Likely was connected and fairly well financially? Likely married and working in London?
Maybe John Carpenter or John Davis Carpenter?
NOT married to Sarah Walker Davies even though she gave birth to two children with the middle names of Carpenter.
NOTE:  Is this RIN 179842 John Carpenter chr 7 Mar 1830?  YES!

Brian,
- 4 Salisbury Court and nearby Carpenters 1854-1855.
I was unable to find Half Paved Court on Google, but it is on the same Land Tax Record page as Salisbury Court. See attached screenshot 41. If the link works for you ... Click here.
It is interesting that Josh Carpenter in 1858 is basically where William Carpenter is in 1860 and 1861 per the Land Tax Records.
John Carpenter at Wine Office Court (1862-1865) is a 2 minute walk from Salisbury Court. See the attached (screenshot 40) from Google. But we have a distance of about 7 years between 1855ish and 1862.
Using 1858, we have a 3 year gap for this location and a close proximity for where Sarah Davies and a Carpenter where once living.
The goal is to narrow the gap even more and if we are lucky, a similarity of Carpenter forenames.
- 4 Salisbury Court and nearby Davis 1854-1858.
What is even more interesting is we have the Davis surname at St Bride during this period.
In 1854 in the City Gas Company building at 94 Dorset St. has George J. Davis.
In 1854 at 28 Wilderness Lane is a George Davis. Salisbury Square is on the same Land Tax Record page and Salisbury Court on the previous page.
In 1858 at 31 Red Lion Passage is George J. Davis.
In 1858 102 Dorset St. has George J. Davis.
In 1858 on Great New Street is a James Davis.
One can assume that George J. Davis worked at Dorset St. and lived at Wilderness Lane then Red Lion Passage. (1854 and 1858)
- 6 Norfolk Rd Marylebone and nearby Carpenters.
Focusing on lodgers and other single male Carpenters, I find 7 born abt 1827 to 1834. See attached (screenshot 42). The forenames being Henry, James, Joseph, Henry, John, Henry and Charles.
When comparing to the Salisbury Court Carpenters we find only the forename John in common. And interestingly enough, he is the only Carpenter listed as being born (about 1830) in Wiltshire. Cherhill is about 29-30 miles North north-east from Horningsham.
Add in that once you told me that John Davis was once listed as a father to John Carpenter Davis, that forename John is an interesting coincidence.
- 6 Norfolk Rd Marylebone and nearby Davis.
There are many Davis families in 1851 in Marylebone. But only one Sarah. She being the wife of Phillip Davis (b. abt 1826 in Croydon, Surrey, England) and born about 1829 in Marylebone, Middlesex, England.
See attached (screenshot 43). See also link:

What appears strange is that Phillip shows up in 1851, but goes missing with the same data listed in this 1856 census. The exception is wedding Banns (14 Aug 1853 at Christ Church, St. Marylebone) and a marriage
(21 Aug 1853 also at Christ Church) in 1853 some 2 years after the 1851 census. See the link noted above and the suggested records for more details. The marriage shows ...
Name: Sarah Walker
Spouse: Philip Davies
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 21 Aug 1853
Parish: Christ Church, St Marylebone
Borough: Westminster
Father Name: William Walker
Spouse Father: Philip Davies
Register Type: Parish Register
This gets the juices of imagination flowing. A possible scenario ...
Sarah Walker and Phillip Davis have a common law marriage in 1851 and apparently have no children. This is as of 30 March 1851 which set by the 1851 census.
Sarah Walker and Phillip Davis have a Church wedding in August 1853 because she is now pregnant. If impregnated say in early April 1853, she and others know she is pregnant by August because of body changes and that she is clearly showing.
A daughter of Sarah Davies, is born on 13 December 1854 (4 months later) at 6 Norfolk Rd Marylebone. No father was named on the birth certificate. Before the birth Phillip is aware the child is not his and he is gone. Sarah Davies(Davis) is in dire straits and alone. She likely contacts the biological father.
The daughter is christened Julia Carpenter Davies on 11 March 1855, as the daughter of Sarah Davies of 4 Salisbury Court, at St Bride, Fleet St, City of London. No mention of a father or of a parental trade or profession.
Normally a child is christened within a month of birth. This situation is almost a 3 month delay. Why? My guess is that arrangements were made to take care of the child and the mother. Without a formal marriage. They were moved closer to the biological father before the christened date of the daughter.
The arrangements must have been more than adequate since Sarah becomes pregnant once again by early June 1855 and a son is born 3/4 Mar 1856.
Could John Carpenter be the biological father of the two children of Sarah (nee Walker) Davis? Maybe.
A John Carpenter and Sarah Davis are in the same town and parish (Marylebone) as of 30 Mar 1851. Sarah becomes pregnant say April 1853 – we now have a 2 year separation of time in the same geographic location. Sarah becomes pregnant again in say June 1855.
But, we can only document a John Carpenter within a 2 minute walk from where Sarah lived with a 7 year time separation.
The John Carpenter born about 1830 in Cherhill, Wiltshire, England can be traced from 1851 to 1871 in the census. He may have remarried by 1881 or have died. He is likely ...

