grave entry. I received the death date of 8 Oct 1869 but undocumented. The later more akin to what was reported on 25 Jul 1870 record above, less the age.
Per Guy - 8 Oct 1869 is on a picture of the grave marker for this James.  (23 June 2019)
