372. Benjamin Cranson Carpenter

1847  Benjamin Carpenter, Justice of the Peace , 1852, Path Master, from South Bristol Town Records, 1838 - 1925.

1850 U.S. Census, South Bristol, Ontario, NY.   Film 444287. Salt Lake Ccity Family History Library.   Household 169/174 Benjamin Carpenter age 46 male b. NY; Eleanor 38 female, b. NY; Helen 17 female; Nancy 15 female; Chas 10 male; Abel 7 male, all born NY. (Eleanor was Banjamin's second wife).  His first was Sylvia Allen, and Helen, Nancy and Charles are children of the first marriage.  Abel and Otisca were Benjamin and Eleanor's children.  They also adopted a girl named Mary.

1860 U.S. Census, South Bristol, Ontario, NY.  Film 803831, SLC FH Library.  Household 116/113 Benjamin Carpenter age 55, male b. NY; Eleanor 47 female, b. NY; Mary 15 female; Abel B. 14 male, and Asman Guptel 12 all b. NY.

Benjamin was one of the four children of Robert Carpenter and Phebe McNair that stayed in NY, and did not go to Michigan.

We visited the Cem., Baptist Hill or Evergreen Cem. in Sept 1995, where Benjamin is buried.  He was 68y4m16d.  His death date there was 1878, but given his age, he died in 1872.   He was 68y4m16d.

Ontario County Historical Society, Canandaigua, New York, viewed death records  Sept. 1995.  Carpenter, Benjamin C.,  226, Ontario County Times, Dec. 18, 1872, age 64, place of death E. Bloomfield.  (Age is different than above.  We have his birthdate, so feel this notation is in error.)

Ontario County, NY, Surrogate Court petition of Eleanor Carpenter of East Bloomfield, regarding the estate of Benjamin C. Carpenter states that Benjamin died in East Bloomfield on the 11th day of Dec. 1872, and left surviving heirs as follows:  Eleanor Carpenter widow, Nancy Davis daughter, of Farmington, Ontario, NY, Charles Carpenter, son, of Naples, Ontario County, NY, Helen Parker, daughter, of Palmyra, Ontario, NY, Abel B. Living with step-son Charles Carpenter in the 1880 US Census.

778. Mary Carpenter

Family records stated it believed Mary had no children.  She was adopted.

373. Nathaniel W. Carpenter

1810 U. S. Census, Middlesex, Ontario, NY Film 081387. Salt Lake City, Family History Library. Robert Carpenter and Phebe, Nathaniel's father and mother, have 4 sons and 1 daughter at the time of census. (Abner b. 1799, Sally  b. 1801, Benjamin b. 1804, Nathaniel b. 1806, Calvin b. 1808.  Bestey was b. after the census in Sept, 1810).

1820 U. S. Census, Bristol, Ontario, NY. Film #193717.SLC-FH Library  Robert and Phebe have 5 sons, and 5 daughters. (Abner b. 1799, Sally b. 1801, Benajmin b. 1804, Nathaniel b. 1806, Calvin b. 1808, Betsy b. 1810, Robert O. b. 1812, Margaret b. 1814, Nancy b. 1816 and Rowena T. b. 1819)

1830 U. S. Census, Bristol, Ontario, NY. Film #017053, Page 224, SLC-FHL Robert and Phebe have 5 sons, and 5 daughters, same as in 1820, but Abner is now married and head of a household next door, and Sally is also married and with her husband, William Kaufman.   Robert and Phebe had William b. 1821, and Phebe b. 1823 added to their family so the numbers remain the same, although the family members are different.  Little Christine was b. 1826 but died in 1827, therefore is not on the census. Nathaniel is still alive because the numbers match.  (In 1993 we found Nathaniel's first daughter was b . 1828, so apparently Nathaniel was not in the home. One of the other boys may have been counted twice as often happened for military purposes in the 15 to 20 age range.  We have not found where Nathaniel was in 1830).

1840 U. S. Census, Middlesex, Yates, NY   Film  #017210 page 349, SLC-FHL. Nathaniel is head of the household and the only one named. There were three males besides Nathaniel, 2 under 5 years, and l between 5-10.  There were four  females, 1 under 5, 2 between 5-10, and 1 between 10-15. There were a total of seven children.

1850 U. S. Census, Cohocton, Steuben, NY. taken, 18 Sept.  Household 115/119. Nathaniel Carpenter, 44,  b. NY; Almira,. 40, b. VT; Polly, 16, b. NY; Marquis, 14, b. NY; Albert, 13, b. NY;  Paulina, 10, b. NY; Adalaide, 5, b. NY;  Berry. S or Bessy S, or Benj. S. female, 3, b. NY ( S. sounds like F., so this could be an easy mistake, but this census definitely says female.   It must have been Benj. S. and should have been male because Benjamin F. is on the 1860 census as 12 years old.  If there had been a girl and then a boy, he still would have had to be on that 1850 census to be 12 in 1860!  All the other census are Benjamin F., male, so we are assuming the mistake was in the gender and initial only, and it was Benj. even though it could easily be read Berry/Bessy).

1857, Ontario County Deeds, Archives Building, Canandaigua, Ontario, NY, Book 128, p. 265-267.  Nathaniel gave his residence as Royalton, Niagra, NY. He signed off on the sale of the Carpenter property.

1860 U. S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI  taken 21 June. , Film #803536,  page 623, SLC, Utah-FHL .   20/20. Carpenter,   Nathan W., (Nathaniel), age  53, b. NY; Elvira, female, 49; (Almira in 1850, death record and on tombstone); Fernando, 25, male, (Marquis in 1850);  Pauline A., 18, female; Adalandi, female, 14;  Benjamin F., 12, male.  All b. NY but Elvira b. VT.   Frenando attended a reunion in Athens, Calhoun, MI in 1895 (Calvin Loomis Carpenter Reunion, Nathaniel's brother).  Fernando signed in as a relative, although there was a place to sign if just  a visitor, and said he lived in Plainwell, MI.  This was the way we finally found Nathaniel and then proceeded to find the remainder of  his family!

1870  U .S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI, Film # 552160, SLC-FH Library.  Nathaniel's wife Almira, age 59, is in the home of Chester and Polly Honeywell (Polly is the daughter of Nathaniel and Almira).  Recorded as:  Honeywell, Chester, 35 ; Polly, 35; Almira, 9; Elmer, 1 male;  Carpenter, Almira, 59,  b. VT.  Nathan is supposed to have died in 1864, but no death record has been found to date (1993).  Polly's first husband was William.  We do not know if it is his first or last name, but believe it is his first name.

Almira, wife of N. W. Carpenter,  is buried in Hillside Cem., Gum Plain Twp., Plainwell, Allegan, MI.  Her son Fernando, who was next door to Polly, her daughter, on the 1870 Census, household 173/177, is also buried there with his wife, Helen, and two sons, but there is no record of Nathaniel buried there according to Sexton's records. There is, however, a grave that has no record and Nathaniel might have been buried before sexton records were kept.

In 1993, contact was made with Lois Semens in Lansing, Michigan, a descendant of Nathaniel, who supplied records and pictures.  She and her father were visited in 1993 in Lansing, MI.

Almira Lewis

See Nathaniel's record for Census data.

Royalton Center Methodist Chruch, Bound book in county historian's office, Locksport, Niagara , NY. Sept 1995.   Elmira Carpenter appears on the Methodist Church rolls until Aug. 1857, and her name was taken off "by letter".  Her daughters Polly and Pauline were also on the list.  Pictures of the church were taken in 1995.  Nathaniel's sister, Betsy Carpenter Griffis, and husband, Thomas Griffis, and children, William,, Henry, and Hiram, also appear in these church records.

Almyra was 59 on the 1870 census and in the home of her daughter Polly and Chester Honeywell in Prairieville, Barry , MI.  Her daughter Polly died about 1875, and Almira not until 1888 so she probably was with son Fernando after Polly's death.  We could not find Fernando on the 1880 Soundex for Michigan to validate this assumption. Her name has been recorded as Almira, Elmira, Elvira and Myra on different documents. Almira is buried by her son Fernando and his family, in the Hillside Cem., Gun Plain Twp., Plainwell, Allegan , MI.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE. The Plainwell Enterprise, Plainwell, MI, 18 Apr 1888 - Mrs. Carpenter, mother of Fernando Carpenter and Mrs. W. H. King, died about 9:30 Saturday morning and was buried yesterday.