I will try to trace his line to determine if his ancestry connects with the Horningsham Carpenters. I have already seen that he is moving around in each of the 10 year census records. And he may have have wound up in Cardiff St John, Glamorganshire, Wales in 1881 with a new wife. But I have not confirmed that yet.
On a different tack, I live in La Mesa (Spanish for the table) about 14 miles inland along the Interstate 8 corridor in San Diego County, California.
Los Angeles International airport is about 130 miles (abt 209 klicks) to the north of me. Without traffic (say from 11PM to before 5AM) about two hours. With traffic much more than two hours!
The Horningsham genealogical line is pretty solid as posted on the Carpenter Cousins lineage page. But, the last attempt to push it back further in time failed genetically. I can see the potential of multiple Carpenter lines in Horningsham since we have found now 3 genetic lines from there!
I hope you find this interesting, because I surely do!
Let me know what you think of my missive on Sarah Walker, Phillip Davies (Davis) and the potential John Carpenter.
Merry Christmas!

John
Many thanks for that and for following up on my family history
I must say I hadn’t followed up ownership and rent records so this morning I went to ancestry.co.uk which I have at home and found in the London Metropolitan Archives some rent records for the area around St Bride..it was obviously quite an upmarket area
There was a Josh Carpenter in Half Paved Court in 1858, a William Carpenter there in 1860 (proprietor Earl de la Ware) and then a John Carpenter in Wine Office Court in 1862,63,64 and 65
Do you have other suggestions for searching, I have access to Family Search at home and Find My Past at the Auckland Library...not far away
Thank you for your earlier work in taking ‘our’ tree...at leapt George Carpenter’s .... back to Oliver Carpenter in about 1560...how ‘secure/certain’ do you think the connection is? It certainly looks very likely..I should go and look at the film for the early BMDs
Thank you again.
Incidentally my wife Anne and I will be in Los Angeles next April...about the 10th...how central are you?
Kind regards Brian

Subject: Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - 298606 - question
Brian,
I hope all is well with you.
In doing a review, I asked myself, did he ever checked the rents or ownership for 4 Salisbury Court, at St Bride, Fleet St, City of London about 1855ish?
This in reference to:
… I had seen the baptism of a Julia Carpenter Davies. The birth certificate duly showed a Julia Carpenter Davies, daughter of Sarah Davies, born on 13 December 1854 at 6 Norfolk Rd Marylebone. No father was named on the certificate. The baptismal record showed her born on 13 December and baptized 11 March 1855, daughter of Sarah Davies of 4 Salisbury Court, at St Bride, Fleet St City of London. No mention of a father or of a parental “trade or profession.”
If there was a Carpenter there in this time period, it could be the one associated with Sarah Davies.
My reasoning is the sudden move from Marylebone to to the more upper end and business centered Fleet Street area around 4 Salisbury Court. This is an historical area and many records list tenants.
Julia being the first child of Sarah and they suddenly moving may indicate they were being taken care of. And if the male suitor was not experienced enough, he may have left his name on the rents or ownership. If the location is dominantly for one business (like a newspaper) then the Carpenter suitor would be likely associated with such business.
Curious!

Your John? Carpenter-179839 (father of JCD-179834 b. 4 Mar 1856 Kentish Town) is likely John Carpenter-179842. That John Carpenter is living in Marylebone, very close to Sarah Davies the mother of JCD-179834 in 1851. Sister JCD is born 13 Dec 1854 Marylebone, London, Middlesex, England.
Where was JC-179842 in the critical siring months of Feb 1854 and May 1855 for JCD & JCD respectively?
JC-179842 married in Jan-Mar 1752 and has a child 16 Jan 1853 (sired Mar 1852) then there is a 4 3/4 year gap until 28 Oct 1857 (sired Jan 1857) when his next child is born.
In 1851, JC-179842 is age 21 learning the tailor trade in Market Row of Marylebone. This is the heart of the Tailor Guild. FYI - In 1861, he is listed as a game keeper which he continues for many years. This means he likely failed his tailoring career for some reason by say 1857.
He is not listed on the London Apprenticeship Abstracts, 1442-1850 (Findmypast.co.uk). This means he was still new to tailoring in 1851. He was not part of the "sweated trade" but a tailor who served an apprenticeship.
"In 1841 tailoring was London’s fourth commonest occupation, after domestic service, labouring and boot-and shoe-making, and after them came milliners and dressmakers then commercial clerks." ... "The higher class workers were employed as bespoke tailors and were more likely to have served a formal apprenticeship ..."

