Annie Ann Carpenter b. 4-24-1848 d. 11-1-1929, buried Carpenter Cemetery, Jackson County, Florida, married 13 Dec 1866 to Archibald R Hamilton b. 10-6-1842 d. 3-23-1890, PVT 4th FL INF CSA, buried Cow Pen Pond Cemetery, Jackson County, Florida.

BIRTH:
About 22 Mar 1846, this is based on date calculation from Death info.
In the 1880 US Census - she is age 26 (b. abt 1854) and lists her father and mother born in NC.  Is it possible we had a daughter then a daughter in law with the name Ann confused?  Note death record that indicates she is "widowed." Was this possible second Ann (ie possible daughter in law) the former wife of Henry who had a daughter named Sally together???

Annie Ann Carpenter 24 April 1848 - 1 November 1929
By Wayne N Carpenter wnc1933@email.msn.com June 2000

Ann was a tall slender woman with hair of light brown. She wore her hair long and balled up. She wore eyeglasses. Being the daughter of a pioneer family they raised what they eat, had large herds of sheep and made their own materials. Ann lived on the homeplace and when she was the last one living there she started renting the land.
She was a friendly Christian woman and was a member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church. At one service they had she gave $10.00 for a new Church Fund. Back in horse and buggy days that was a lot of money. Her ex husband was a member of the building committee.

Ann Carpenter was a member of the Grand Ridge Adrian Chapter # 25 Eastern Star Order.

On 13 December 1866 Ann Carpenter married Archibald R. Hamilton. On 3 January 1868 Ann gave birth to a daughter Sallie Hamilton. Then sometime between birth of this child and 1870 Ann divorced Archibald.

On 8 June 1888, Sallie Hamilton married Charles Wilton Lanier, who was from Sneads, Florida. Then on 13 November 1889, Sallie Hamilton Lanier gave birth to a daughter, Sallie Merle Lanier. Two weeks after giving birth Sallie died. The child's father, Charles Lanier gave the child to her grandmother Ann Carpenter Hamilton to raise. Sallie Merle never did live with her daddy.

On 11 October 1896, Charles W. Lanier married again to Ada Frances McDaniel.
Their children were: Tommy Jefferson Lanier, b. 28 Oct 1897, d. 11 Apr 1958 W. C. Lanier, b. 9 May 1899, d. 23 Aug 1901 Virdie Lanier, b. 15 Mar 1902, d. 18 Apr 1956 Wilton Lanier, b. 19 Dec 1903, d. 24 May 1905 b. 18 Sep 1905 Leonard Charles (Dick) Lanier, b. 12 Oct 1906, d. 16 Sep 1964 Cecil Lanier, b. 16 Oct 1908, d. 18 May 1984 Charles Wilton Lanier Jr., b. 9 Feb 1911

All are buried at Dykes Cemetery except for Charles, Jr., who is still living on the Lanier property, River Road, Sneads.
Charles, Sr., died 11 Mar 1912. He worked in Sneads and had come home for lunch. After lunch he stepped down to the yard on his way back to work. He stopped at the edge of the porch and motioned for C.W. Jr., to come to him. C.W. Jr., was a year old and going to his daddy were the were the first steps he had ever made. On C.W. way back to work a dog run out and spooked the horse causing a run away. C.W. was pulling on the reins trying to get the horse under control. While doing this he was bracing his feet on the buggy floor. He was pressing so hard on the buggy floor till the floor tore loose and he fell through and was killed.

Ada, C.W. Sr., wife was a good woman and a hard working wife and mother.

According to C.W. Jr., after his dad was killed Uncle Bossie McDaniel and his brother Tom kind of took the family under wing like a mother hen does her chickens and looked after them.

On 22 April 1906, Sallie Merle Lanier, daughter of C.W. Lanier Sr. and granddaughter of Ann Carpenter, married Edward Berry (Boss) McDaniel. Sallie was a pretty woman with black hair. She had a talent for playing the organ. As a matter of curiosity it would be interesting to know who taught her and whether the organ was one Ann Carpenter brought or whether it had belonged to Ann's mother Isabella.

