In 1960 Mrs. Melvin (Ollene) Eatherton was of M-37, Bedford Twp., according to her father's obituary.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Tues., March 28, 1995, p. A2. Ollene M. (Sult) Eatherton, 67, of White Pigeon, and formerly of Battle Creek, died Monday, March 27, 1995, at the home of her daughter.  She was
born July 29, 1927 in Battle Creek to Otto and Floella (Green) Sult and was a lifelong resident of the area until moving to White Pigeon five years ago. In the 1950s she was employed at the Hop Shop.  She later was employed at Weston Biscuit  for four years and as a housekeeping supervisor at Arrowood Nursing Center, where she was promoted to dietary supervisor.  She retired in 1990 after 13 years of service.  She was a member of Urbandale Baptist Church and Mottville Community Church. . .She married Melvin "Bud" Eatherton in 1946.  He died in 1989.  Also preceding her in death were brothers, Winfred, Leon and Elmo Sult. Surviving are sons, James and Michael Eatherton of Battle Creek and Michael Blake of Kansas City, Kan.; a daughter, Deborah Frame of White
Pigeon; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters, Betty King of St. Ann,Mo., Carolyn Turner of Battle Creek and Marita Irving of Battle Creek, who was raised by Mrs. Eatherton and her husband.  Services Thursday in Urbandale Baptist Church.  Burial in Bedford Cemetery.

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Monday, Feb. 20, 1989, p5A. Melvin L. "Bud" Eatherton, 68, of 23921 N. Bedford Road, died Saturday, Feb. 19, in Leila Hospital.  He was born in Chesterfield, Mo.  He served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater of operations with the Army from 1944-45 and received a Purple Heart.  He came to Battle Creek in 1945 as a patient at Percy Jones Hospital, returned to Missouri after the war and returned to Battle Creek in 1947 from St. Louis.  From 1957-74, he was a lift-truck operator with New York Air Brake, Galesburg, now Hydreco, a division of General Signal.  From 1977-85 he was maintenance supervisor at Arrowood Nursing Center.  He was a lifetime member of Sgt. D. L. Fisher Disabled American Veterans Post 121 and a member of Urbandale Baptist Church where he was an usher several years.  He enjoyed the outdoors, deer and rabbit hunting, fishing, vegetable and flower gardening and traveling.  He also enjoyed helping neighbors.  Surviving are his wife, the former Ollene M. Sult; sons, James L. and Michael B. Eatherton, both of Battle Creek, and Melvin L. Eatherton Jr. of Effingham, Ill.; daughters, Deborah J. Frame of White Pigeon and Kathleen King of Dietrich, Ill.; a foster daughter, Marita Irving of 126 Iden Lane; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ben Eatherton of Minnesota; and a sister, Thelma Hunter of Leslie, MO. Services will be Wednesday at Urbandale Baptist Church.  Arrangements are by Bachman Hebble Funeral Service.

In 1997 Melvin L. Eatherton Jr. of Effingham, IL, is listed as a half-brother to James L. Eatherton according to James' obituary.  He must be a son of Melvin L. Eatherton from a previous marriage; therefore, Ollene Sult is not his mother.

April 11, 1998, visit to Bedford Cem..  There is a military marker which reads, "Melvin L. Eatherton, PFC U.S. Army, WWII, Aug 20, 1920 - Feb. 8, 1989." There is also a granite marker which reads "Eatherton, Ollene, 1927-1995; Melvin L., 1920-1989."

Dowling - Dean Samis, 60, of Dowling, died Saturday, June 29, 1991, after drowning in Barry County's Clear Lake.  He was born in Reed City and attended Battle Creek Public Schools.  Mr. Samis owned Dowling Body Shop for 12 years before retiring in 1989.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He was married to the former Sally M. Arnett on Oct. 27, 1949, in Marshall, and she survives. Also surviving are sons, Darrell W. Samis of Iron Mountain and Jason Samis of
Grand Rapids; daughters, Rebecca Youngberg and Deanna Dams of Iron Mountain, and Leila Samis of Mattawan; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Lela Green of Kalamazoo; brothers, Lewis Samis of Hastings, Daryl Samis of Minnesota, and Kevin Samis of Delton; and sisters, Shirley Martin and Bonnie Vicole of Kalamazoo, Nancy Cotton of Delton and Marla Sulter of Texas. Sally Mae Arnett

