809. Erastus Doty Griffis

1860 U.S.Census, Royalton Twp., Niagara, NY.  Census taken 14 Jul 1860.  Household 285-297.  Thomas Griffith 58? male, Betsy 49, female, Erastus is 9 and in his parents home. (Notice the census taker spelled the last name as Griffith, but his brother William, in a household of his own, spelled his name Griffis.)

A note from descendants said,"Cameto, Mich 1865 from N. Y."

1870 U.S. Census, Athens, Calhoun, Michigan , film 552165, Erastus was in his mother's (Betsy's) home.  He was 17 years old. (His father may have died by this time, as he was supposed to have died in 1867.) In Church Records in Lockport City Building, Niagara , NY, Betsy and Thomas were given "letters of recommendation" to their next church, so we feel Thomas, his father, did die in or around 1867.  (Personal research Sept. 1995 in Niagara , NY.)

"This family came from New York State (near Buffalo) during late 1860's".  Thomas, the father, died in 1867; and we do not know if the family moved after his death or that he died shortly after arriving in Jonesville, MI.  Wife, Betsy did come to the Pentwater area, (after spending time in Athen, Calhoun, MI.)  with her sons and is buried in the North Weare Cem..

Erastus Griffis married Julia Daggett (b. Mar 18, 1855, d. Oct. 16, 1927), of Jonesville and at least one son, Earl was born there.  Orlo H. Griffis was another son.  His birth place was given as Riverton Twp.  He also had a daughter Belle who married a Squire and lived in this area.  They attended school there during the 1890's." Written by Shirley Dempsey Reinke, daughter of James V. Dempsey who was the only son of Alma Griffis and Simmie L. Dempsey.  Alma was Duane's & Martha's daughter. Duane was Erastus' brother.

1880 U.S. Census, Soundex, Film # 447356, Riverton Twp., Mason, MI. Vol 17, Ed. 169, Sheet 9, Line 10.   Griffis, Erastus D. age 26 b. NY, parents b. NY; Julia, wife, 24 b. Wisconsin, parents b. NY; Earl R. son 4 b. Mich; Edna E. dau. 2 b. Mich.; Betsy (Carpenter) Griffis, mother, age 69, b. NY.  Betsy was not in the home in 1900.  Family records said she died 12 Sep 1892 in Pentwater, Oceana, MI.  This has now been verified in 1994.  She is buried in N. Weare Cem., near Pentwater, Oceana, Michigan, but her death is recorded in Mason   They lived on the line between the two counties.

Erastus' occupation was "a cooper", one who makes barrels, and a farmer.

1900 U.S. Census, Riverton, Mason, MI. (Soundex Vol. 51, ED 55, Sheet 4, Line 95)  Erastus 46, b. Mar 1854, b. NY;  Julie, wife, b. Mar. 1855, 45 b. Wisc;  Bell, dau, b. Sept 1883 17, b. Mich;  Roy N, son, b. Feb 1884, 16, b. Mich.; Orlo H, son, b. Jan 1886, 14, b. Mich.; Leo A. son, b. Jan 1893,  7, b. Mich.

1902 in The Pentwater News, Fri., Sept 19, 1902: " E. Griffis moved to Mt. Clemens to run a Boarding House."  Not sure if the E. stands for Erastus or his son Earl, or someone else.

In a personal interview on April 10, 1994, Erastus' descendants stated that Erastus was supposed to have had a brother who died of starvation in Libby Prison. (This was possibly Henry O. Carpenter who died in the Civil War.  This was not known in 1994, but was validated with new research in Sept. 1995.  There was no mention of a prison, just an accidental gun shot wound.  See his, Henry O's. file)

Another record said Erastus died in Ludington, Mason, Mich.  We did not find his death record either county.  It may not have been recorded.

In N. Weare Cem. Oceana, MIch. Lot 3 Sec 2, Buried by Erastus D. 1852-1944, and Julia 1855-1927 was Orren Griffis 1914-1916. 1855 NY State Census, Naples, Ontario County,  New York,  Adelaide (Camille Adelaide), age 16, was in the home of her parents.

1868 married George Thomas Standish, of Onatario , she was residing in Naples, Ontario, NY.