Boss farmed for a living. Boss and Sallie McDaniel children were: Ruth McDaniel Flossie Myrl McDaniel Chrystell Margarite McDaniel Edward Berry (E B) McDaniel, Jr. William Charles (Doc) McDaniel McDaniel Alpha Omega McDaniel Hubert Earl (Muggins) McDaniel
Buried at Cow Pen Cemetery, Dellwood Archibald R. Hamilton, b. 6 Oct 1842, d. 23 Mar 1890
Buried at Dykes Cemetery, Sneads Charles Wilton Lanier, b. 26 Dec 1866, d. 11 Mar 1912 Sallie Hamilton Lanier, b. 3 Jan 1868, d. 27 Nov 1889 Ada Frances McDaniel, b. 22 May 1875, d. 18 Jan 1947 Sallie Merle Lanier McDaniel, b. 13 Nov 1899, d. 1 Jan 1974 Edward Berry (Boss) McDaniel, b. 5 Aug 1881, d. 13 Aug 1960

Archibald R. Hamilton

CIVIL WAR Veteran:  PVT 4th FL INF CSA, buried Cow Pen Pond Cemetery, Jackson County, Florida.
Archibald R Hamilton, husband of Annie Ann Carpenter, enilisted 9-16-1861 at Apalachicola in 4th FL INF. Don't remember what battle he was in but when it was over only 18 men from the 4th were alive. The 1st FL INF had had very few men left alive so the 1st and the 4th were made one unit. He was slightly wounded in the hip 1-2-1863 at Murfreesboro. He was captured 11-25-1863 at Missionary Ridge and sent to Rock Island Prison. He enlisted in the US Army for frontier service 10-31-1864 and discharged 1865. (These soldiers were called galvanized solders.) Archibald R Hamilton and Annie Ann Carpenter divorced and he remarried two more times. Archibald was a member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church till he asked to be dismissed.

370. Abner McNair Carpenter

1800 Census of Augusta, Ontario, NY. Book by Ralph Wood, Alphabetized. Abner is listed as under 5 (Abner b. 1799) and parent Robert Carpenter ashead of the household in the 16-26 age range, and mother (Phebe) also in the 16-26 range.

1810 U. S. Census of Middlesex, Ontario, NY (Augusta had been renamed Middlesex, and also was Yates  in 1821). Film 081387, Salt Lake City Family History Library..  All children are in the home.  See father's documentation for details.

1820 U. S. Census, Bristol, Ontario, NY Film193717, SLC-FHLibrary. See father's documentation.

1830 U. S. Census, Bristol, Ontario, NY Film 017053, SLC-FHL  Abner is listed as head of the household with a wife "over 20 & under 30", and a son and a daughter both under 5. (They were daughter Phebe b.11 Aug 1823, later Mrs. John Welch, and son John McNair Carpenter b. 24 Aug 1828).  They had a daughter, Zulima b. 1826 who had died before this census.  A daughter Hannah was born after the census was taken. Hannah was b. 1 Sept 1830.

The family left NY before the the 1840  census, and went to St. Omar, Decatur, IN with the McNair relatives, and later to Northern Indiana where Sally McNair Finley, Rebecca's sister, lived.

1840 U. S. Census, Valpariso, Porter , IN, 2597, Part 7, Abner is head of the household with 2 sons under 5 (Benjamin Jonas b. 1836; his twin, Thomas Calvin died), and Abner Griffin b. 1838, 1 child age range  from 5 to 10 (Robert Calvin b. 1833, his twin, Daniel M. died), and 1 from10 -15 (John McNair Carpenter), and 2 girls, 1, 10-15 (Hannah b. 1830) and 1, 15-20 (Phebe b. 1823).  Abner is listed as from 40-60 and (wife Rebecca) female from 30-40.

Another daughter Margaret was b. 1840 (after the Census) Jane was b. 1843, and Rebecca M. in 1846 at which it is reported both the baby and Rebecca, her mother, died. Margaret and Jane, daughters of Abner and Rebecca, were raised by the McNair relatives in Willow Hill, Jasper, Illinois.

Letter from a descendant of Jane Carpenter Baulding, child of Abner Carpenter and Rebecca McNair Carpenter.) Miss Blance Cox of RR3 Champaign, Illinois 61820, letter  dated July 17, 1966.  "Yes, I understand my grandmother, and her sister Margaret were living in Indiana when their mother died.  In fact they were only 3 & 6 yrs old.  That was still their home at the death of their father three or four years later.  I found a note that says he was buried in Rolling Prairie Cem. near LaPorte, Indiana. . ."  This would be Abner Carpenter.

Lake , IN, First Marriage Records 1837-1850. F 532.L2, Page 164. SLC-FH Library Abner Carpenter and (second wife), Elizabeth Miller, license 19 June 1847, md. 24 June 1847 by Jno Ball, Justice of the Peace.

