NEWSPAPER ARTICLE.  November 30, 1965, Policeman Gets 1st Deer in 10 Years.  Battle Creek Police Patrolman Arthur Carpenter spent five days this week in Northern Michigan hunting for his deer - the tenth year for him.  He returned empty-handed for the tenth year.  The other day he went hunting along M-66, just north of Battle Creek.  He spotted a three-point buck and brought him down.  "My first deer in 10 years," he kept repeating.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE.  Youth Points Gun at Officer.  A 16-year-ol boy who pointed a loaded shotgun at a Battle Creek policeman who was taking away his "go-cart" was arrested Sunday afternoon and taken to the juvenile home in Marshall to await a hearing in Probate Count this morning.  The boy, who has frequently been in trouble with police, may be waived from Probate Court jurisdiction and tried as an adult, possibly on a charge of felonious assult, police said.  Patrolman Arthur Carpenter observed the boy driving the vehicle on Wagner Drive shortly before 2 p.m. and followed him up to his home.  After telling the boy that he was impounding the cart, the boy said he would stop him with a shotgun.  As the patroman was loading the cart into the police car, the boy came to the back porch of his home with the gun and pointed it at the patrolman.  Patrolman Carpenter ducked beside the police car and radioed for assistance.  Meanwhile, the boy's mother took the shotgun from him.  Other police officers arrived and the boy was taken into custody, protesting however that police were acting without a warrant.

ANNIVERSARY.  Union City Register-Tribune, August 1982.  Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Carpenter celebrate 25th anniversary.  Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Carpenter of Battle Creek hosted a dinner at the Buckingham Inn last Wednesday in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary.  Guests attended from Union City, Kalamazoo, Schoolcraft, Athens and Battle Creek.  Attending from Union City were Mrs. Carpenter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ratzow, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Zarmstorf and Mr. and Mrs. Terry MacDonald.  Arthur Carpenter and Elma Wisnieski were married August 25, 1957, in the First Congregational Church, Union City, and lived on North Broadway until 1963 at which time they moved to Battle Creek.  Art is a 21-year employee of the Battle Creek Police Department and Elma is employed by the Kellogg Company.  They have two children, Dean, an electrician, and Marty, a student at Ferris State College.

W. Capital Ave.  Two men escaped with up to $500,000 according to an unconfirmed report. . . Thursday, Dec. 10, 1987 - Clues scarce in $500,000 robbery . . .Friday, Dec 11, 1987 - Robbers, still at large, took more than $1 million.  Coins, some cash left behind; audit could take two weeks . ..May 16, 1988 FBI hunts for link to heist.  'Most people were surprised.'  Marshall - The FBI interviewed people here and in Battle Creek Monday in connection with last December's $1 million-plus armored van robbery.  Meanwhile, $237,000 in cash and financial records seized Thursday from a Marshall Twp. gun shop were being checked by federal authorities for fingerprints to determine if they are linked to the robbery in Battle Creek - one of the largest ever for this area.  If a link is found, the evidence could be presented to a grand jury, said FBI spokesman Robert DuHadway . . .Saturday, January 13, 1990 Spree leads to jail.  Three sentenced for $1 million heist.  Lansing - A trail of conspicious spending ended in U. S. District Court on Friday for Jacqueline and Jan Monette.  The Monettes of Marshall, along with Frank Engler of Battle Creek, were sentenced Friday by U. S. District Judge Robert Holmes Bell for their involvement in a staged armored van heist in Battle Creek and theft of more than $1 million in cash . . .Arthur worked extensively on this case with the FBI and Secret Service.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Thursday, June 30, 1994, p. 3A.  Battle Creek detective retiring after 34 years.  Detective Arthur Carpenter, 56, a Battle Creek police officer nearly 34 years, is retiring today.  Carpenter, who has worked for eight chiefs, began Dec. 6, 1960.  He was a dispatcher and then a patrol officer, including work as a motorcycle officer.  He was promoted in 1969 to investigator which became detective.  He has specialized in crimes against and by juveniles and later in areas of fraud and related crimes.  He has been active in the Police and Fire Pension Board, is a past president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 121 and was predident of the Michigan Association of Check Investigators.