Back to say 1853 to the end of 1856 - where was JC-179842? An apprentice tailor served from 3 to 4 years then worked a journeyman tailor before becoming a master tailor. Let us use late 1850 to start his trade then by late 1853/1854 he has finished and now is paid full wages as a tailor. Since his apprenticeship was in London, he his then likely still there working for a master tailor.
Journeyman Tailor John C-179842 was still (highly probable) in Marylebone during the critical siring months of Feb 1854 and May 1855. Any evidence he is still there? YES! See the legal notice of a hearing between John Carpenter & Sarah Davis dated 22 Jun 1854 (RIN 179835 Sarah Davis vs John Carpenter.jpg attached). There within is the proof of a connection between Sarah Davis and John Carpenter. Why the hearing? We know that she was 4 months pregnant with Julia Carpenter Davis-179841.
If I find more on them during the search period of 1853-1856, I will let you know.

RECAP:
Sarah Davies aka Sarah Davis - nee Walker.
NAME:
Initial name given is Sarah Davies. This apparently was a married name. Her father was William Walker per her 1853 marriage record. This matches her 1829 birth. See A) below for details.
Apparently Sarah Davies nee Walker was later the widow of Phillip Davis. They were cited in the 1851 England census (See screenshot 43) as of 30 Mar 1851, but not formally married until 21 Aug 1853.
By June 1854 she is listed as a widow when she is cited in a legal case against a John Carpenter in June 1854. See RIN 179835 Sarah Davis ... attached. She is pregnant at this time and gives birth to a daughter Julia Carpenter Davis on 13 Dec 1854, but no father listed. All of these places involve Maryleborne.
Sarah Davis moves from Marylebone to to the more upper end and business centered Fleet Street area around 4 Salisbury Court by the early 1855. This per her daughter's 11 Mar 1855 baptism record.
Later she has John Carpenter Davis on 3/4 Mar 1856. No father again is listed as father.
The relationship is over by Jan 1856 when John Carpenter sires a child with his legal wife.
In time Sarah (nee Walker) Davis later remarries and has several more children. But I do not have that info cited.

