OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Feb. 1985.   Clellen K. Burt, 70, of 86 E. Grand Circle, died Wednesday in Leila Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Sherman and lived most of his life in Battle Creek.  He retired in 1972 from Post Division of General Foods Corp., where he had worked 27 years.  He was a member of Eagles Lodge 299. Surviving are his wife, the former Alice Rose; sons, Gary Burt, Richard Burt and James Burt, all of Battle Creek; stepsons, Stewart Price and Gary Price,  both of Battle Creek; brothers, Guy Burt, Robert Burt, Bill Burt and Jack Burt, all of Battle Creek; sisters, Carmen Clemens and Iva Eakins, both of Battle Creek and eight grandchildren.  Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Royal Funeral Home.  Burial in Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, Battle Creek.

Burnham St., died Saturday at his home after a lengthy illness.  He was born in Sherman and moved to Battle Creek as a child.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.  He worked at Clemens Delivery Service for several years and then bought the business in the late 1950's and renamed it Burt's Delivery Service.  Since 1966, he had worked as a custodian for the Springfield School District, retiring because of ill health in 1981. He was a member of the AFL-CIO Local 547. Surviving are his wife, the former Betty Beebe; a daughter, Mrs. David (Ramona) Bouffard of Battle Creek; stepdaughters, Edith Dyer of Mount Clemens and Mrs. Thomas (JoAnn) Craft of Jakcson; stepsons, Jack Fodor of Jackson, Dennis Burt of Battle Creek, Michael Burt of San Diego, and Stanley and Richard Fodor, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Bill, Guy, Garnett, Clellan, Bob and Jack Burt, all of Battle Creek; and sisters, Mrs. Marvin (Iva) Eakins and Carmen Clemens, both of Battle Creek.  Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Royal Funeral Home.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Wednesday, Dec. 19, 1984, p. 2B. Betty J. Burt, 60, of 19 E. Burnham St., died Monday in Community Hospital after a long illness.  She was born in Jackson and moved to Battle Creek 30 years ago.  She was employed as a waitress for many years before ill health forced her retirement.  Her husband, George E. Burt, died in 1983.  Surviving are a daughter, Joan Craft of Albion; sons, Stanley A., Richard A., and James M. Fodor, all of Ontario, Calif., John S. Fodor Jr. of Concord, and Denis A. Fodor of Battle Creek; and 12 grandchildren.  Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Albion Chapel, Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels.  I believe this might be a second marriage for Betty since her children's names are "Fodor."

Burt, 63 of 12200 6-Mile Road died Monday morning, July 25, at home after a lengthy illness.  He was born in Battle Creek and was a lifelong resident.  He had been employed by the Clemens Delivery Service, Burt's Delivery Service and retired in 1980 from Harper Creek Public Schools.  Surviving are his wife, the former Gaynell Allred; daughters, Sue Baker, Sheryl Smith and Tina Morris of Battle Creek; a son, Billy Burt of Battle Creek; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Carmen Clemens and Ivabelle Eakins of Battle Creek; and brothers, Guy Burt of Battle Creek, Jack Burt of Athens and Bob Burt of Sturgis.  Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Royal Funeral Home.  Memorial donations may go to the North Avenue Church of God.  Burial in Memorial Park Cem..

We are not sure of Cleon's marriage to Ada Budd.  Information on her was taken from marriage license of Duane L. Sult dated 14 Nov 1954 which stated his mother was Ada Budd and his father was Cleon Sult.

In 1955 Cleon was of Route 8, Battle Creek, according to his father's obituary.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Saturday, 15 April 1961.  Cleon L. Sult, 48, a 25-year employee as a pressman for the Carton and Container Division of the General Foods Corp., died early this morning at his residence, 133 S. 28th St.  Although he had suffered from a heart ailment for 18 months, he worked his regular shift yesterday and his death was unexpected.  He joined the company March 9, 1936.  Mr. Sult was born in Sherman, Mich., and came here as a child with his parents, Everett and Isabelle (Green) Sult.  He was married secondly here Dec. 24, 1955 to Mrs. Marie R. Bailey who survives.  Also surviving are a son by a previous marriage, Duane L. of 36 W. Pitman Ave.; two granddaughters; two sisters, Mrs. William (Evelyn) Hyde of Baltimore, MD, and Mrs. George (Letha) Lassese of Cheverly, Md.; a brother, Kenneth E. of Omaha, Neb.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Bill (Patricia) DeVoll of 59 S. Woodrow Ave., and a step-son, Theron Bailey of Columbus, Ohio.  Mr. Sult was president of the Post Sportsmen's Club and a member of the Post 25-Year Club, Moose Lodge No. 326 and the Legion of the Moose.  During World War II he saw foreign duty with the Maritime Service.


Ada Melissa Budd

In Aug 1932 Cleon Sult and Ada Budd, both of Bedford, were witnesses to the marriage of Joseph Wayne Green and Inez Willison.  Joseph and Cleon are cousins.

Not sure of Ada Budd's marriage to Cleon.  Information was taken from marriage license of Duane L. Sult dated 14 Nov 1954 - mother of groom: Ada Budd.