(Ross) Carpenter.  He graduated from Union City High School in 1956, attended Kellogg Community College and Case Western Reserve University and attended U. S. Secret Service Questioned Document Classes.  He retired as a detective on July 1, 1994, after 33 years with the Battle Creek Police Department.  He then worked part-time as a driver for Henkel Dodge.  He married Elma E. Wisnieski on Aug. 25, 1957, in Union City.  She survives.  Also surviving are sons, C. Dean Carpenter of Athens and Martin l. Carpenter of Wyoming; two grandsons; mother and stepfather, Janet and Gail Dipert of Wellston; and sisters, Carla D. Lewis of Nashville, Janice A. Mangold of Athens, and Nancy L. Robinson of Ohio. Arthur had a Police Honor Guard at his funeral and the procession was escorted from Battle Creek to Union City by two police motorcycles and police cruisers.

Michigan Society, Sons of the American Revolution:  In Memory.  Compatriot Arthur C. Carpenter of the Sauk Trail Chapter passed away on Dec 8, 1999. Arthur joined SAR in 1994.  Our sincere condolences to his wife Elma, to family and friend.

Cecil Ray Salyer

OBITUARY.  Cycle mishap kills Burlington man.  The death Sunday night of a Burlington man raised Michigan's traffic death toll for the Fourth of July holiday weekend to 10.  The victim, Cecil Ray Salyer, 30, of Route 1, Burlington, was found dead about 8 a.m. Monday by an unidentified citizen along 11-Mile Road near F Drive S. State police at the Battle Creek Post said Salyer was killed between 4 and 11 p.m. Sunday when he apparently lost control of his motorcycle and ran off the road.  Salyer reportedly never showed up for work Sunday night at Eaton Manufacturing , Marshall, where he had worked for several years.  Police said reports on the accident were incomplete but said they believed an autopsy would be ordered.  Sate police still had failed to identify late monday the third victim of two-car, head-on collision on "Deadman's Curve" on U. S. 12 in Hillsdale county Monday . . .Funeral services for Cecil Salyer will be held at 1:30 p.m.  Thursday at the Spencer Funeral Home in Athens.  Salyer was born in Fostoria, Ohio.  He is survived by a son, Ricky and a daughter Rhonda, both of Athens, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chalmer (Grace Brown) Salyer of route 1, Burlington; sisters, Mrs. Sam (Dora) Vantrease of Athens and Mrs. Gale (Dorothy) Richardson of Marshall; brothers, Charles of Burlington.  Chester of Union City, Clarence of 41 S. 31st St., Carl of Marshall, Chalmer Jr. of 294 S. Harold Arthur Reynolds

Harold was injuried in a racing accident in May 1983 and was in a coma until death.  There was a divorce in 1985 or 86, but due to these unusual circumstances.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Wednesday, July 6, 1988, p. 4A.  Harold Arthur Reynolds.  Former race car driver dies of injuries.  Athens - Harold Arthur Reynolds, 47, of 3160 2-Mile Road died Tuesday, July 5, at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility after a lengthy illness.  He suffered from injuries as a result of a race car accident at the little 500 Race at Anderson (Ind.) Speedway on May 28, 1983.  He was born in Cressey and he moved to the area several years ago, graduating from Athens High School in 1960.  In high school, he was an outstanding track runner and football player.  He was an avid race car driver, beginning at the age of 16 and winning many awards throughout the tri-state area.  In addition to farming, he and his father owned and operated Reynolds Auto Parts from 1961-1983.  He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.  Surviving are three sons, Scott Reynolds of Kenner, LA, Mark Reynolds of Athens and Timothy Reynolds of Athens; a stepson, Rick Salyer of Athens; a step-daughter, Rhonda Dunn of Battle Creek; his parents, Murle and Dolly Reynolds of Athens; a brother, Richard lee Reynolds of Athens, and sisters, Frances Burgett of Sherwood and Sandy Powell of Union City.  Services will be at 10 a.m.  Friday at Spencer Funeral Home, Athens.  Memorial donations may be made to Athens High School Athletic Association.

Harold was cremated.  His son, Scott, has the cremains the last we knew.