DEATH.  Allegan County Clerk's Office, Allegan, MI, Vol. 2, page 89, death record #852.  Almira died 14 April 1888, 76y6m10d,  parents:  Robert Carpenter and Louise.  On her son's death record (Wm. Riley Carpenter 1830-1920) she was listed a Myra Lewis (Almira on most Census).  We are going to use Lewis, because it is too much of a concidence that her father and her husband's father would have the same name, Robert Carpenter. When she died someone might not have remembered and used Louise, instead of Lewis.   Or they probably have thought they were asked for the names of both parents' fathers, and the person said, Robert Carpenter and Lewis, and the one recording it heard " Louise."   Descendants were found in 1993 and they have confirmed the name is Lewis, and Almira's father was Levi Lewis, mother was Polly Putnam).  Her death certificate is wrong.  She died of pneumonia.

780. Alice Carpenter

1840 U .S.Census of Middlesex, Ontario (now Yates ) NY Nathaniel had a female in his home who was 10-15 (1825-1830).  We have not found this daughter yet. (Descendants of Nathaniel were found in Aug 1933, and their records gave the name of this child as Alice, her date of birth as 1828, and who she married, except it did not give her married last name, only that she married a Daniel A. No last name for her marriage was given.

787. Darieus A. Carpenter

Age 4

788. Adalaide F. Carpenter

1850 U. S.Census, Cohocton, Steuben, NY, Adalaide is age 5 and in the home of her parents.

1860 U. S.Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI, Adalandi, female is 14, and in the home of her parents.

MARRIAGE.  Barry County Clerk, Hastings, MI.  Marriages,  Liber. B-38.  Benjamin F. Storr,  age 30,  of Gun Plain Twp., Allegan , MI. married Adelaide F. Carpenter of Prairieville Twp, Barry , MI, age 19, on 9 Nov 1864 in Prairieville, MI .  Witnesses:  Fernando Carpenter, and Paulina A. King both of Prairieville.  Loomis Benson, Mininster.  (Family records sent in 1993 say she married Franklin.  The F. in Benjamin must stand for Franklin, Benjamin Franklin Storr.)

Transcript of above marriage:  Found April 9, 1993 Barry County Clerk's Office, Courthouse, Hastings, MI.  Benjamin F. Storr and Adelaide F. Carpenter:  Filed and recorded December 5 A. D., 1864, D. L. Miken (?), Deputy Clerk, State of Michigan, Barry County.    I hereby certify that on the 9th day of November A. D., 1864, at Prairieville, in the county aforesaid, I, Loomis Benson, joined in marriage Benjamin F. Storr of Gun Plain Twp., County of Allegan, in the State of Michigan, aged 30 years, and Adelaide F. Carpenter of Prairieville, Barry County and State of Michigan, aged 19 years, that the parties did then and there solemnly declare that they took each other as husband and wife and that there were present as witnesses, Fernando Carpenter of Prairieville and Paulina A. King of Prairieville.  Dated at Prairieville this ninth day of November A. D., 1864.  Signed Loomis Benson, Minister.

We have not found Adalaide on the 1880, 1900, or 1910 Soundex for the Census of Michigan in the counties where they would be expected to be. We have pictures of some school children named Storr in the Prairieville, Barry , MI area.  Thus we know a Storr family lived there.  1860 U. S. Census, Barry County, Prairieville Twp., 136/119 Storr, Anna, 66, b. PA, Franklin, 24, b. OH, Isaac, 30, b. OH.  1870 U. S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, Michigan, Storr, Thomas, 58, mw, b. England; Mary, 49, fw, b. OH; Albert, 17, mw, b. MI; Alfred, 17, mw, b. MI.  Also a James Storr, age 50 b. England is in the home of 140/143 John Allen, same town.  Lucy J. Storr, 25, b. PA is in the home 166/170 of Horace Flower also same town.    We did find some Storr families in Eaton , which is the next county East of Barry  There were three families, but they did not seem to match. Their references were:  Vol 19, Ed. 80, Sheet , Line 19, Sheet 6, Line 20, and Sheet 11, Line 87.  These references might be checked further.

We recently found information on Adalaide's brother "Frank's" son's death (Zael's) record that said "Frank" (Benjamin Franklin Carpenter ) lived in Oceola County in 1887 as that was where John Zael was born. We will look in Oceola County for Frank's other children and  to see if Paulina, and Adalaide were in that county also. Family records sent in 1993 Have given us the name of a descendant whom we will contact for further information. 1880 Osceola County census was scanned.  We did not find Adalaide or Paulina.

1860 U. S. Census, Barry County, Prairieville Twp., Michigan.  134/119  Storr, Anna, 66, b. PA; Franklin, 24, b. OH; Isaac, 30, b. OH.  Not proven this is our Benjamin Franklin that married Adalaide Carpenter, but it may  be.

THE BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW OF CALHOUN COUNTY, MICHIGAN, published by Hobart & Mather, Chicago 1904, 977.422, Willard Library, Battle Creek, MI. "The Carpenter Family, first represented in Michigan by Calvin Loomis Carpenter, until his death March 18, 1886, a successful farmer and honored resident of Calhoun County, came originally from England, his grandfather having settled in Connecticut at an early day.  He became a soldier in the Revolutionary War and met his death Oct. 17, 1777 at the battle of Bemis Heights.  He left a widow and two children, a son and a daughter.  The son, Robert by  name, was born in 1775, and after the death of his father, he was taken into the home of a man named Loomis, who reared him to manhood, giving him the advantages of a good education as well as a practical training along other lines.  He subsequently married Phebe McNair, who was born in Connecticut in 1781, the descendant of Scotch ancestry and whose death occurred in 1868.  To them were born the following children:  Abner, born Dec. 21, 1799; Sally, b. Sept. 25, 1801, and died April 28, 1888; Benjamin C., born July 25, 1804; Nathaniel, b. Sept. 14, 1806; Calvin L., the personal subject of this review, born in Middlesex, NY, Aug. 2, 1808; Betsey, b. Sept. 14, 1810 and d. Sept. 12, 1892; Robert O., b. Oct. 21, 1812, d. Aug. 1871; Margaret, b. Sept. 17, 1814; Nancy b. Nov. 13, 1816, d. 1895; Rowena b. July 10, 1819, d. Dec. 29, 1893; William, b. April 6, 1821, d. Sept. 7, 1897; Phoebe, b. April 9, 1823, d. Oct. 23, 1877; Christina, b. 11 May 1826.

"Calvin L. Carpenter was married in 1831 to Eleanor D. Pierce, the oldest daughter of Henry L. Pierce of Bristol, NY, and to them were born the following children:  Armida A., b. Oct 12, 1832, d. Jan 8, 1870; Calvin L., b. March 1, 1833, d. July 19, 1884; Henry L., b. Aug 6, 1834; William Q. (should be W.), b. Jan. 7, 1836; Ellen M., b. Jan. 6, 1838, d. Jan. 25, 1895; Robert, b. April 29, 1839; Melissa L., b. June 24, 1842; Phoebe J., b. Aug. 25, 1843; Rial A., b. 28 Oct 1844; Alva A., b. Aug. 22, 1846; Thomas J., b. Dec. 25, 1848; Oliver J., d. Feb. 2, 1852; Abner L., b. Nov. 20, 1852; Rowena L., b. Sept. 12, 1854, d. Jan 27, 1859.  Mrs. Carpenter died Nov. 7, 1870, age 57y 25d.  Mr. Carpenter came to Michigan in 1853 accompanied by his family with the exception of one daughter who had married in Allegany , NY (Armida came to MI later as she is buried in the same Cem. as her father), and settled in Sherwood Twp., Branch , MI.  He remained in that location until 1859 when with his family he removed to Athens Twp., Calhoun County where he purchased 40 acres of timberland and built a log house and with the help of his sons brought the land to a state of cultivation.  At the break out of the Civil War two sons, Loomis and Robert, responded to the first call and before peace was declared two other sons, Rial and Henry, also volunteered. The sons who first enlisted were both wounded, but all returned safe to their home at the close of the war.  After the death of his first wife, Mr. Carpenter was united in marriage to Mrs. Betsey Wilder.  Mr. Carpenter was a man of push and energy, and throughout his long life in this section of the state retained the respect and esteem of all with whom he came in contact.  A notable event in the lives of all who bear the name of Carpenter is a family reunion which is held every year, the first one being observed in 1893."