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Tuesday, 23 Sep 1997,p4A.  Sally M.(Arnett) Samis, 62, of Dowling, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at home after along illness.  She was born Jan. 17, 1935, in Barry County to Ward and Bertha (Reynolds) Arnett.  She was employed as a nurses' aide and worked at Tender Loving Care and in the home health field.  She also had worked in the intensive care units of several area hospitals.  She married Dean Samis on Oct. 28, 1949. He died in 1991.  She was also preceded in death by brothers, Ward, Robert and Richard Arnett; and a sister, Delores Reed.  Surviving are sons, Darrell Samis of Dowling and Jason Samis of Battle Creek; daughters, Becky Youngberg of Iron Mountain, Deanna Dams of Dowling and Lila LaBar of Mattawan; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Arnett of Battle Creek; and sisters, Genevieve Underwood of Augusta, Mildred Elliott and Sharon Osborne, both of Battle Creek.  Services Wednesday Sept. 24, 1997 at Morning Star Christian Center.  Arrangements by Royal Funeral Home.  Burial at Dowling Cem..

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Monday, 16 Jan 1978, p. 1B. Manslaughter charged in fatal car-truck crash.  A 28-year old Battle Creek man has been charged with manslaughter stemming from a Saturday night car-truck accident in which a 55-year-old man was killed and three other persons were injured.  Abie J. Ackley of 133 Wheeler Ave. was pronounced dead at Leila Hospital shortly after the accident reported at 10:10 p.m. on Leonard Drive at West Michigan Avenue.  He was employed as a furnace and air conditioning equipment installer by Cooperative Fuel & Supply   Ackley is Calhoun County'f first traffic fatality of 1978.  The county recorded 21 deaths in 1977.  Injured were Ackley's wife, Eleanor, 41; a stepson, Gary L. Reneau, 15, and Norman Brown, 14, of 144 Hussey Avenue.  They were treated at Leila Hospital and released. Donald Bain of 290 Sigel Avenue was charged with manslaughter after he was arrested at his home several hours after the accident.  Bedford Twp. Police Chief John Bell said that Bain fled on foot after the accident and police attempted to track him in the snow, but lost the trail.  Police found identification in the truck that led to the Sigel Street address. According to the accident report, Ackley had stopped on Leonard Drive preparing to turn onto West Michigan Avenue.  Police said that a pickup truck eastbound on West Michigan left the roadway and slammed broadside into the driver's side of the Ackley car.  Bain was arrested at about 1 a.m. Sunday at his home. He was questioned and taken to the city jail.  Twp. police contacted a county prosecutor who authorized the warrant charging Bain with manslaughter.  The warrant had not yet been issued this morning.  Ackley was a native of Battle Creek and a lifelong area resident.  An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Marshall Moose Lodge, 676. Surviving are his wife, the former Eleanor Brown, daughters, Mrs. Becky McKellepp of 93 N. Cedar Ave., Mrs. Sandy Smith of Wisconsin, Terri Jo Martin of Forest Lake, Minn. and Dawn E. and Shelly Ackley, both at home; a step-daughter, Marilyn Kay Reneau of Kalamazoo; stepsons, Michael J. Reneau and Ricky L. Reneau of Battle Creek and Gary L. Reneau, at home; his mother, Mrs. Della Ackley of Chester; eight grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Lucille Sanders, Mrs. Walter (Betty) Goff, Mrs. Wesley (Geraldine) Kilbourne and Mrs. George (Joyce) Hewitt, all of Bellevue, and Mrs. William (Bertha) Harmon of Vermontville, and brothers, Delbert Ackley of Battle Creek, Gerald of Nashville and Mick of Des Moines, Iowa.  Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday (Jan 18, 1978) at Farley Funeral Home.  Burial was in Ceresco Cem..


7153. Dawn E. Ackley

Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Thursday, September 16, 1982, p.1. Three Die in Delton car Crash.  Delton - Three Delton area residents were killed Wednesday evening when their car ran off Orchard Road and slid into a swamp, striking a tree about one mile east of Delton.  Barry County sheriff's deputies said the victims were Rick Herbert, 22, of 4975 Orchard Road, the driver of the car; and passengers Dawn Ackley of 10416 Brickyard Road and Jesse Walock, 20, of 10296 Brickyard Road.  Ms. Ackley's age was not available from authorities.