Ada Budd was my great aunt. Here is the information I have on them:

Duane Leroy Sult, born 11 June 1935, in Calhoun Co., Died: 08 February 1991, in Calhoun Co. Buried in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park South, 3941 S. Westnedge Ave. Kalamazoo, MI 49008.
Mark Sult, born 10 February 1938.
I am looking for official scanned birth and adoption documents and have contacted a person who has done an extensive Sult family tree. I cannot locate any information on him, as it may be sealed by the State of Michigan —I’m not sure. He was given up for adoption, probably as an infant. The remaining living relatives have no memories that he existed.
I suspect the process of putting him up was one reason why Cleon divorced Ada. The marriage in LaGrange, Indiana, and the Battle Creek, MI, divorce decree are on Ancestry.com .
As for Duane Sult, he was married and had three children. I do not feel right giving the children’s information without asking them first. I will ask in August if they would like information about your tree and show them where they can access what you’ve put on the Internet.

Sult and Son Heating  in Battle Creek and owned and operated The Hitching Post restaurant in Hallam, NE.  He also was employed by Climax Lumber.   He married Marjorie Horst on Dec. 20, 1962.  She survives.  Also surviving are sons, Kenneth M. Sult of Union City, Gerald L. Sult of East Leroy and Jeffrey Dayton (is this a step-son?) of Kansas City, KS; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evely Hyde of Cattonsville, MD.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Cleon Sult; and a sister, Letha Lassie. In 1946 Mrs. J. (Pearl) Lawder was of Lansing, Michigan, according to her father's obituary.  In 1961 Pearl was of Pensacola, FL according to her mother's obituary.  In February 1997 Elma Carpenter spoke with Pearl's sister, Ella Haven, age 97, of Battle Creek.  Ella furnished her sister's date of birth and children's names and their spouses.  Ella said her sister, Pearl, was deceased.

Clyde Lawder, 83, of 1020 Pickens Ave., died Sunday morning at West Florida Hospital.  Rev. Lawder, a native of Hillsdale, Kansas, had resided in Pensacola since 1957. Over a 45-year period he served as minister to six congregations.  He pastored two churches in Lansing, Michigan, and retired in 1965 from the First Christian Church of Pensacola.  He was named Minister Emeritus from the First Christian Church of Pensacola.  Survivors include his wife, Pearl Lawder of Pensacola; four daughters, Wilma Weaver of Rockford, Michigan, Leona Morris of Panama City, Florida, Eulalie C. In 1946 Mrs. Carl Harleston was of East Leroy according to her father's obituary.  In 1961  Vera Harleston was of East Leroy according to her mother's obituary.

She had been ill since July.  She was born in Athens and resided in the Athens, East Leroy and Battle Creek areas all her life.  She was a member of Sonoma United Methodist Church and a birthday club in the church.  Her husband, Carl W. Harleston, died in 1967.  She is survived by a son, Roy J. Harleston of 3625 Strickland Road; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Earl Swartz of East Leroy; and sisters, Ella Haven and Marian Eckler, both of Battle Creek.  Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Sonoma United Methodist Church.  Memorial donations may be made to the parsonage building fund at the church.  Arrangements are by Richard A. Marion's date and place of birth received February 1998 from Marion's sister, Ella Haven, age 97, of Battle Creek.  Ella said Marion is in a nursing home.


Clarence L. Eckler

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, 20 Jun 1995, p 2A.  Clarence L. Eckler, 91, of Battle Creek died Saturday, June 17, 1995, in Evergreen Manor after a long illness. Born May 13, 1904 in Battle Creek to Fred and Alta (Hicks) Eckler, he was a lifelong resident of the Battle Creek and East Leroy areas.  Mr. Eckler was employed for 20 years at Oliver Corporation.  He also was employed at Kimball Nursing Home.  He attended the Sonoma United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed reading and was an avid Detroit Tigers baseball fan.  He married Marion M. Swartz on Aug. 29, 1927 in South Bend, Ind.  She survives. Also surviving are sons, Delmer C. Eckler of Houston and Donald K. Eckler of Battle Creek; daughters, Gloria A. Burrows of Delton, Lois D. Stock of Reno, Nev., and Darlene J. Nimphie of Lambertville; 12 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.  Services will be held later in Burr Oak Cem., Athens.  Arrangements by Richard A. Henry Funeral Home.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Wednesday, June 14, 1989, p4A. East Leroy - Marion L. (Hamilton) Swartz, 70, of 10110 4-Mile Road, died Tuesday, June 13, at home.  She had been ill since December.  She was born in Battle Creek and was a 1936 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School.  She was a 1938 graduate of the old County Normal School, Marshall.  She taught in rural schools in Eaton Rapids and substitute taught in what is now the Harper Creek School District.  She was a member of Sonoma United Methodist Church for over 40 years and taught Sunday School there over 35 years.  She was a member of the Wrong Way Tha Square Dance Club and Cheerful Camper Club.  Surviving are her husband of nearly 50 years, Earl L. Swartz; a son, Elton E. Swartz of Battle Creek; a daughter, Phyllis Lutz of Battle Creek; three grandchildren; sisters, Donna Keisiling of Ceresco and Frances Smith of Battle Creek; and a brother, Dale Hamilton of Lake Orion.  Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Shaw-Estes Funeral Home.  Memorial donations may go to Sonoma United Methodist Church or Good Samaritan Hospice Care.  Burial in Morgan Cem., Battle Creek.

Elma Carpenter had a conversation in February 1998 with Joyce's cousin, Ella Haven, age 97, of Battle Creek.  She gave us the names of Joyce's spouses and children.  Ella also gave us Joyce's date of birth.
