NOTE:
His will mentions wife Mary M. A. Carpenter. He bequeaths her his properties and negros that are mentioned by name. To wit:  Adaline aged about 22, & two children Alfonzo a boy aged 4 years, Rufus a boy aged 10 months.  Antonette, a girl about 16 years old, S(?)abner a man aged 21 years, Tom a boy aged 17 years, Dick a boy aged 12 years.
She keeps all properties until she dies or re-marries. Then the rest goes to his descendants.
"I give and bequeath to my only son William my Gold watch and chain ..."
Will dated 7 May 1861.
On 17 Nov 1873, the court ordered the sale of properties to the said estate. This likely due to the death of Mary the wife. On 17 Jan 1784, the properties have been sold. There are then a series of receipts mostly 1904ish (1902 to 1907) where a W. G. McCracken is listed as guardian of Miss Mattie E. Morrow. Later I see an Abner Morrow listed a few times.
Later there are ledger pages of financial accounts. W. G. McCracken dies and Margaret F. McCracken takes over and provides a final accounting on 4 Jun 1906.
Mattie Morrow - widow
Mattie Morrow - daughter
Abner Morrow - son
Charles Morrow - son deceased
SEE:  image 665 of 1819 where it lists the ages of those on the estate of Andrew R. Morrow, deceased. How they are related to the estate of Samuel T. Carpenter was missed in the first read through.

Named a Littleberry in his grandfather's William Carpenter estate papers. The name Berry A. is used in a related 1857 document after his grandmother Priscilla Carpenter dies in 1856. The petiton was by his uncle Simeon Carpenter.

BIRTH:
Census records indicate birth about 1828. However the Military enlistment indicates age 24 in 1862 making him born about 1838.  Did he lie about his age to join?  Maybe.

COMMENT:
The last given date of his being in the military is the end of the month Muster roll for October 1863.
For me the assumption is that Berry A. Carpenter died sometime after that and before the end of the fighting.  The best guess is late 1863 or early 1864. Say abt Oct 1863/1864. JRC
Most historians provide April 12, 1861 to April 9, 1865 as the American Civil War. However that last date is when General Lee surrendered his Army at Appomattox. Men still died in battle after that date for the last accepted fight occurred at the Battle of Palmito Ranch in Texas on 12 May 1865.
Technically President Andrew Johnson would declare a formal end to Congress on 20 August 1866!

NOTE:  Good general history of Regiment. Company M mentioned once.
In general orders, General Jackson mentioned that "Sergeant Barlow and seventeen privates of Company M, Col. Wirt Adams' Regiment of cavalry, on July 11 (1863) attacked and destroyed, near Clinton, Miss., a Federal train of 13 wagons, capturing and bringing off 41 prisoners, including two commissioned officers, 41 mules, and mortally wounding a Quartermaster."

MISSISSIPPI 1ST CAVALRY REGIMENT ~ WIRT ADAMS'
Good listing of Assignments and Battles the Regiment was in.
For example we know Carpenter was alive at the end of October 1863. the following battles took place there after. Please remember that more soldiers died of disease than anything else.
Meridian Campaign (February-March 1864);  <---- most likely died of disease or less likely of wounds?
Concord Church (December 1, 1864)
Wilson's Raid (March-April 1863) <--- This was in 1865

Good basic overview for research - One tibit on the Regiment is:
It confronted the Federals in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama, but for the most part it fought in Mississippi. In December, 1861, it contained 29 officers and 400 men, and in January, 1863 there were 35 officers and 539 men present for duty. Few surrendered in May, 1865.

Effort to show how companies were combined and some info on enlisted. No Carpenters. Company M mentioned: 2nd Company M was organized on May 3, 1862 and was subsequently assigned to this regiment.

E-MAIL: Re: Carpenter 2000CD Date: 99-06-01
From: PaW Zake@aol.com To: JRCRIN001
Thanks for responding:  We'll try this ...
James W. Carpenter was born about 1861 in DeSoto County, Miss
He married Cass Crow about 1876-1879  They lived in Tate Co.
He died 11/11/1931 In Titus county, TX.
I believe that his father was John W. Carpenter born 1831-1833 in NC
Md Mary C  1853-1855
Died between 1861 and 1865  (in war?)
He was in  DeSoto Co, Miss in 1860 as J W, but 1863 Military Tax lists only
show John W.
1860 census shows worth of 4800 and 17,500
John and Mary's children:  J.B.  male about 1856  WT sex unknown abt 1858
James W. abt 1861
In 1870 DeSoto County Miss they are with J G Worrell and Mary has two new
Worrell children the oldest born about 1866.
If you need more, please contact me--have hit a brick wall.  Have been trying
to find military records for a JW  and found a Capt. JM Carpenter from
Tishomingo, Co who was killed 7/28/1864  and  a JW Carpenter who was found on a
POW list and muster records from2/15/1862-10-1864 from Pontotoc County, but
does not say if he lived or died.
Thank you for any assistance.  Have records on descendants if this matches up!!

E-MAIL: Subject: J.W. Carpenter of DeSoto Co. MISP Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999
From:  PaWZake@aol.com
Have been lurking for a while and now feel I can post:
1860 DeSoto MISP Census
               J.W. Carpenter, 29   NC
               M.C.                    23      GA
               J.B.                    4       MISP
               W.T.                    1       MISP
He had a personal value of 4800 and   17500.  That seems large for
those days and the surrounding valuations by others.  Granny said that they
lost a plantation in the War and that a town is now built where it was.  Is
this value enough for a small plantation??
1863 Military Tax Lists only a John W. Carpenter so probably is his name.
1870  De Soto Co  believe that the following is his wife and new husband.  If
this is her, then maybe J.W. was killed in Civil WAr.
       J.G. Worrell            42      TN
       Mary C                  32      GA
       J.B. Carpenter  14``  MISP
       W.T. Carpenter  12       MISP
       J.W. Carpenter   9      MISP
       Lilla Worrell            4
       Annie Worrell    1
Believe that either the JB or the JW is the following:
1880 Tate County MISP
               James Carpenter 24  MISP
               Cassa                23  MISP
               Willie                   1 MISP
James and Cassa(na) were married in Carroll County 2/28/1878.
Cass's father Riley Crow married his second wife Elizabeth Johnson in Carroll
County 1/17/1878.
Believe that J.G. Worrell and Mary may have moved to Caroll County after 1870.
Have not been able to match my James W. Carpenter who married Cassana with
any Carrol County Carpenters.
Am new to this so any leads appreciated.