1850 Census of Lake , IN, Film 0442935, SLC-FHL  taken 17 Sept 1850.  Elizabeth Carpenter, age 43, is listed as head of the household, and her children (5) are all with last names of Miller, ages 7 to 16. Perhaps Abner died before this census, or was away from home.  Family tradition is that he was killed in a War.  We believe this was his son, Robert who was killed in Civil War.  Abner probably  died before this census as Jane and Margaret, Abner's two small children when Rebeccas died, are not with his second wife.

Abner is also reported buried north of Terre Haute, IN, but there is no marker. Eugene Carpenter, great great grandson of Abner, (through John M, Abner's son Thomas, and Thomas' son Perry Adam, Eugene's father), of Paris, IL  attempted to locate records as his sister Ethel Taylor remembered her grandfather Thomas Carpenter, saying that the Kennedy Cem., in Otter Township, Terre Haute, IN was where his (Thomas') grandfather was buried. This could be Abner Carpenter, but perhaps a grandfather on the other side of the family.   A trip was made in 1992, looking for the burial records of the above named Cem., but records for this cemetery could not be found. There were some that had been copied from readable tombstones earlier, but Abner's name was not among them. The  letter mentioned above, from Miss Cox (a descendant of Jane, Abner's daughter) in 1966, said she found a note saying he was buried in Rolling Prairie Cem., near LaPorte, Indiana.  He might have been buried in  Lake , Indiana as that is the area in which he had been living.  Lake and Porter Counties are next to each other.

A tintype picture of Abner and wife Rebecca was in the possession of Eugene's sister Ethel (Ethel died in Oct. 1994). Before her death, Ethel gave the tintype to her brother Eugene with instructions to mail the tintype to Terilee Carpenter Jensen, also a great-great-grandaughter, in appreciation of all the work she has done on these records.

Rebecca McNair

Abner and Rebecca were related.  Parents of Rebecca were John McNair Jr. and Hannah Allen, who was blind.  Hannah's father, John McNair Jr. was a half-brother to Rebecca's mother's, Phebe McNair's, father who was Robert McNair.

See father and husband's documentation in the Carpenter Record.

Newspaper Article in Bristol Ontario. NY Town Hall Scrapbook 66, Page 43. "A very enjoyable event occured at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. C. W. Simmons, Tuesday afternoon, the occasion being the birthday of Mrs. Simmon's mother, Mrs. E. Carpenter (Eleanor).  A number of friends were present, among whom were Mrs. E. Carpenter age 73, Mrs. Sardis Simmons, age 71, Mrs. (Sally) Kaufman age 83, and Mrs. W. (Rowena?)Pierce age 63. The old ladies especially enjoyed the occasion immensely, and we can vouch for their entertainment as we all know Mrs. Simmon's pleasant and cordial manner of entertaining her friends." Article about 1885.

Newspaper death notice  in a scrapbook at Bristol, Ontario, NY Town Hall, Book 66, page 123, " KAUFMAN, At Boswell's Corners, South Bristol, April 25, 1888, Sally Kaufman, widow of William Kaufman, aged 86 yrs. and 7 months."

In 1995 an attempt was made by Donna Hellewell of Aptos, California, Elma Carpenter of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Helen Fox of Canandaigua, New York  to visit the Wilder Cem., in Ontario , NY but the brush and trees were so thick that we were unable to even get to the cemetery.  It is back of a nice farm house, but across a stream. The lady who lived in the house said she knew the Cem. was there, but we could not find a way into it.  This is where Sally and her husband, William Kaufman, is burried. The Wilder Cem. is South of  Bristol, on the way to Naples, Ontario, NY.  It is on the left side of the road.  Later, Helen Fox, of Canandaigua, NY was able to get into the Cem. and take photographs of their headstones. The following paragraph seemed appropriate here.

GONE! FORGOTTEN?  The tombstone [picture] at the left is of the stone of Gamaliel Wilder, pioneer settler of Bristol and South Bristol and a soldier of the Revolution.  The photograph shown was taken by former County Historian, Clyde Maffin, in 1968.  Recently, the Historian's Office received several requests for information on the Wilders.  Those requests prompted a visit to Wilder Cem., off Route 64 almost opposite Bristol Mountain.  Unfortunately, the stones of Wilder and many others have been obliterated by the effects of weather.  A common problem, this is the time of year when it is easy to spot cemeteries in need of work.  Many of our old burial grounds, including Wilder Cem., contain the graves of soldiers of the Revolution as well as other pioneers.  If anyone needs a list of county cemeteries (there are 177) it can be supplied by the County Historian.  Our old graveyards are a part of the heritage of "Old Ontario."  Why not take a look at the one nearest you?