John Carpenter
A John Carpenter (a tailor by trade) is cited in the 1851 England census in Maryleborne. He is likely the same John Carpenter cited in the 1854 legal case involving Sarah Davis a widow. See B) below for more on him.
In 1851, John Carpenter-179842 is age 21 learning the tailor trade in Market Row of Marylebone. This is the heart of the Tailor Guild.
He is not listed on the London Apprenticeship Abstracts, 1442-1850 (Findmypast.co.uk). This means he was still new to tailoring in 1851. He
was not part of the "sweated trade" but a tailor who served an apprenticeship.
To be clear - about your John? Carpenter-179839 (father of JCD-179834 b. 4 Mar 1856 Kentish Town) is likely John Carpenter-179842.
We have a John Carpenter in 1851 living in Marylebone, very close to Sarah Davies the future mother of JCD-179834 is in 1851 with Phillip Davis. Julia Carpenter Davis is born 13 Dec 1854 Marylebone, London, Middlesex, England. In time and place Maryleborne!
But we have a twist. He gets married.
JC-179842 married in Jan-Mar 1752 and has a child baptized 16 Jan 1853 (sired Mar 1852) then there is a 4 3/4 year gap until 28 Oct 1857 (sired Jan 1857) when his next child is born.
Journeyman Tailor John C-179842 was (highly probable) in or near Marylebone during the critical siring time with his consort Sarah Davis about the months of Feb 1854 and May 1855 for her children JCD & JCD respectively.
Any evidence he is still there? YES!
There is a legal notice of a hearing between John Carpenter & Sarah Davis dated 22 Jun 1854 (RIN 179835 ... attached). There within is the proof of a connection between a Sarah Davis and John Carpenter. Why the hearing? We know that she was 4 months pregnant with Julia Carpenter Davis-179841.
We know the relationship continued. After the 26 July 1854 hearing, Sarah Davis moves to 4 Salisbury Court by the time of her daughter's 11 Mar 1855 baptism. Then just two months after that, or about May 1855, she becomes pregnant with a male child later named John Carpenter Davis born 3/4 Mar 1856.
His (JCD) male descendants has a Carpenter (Group 15) genetic profile. Since Y-DNA is passed down the generations virtually unchanged, this means that JCD was highly likely sired by the John Carpenter who consorted with Sarah Davis nee Walker.
The relationship is over sometime in 1856. One can probably claim that he was unable to sustain two families as a journeyman tailor. His house of cards fell apart and he leaves Sarah Davis. He leaves London and goes back to Calne.
How do we know this? Because John Carpenter sires a child with his legal wife Eliza Manners in Jan 1857 and that child Joseph is baptized 28 Oct 1857.
This means he likely failed his tailoring journeyman career before fleeing London sometime in 1856. In the 1861 and 1871 England Census, his occupation is listed as a gamekeeper. He dies about Dec 1877 in or near Calne, Wiltshire, England.
His first legal son was Joseph (1853) named after his father. He has Julia (1854) & John (1856) with his consort Sarah (nee Walker) Davis. Then he has Simeon (1857), William George (1860), Albert (1863), Emily (1866) and likely Fanny (abt 1874) with his wife Eliza Manners. No other child is named Sarah (his mother's name) and there is no other John or Julia to replace his consort's children names.
My further research on the John Carpenter ancestral line that is likely related to your John Carpenter Davis has ground to a halt. John Carpenter's birth was at Cherhill, which is about 29-30 miles from Horningsham with Warminister in between. But, so far no genealogical connection found with the rest of Group 15. The efforts to find a willing male Carpenter descendant has also failed despite repeated contenders and closing attempts.
You wrote:
Re the forename John...my grandfather twice gave his father’s name as John Davis...once when he was married to Florence Holloway and at the report in the NZ newspaper of their golden wedding in 1931 “only son of Mr and Mrs John Davis of Hammersmith” I’ve thought that in wanting to hide his illegitimate birth he wouldn’t want to make more changes than necessary and that his birth father, Mr Carpenter, was a John.
Conclusion:
John Carpenter sired two children with Sarah Davis nee Walker. This all seems to fit, but ... would more than half of the people agree? If it is a reasonable belief, then this may be the best we can find. Personally I find it rather remarkable that the tidbits found seem to match up so well.  JRC 16 May 2016

Hi John
Thanks for the email and the attachment...is this a new lead or a diversion/coincidence?
On the one hand my story seems coherent. I’m definitely a Carpenter (Y-DNA), Sarah Davies had two children presumably by a Mr Carpenter giving them a Carpenter middle name and then has five children by Mr Gale (later marrying him) and giving them a Gale middle name.
I had a note in my ‘research notebook’ in London 1999 of a John Davis son of John Carpenter Davies and Elizabeth in St Bride Fleet St in 1813 but haven’t taken it any further
Anyway here’s Julia’s registration ..I’ll send John’s next...and keep puzzling!

Hi John,
If you have had a chance to look at the Dropbox, you will see that I gave you access to 8 digital files. The 2 large Tiff files are of the 2 sides of a medalion I bought at the Longleat Manor house in Wiltshire County England, home of the Maquis of Bath. My Carpenter Ancestor lived and worked on the estate from the 1500s on. Some left in the 1800s and 1900s to become coal miners in Wales.
The main character in photos CFP0001 and CFP0029 is Sanuel E (Edward?) Carpenter, born 19 February 1828 in Hill Deverill, Wiltshire, England. Samuel was my great-great grandfather. In one of the photo is his youngest son George Carpenter born 29 April 1861. George was my great grandfather. George and his oldest brother Albert left England for Canada some time in the 1870s for Canada. They both settled near Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, where they remained the rest of their lives.
The second photo of Samuel contains Samuel's youngest daughter Selina and Samuels second wife Mary Ball. Selina was born 12 September 1865. Selins was 4 and a half years younger than George, I suspect that these two photos were taken the same day about 1876 when George was about 15 abd Selma was 10 .Do you have a better guess?
The older gentleman in photo BCC-217 is George Carpenter taken in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada with his wife Alice, his only daughter Winifred, and his only two grandsons. The grandsons, Bert Courtney Carpenter and William Bradford Carpenter were the sons of Bryer Curtise Carpenter, my father. My father's first wife, Dororhy Birt, died in 1932 or 1933 and the boys were sent east to live with tier grand parents
Regards,
George Carpenter