Calvin's 40 acres was west of Athens, Calhoun County, MI, on V Drive South.

He was 77 years old at the time of his death, and is buried in the N. Sherwood Cem., Branch , MI. The tombstone is just inside gate, and is tall and slender and said he died in 1886.  The Bible gave 1885 as date of death.

Sources of Information:  "FAMILY RECORD of the CARPENTER FAMILY", published in 1947 in IL.  Tombstone dates for parents, children #3, Henry Leighton, #8, Phebe Jane "Jennie", #9 Rial Allen, and #11, Thomas Jefferson, were verified.

The family Bible is in the possession of Mrs. Floyd Batty Jr. 3012 Cunningham, Wichita Falls, TX , 76308 (in 1969). Letters:  Lina Snyder (daughter of Rial) Athens, MI. (She was interviewed on three occasions.  The last time when she was 103.  She died at 104 years of age).  Also Mrs. Helen Fox's letters of Canandaigua, NY: and letters from Mr. Carrol Webster, grandson of William Wallace Carpenter.

Mr. Carrol Webster,  deceased 1996,  gave his father's (William Wallace's) birth place as Astabula, Ohio, but we believe this is in error (although his MOTHER was born there) because Calvin's family was still in NY in 1836.  See 1850 census too.  The family was reported as coming to Michigan in 1853.

Also Reunions (records) held in Athens, Michigan from 1893 on to 1939 were used.  We have a copy of the book of signatures.

On parents tombstone it says "Lydia R. d. 27 Jan 1859, 4y4m14d."  Full name must be Lydia Rowena Carpenter.  Family records had Rowena L.

Middlesex, the town of birth, was originally in Ontario County.  The county was later divided and Middlesex became a part of Yates County.

Eleanor D. Pierce

Another account said Eleanor was born in Massachusetts.

DEATH. Calhoun County Clerk-Register, Marshall, MI, Deaths, Vol. 1, page 42, #759, Nov. 7, 1870, Elanor Carpenter, female, married, 57y25m, cause of death:  general paralysis, born NY, occupation domestic, place of death Athens.

Eleanor is buried in N. Sherwood Cem. south of Athens, MI, on Highway M-60 just west of the intersection with Highway M-66.  The monument is tall and slender and is just inside the gate.

NY; Wm., 18, male; Hiram, 15, male, Ostuyal (extremely difficult to read), 12, female (should be Henry O., Male); Duane, 8 male, all children b. NY.  (His name is spelled Griffith on this census, and the 1860, but their son William on the 1860 is spelled Griffis. Hiram's wife's death certificate spelled her name as Kate Griffin, died 1906 in Athens, Calhoun, MI.  The name Griffith, Griffin, and Griffis all came from a similar source and are at times interchanged. The name should have been Griffis.  The Census taker could have thought he heard Griffith, as they sound alike in speech.)

1851, Royalton Center Methodist Church, (Bound book in County Historian's Office, Lockport, Niagara, NY 1995) Thomas and Betsey Griffis appear on the church rolls.  Besides their name it says "see next list," the dates for those above them were 1849 and  just after were 1850. On the same page after six names is "Hiram Griffis, Henry Griffis, William Griffis", and besides their names is "Dropped" On another page, by the name of William Griffis it shows "dropped 1860". Close to the date of 1864, Thomas and Betsey are listed again, then below, "Revised, January 7, 1865".  Thomas Griffis and Betsey Griffis were "removed by letter dated Nov 4, 1867." (Probably when they left the area of Royalton.) (Polly, Pauline and Elmira Carpenter were also on this church list. Elmira was the wife of Nathaniel Carpenter, Betsey's brother.)

1855  New York State Census, Royalton, Niagara, NY.  (Record given to us by Mr. Donald Jerge, Town Historian for Royalton Twp., Niagara County, NY, who was living in Gasport in 1995).  The census indicated  the family lived in a log cabin.  Household  #58 Griffis, Thomas, 55, b. Obituary of Thomas and Betsey's son Hiram, Athens, MI (Athens Times) said he was born in Royalton, Niagara, NY in 1837.   It said he was the second of 5 boys.  His brother, Erastus, was still living in 1923 in Pentwater, MI.   Others had died, according to the obituary.  Hiram's death verified in Calhoun , MI records, as was his wife, who was called," Kate".

1870 U.S.Census of Athens, Calhoun, MI,  taken 20 June 1870.  Household, 174/174 Griffis, Betsey age 59 b. NY; Erastus, male, age 17, b. NY; Harvey J. age 10. (Next door is 175/175 Griffis, William age 37 male, Martha, female age 32, Elizabeth female, age 10, and Frank Robinson age 8 male). Betsey is also right next door (on the other side) to her brother Calvin L. Carpenter.

1880 U.S. Census of Riverton, Mason MI, Enumeration District 169. Sheet _, line 10.  Betsey is in the home of her son, Erastus.  The census states: Griffis, Erastus D. age 26 b. NY; Julia, wife, age 24 b. WI.; Earl R., son age 4 b. MI; Edna E., daughter age 2 b. MI; Carpenter, Betsey, mother, age 68 b. NY. (On the 1880 census her son William is in Hillsdale, Hillsdale, MI and her son Hiram and wife, Kate, are in Athens, Calhoun, MI. Hiram and Kate attended the Carpenter Family Reunions held in Athens for years.)

1900 Census, Riverton, Mason, MI, Erastus Griffis is on the film but Betsey is not.  She died in 1892.

Family records say she died in Pentwater, Oceana, MI.   This has been verified.  She was living with her son, Erastus, in Riverton Twp., Mason, MI, in 1880.  A visit was made to Pentwater, MI 10 Apr 1994 and her grave was found in the N. Weare Cem. near the town of Pentwater, Oceana, Michigan.  Descendants of William and Erastus were very helpful in supplying much family data.  Etta Lenz, Thomas' and Betsey's great grandaughter, through their son Erastus and his son Orlo, welcomed us into her home and invited other relatives to meet with us.  Such a gracious lady!  We are indebted to all of those who came.  We met descendants of Thomas' and Betsey's son, William, also.

Death Records, Ludington, Mason, MI. (Personally copied.)  Book 2, Page 60, Record No. 13, Betsey Griffis, female, died 12 Sept 1892 age 83, died Riverton, Mason, MI. of old age.  Father: Robert Carpenter, Mother: Unknown , both b. NY.  She was a widow. (We know her mother was Phebe McNair).

Visit to North Weare Cem., Weare Twp. (Close to Pentwater, Oceana, MI)  Betsey's grave was found. Lot 4 Sec.13.  It gave her birth 14 Sept 1810  and death  12 Sep 1892.  This was verified in April 1994. They lived close to the Mason and Oceana County lines.  Her death is recorded in Mason County, but she is buried in Oceana County.

There is a Thomas J. Griffis 1848-1922 buried in Burr Oak Cem., Athens, Calhoun, MI.  Do not know if there is a relationship or not.

There were other Griffis families in Athens, and although we have not found a relationship as yet, they are given here so further research might be done as we know so little about Thomas Griffis.  There is  a David S. Griffis, 1900 Soundex for Athens, Calhoun, MI. Vol 11, ED 33, Sheet 9, Line 81, b. Aug 1834, age 65 b. NY, 72 Champion St., Griffis, Sarah P. wife b. Oct 1840, age 59, b. MI., Bushnell, Ray BO Dec 1882 17, b. MI; Bushnell, Howard BO, Dec 1885, 14 b. MI; Gould, Earl BO Aug 1883 16 b. MI; Wheeler, Jessie BO Feb 1878 21 b. MI. (BO might mean boarder).  Relationship, as stated,  has not been established.

