Death: 21 Oct 1900 (aged 56)
Burial: Thrailkill Cemetery, Swayzee, Grant County, Indiana, USA
Plot: Sec B
Memorial #: 44094170
Bio: Caleb Winfield Peters was born March 3, 1944, died Oct 21, 1900.  Aged 56 years, 4 months and 18 days.  During his boyhood days, he was early put to clearing the heavy forests that covered the land entered by his father by the government, always being a dutiful son to his parents, and early learning that patriotism was the sterling quality of any man, when his country was plunged into war he thought duty invited him to the front, so in the summer of 1862 amid the cheers of patriotism of men and the tears of mother and sisters he obeyed the bugle call and tramped to the front encouraged by martial music and the sight of the old flag so dear to every old patriot.  When done fighting the battle of his country he came home and began anew the battles of life so recently ended.  He was married to Minerva Carpenter April 6, 1871.To that union were born two boys and two girls, one of the girls having passed on before at the age of about five years, leaving the present family consisting of a married daughter Ella living in Pittsburg, Pa., and Frank and Ellsworth and the wife and mother of Swayzee.  To his family he was always a ray of light, and to this neighbors and friends was always ready to enjoy the social side of any question. When the end was evident he realized duty again and was baptized and became a member of the Methodist church and died in the triumph of a living faith in Christ Jesus. The funeral services were held yesterday, at the Christian Church, Rev. Louis Reeves, officiating.  The remains were laid to rest in the IOOF cemetery

Birth: 4 Mar 1862 West Hallock, Peoria County, Illinois, USA
Death: 18 Jan 1915 (aged 52) Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA
Burial: Milton Cemetery, Milton, Rock County, Wisconsin, USA
Memorial #: 84428980
Bio: "The Sabbath Recorder", Vol 78, No 6, p 190, Feb. 8, 1915.   Haldane Cochran Saunders, the youngest son of Dea. and Mrs. Truman Saunders, was born in West Hallock, Ill., March 4, 1862, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William P. Myers, in Chicago, January 18, 1915.  Death came suddenly from heart failure while he sat at the breakfast table.   Mr. Saunders spent the year 1879-1880 in Kentucky State College at Lexington.  The following fall he entered Milton College, where he remained two or three years, but on account of poor health he gave up further study.  He had lived intermittently in Milton and vicinity for thirty years, but his permanent home of late had been in Alabama.  For several years he was engaged in the hardware business at Milton.   He was married to Miss Charlotte Davy, of Milton, on Mar. 25, 1884.  To them were born two children - Charlotte and Haldane. The latter died at the age of five years.  Mrs. Saunders died in December, 1895.   The body was brought to Milton for burial, and funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home of his sister, Mrs. A. R. Crandall, conducted by Rev. Willard D. Burdick.     W. D. B.

George Carpenter
Birth: 1861
Sacramento
Sacramento County
California, USA
Death: Jun. 4, 1892
Emigrant Gap
Placer County
California, USA
From California. Died at the age of 30 years, 10 months, 4 days, of a gunshot wound.
San Francisco Call, Volume 72, Number 6, 6 June 1892:
"MURDER MOST FOUL. A Man Shot Down at Emigrant Gap for Not Paying His Debts.
Sacramento, June 5.— A special to the Record-Union from Emigrant Gap gives the details of the murder of George Carpenter at that place Saturday. From all that can be learned it was a most cold-blooded murder, and the supposed murderer, Thomas Anderson, has fled.
Several months ago while the two were in San Francisco Carpenter borrowed $60 from Anderson, and since then the latter has frequently dunned him for it, but Carpenter always declared that he was hard up. The day before the killing Anderson made another demand for the money, but met with no better success than before. He became quite angry and in the presence of several people around town threatened Carpenter. To a man named Chian he said that he would have that money or stretch hemp for it.
On Saturday morning Carpenter opened his saloon at 6 o'clock, and in half an hour the neighbors heard a shot. Carpenter was found dead in the rear room of the saloon. The murderer had fired a heavy charge of buckshot through the glass door of the saloon and the whole had entered Carpenter's left side, penetrating the heart and lung, breaking several ribs and tearing away the muscles of the left arm.
Sheriff Conroy of Placer and a posse are scouring the country for Anderson, and they believe they will catch him before long.
The murdered man was born in Sacramento and is well known here. His father is a well-to-do cattleman and a farmer of Folsom. His mother, sister and brother are also at the latter place. He was 30 years of age.
The inquest was held and the jury found that he came to his death at the hands of some one unknown to the jury."

COMMENT:
It is assumed that Emory and Woodward  Township Cemteries are the same, One just being an older name. The marker for Jessie B. (in WTC) is a small fragment and free standing stone. This means it is NOT anchored to the ground and may be more of a memorial marker.

CHAPTER LII.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES.
BOROUGH OF JERSEY SHORE, AND PORTER, WATSON, MIFFLIN (INCLUDING SALLADASBURG), AND PIATT TOWNSHIPS.

JESSE B. CARPENTER, second son of John and Mary Carpenter, was born October 10, 1813, in Woodward township, Lycoming county. He was reared upon the old homestead, and received such an education as the common schools of that period afforded. After he grew to manhood he and his brother secured the patent for the tract entered by his grandfather, a portion of which is still owned by members of the family. In 1866 he purchased his present home of 125 acres in Piatt township, where he has since resided. Mr. Carpenter was married May 20, 1847, to Phebe Ann, daughter of Joseph and Hannah Carpenter of Eldred township. Four children are the fruits of this union: Joseph R.; William B., deceased; John W., and Asher M. Mr. Carpenter is one of the leading farmers of his township, and is a trustee and steward of the Methodist Episcopal church of his neighborhood. Throughout his life-long residence in Lycoming county he has been recognized as an industrious and honorable citizen, a man whose character is above reproach, and whose success has been attained by a conscientious performance of duty. He is a kind and charit-able neighbor, and ever ready to help the needy and afflicted. Politically, he has always been a stanch Democrat, and is also a firm advocate of the temperance cause. Both he and wife are now spending their declining years in the mutual love and respect of home and family, and in the enjoyment of the comforts which their industrious and economical habits have won.
