John,
I finally found the 1830 census date, on the very last page of Jackson County.
It says " the number of persons within my division consisting of three thousand nine hundred and seven
appears in the forgoing schedule subscribed by me the twenty ninth day of November in the year
one thousand eight hundred and thirty." James P. Love
That is the only date mentioned. There is 30 pages and William Carpenter appears on page 26. This means that there was no wedding in June of 1830. One of my cousins, who has now passed on, has their marriage
taking place in 1834 at the Providence Baptist Church, in his records.
I will try and check out the church records up there.

Betty,
The 1830 US Census was started on 1 June 1830 and it was the first printed form. All info was to be based on that date.
The official enumeration day of the 1830 census was 1 June 1830. All questions asked were supposed to refer to that date. The count was due within six months, but the due date was extended by law to allow completion within twelve months. By 1830, there were a total of twenty-four states in the Union, Missouri being the latest addition. The new territory of Florida also had its first census in 1830.
Since William Carpenter and Isabella Baker were not married until 30 June 1830 - William (1805-1857 per tombstone) should not be the head of household. I would double check the date of when the census was taken. The date should be on the census form. If it was before 30 June then this helps.
The following information was recorded by the census taker: Free white males under 5 Free white males 5-10 Free Males 10-15 Free Males 15-20 Free Males 20-30 <---- William born 1805 should be in this category at age 25 Free Males 30-40 Free Males 40-50 Free Males 50-60 Free Males 60-70 Free Males 70-80 Free Males 80-90 Free Males 90-100 Free Males over 100 Free Females same as males Slaves & free colored Categories for deaf, dumb, blind & aliens
Can you double check your copy of the 1830 US Census?
If William (b. 1805) is off by one category then the others may be off also. Thus the head of household would not be 30-40 but 40-50. This would put the HOH named William born circa 1780-1790 and his wife would be about the same age. Then you have a female 60-70 or maybe the next category of age which would be the mother (likely) or a boarder of HOH or his wife.

Marriage to Isabella Baker June 30, 1830 -I have also seen the marriage year as 1834-1835. Isabella was born February 17, 1811 in North Carolina, she came with her parents, John Cana and Christian Daniel Baker in 1825 to Dellwood, Jackson County, Florida. 1834 Bought land in Jackson County 1836 - William Carpenter, Pvt. Capt. Long's Co. 7th Regt. Florida Mil. Joined July 6, 1836 in Marianna, Florida. On Company Muster Rolls for July 6 to November 6, 1836. Field and Staff Muster Roll shows he was stationed near Fort Heileman. He had a card#11862672 and a reference #H58H-LT. The records show the Florida 2nd Seminole Indian War lasted from 1835-1843. Past generations of the Carpenter Family said that he was an Indian Scout for General Jackson. But I have nothing to back that up. 1837 - William purchased 40 acres

The eldest female is 20 to 30  (Isabella) with 2 females under 5 (one is Frances). The eldest female would then be born about 1810 to 1820.

In the Second Creek War, only one unit of Florida volunteers mustered, which served for 11 days in the spring of 1839. The bulk of men listed in this database served in the Florida War (or Second Seminole War) between 1835 and 1842. About 700 Florida volunteers served in the Third Seminole War (1855-1858).
FYI2: His widow applied for a pension with the filing date of 27 Aug 1892. Per that info, her husband served in Loreg's Co. Fla Vols (Florida War).