Thomas Griffis

On the 1880 Census, William gave his father's birthplace as NY.  Thomas was on the 1850, 1860 Census of Royalton, Niagara, NY. and on the 1865, but not on the 1870 Athens, Calhoun  Mich. census with his wife.  He may have died between those years.    (In 1994 descendants in Pentwater, Mich. said they did not know if he ever came to that area or not,{one believed he did}, but it is doubtful because he was supposed to have died in 1867, which was before Betsy was alone on the 1870 census in Athens, Calhoun, Michigan, which was even before she moved north to Oceana County, Mich.)  See notes under Betsy's son Duane.  One person who did research on the line said they believed he died before or shortly after he left NY area for Mich.

Thomas and  Betsy were found on the 1850, 1855, 1860, and 1865 census and some church records show they were in Royalton until 1867. (See Betsy's documentation.)  Personal visit to Royalton, Niagara, NY Sept 1995.  Land records were also availiable.

Descendants of Thomas and Betsy gave us copies of old tintype pictures believed to be Thomas and Betsy when they were young.  They also gave us many records on and after April 10, 1994 in Pentwater, MI. Other pictures contained the children.  One picture had Betsy in a rocking chair, among others. on the lawn of the homestead, but the  picture was not too clear.

Descendants in 1996 wrote that in 1865 Thomas moved to Michigan. Then he must have died in Michigan, as he died in 1867.  We thought previously he died in Niagara , NY.

376. Robert O. Carpenter

BOOK: 2004
Donna Harris HHellewell and Elma Wisnieski Carpenter wrote in 2004 a book caled "Robert O. Carpenter - Seventh Child of Robert Carpenter and Phebe McNair - His ancestors and Descendants."

1837. Ontario County, New York.   Sale of land from Calvin L. Carpenter and Eleanor, his wife, of Bristol,  to Robert O. Carpenter.  Witnesses were their two sister, Margaret Carpenter, and Rowena T. Carpenter.  We have a copy of the document.

1855 New York  State Census of Naples, Ontario County,  taken on 25 June.  150/203, Robert O. Carpenter, 42, male, b. Yates , NY, years resident in town, 4 yr, farmer, owns land.;. Plexany,  39, wife,  b. Ontario ,  NY;  Napolean B.,  age 18, male; Adalaide,  16, female; Ichabod,  15, male; Symphronia,  12, female (Alwilda); Agusta,  10, female; George,  8, male; Sarah,  6, female; Martha,  3, female; Robert O.,  1, male. All children were born in Ontario ,  NY. (Naples is sometimes called West Hollow.)  Robert had 60 acres of land,  value  $3,000.  Americus is not on this census, and should be at age 5, as he is age 10 on the 1860 census.  We have not been able to find  Robert O. Carpenter Sr. on a 1850 census as yet..

1857  Ontario County Deeds, Archives Building, Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York, Book 128, p.  265-267.  Robert O. signed off on the sale of the Carpenter land in Ontario County in 1857.  So did his wife, "Plexany".

1860 U. S. Census Naples, Ontario County, NY, taken 27 June,  259/259. Robert O. Carpenter, age 46 b. NY; Plexana, 44,  b. NY; Ichabod, 19, male, b. NY; George, 14, male, b. NY; Sarah, 11, female, b. NY; Americus, 10, male, b. NY; Martha, 8, female, b. NY; Robert, 6, male, b. NY; Frances, 3 (Jennie), female, b. NY; Agusta, 15,  male, b. NY.  In 1855 Agusta was listed as female.   Napolean, and Adaladi are no longer in the home. We believe there was an older sister because Adaladi's obituary stated that Adaladi was the second daughter
1860 U. S. Census, Naples, Ontario County, NY.   130/148, Sophrona A. Carpenter, domestic b. NY is in this home at South Bristol, Ontario, NY.  (South Bristol is next to Naples).  Napolean is in the home of Mrs. Elizabeth (Franklin) Simmons, Naples, New York.  Agusta was also  listed, about this time,  in the household of Isaac Bathana Wood, b. Mass.  Possibly this is her  grandparent's  home (?) because Augusta's mother's name was Wood.

1865, New York State Census, Naples, Ontario County. taken 19 June.    Frame, 50, 110,  Robert Carpenter, 52,  b. Yates , farmer;  Plexany, age 49, wife, b. Ontario  Co, NY; George W., 19, m, single;  Sarah J., f, 17; Americus, 15; Martha, 13, f;  Robert, 11 m; Jennie, 8; (Frances on 1860 census),f; Napolean, 29, m, and then crossed out;  Ichabod W., 25, m; Sophronia, (Adwilda), 22, f.    Augusta, should be about 20, and Adaladi are not listed. Adaladi was not married until abt 1868. Napolean and  Icabod were listed out of order, so they may not have been there.  The Civil War had taken so many from their homes, maybe the parents were allowed to give their names, even though not present. In 1995 in Ontario County, NY we reviewed this census and Napoleon's name had been crossed out. We have a photocopy of it.

1866 & 1868  Marriage Records, Barry , Michigan.   Film 100321, SLC Family History Library, Book C p. 17. Barry County has records of 2nd and 3rd marriages. Also found in Barry County Clerk's Office, Courthouse, Hastings, Michigan, Liber C, page 49 for Melissa and Liber C p. 17 for Emily Hallett.   Robert married , 28 July 1866 in Prairieville, MI, Melissa O. Mason, residing in  Hope, MI, age 22,  his age was 53, residing in Prairieville.  She died 9 Feb. 1868, age 24y5m19d.   Third, he married, in Hope, MI,  Emily D. Hallet (Mrs. Dickerson,) residing in Genoa, NY, age 56, b. Lansing, on 25 Feb. 1869, his age 56, b. Middlesex, NY. Justice of the Peace:  Luther Brown..  David and Mary Bailey, of Hope, MI,  were witness at both marriages.

BIRTH.  County Clerk's Office, Hastings, MI, record 383, Cora M. Carpenter [Cora Bell], b. 17 June 1867, Prairieville, Barry , MI, father: Robert O. Carpenter, b. NY, mother: Melissa Carpenter, b. PA.  Recorded June 15, 1868.

Cem. Records of Cressey Cem., Prarieville Twp., Barry County, Michigan, Family History Library  Film 0927468, viewed in Salt Lake City, Utah.  This is where Robert's first wife, Plexana, is buried.  Cedar Creek Cem. records, Hope Twp., Barry County, Michigan, viewed.  Second wife, Melissa, is buried here next to David and Mary Bailey.  A visit was made to both cemeteries in 1992.

1870 U. S. Census, Hope, Barry County, MI. Viewed at the  County Clerk's Office, Hastings, MI, record 383.    Cora M. Carpenter, (Cora Bell) age 2, (b. 17 June 1867, Prairieville, Barry, MI,  Father: Robert O. Carpenter, b. NY, Mother: Melissa Carpenter, b. PA, Recorded June 15, 1868), is in the home of David and Mary Bailey.  David and Mary Bailey were witnesses at both Robert's second and third marriages.   Melissa, Cora's mother, died in 1868, and Cora was then cared for by the Bailey's.  After Mary Bailey's death in the early 1870's, it appears that Cora was then raised by  David Bailey.  Cora  was not in the Bailey home on the  1880 censes, but Cora was in the home of David Bailey in 1884 on the Michigan  State Census. In David Bailey's Will he leaves money to Cora M. Vandenberg, apparently  her married name.  David and Mary Bailey  are buried next to the second wife, Melissa O. Mason Carpenter, wife of R. O. Carpenter in Cedar Creek Cem., Hope Twp., Barry County, Michigan.  We later found Cora's family in the state of Washington.   She went by the name of Cora Bailey before her marriage.  A descendant said Cora was raised by her "aunt." More research is needed.

1870 U. S. Census of Washtenaw County, MI, Robert's daughter, Jennie, is in the home of Nancy and Clark Rogers.  Nancy is Robert O. Sr.'s sister.  At this time Plexana, Jennie's mother, is deceased (1867) and Jennie's father, Robert O., died the year after the census (1871).

Divorces for Barry County, Michigan, 1850-1899.  There is a record of the filing for a  divorce by Emily Carpenter against  Robert Carpenter in 1870. There is also a Notice of Publication of the commencement of the divorce proceedings against Robert Carpenter because personal service on him could not be made.  The fie is marked "file closed" 1870.  Dismissed 1916, no activity, in Chancery B251, Drawer 21.