From a letter written by Edith Downey of Clarkson, New York (from the Benjamin Carpenter line, third child of Robert and Phebe McNair Carpenter) to Nellie,(Nellie McNair Urtel, Caleb McNair's daughter) dated Jan. 28, 1966 (of Sarah's, [Sally's] line).  She was explaining first about Abner, Robert and Phebe's first child, and then about Sarah (Sally), Nellie's ancestor, Robert and Phebe's second child.   "Your grandmother, Jane Kaufman McNair was a granddaughter of Robert Carpenter and Phoebe McNair.  They had 13 children, the eldest was Abner who married Rebeca [spelled this way] McNair.   Your great grandmother Sarah (Sally) Carpenter Kaufman was their second child.  She married Wm. Kaufman and had 4 children and I believe your grandmother Jane was the oldest of these.  . ."   She went on to say, "The wedding vest was your great-grandfather's, Wm. Kaufman who came from England and became a citizen of the U. S. in Canandaigua.  Mary Pierce Stoll, (whom Jennie remembers so well) has the vest.  She lives directly across from the high school in Naples, New York.  She has a picture of Sally Carpenter Kaufman, her chair and a table, plus snuff box, pocket book of oil skin, and a lot of other things (family keepsakes).  If you are ever in Naples she would love to show them to you, I know.  She is a real nice person.  She remembers your father coming to see her grandmother Carrie Hewitt when she was a littl girl.  Carrie Hewitt and Jane Kaufman McNair were sisters.  I hope I've explained this so as not to confuse you.  I loved that wedding vest.  It is all hand embroidered.  She has been asked to give it to a museum or library (I don't know which) in Canandaigua.  She has one daughter, married to a veteren Perry."  This is in Wm. Kaufman's file also.

William Kaufman

South Bristol Town Records, NY 1838 - 1925.  Wm. Kaufman 1845, Path Master.

Ontario County Times, Canandaigua, NY, viewed at Ontario County Historical Society, Canandaigua, NY. Wednesday March 15, 1876.  The first of the article was about Isaac Wood, then about Mr. Kauffman. " Mr Kauffman was bout 77 years of age at the time of his decease.  He was brought into this town by his parents, who came hither from Canada when he was four years of age, since which time he has resided in or near the same spot, have a few years since purchased a house and lot near the old homestead and moved thereon, the old home reverting to his son.  I have been informed by one connected with the family that the mother purchased some of the old farm in an early day giving in exchange two geese for an acre of land.  Mr. Kauffman was an honest but shrewd dealer, and had long enjoyed the reputation of being in easy and independent circumstances.  He was social and neighborly in his deportment and was much esteemed as a citizen.  He will long be remembered and respected by his old acquaintances.  Benedict  S. Bristol, March 19, 1876"

He is buried in Wilder Cem., which if off Route 64, South Bristol Twp., Ontario, New York.  We attempted to get into the Cem. in 1995, but overgrowth prevented it.  However, after it was cleaned, Helen Fox, of Canandaigua sent us pictures of the tombstones.  See wife's record for other  data.

Marriage records Bristol, Ontario, NY   Father: Chester Gooding, Mother; Laura Booth  Marriage to Emile Kaufman and date we had matched, but not father and mother. (We mistakenly had Ephrim Gooding and Corintha Spencer, but this is wrong!)

C. A. Gooding age 55 & Emile Gooding age 54 are listed on the 1895 Calvin Carpenter Reunion in Athens, Michigan showing they were from Canandaigua, NY. (Calvin was a brother to Sally Carpenter, Emily's mother).

History of Ontario County, NY, Compiled by Lewis Cass Aldrich, Syracuse, NY 1893.  GOODING, Chester A., Bristol Center, was born in Canandaigua, February 22, 1840.  At the age of ten years he moved with his parents to Bloomfield where he lived until 1861, when in October (11, 1861) of that year he enlisted in Company B, 85th New York Volunteers, and served with them two years.  He had been with them a short time when he was attached with typhoid fever, and from that to rheumatism, until he was unfit for service, and was mustered out in August 1863.  (History of Ontario County, NY p. 213 it said he was discharged June 1963). He returned to Canandaigua and engaged in farming and has since followed that occupation.  On November 15, 1888 he married Emilie Kaufman of South Bristol.
