James Edward "Ed" Carpenter

Like his father and many of his relatives, James Edward "Ed" Carpenter was a farmer. He first married Dora Skeen in 1900, and following her early death, married Mary Jane Holder Perry in 1918. Mary was a good step-mother to Dora's children, Harry and Mary, and they loved her dearly.
The following obituary was saved by his daughter, Mary Carpenter, who gave it to her nephew's wife, Margaret Ann Gray Carpenter.

Dies at Chilhowee
James Edward Carpenter, 83 year-old retired farmer, died at 2:45 p. m., Jan. 13, 1953, at his home in Chilhowee.
The funeral was held at 10:00 o'clock Thursday morning at the Community Methodist Church, the pastor, the Rev. Ralph Young, officiating­. Mrs. Wm. Inglish and Mrs. Iva McReynolds, accompanied­ by Mrs. Minnie Turner, sang "Whispering Hope," and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Pallbearers were Chas. Hancock, M. A. Ficke, Barney Adams, Arthur Dameron, Wayne Thomason and Grover Mosley. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery at Walnut Grove, Mo.
Mr. Carpenter was born March 17, 1869, at Nashville, Ill., a son of James Richard and Sarah Jane Shelton Carpenter. He was reared in the Chilhowee community and in 1900 moved to Walnut Grove where he lived until 1932. He then returned to Chilhowee where he farmed and raised stock until re­tiring.
He leaves his wife, of the home; a daughter, Miss Mary Carpenter, of Denver, Colo.; and a son, Harry L. Carpenter, Little Rock, Ark.
Mr. Carpenter was a member of the Methodist Church at Walnut Grove.

Dora Skeen graduated from Morrisville College (Missouri) on June 8, 1892. She married James Edward ("Ed") Carpenter on January 10, 1900, in Pearl (Greene County), Missouri. They had three children:
o Harry Lee Carpenter
o Mary Carpenter
o Richard Edward ("Dick") Carpenter (who died at age 6 months)
The following text is from one of several obituaries written about her:
Death of Mrs. Carpenter
Mrs. Dora Carpenter of Harold, died shortly after midnight, January 30, 1912, at the Springfield hospital where she had undergone a serious operation two weeks previously. The body was taken to Walnut Grove and the funeral was held Wednesday morning at the M. E. church. The remains were laid to rest in the new cemetery She leaves a husband, Edward Carpenter; two children--Harry, aged 11, and Mary, aged 10; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Skeen; one sister, Mrs. Etta Staley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; her mother-in-law who lived with her at the time of her death; and a circle of friends to mourn her death. Mrs. Carpenter was converted at the age of 14 years, joined the M. E. church at Pearl, Mo., where she labored until death. She lived a consistent faithful life; so gentle in spirit; so kind in disposition and affectionate. To know her was to love her and those who knew her best loved her most. She has one sister and brother and a little son who have preceded her to the better land. Mrs Carpenter was 43 years, 1 month and 3 days old at the time of her death.

DIED--August 8, 1906, little Richard Edward, six months old son of J. Ed and Dora E. Carpenter, at their home near Walnut Grove, Green county, Mo.
Mrs. Dick Carpenter, grandmother of the little one, left at once for their home. All their many friends will join with us in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.

DIED.
Little Dick Carpenter, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Carpenter, died at the home of his parents, near Walnut Grove, on Wednesday, August 8. The little one was born on February 2, 1906 and was only six months old, but he was the pet of the household and his going has left a vacancy in the family circle that never can be filled. The funeral was conducted at Cave Springs, on August 9, by Rev. Allen, of Willard, and the little form was tenderly consigned to the embrace of Mother Earth.
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Carpenter wish to extend their heartfelt thanks to their many friends for the sympathy and kindness shown during the illness and death of their baby.

Isaac Carpenter, born 15 Mar 1869 and died 14 Jun 1946 was the son of James and Missouri Jane Carpenter. (Isaac was my granddad.) Isaac married Annie Grimsley on 24 Mar 1891. Annie was born 7 Mar 1873 and died 27 Nov 1964.