Robert is said to have died in August 1871 in Melville, Ottawa, according to New York reunion notes.  We believe he died in Kansas.  His daughters, Martha A. Carpenter Allen and Sarah J. Carpenter Barnes Sanders Shadle, and a son, George W. Carpenter, were living in Kansas about this time.  Notes from the files of one of Martha's descendants state "great-grandfather Carpenter died down near Abilene."  We are still searching for Robert's death record and burial place.

1880 U. S. Census, Clay Center, Clay, KS,   Household #218. Sarah, Robert O. Sr.'s daughter,  is married to her first husband Horatio Barnes in Clay Center, KS. She had 6 children.  On the same census, and next door was Sarah's brother, and Robert O's son, George W. Carpenter and wife Olivia, with 3 children.  In the home was Robert O. (Jr.) and his wife Sarada who probably were visiting, or working for them as he is listed as a farm laborer. Seven days later Robert O. ( Jr.) and Sarada are in Robert O. Sr.'s daughter's home, Martha Carpenter Allen (Mrs. John) and their 4 children. Thus four of Robert O. Carpenter's children, Martha, George, Sarah and Robert (Jr.) were all on this census!  (Robert O. Jr. & Sarada were on it twice)! See their respecitive files.

Plexana Wood

1855 New York State Census, Naples, Ontario County.   Plexana is listed with husband and 9 children.  She is "Plexany" on this census.  She was 39 years old.

1857 Sale of Carpenter farm recorded in Ontario County Deeds, Archives Building, Canandaigua, Ontario , NY, Book 128, p. 265-267.   She is listed as "Plexany" as she gave her consent to the sale of the farm.

1860 U. S. Census, Naples, Ontario , NY.  She is "Plexana" and is with her husband and 8 children.  She is 44 yrs. old.  See husband's notes.

1865 New York State Census.  Naples, Ontario, NY.  Plexana is age 42 (probably should be abt 48, obviously 42 is incorrect).  See husband's notes.

Cem. Records for Cressey Cem. in Prairieville, Barry, MI. Viewed on film 0927468, in Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah.  Her name is spelled,  Plexania, wife of R. O. Carpenter, and that spelling is also on the tombstone.  Her name has been spelled various ways.  We will use Plexana..  She was buried there in May 1867.  In the same Cem. record there is a P. O. below her name.  It is not known what this means. It could be another Carpenter.  Possibly should be R.O. instead of P. O. for her husband Robert.

Newpaper clipping of daughter, Camille Adelaide Carpenter Standish's death.  The article states there were 7 girls and 5 boys. See Camille's notes for more details.

C. Adelaide Carpenter Standish is buried in the Coye Cem., Route 21, Ontario County, New York.  There are Wood families there too.  Hattie Wood, wife of L. A. Berner, 1868 - 1891, Ezra F. Wood, 1831 - 1915, and Claressa A. Covil wife, 1839 - 1911; William H. Wood, 17 Jan 1885, 61y11m21d; Lucy A., wife, died Nov. 16, 1887, 57y10m22d.  May be relatives of Plexana.

810. 1 Carpenter

We know little about this daughter.  We know of her because in Camille Adalaidi's obituary, it stated she was the second daughter, and in the 1855 census, Napolean was listed first and Camile second, so there probably was an older daughter who possibly died young, or  was married and away from home.

812. Napolean Bonaparte Carpenter

1855 NY State Census, Naples, Ontario County, New York, Napolean, age 18, was in the home of his parents, Robert and Plexany (Wood) Carpenter.  Napolean.

1860 U.S.Census, Naples, Ontario County, New York,  Napolean, age 22,  was in the home of Elizabeth Simmons (Mrs. Franklin).

1860 U. S. Census, reviewed in Canandaigua, Ontario County, NY in 1992, Napoleon was shown living next to (and not in Elizabeth and Franklin Simmon's home).   Cornish, Allen, age 52; Elthea, age 35; Amaziah, age 75; Hannah, age 74; Delman, age 15; Sarah, age 13; Henry, age 9.  All but the last three b. Mass (but Wife Elthea and last three b. NY).  In 1850 this family of Cornish was living in Bristol, Ontario NY.  Amaziah and Hannah Cornish are in Naples in 1850. (?) This descrepancy needs to be cleared up. A  copy of the census film viewed again in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1993 does show Napolean in the home of Simmons.

Napolean enlisted Aug 26 1861, to serve in the Civil War; re-enlisted Jan.1, 1864. Captured at Plymouth, NC 20 Apr 1864.  He served in  B., 85th Regiment.  He was reported as dying in Andersonville Prison, Georgia,  of starvation 24 July 1864. Prison records say 26 July 1864.   We have the records from Andersonville Prison.   He is buried in grave # 3977.  His sister, Camille Adelaide's obituary said he lived to return from prison. #  We feel the obituary was in error.  P.O.W.= Prisioner of War.  CIVIL WAR.

Since Napolean gave his life for his country, the following information about those that enlisted from Ontario County, New York is given here for those interested:  1788 History of Ontario County, NY, p 265  Naples in the Rebellion.  Few towns sent more troops to fight for the Union that Naples.  Our record shows over 200 name enrolled.  All met the dangers encountered on the battlefield, and many lost their lives in defense of their country.  We give below as complete a record of them as can be obtained from the military record of the town.
page 255 - 85th Infantry, Company B.  Napoleon B. Carpenter enlisted August 26, 1861; re-enlisted January 1, 1864; captured at Plymouth, NC, April 20, 1864; died in Andersonville Prison, July 23, 1864, of starvation.

We have a photocopy of this document.

1865, New York State  Census, Naples, Ontario County.   Napolean is reported in his parents family as age 29.  Perhaps the parents did not know of his death and soldiers in the war were still given by their parents on a census. (Viewing this census in Ontario  NY in 1995, Napoleon's name was crossed out.)  Additional records of the death of soldiers, it showed Napoleon died, age 29, entered service July 1861, he was a private in the 85th regiment.

816. Agusta Carpenter

1855 New York  State Census, Naples, Ontario County.   Agusta, age 10, and in the home of her parents.

1860 U. S. Census, Naples, Ontario  , NY, Agusta, age,  15 and a male. (Her sister Camille's obituary said there were 5 boys and 7 girls.  There are five distinct male names, Napolean, Ichabod, (both fought in Civil War), George, Americus, and Robert.  Therefore, we believe Agusta to be the female as stated on the 1855 census. However, this has not been proven.

.!On a family group sheet sent from a descendant Mayanne Lentz of Grayville, IL,  she said  Augusta was in the home of Isaac and Bathana Wood on the 1860 census.  This could be Plexana's family and should be researched further. (Her notations were Microfilm  88g, 88h, 88j.  Also there was 680 (don't know meaning) by Issaac  Bathana Wood's name.  Also b. Mass., something else that looked like "Peckra and below it was Redig, or Pedig"- difficult to read.  She had also written p. 32, Post Office- Naples.

October 1, 1998, received a note from Helen Fox, Route 64, Canandaigua, NY 14424.  "I helped inventory the Standish Cem. in South Bristol and found Augusta Carpenter, daughter of R and P, who died 2 Sept 1863 at 19, with the Woods.  No doubt Plexana's mother and dad.  She was with Bethena Wood, age 68, on 1860 census.  (Ezra Wood 1789-1858; Bethany Wood 1793-1867.  I will try and get more of the Wood history for your family records."

819. Americus Vespuchia Carpenter

1855 New York  State Census, Naples, Ontario County.   Americus is not on the census with his parents.  His older sister Sarah is age 6, and his younger sister Martha is age 3.  He should have been on it, at age 5.   He is on the 1860 census at  age 10. He may have been missed accidentally.

1860 U. S. Census, Naples, Ontario, New York.   Americus, male,  age 10,  is in the home of his parents.

1865 New York State Census, Naples, Onario.    Americus, male,   age 15,  is in the home of his parents.

1870  U. S. Census, Cooper Twp, Kalamazoo County, Michigan,  taken 24 Aug.    # 167/170, Carpenter, Americus, age 20, b. NY, working on the farm, is in the home of Stimpson, Alonzo, 46, b. NY; Emily, 43, b. PA;  Edna, 19,  b. MI; Mary E., 17, b. MI;  Sally (or Lilly), 15, b. MI;  Charles, 10, b. MI.   Although not proven yet, we believe this to be Robert O. Sr. son because we know other family members were in this area. There was another family of Stimpson, next door, 166/169,  possibly another son, Edwin, 23, b. NY; Lilla 20: and Elmo 1/12.