Hi John,
I will try and answer some of your questions.
1. The 1850 Census lists William's birthplace as Virginia.
2. I have pictures of William's tombstone it says -
"Sacred to the Memory of William Carpenter"
born - July 18, 1805 Died -March 15 1857
A second stone says "Wm. Carpenter 7th Mil. Fla. Indian War"
The Military Certificate for this stone says he died March 10, 1857.
He is buried in Carpenter's Cemetery, Grand Ridge, Jackson County, Florida
The land for Carpenter's Cemetery is part of the Carpenter's homestead.
First used in 1856 and is still used today.
3. William Carpenter was only married once to Isabella Baker. They were married,
June 30, 1830 In Jackson County, Florida.
Their children were the following:
1. Frances - July 25, 1836 - March 13, 1907
2. William - January 2, 1838 -November 16, 1922
3. Henry - November 12, 1840 - August 30, 1812 (never married)
4. James M. -November 15, 1841 - September 8, 1908 (my GGrandfather)
5. Elizabeth (Bettie) October 9, 1843 - December 24, 1908
6. John Joseph - November 15, 1845 - February 5, 1900
7. Ann - April 24, 1848 - November 1929
8. Mary - 1851
9. Issac- March 11, 1856 - December 2, 1856 (first one buried in Carpenter's Cemetery)
I have William's land records in Florida for 1834, 1835, 1837, 1852, and 1855, he owned 250 acres when he died.
William shows up in 1830, 1840, 1850 Florida Census's. Isabella never remarries and lives on
family homestead until her death in 1897. She has a wonderful obituary.
William's occupation was a carriage maker and a farmer.
July 6, 1836, Pvt. William Carpenter served in the 2nd Seminole Indian War, also known
as the 7th Regt. Fla. Mil. (Card # 11862672).
I also have a picture of GG Grandfather William and G Grandfather James M.
I hope some of this information helps us find William's family. Just about everybody
on Ancestry.com has him married 2 or 3 times. I have looked for a Carpenter family in
Virginia who had a son under the age 10 in 1810, but there are so many.
Happy New Year from Florida
Betty

COUNTY INFO:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackson_County,_Florida
Jackson County was created by the Florida Territorial Council in 1822 out of Escambia County , along with Duval County out of St. Johns County,  making them the third and fourth counties in the Territory. The county was named for Andrew Jackson, who had served as Florida's first military governor for six months in 1821. Jackson County originally extended from the Choctawhatchee River on the west to the Suwannee River on the east. The county had been reduced close to its present boundaries by 1840 through the creation of new counties from its original territory. Minor adjustments to the county boundaries continued through most of the 19th century, however.
There were no towns in Jackson County when it was formed. The first county court met at what was called "Robinson's Big Spring" (later called Blue Springs) in 1822 and then at the "Big Spring of the Choctawhatchee" in 1823.  ...

Jackson county borders the state of Alabama and Georgia.
Just to the north in Alabama is Houston County which was established on February 9, 1903, from parts of Dale County, Geneva County and Henry County.
Just to the east is Seminole County, a county located in Georgia. Seminole County was proposed July 8, 1920, and ratified November 2, 1920. The area for the new county was taken from land originally part of Decatur and Early Counties. It is named for the Seminole tribe of Native Americans, who once lived in the area.

Hi John, Just checking in to see if there is anything new going on with Group 15. Did any of the others get the results back on upgrading to 67 markers? How often do you update the data base? I have been doing a lot of research on my William Carpenter. I have come to the conclusion that the tomb stone date is wrong, and he is the right age, 30-40, on the 1830 census, with a first wife, and Isabella being the second wife. This may provide more possibilities. Do you have any information on a Joseph Carpenter, born in Virginia in 1750? His father William was born in New York died in Botetourt county, Virginia in 1763 he had several sons, Jeremiah, Benjamin and Solomon to name a few. I found lots of information on all the family except Joseph. My cousin Randy whose father was Wayne N. Carpenter said his father saw the Carpenter Family Bible when he was going around and interviewing all the Carpenter Families back in the 70's. The Bible had William born in Virginia, and his father's name was Joseph. After doing some research for a Joseph in Virginia, he found Joseph Carpenter and Catherine Blankenbaker who had a son named William and then his birth year matched up with the 1830 census. That's how all that misinformation is now out there. Betty