She was born Sept. 23, 1965, in Battle Creek and moved to the Delton area three years ago with her family.  She was a senior at Delton-Kellogg High School.  She is survived by her mother, Eleanor Ackley of the Brickyard Road address; sisters, Becky McKellepp of Battle Creek, Marilyn Reneau of Otsego and Shelley Ackley at home; brothers, Mike and Rick Reneau, both of Battle Creek and Gary Reneau, at home, and her maternal grandfather, John Brown of Battle Creek.


5285. Maurice D. Clemens

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Friday, Nov. 5, 1982, p. 2B. Maurice "Mike" D. Clemens, 60, of 433 N. 24th St., who was wounded in action five times in World War II, died Thursday in Leila Hospital after a long illness.  He was born in Sherman and moved to Battle Creek with his family when he was 3.  He enlisted in the Army in July 1942 and was wounded in action five times in battles in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. Twice after being wounded, he bandaged himself and kept on fighting, taking over for wounded command officers.  Three times his wounds were serious enough to require lengthy hospitalization, and he returned to battle after each hospital stay.  In November of 1944 he received a battlefield commission as a second lieutenant.  In addition to being awarded Purple Heart medals with Oak Leaf clusters, he also was decorated with the Silver Star with Oak Leaf cluster, and three times was cited for gallantry in action.  Before the war he was employed by Clemens Delivery Service, owned by his father, and after the war he was employed as a driver for the Carlings Brewing   He retired in 1980 from Atlas Sales Inc. after 21 years of service.  He was a member of Club 27, VFW Post 565, Gen. George A. Custer American Legion Post 54, DAV Chapter 7, and the Polish National Alliance.  Surviving are his wife, the former Geraldine Taylor; a son, Daniel Clemens Jr. of Battle Creek; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Mina) Johnson of Oklahoma City, Okla.; his mother, Carmen Clemens of  Battle Creek; a sister, Mrs. Jerry (Carolyn) Turner of Battle Creek; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.  Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Royal Funeral Home.  Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. Burial in Reese Cem., Springfield, MI.

Information received March 1998 from Ella Swartz Haven, of Battle Creek, great-aunt of Margo.  Margo died in March 1995 of lupus.  She never married.

Information received February 1998 from Leona's aunt, Ella Haven, age 98, of Battle Creek.  Leona died last year.  She lived in Florida and was married to Charles Morris.  Leona's children's names received from her aunt, Ella Haven.


5317. Roy J. Harleston

OBITUARY.  Battle Creek Enquirer and News, Wednesday, May 14, 1997, p 4A.  Roy J. Harleston, 65, of Battle Creek, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, in Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, after a two-month illness.  He was born Nov. 22, 1931, in Battle Creek, to Carl W. and Vera L. (Swartz) Harleston and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1951.  He was employed at Clark Equipment  from 1951 to 1958, the Springfield Police Department from 1958 to 1964 and Kellogg  from 1964 until retiring in October 1987.  He was also a school bus driver for Lakeview and Hastings schools.  He married Vivian L. Brott on Jan. 17, 1953.  She survives.  Also surviving are daughters, Brenda S. Dix of Kalamazoo, and Linda J. Harleston of Kingston, NY; and one granddaughter. Member of Moose Lodge 676 in Marshall.  Services 1:30 today at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home.  Entombment:  Memorial Park Cem..


Frank D. Burrows

OBITUARY.  Frank D. Burrows, 73, of Delton and formerly of Battle Creek, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at home.  He was born Aug. 11, 1927, in Battle Creek to Frank J. and Ida (Benedict) Burrows.  He attended Delton Schools.  He served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 14, 1945 to Feb. 3, 1947, as a private first class.  He served in the Army of Occupation of Japan.  He was employed as a mechanic at three auto dealerships in Battle Creek before joining Clark Equipment   He was employed as a mechanic in the modification department for 18 years before the company closed.  He also was a part-time farmer at his farm in Barry Twp. in Barry County.  He married Gloria A. Eckler April 12, 1957, in Lansing.  She survives.  Also surviving are daughter Julie A. Nanninga of Battle Creek; two grandchildren; brother Louis Burrows of Banfield; and sister Florence Sharer of California.  Preceding him in death were a son, Frank W. Burrows, in December 1997, and sister, Margaret Holderman.  Member of the Eagle's Lodge and American Legion Post 298.  He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing and part-time farming.  Visitation Monday at Richard A. Henry Funeral Home (Battle Creek).  Memorial service at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ft. Custer National Cem. with Military honors.