In New York it was reported that he went west to Ohio, Michigan, or some place else.   They did not know for sure.

Melissa O. Mason

Marriages of Barry County, Michigan.    Witnesses at the wedding, of Robert O. Carpenter and Melissa O. Mason, were David and Mary A. Bailey.   Melissa was age 22 when they married and Robert was 53.  See record of her husband.

Cem. records for Cedar Creek Cem., Hope Twp., Barry, MI.  Melissa died at age 24y5m19d, 9 Feb 1868. One record said Melissa died in childbirth and had a stillborn.   The Baileys, of Hope, Michigan, were witnesses at her wedding, and are buried next to her. The Bailey's also raised their daughter, Cora Bell. (See her file.)  After Mrs. Bailey died, Cora was raised by Mr. Bailey.  David Bailey  left money in his Will, to a Cora M. Vandenberg, obviously her married name. Correspondence from Cora's descendants in the state of Washington  said Cora was raised by, "an aunt."  David Bailey also left money to a son, Charles, born about 1846. David Bailey's dates are June 13, 1821 - June 28, 1899.  Mary A., his wife, Nov. 21, 1834 - Dec 27, 1874.    More research is needed her.  Melissa and Mary Bailey may have been sisters. David Bailey's son Charles is on the 1870 U. S. Census, Hope Twp., Barry County, Michigan as follows:  71/72 Bailey, Charles E., 23, b. NY; Harriet, 24, b. NY; Henrietta, 1, b. MI; and  others of a different name. There is a Sophia Bailey in household 107/108 in Johnston Twp., Barry County that may be related to David Bailey.

1880 U. S. Census, Hope Twp., Barry County, Michigan, taken June 1, Bailey, David 59, widowed, farmer; Charles, 34, married, farmer (b. about 1846) ; Harriett A., 35 daughter-in-law; Etta, 11, granddaughter; Rosa, 8, granddaughter; Zena, 8/12, grandaughter.     This is the David Bailey that raised Cora Bell Carpenter  after Melissa died.  By 1880 his wife, Mary had also died.   Cora is in the home on the 1884 State Census.   One wonders why she was not on this one. In David Bailey's will he mentions a daughter Nancy E. Mowery, as well as leaving money to Cora.  David's some is given in the will as Charles E.  We have not made a family group for David as we do not have proof that Melissa and Mary were sisters, but if someone is  following this line, the above information may be helpful.

Emily "Dickerson" Hallett

1870 U. S. Census, Johnstown Twp., Barry County, Michigan.   84/85 Dickerson, Henry C., 26, b. OH; Emily, 23, b. MI; Alvira, 1, b. MI; Burt, 6, b. OH.

Marriage Records of Barry , MI. Film 108321.  Emily  Hallett Dickerson (Mrs. Dickerson) was 56 yr., Robert was 56. She is listed as "of Genoa, NY" but born in Lansing.  He is listed of Prairieville, MI, but born in Middlesex, NY. Justice of the Peace:  Luther Brown.   Witnesses were David and Mary A. Bailey, the same persons who witnessed his 2nd mg to Melissa O. Mason.  Melissa and the Bailey's are buried next to each other in Cedar Creek Cem., Hope, Barry , MI.  A 2 yr old Cora Carpenter was in the Bailey's home on the 1870 census.  Birth record has been found and Cora was the daughter of Robert and Melissa.

377. Margaret Carpenter

Death record in Canandaigua Historical Society, Canandaigua, Ontario, NY, has record of Margaret's husband's first wife Maria, given here for clarification purposes.  Entries were extracted from newspaper dated 15 June 1842.  "Maria Rogers (Maria Reed Rogers), Mrs. Anthony Rogers, late of Canandaigua, Est. date of death 9 June 1842, abt. 28 yrs. Place of death, Webster (Monroe , NY)." explanations in parenthesis have been added for clarification, they were not in the record. It is important to give here so children on the census can be put with the correct mother.

1850 U. S. Census, Tuscola, Livingston , MI, taken  8 Oct 1850. Rogers, Anthony, age 37; Margaret, age 34 (wife); Martha, 15; Henryett, 13; Josaphine, 10; Rowena, 5; Adaladi; 2; all girls and parents born NY. The first three girls were Maria Reed Rogers' children.  Margaret raised them after their mother's death and her marriage to Anthony.

1860 U. S.Census, Prairieville, Barry , MI, taken 6 Jun. 139/123 Anthony Rogers, 48 b. NY, farmer, Real Est. Value 1800; Margaret, 45, b. NY; Roana (Rowena), 15 b. NY; Adaline (Amelia Adeladi), 13. b. NY; Samuel, 3; b. MI. (Martha married George New in 1857 and Henrietta married David Willson/Wilson in 1857. David's father used two "ll's" and some sons used two, but most of them only one "l" in Wilson.

1870 U. S.Census, Prairieville, Barry , MI, taken 12 Aug.  186/190 Anthony Rogers, 58; Margaret, 55; Rowena
25.  (Josephine married John D. Markham about 1862, and Amelia Adeladi married Adelbert B. Chapman 4 Feb 1865.  Marriage license said Albert, but it was Adelbert.  This was proven from the 1850 Census in Gorham, Ontario ,NY when he was with his parents, also the 1870 census when Adelbert was in the home of David and Henrietta Wilson in Prairieville, Barry, MI.)

1880 U.S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI, taken 10 Jun.  152/157 Anthony Rogers, 67; Margaret, 65, wife: Roena L., (spelled this way) 34.

1884 Michigan State Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI, taken 4 Jun.  5/8 Anthony Rogers, 73 (probably should be
71); Margaret, 69.  Anthony gives both parents as born in NY.  Margaret gives her father b. Mass. and mother b. RI.  The birth places of Margaret's parents was our first strong clue that this was our Margaret Carpenter, because her father Robert Carpenter was b. Mass., and her mother Phebe McNair was b. RI.  She also named her first daughter Rowena.  Her sister, Phebe Carpenter Jones, also named a daughter Rowena, probably because they both had a sister Rowena Carpenter (Pierce) who did not come to MI, but stayed in NY.  Margaret's daughter Rowena married Charles Porter 9 Feb 1883 so is not on the census with Anthony and Margaret for the first time.

No death record has been found for Margaret, but is believed to be in 1887, as she was on the Michigan State Census in 1884, and Anthony remarried in 1888.  The family record had Margaret's death as 1878, but there is no record of any Margaret who died that year in Barry , so the assumption is the numbers were transposed, and it was 1887, not 1878. A very detailed search has been made for Margaret's death record, but none has been found in any county of the State of Michigan that would fit "our" Margaret as of 1992.  It is believed that her death may not have been recorded. It is still believed to be "our" Margaret as this Margaret and Phebe Carpenter Jones (her sister) obviously kept close contact with each other.  Margaret's step-grandson (George E. New through her step-daughter Martha Rogers New who Margaret raised) married Phebe Carpenter Jones' youngest daughter, Estelle, another incident linking the two families.  Also, Lina Carpenter Snyder of Athens, MI (granddaughter of Calvin Loomis Carpenter, brother to Margaret and Phebe), wrote in a letter  that Margaret and Phebe lived in Barry County close to each other.  Margaret Carpenter and Anthony Rogers lived in Prairieville, Barry County, Michigan and Phebe Carpenter and her husband, John Jones, lived in Orangeville, the next town.

Marriage Records of Barry  MI Book D-10 married in Hastings, Barry  MI,  Married 2 Aug 1888, Anthony Rogers, b. NY, to Caroline Blackman Turner, b. Ohio, she was 34 or 54, Anthony was 54 (probably should have been 74), both "of Prairieville."  He stated he had been married twice before and she had been married once before. Anthony gives his father as Samuel Rogers and mother as Martha Van Auken. Caroline gives her father as Thomas Blackman and mother Caroline Draper. Witnesses were John W. Nevins, and Guy Nevins.