1875 NY State Cenus,  South Bristol, Ontario County, New York  taken 4 June.  # 511, Standish, George T., 42, b. Ontario, NY, married,  speculator; Camelia A., 36, wife, b. Ontario, NY; Dora,  5,  child,  b. Ontario, NY; Edna, 1/12,  child,  b. Ontario, NY.  Henry Perrin,  25,  servant,  b. CT; Jennie Carpenter 18, boarder, b. Ontario, NY. (Jennie is a niece of Camelia A. Carpenter Standish.  Jennie's father, Robert and Camelia were brother and sister.)

1892 NY State Cenus, South Bristol, Ontario County, New York.  Standish, George T., 58, US Citizen farmer; C. Adilade (spelled this way), 54; Dora A., 23; Edna A., 17; George Q., 16; Barnes, Welling H., 21, male; Burton R., male, 18.

1912 Newspaper article in possession of Helen Fox, Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York.  Mrs. Camilla Adelaide Carpenter Standish, wife of George Standish, of this place, died May 14, at the home of George B. Hickox, District No. 3, Canandaigua, where she went with her daughter, Mrs. Hickox, for a visit more than two weeks prior to her death.  She had been seriously ill for two or three years, but not confined to her room, with a complications of heart and other diseases.  Mrs. Standish was the second daughter of Robert and Plexana Wood Carpenter and was born Oct. 8, 1839, near Seneca Point.  Robert Carpenter was a sturdy, athletic farmer, a good thinker, reasoner and talker, and moved to West Hollow [also called Naples] while his family was young.  Mrs. Standish was one of 12 children, seven girls and five boys.  A son, Napoleon Bonaparte, gave his life for his country in the Civil war.  He lived to return from prison. [no, he died in prison of starvation].  Mrs. Standish cared for her mother, a paralytic, until her death, and afterwards took a mother's place in her father's family.  After her marriage, the youngest sister, Jennie, lived with her until she married Charles Hall, now of Canandaigua.  Mrs. Sarah J. Saunders, of Clay Center, Kan., is a sister.  Mr. and Mrs. Standish were married Feb. 11, 1868, and have been residents of this place more than 40 years.  Mrs. Standish was a faithful and successful mother to her three children, not deeming any privation of labor too much if it promoted their welfare or safety as to the physical, moral or spiritual nature.  She made her home a pleasant and safte place for children to come for their plays, and, as she grew older, a place to meet for practice, for social gatherings and church work and visits.  She was a mother to every boy or girl who entered her home as a helper.  Teachers in many states are ready to add their tribute of love, honor and gratitude for the safe and elevating influence they found with her.  Strangers, neighbors, the sick and poor, always found a friend in her and one with an open head to do all or more than her part in any public service for the good of the community.  No other woman for miles around would be missed as she will be in this place.  She was a sound reasoner and one seeking her advice knew that the matter would not be repeated.  She was true and loyal to her family, friends and associates in the highest sense.  She never tired to save herself at the expense of others, and never had an easy time.  She was a member of Y. P. S. O. E., Sunday school, W. O. T. U., grange and Library association.  She was one of the entertainers at the last meeting of the W. O. T. U. held at Mrs. M. N. Wood's the first part of April, and attended the last grange meeting, held here in April or May.  She was one of the best housekeepers, cooks, and managers, a woman of strong affections, but not emotional, and rearely gave way to impassioned _______.  (Couldn't read last word at end of column, might be feelings), "Friend after friend departs,   Who hath not lost a friend?   There is no usion here of hearts   That hath not here an end.  Were this vain world our only rest, Living or dying none were blest."     Funeral services were held at the home of George B. Hickox on May 15.  Rev. L. L. Taylor, of Canandaigua, officiating, and on May 16, at the Bristol Springs church, Rev. S. T. Harding, of Naples, officiating.  Burial was at Coye Cem..  Besides her husband, she leaves three children and five grandchildren.  Her daughters are Mrs. George B. Hickox, of Canandaigua, and Mrs. A. M. Wilkins of Bayville, L. I. [may be Long Island]  and a son, George Q. Standish, of this place.  [Since Camille's mother's name was Wood, one wonders if Mrs. M. N. Wood was a relative.]