----from a newspaper article of unknown orgin---
Recently I received a note from Mrs. Zynettia Smith of Tarpon Springs suggesting that I write to her aunt, Mrs. Issie Hill of Sneads, requesting copies of newspaper articles giving interesting family history and the obituary of her great grandmother, Mrs Isabella Carpenter, who died in 1897 at the age of 86.
In compliance with my request Mrs. Hill sent me a copy of the obituary of Mrs. Carpenter, whih in addition to paying her high tribute, contains much information of historical value.
"At her residence, one mile northwest of Grand Ridge, FL, on January 29th, 1897, Mrs. Isabella Carpenter died in the 86th year of her age."
"Deceased was born in Cumberland County, NC, on February 17, 1811, of Scotch parentage, and in early life was taught in that high type of morals that made her in all respects a model woman amongst. those with whom she lived. She came with her parents to Jackson County when but 14 years old, and in 1834 was married to William Carpenter. The fruits of this union are five boys and four girls, eight of whom survive her.
"William Carpenter died in 1856, leaving her a widow for the past 40 years. She lived on the same section of land on which she died for the past 60 years.
"During the Indian War while her husband was in active service and when her nearest neighbor on the west was at the Blue Springs and the nearest on the east not far north of Sneads, Fla., she was left with her first born child, and a Negro boy and for several nights left the house and took shelter in the cow pen to elude the Indians.
"At another of these early times when some distance from her house. when her husband was absent and had with him their pack of dogs, she was pursued by wolves, but reached her home in safety.
"HER HOUSE WAS on the Wire Road. and one of the stage stands or stopping places, and few of the early public men of the state but were her guests of some time. Her home has been the polling place of the ninth district for many years.
A volume might be written of interesting experiences in the long life of this good mother, now gone to rest much of it will come into the minds of many who read these lines.
She remembered Marrianna, Fla. when there was but one house in it.
She managed her business affairs with singular success and leaves considerable of am estate, which will be subdivided without the aid of executor or administrator, there being no debts nor minor heirs.
But best of all that may be said of the deceased, she was Christian, having, as before stated, been well taught childhood. In the early part her married life church privileges were very poor and she first professed religion 30 years ago and united with the Providence Baptist Church. in which she remained a faithful and consistent member during remainder or her life.
"Four sons, four daughters, 32 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren remain to inherit the blessing of a noble ancestry."
end

352. Henry Carpenter

Henry Carpenter b. 11-12-1840 d. 8-30-1912, PVT 2nd FL CAV CSA. Never married, but had a child which his sister raised.

CIVIL WAR Veteran: PVT 2nd FL CAV CSA.
William Carpenter Jr. and Henry Carpenter first served in 1861 in Jackson Black Hawk Cavalry. They enlisted 19 Oct 1861. This company was commanded by Captain A. B. Hamilton. This company formed a part of the 1st Regiment, 1st Brigade, Florida Volunteer Militia which was commanded by Lt. Col. Thomas C James and called into the service of the state by Gov. Milton on 19 Oct 1861, for a term of six months unless sooner discharged.
The mustering officer, C.M. Harris, certified to the correctness of the roll, the condition of their horses, equipment and their acceptance into the service of the state for the term specified.

Henry Carpenter enlisted on 22 Aug 1863 at Camp Milton (Blue Springs, FL) in Capt. W.H. Milton's Calvary, Company G 2nd FL Calvary.
Henry Carpenter was actively engaged in the Battle of Natural Bridge, Battle of Ocean Pond, Cedar Creek Ford and at Gainesville. He was in Captain Henry Simmon's Company.
The 2nd Florida Calvary was formed from independent companies in late 1862. Caraway Smith, who commanded an independent company known as the Aucilla Troop, was elected colonel of the new regiment. The unit served in North and Central Florida for the remainder of the war, but was seldom united together into a unified command. The second was involved in numerous small skirmishes during the period 1863-1865, and elements of the regiment were present at Olustee, Gainesville, the capture of Columbine Station 4 and natural Bridge. Colonel Smith was severely criticized after Olustee for failing to aggressively persue the retreating federal forces and thus allowing them to escape back to Jacksonville.
Henry Carpenter was honorably discharged at Baldwin, FL on 17 May 1865.
Henry Lost two fingers on left hand in 1855 in an accident. In 1880 he was said to have bilious fever (liver ailment). In 1864 he was thrown from a horse and suffered from dislocation of the left shoulder joint (broke his left clavicle bone). Before he died in 1912 he was disabled by rheumatism.