1894 Michigan State Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI.  103/107 Anthony Rogers, age 82; Elizabeth 54.  This census said he was married in 1888.  Elizabeth and Caroline Blackman Turner are probably the same person. Their ages do not match, but no other marriage entry could be found, and Anthony said he had married in 1888, the same year he married Caroline.  Her name may have been Caroline Elizabeth.

Death Records Barry  MI. Book B-34. entry 113, "Anthey" 16 Oct 1895, 82y0m12d, d. Prairieville.   Father: Samuel Rogers, mother unknown (mother is Martha Van Auken).  No death record can be found for Margaret, as stated above.

Cem. Records of Prairieville Cem., Barry , MI. were viewed in a book and a visit was made to the Cem..  A lot owned by Anthony has their son, Samuel, buried there.  Samuel d. 13 Sept 1867, age 11y16d.  Died of Typhoid. There is no record of Anthony or Margaret buried there.  Lot has one tall momument (now, 1992, broken in three pieces) with just "Samuel, son of A & M Rogers" and dates, nothing else has been engraved on the monument.  A smaller stone marks Samuel's grave, but is unreadable.

1900 U.S. Census, Johnston, Barry , MI. Vol. 5, Ed. 44, Sheet 8, line 42, taken 19 July.  Rowena, age 46, and Charles Porter, age 40, are there.  They said they had had no children. Amelia Adeladi and Adelbert B. Chapman have not been found since the 1870 census of Prairieville, due to the wrong name given on the wedding license "Albert," when it should have been Adelbert. On the 1850 Census of Gorham, Ontario, NY, Adelbert is with his parents Issac and Mary Chapman and so is his brother, Seth, who was a witness at Adelbert's marriage to Amelia Adeladi Rogers.

The 1880 Soundex  was searched again in Oct 1992 and no Adelbert, or his father Issac, nor his brother Seth was on that film. (In 1880, Seth's son, Lewis, is in the home of Burton and Susan Warner in Prairieville, Barry, MI; as a nephew, and in 1884 Seth is in the Warner home, but Lewis is not.  Seth is listed as a widower).   They may have left Michigan together. Adelbert and Margaret Chapman's daughter, Hattie, may be Margaret's only blood descendant.  Rowena and Amelia were the only children of Margaret who grew up.  Rowena  had no children, and Samuel died young.  We finally found that Hattie was in Kansas when Anthony Rogers' land was probated, as Amelia's share went to Hattie Chapman.  We found the marriage license of Hattie Chapman to John Ruth, but we cannot find where they went when they left Kansas.   In 1994 Adelbert Chapman was located in Kansas, see 1900 Census below.

1900 U.S. Census, Grant Twp., Republic , Kansas, Vol. 44, Ed. 94, Sheet 16, Line 6, "Chapman, Adelbert, b. Feb 1844, age 56, b. NY., Clara A., wife, b. May 1854, age 46, b. Mass; Shepherd, Mauice/or Mamie E., step dau., b. June 1873, age 26, b. NY; Hahn, John H., Bo, b. Feb 1882, 18, b. Kansas." This entry has been proven to be Adelbert who married Amelia Adelaide Rogers.  His age is right and so is the year of birth. Notice, the child was a step-child.  Apparently Amelia Adelaide has died and Adelbert has remarried. (Hattie J. Chapman, Adelbert and Amelia Adelaide's daughter, was in the home of her grandparents, Issac and Martha Chapman in Plainwell, Allegan, MI on the 1880 census, age 13.) At the time of Adelbert's brother's, John's, death in 1889, it said the father Issac was in Kansas.  Issac was not buried by his wife Martha, d. 10 Mar 1883, 62 years old,  or son John who died 1889 in the Brown Cemetery in Orangeville, Barry , MI.  We have found Isaac's burial place in Kansas.  Adelbert had been married twice after Amelia Adalaide died.  See additional records in his file.

The Barry County Probate Court records for Margaret's husband, Anthony Rogers, were found in the Archives at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI, and Anthony's land was left to Martha New, Henrietta Wilson, Josephine Markham, Hattie Chapman, age 29, of Norton, KS, and Rowena Porter.  We thought Hattie had not married, but we found her marriage license in Norton County, KS.  She had married  John Ruth 18 Nov 1886.  He was 24 and she was 20.  It is not known why she was listed as Hattie Chapman  on the probate documents many years later, unless they were trying to show that a portion of the land went to Amelia Adelaide Rogers Chapman's daughter and probably only heir.  Obviously Amelia Adelaide had died, probably before 1880.  Now we need to know if Hattie had children, as they would be Margaret's only descendants.  As of 1995 we still do not know where Hattie Ruth and her husband went.  Apparently they left the area where they married.

Anthony Rogers

Death record in Canandaigua Historical Society, Canandaigua, Ontario, NY. Entries were extracted from newspaper dated 15 June 1842.. Maria was the mother of Anthony's three oldest children.  Martha (Mrs. George New), Henrietta (Mrs. David Wilson) and Josephine (Mrs. John D. Ohio, she was 34 or 54, Anthony was 54, both "of Prairieville."  He stated he had been married twice (before) and she had been married once before. Anthony gives father as Samuel Rogers and mother as Martha Van Auken. Witnesses were John W. Nevins, and Guy Nevins.

1894 Michigan State Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI. Household 1032/107, Anthony age 82, Elizabeth 54.  This census said he was married in 1888.  Elizabeth and Caroline Blackman Turner are probably the same person. Their ages do not match, but no other mg. entry could be found, and Anthony said he had married in 1888, the same year he married Caroline.  Her name may have been  Caroline Elizabeth.

Death Records Barry  MI. Book B page 34. entry 113, record #143,  Roger,  "Anthey", died 16 Oct 1895, 82y0m12d.  d. Prairieville, married.    Father: Samuel Rogers, mother unknown (mother is Martha Van Auken)

Cem. Records of Prairieville Cem., Barry, MI. (In a book and a visit to the Cem.)  A lot owned by Anthony has his son Samuel buried there.  Samuel d. 13 Sept 1867, age 11 y 16d. of Typhoid Fever. There is not record of Anthony or Margaret buried there.  Lot has one tall momument (now 1992 broken in three places) with just "Samuel, son of A & M Rogers" and dates, nothing else has been engraved on the monument.  A smaller stone marking Samuel's grave is unreadable.

1900 U. S. Census, Johnston, Barry  MI. Rowena and Charles Porter are there. Anthony died five years earlier.

824. Rowena L. Rogers

1850 U.S. Census, Tuscola, Livingston, MI Film # 443572, Rowena was 5 yrs. old.  She was Margaret's Carpenter Rogers' first child, and is in the home with her mother, father, 3 half-sisters and little sister Adaladi, 2.

1860 U.S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI.  household 139/123. Roana (Rowena) is 15 yrs. old.

1870 U.S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI, Film 552160, Household186/190.  Rowena is 25 and still at home with her parents.

1880 U.S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI., Film 1254571.  Rowena is listed as age 34, in the home of her parents.  She is listed as Rowena L. on this census.  Marriage Records, State of Michigan, County of Allegan, Film 1017876, Charles Porter age 24, and Rowena Rogers age 37, both from the town of Prairieville, Barry, MI., were married on Feb 7, or 9th, 1983 in Plainwell, Allegan, MI. Witnesses were A. H. Fletcher and F. E. Rikerd.  Birthplaces of bride and groom were both NY. 1884 Michigan State Cenus, Prairieville, Barry, MI. Rowena is not on the census with her parents for the first time.  She was married in 1883.

1896 Barry , State of Michigan, Rowena Porter filed papers as Anthony Rogers' daughter  (Rowena Rogers Porter) for part of the Real Estate Property after her father's death.  On these Probate Records the land was to be divided between Henrietta Wilson 56 yrs. old of Plainville, Mich., Martha E. New 59 yrs. old of Belle Air, Mich; Josephine Markham 53, of Battle Creek, Mich; Hattie Chapman 29 yrs. old (daughter of Amelia Adalaide Rogers Chapman who obviously is dead), of Norton  Kansas; and Rowena Porter 49 yrs. of Prairieville, Mich.  (This document was just found in late 1994 long after the next entries were typed).

1900 U.S. Census, Johnston, Barry, MI. Ed. 44, Sheet 8, Line 42.  Rowena is on the census with her husband Charles Porter.  She is listed as age 46. Her husband Charles is age 40.  Rowena stated she had had no children and none had died. 1910 U.S. Census, Barry, MI. Soundex 005-0046-0195.   Enumeration district 46, Household 0195.  Charles is age 50.   Rowena's birth is Mar. 1854, but she was 5 yrs. old on the 1850 census, so it should have been Mar 1845.   Rowena is listed as 60 yrs. old on this census. (She was actually 65 because she was 5 on the 1850 census.)  She married late in life and her husband was obviously younger, possibly why her age has varied on the different census. (They are not on the 1920 Census).

Charles Porter

1900 U.S. Census, Johnston, Barry, MI, Ed. 44, Sheet 8 Line 42 Charles is
listed as 40 yrs. old.

1910 U.S. Census, Johnston, Barry, MI. Ed. 46, household # 0195. Charles is listed as 50 yrs. old.  They, Charles and Rowena,  stated they had had no children. Charles listed his father as born in England, and his mother as born in NY.  In Oak Hill Cem. in Orangeville, Barry, MI. there is a Edward N. Porter 1854-1922, and Mary R. Porter 1856-1928 and Earnest P. son b. 15 Jan 1892 and d. 4 Dec. 1905.  (This might be a brother).  In the same Cem. is Philip Porter b. 31 Jan 1826, d. 14 Jan 1892 and Mary b. 30 Dec 1831, d. 11 Oct 1913. (Parents?)  Charles' wife Rowena lived in Orangeville where these people are buried.  Philip and Mary--buried by them--(1) Albert N. d. 22 Dec 1869, 12 yrs. 11 mo, 22 days, (2) Cora d. 11 Apr 1868, 7 weeks and 2 days.  Ther is also a John S. Porter of Richland, MI.

826. Samuel N. Rogers

Samuel died at 11 years, 16 days of Typhoid Fever.  He is buried in Prairieville Cem., Prairieville, Barry, MI and the only one on the lot. There is a tall stone, now(1992) broken in three pieces  and one of the breaks is right where the engraving was.  It is barely readable, but it says, "Samuel, son of A & M Rogers, 13 Sept 1867".  A little ways away is a smaller stone designating the spot of his burial, but the little stone is unreadable. Checking the City Cem. Records, the lot was owned by Anthony Rogers, but neither Anthony nor Margaret are buried there.  Barry  records recorded Anthony's death as "Anthey Rogers" died in Prairieville, but his place of burial has not been determined as yet (1992).  He remarried in 1888 according to Barry  records. A very dilligent search has been made for Margaret's death and/or burial but none has been found. She is on the 1884 State Census, but cannot be found after that time. Samuel (who was named after Anthony's father) was Anthony's and Margaret's only son.

Death: Recorded in Book A p. 5, 1867.

378. Nancy Carpenter

History of Washtenaw County, Michigan, page 1324 for members of family, and of son's (J. Edgar Rogers') family.

1850 U.S. Census of York Twp., Washtenaw, MI. taken 14 Aug 1850, Film 443580, Salt Lake City, Family History Library.    In the home of Evan Begole 29 and Margaret 17, were:  Clark Rogers 35, Nancy (Carpenter), 33; Edgar 13; Mary 11; Jane 10; Ira 8; Spencer 5; Adeline 3 and Clarence 1/12.  Also a Mary I. Harris 17.   Clark, Nancy and Edgar show birthplaces of NY, but Mary and the rest were born in MI. (This could mean Clark and Nancy were in MI between 1837 - 1939).  Clark is shown farming 1500-1600 acres. (History of Washtenaw  pub. 1881 by Chas. C. Chapman &  said they came to Michigan in 1834.)    Clark's parents, Francis Rogers 67 and Mesilda 63 are also on this same census.  Hiram Caton 21 male, and Abigail Rogers 19 Female and Elenor Rogers 27 female are in the home of Francis and Mesilda.  They all show birth place as NY.

1860 U.S. Census of York Twp., Washtenaw , MI,  taken 23 July 1860.  Film 803563, SLC-FH Library,  Household #972/950, page 189, Clark Rogers 46 male b. NY;  Nancy 44, b. NY;  Mary 21, b. (Probably Nancy's son Hebron, which would be Mary's brother).

1880 U.S. Census of York, Washtenaw, MI, page 384, Household, #279/284, Rogers, Clark age 66.  He gave both of his parent's birth places as Rho. Nancy age 63 gave her birthplace as NY; Father's as unknown and mother's as CT. (This would be wrong.  Father was Mass, mother RI--these have been verified. Nancy left home very young and probably did not remember) In same home is Anthony Bruch, 22 who gave his birthplace as Rhine Proineer. Again, not sure what that means, but it might explain the Rho by Clark's father's birthplace.

On that same census (1880) is her daughter and husband, Kanouse, Walter 39; Mary 41 wife; Peter F. male 14 son;  Clark D. male 8 son; Oscar male 6 son. Also in the home was John Brombs, b. Nancy's daughter, Madeline, married Nancy's sister's (Rowena's) son, Daniel Pierce from New York. They were 1st cousins.  It is said they met at a family reunion, fell in love, and got married.

C. which stood for Robert C. died the next March.  P. M. was Phila, but the family records have Phila A.  Phila, named for the grandmother on her mother's side, was the third child and the first one to live past her first year.  Out of six children, only three lived to maturity.  Edward died at birth, Mary, the second child, was only 12 days old when she died.  R. C. died at about 8 or 9 months. William and Martha's child #5, William Arthur, and child #6, Phebe A., lived.

Information from Mrs. Merle Fox, Canandaigua, NY, said, "Arthur, Phila and William are in E. History of Livingston County 1687-1881 974.785 H 2sm p. xxii, gave information about early residents of the county.

A visit was made to the E. Springwater Cem., Livingston , NY. ( Directions are on Hwy 21 to Wayland, take Co 37 at or near Tabors Corner Rd. Some mileage on the note was 5.7-3.8 = 1.9 miles ) William and Martha are buried by William's parents, Robert and Phebe McNair Carpenter. They share the same tombstone with their engravings on the different sides of the same stone. (Robert and Phebe Carpenter graves were moved here by William from Naples.)  Martha's parents Joshua and Phila Jones, are buried very close.  The graves are way back from the road, in a corner. A house is over the fence and can be used to help locate the gaves.  Robert and Phebe's are almost unreadable in 1992, but William and Martha can still be read on the stone.  With the help of shaving cream and a squeegee in 1995, the names could all be read.  We also received more information about William's family from one of his descendants and from Helen Fox, Canandaigua, NY.

Hellewell, Aptos, CA, and Elma Carpenter,Battle Creek, MI, to Northern Michigan to search for Phebe's daughter, Estelle, and Margaret's step-daughter, Martha New.  Both were found, as well as Phebe's son, Melvin.  We had found them on a record earlier in a library, but we were not sure it was the same Melvin Jones.  It was.  They are all buried in a Cem. right outside of the town of Bellaire in Antrim County, MI.  The death records were in the Antrim County Court House, but it was Melvin's second wife.  On our way back to Battle Creek, MI, we stopped at the Allegan City Library and found an inquiry about John and Phebe Jones.  We were able to contact a descendant of Melvin's first wife, Walter Knoch Sr. of Cedar Springs, MI.  We
received a many names and dates of Phebe's descendants from him.  Estelle had no children but adopted one.  Melvin had a large posterity.

858. John Jones Jr.

1870 U.S. Census, Orangeville, Barry, MI. Film 552160,  John was 14 yrs. old. It was his name, John Jones Jr.. that led us to correct a family record. The family record had Margaret Carpenter married to John Jones, but it was easy to determine that her sister Phebe was the one who married John Jones by following the Census each ten years.  It took a lot longer, however, to determine who Margaret did marry, once  we had John Jones with the proper wife, Phebe.  A list of children of Phebe Carpenter Jones was sent to this typist, and with a John Jones Jr. it was easy to see her husband should have been John Jones Sr. rather than Mortimer as the family records had stated it (who was actually her son).

1884 U.S. Census, Orangeville, Barry, MI. Film 915281, Household 130/131 Mortimer T. Jones 40 b. NY, parents b. NY; Mary A. 39 wife, b. We hope we can find more information on this John Jones Jr.  We have very little.