DEATH.  Death certificate issued by the Div. of Vital Statistics, Kansas  State Board of Health.  #14 1100. Certificate 12 110 Standard Certificate of Death #7. Sarah Jane Shadle, female, white, married, date of birth, Sept 3, 1848, born  in NY,  died 7 Nov 1918, 70y2m4d,  at City of Green, Highland Twp., Clay  KS,  occupation: housewife,  cause: apoplexy, father Nathaniel Carpenter (This is wrong.  Sarah's father was Rober O. Carpenter.  Nathaniel was her father's brother.); mother "don't know,"  burial:  Greenwood Cem., 10 Nov 1918, Clay Center, KS.  Informant:  Frank L. Barnes, Clay Center, KS.  Undertaker:  O. A. Smith.  (The informant is one of Sarah's sons.  He probably never remembered  his grandfather's name because  Robert O. died in 1871 when Frank was only 5-6 yrs old.)

In April 1999, Donna Hellewell, Aptos, CA, received a letter from Steve Kamm of Oklahoma City, OK, a descendant of Horatio Barnes' brother, Joseph Aden Barnes.  His letter states that the "couple began their family in New York, where their first three sons were born, Edgar E., Fred Mitten, and Wellington H., then sometime between 1871 and 1874 they must have moved west to Rockford, Winnebago , Illinois, where their fourth son, Burton R., was born.  At this time, Horatio's oldest brother, William E. Barnes, was living in Rockford.  Between 1875 and 1876 Horatio apparently took his family to Iowa where a fifth son, Frank Leslie, was born.  It seems they moved to Rockwell, Cerro Gordo , Iowa, where another of Horatio's brothers, Joseph Aden Barnes, had established his family.  Stella Barnes indicates Horatio moved to Kansas in 1787.  Joseph Aden is believed to have moved to Kansas about 1879.  As Horatio's last son, John W., was born in Kansas in 1879, the families may have moved together."  Stella Barnes was the wife of Donald Price Barnes, son of Frank Leslie Barnes.  Frank was Sarah's son.  Steven Kamm gave us much information on Horatio Barnes and Sarah Barnes Carpenter and their descendants.

Sarah's sister, Martha Allen Carpenter and husband, John Allen, were in Kansas in 1875; Sarah's brother, George W. Carpenter and his wife, Mary Olivia Latimer Carpenter; and Sarah's brother Ichabod Carpenter and his wife, Jennie, were also in Kansas in 1875.  This could be another reason why Horatio and Sarah moved to Kansas.

May 1999 - Visit to Greenwood Cem., Clay Center, KS.  Sarah is buried in Block 1, Lot 37, grave 7, Sarah J. Shadle, age 70,  Her marker reads:  Jarah J. Barnes, wife of R. E. Shadle, 1848-1918, 70 y. At the base is "Shadle."

"Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie" Kansas Counties: Riley County Genealogical Society, Manhattan, Kansas.  c. 1976.    Clay  page 15. Short article on Horatio S. Barnes gave information on his wife and children, with dates.  Information was from Mrs. Fred Bohnenblust, Longford, KS, gdau-in-l.

Received Apr. 1999 from Steven Kamm of Oklahoma City, OK who is a descendant of Horatio's older brother.  The following is from his file: "One of the many children of George and Elizabeth Palmer Barnes, Horatio was born in 1846 at Meads Creek near Campbell, Steuben , NY.  He was raised in Southern New York State.  In her application for a Mother's Pension (based on son Loren's Civil War service), Elizabeth indicates Horatio was in poor health at the time--mid 1800's--and unable to help his parents or sisters.

"In 1865, at the end of the Civil War, Horatio married Sarah J. Carpenter, of South Bristol, Ontario , NY.

"The couple began their family in New York, where their first three sons were born (Edgar E., Fred Mitten, and Wellington H.)  Then, sometime between 1871 and 1874, they must have moved west to Rockford, Winnebago , Illinois, where their fourth son (Burton R.) was born.  At this time, Horatio's oldest brother, William E. Barnes, was living in Rockford.

"Between 1875 and 1876, Horatio apparently took his family to Iowa where a fifth son (Frank Leslie) was born.  It seems they moved to Rockwell, Cerro Gordo , where another of Horatio's brothers, Joseph Aden, had established his family.

Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie:  "Stella Barnes indicates Horatio moved to Kansas in 1878.  Joseph Aden is believed to have moved to Kansas about 1879.  As Horatio's last son (John W.) was born in Kansas in 1870, the families may have moved together.

"Horatio of Kansas City is mentioned as a brother to Mrs. C. W. Dearlove (nee Hannah Barnes), in a May 7, 1885, Prattsburgh (NY) society page.

"According to his great granddaughter, Bonnie Barnes Porter, Horatio died in Kansas in 1885.  After his death, Sarah married Max Sanders and lived near Broughton, KS, before moving to Clay Center, KS.  When Mr. Sanders died, she married Mr. Shadle."

Maxwell Sanders

Came to Clay  KS in early 1860's.  Had a brother Thomas, and Harry.   They were sons of Carew II and Sussanah Chart.

"Maxwell Sanders was born in East Grimsted parish, Sussex, England, in 1833.  He received his education there and was engaged in different occupations there unti 1851, whe he obtained a place on the police force in London, which he held four years.  In 1854 he resigned and came to America, locating in Ohio.  The next year he moved to Kentucky.  In 1859 he and his brother Harry went to St. Louis, where they worked some time.  In 1860 they moved to Riley county.  Several years later he took a fine homestead in what is now Clay Center Twp..  He has been married three times.  He has quite a large family, all of whom are married.  He owns as fine a place as there is in the vicinity.  Last fall he gave up farming and having purchased a nice residence in Clay Center is now taking life easy."  There was a picture of the two story home, but no name or  reference to the news paper or magazine.

Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie, Riley County Genealogical Siciety, Manhattan, Kansas p. 59.  After some of the same data above, it added some interesting information. ". . .In 1851, he obatined a place on the Metropolital police force was assigned to the palace, protecting Queen Victoria and her children.  Little Princess Marie, who later became the wife of a Romanian king, was the most lively of the Queen's children and Maxwell's favorite.  While in the Queen's service he wore a scarlet coat, and buttons with the Queen's coat of arms, and a hat with chin strap and white fez.      In 1854 he renounced his allegiance to England and Queen Victoria and came to Cincinatti, OH where he married Sarah Rachel Williams 14 Jun 1857.  (Then it gave her dates) The next year they moved to KY and their first child was born there in Newport.     In 1859 Maxwell and his brother, Harry, went to St. Louis where they worked some time.  Maxwell and Harry's parents, whom they had brought over, are buried in St. Louis.  In 1860 they moved to Milford, Riley,, KS and Maxwell was what they called "Lefteneant", appointed by the Gov. of KS.  Several years later he took a fine homestead in what is now Clay Center Twp.  At this location wagon trains changed or rested their horses.     Maxwell went back to KY in 1866, returning to Rosevalle in 1869."  Then it tells when his first wife died.  Then it gives the names of his children.  This data has been entered on the Family Group.

OBITUARY.  Rooks County Record, Oct 18, 1942 (Rooks County, Kansas).  Mrs. John B. Allen, Jan 3, 1852-Oct 11, 1912.  The friends and neighbors of Mrs. Allen were greatly shocked on Friday evening to learn that she had passed from their midst.  She was apparently in good health, though had complained of a little indigestion.  While preparing the morning meal Friday, she was suddenly stricken and was able to talk with those about her but a very short time.  With the words "Where is John?" she passed into a deep sleep, from which her loved ones sought in vain to arouse here, and at 5:30 o'clock breather her last.  The doctors called diagnosed the case as appoplexy.  Martha H. Carpenter was born at South Bristol, NY, January 3, 1852, being 60 yrs., 9 months and 8 days old on Oct 11, 1912.  In 1865 she moved with her parents to Michigan.  On Jan 23, 1869 she was united in marriage to John B. Allen.  They came to Clifton, Kansas, in 1871 and in 1901 to Rooks   To this couple were born five children:  Edward R., Edith L., Wallace W., Walter S. and Ben R. Allen.  Mrs. Allen is survived by her husband, her four sons, three sisters and one brother.  One sister, Mrs. Sarah J. Sanders of Clay Center, was present at the funeral.  The only daughter, Edith, died in May of last year.  Separation from her had been a grief to the mother and may have hastened their reunion.  Mrs. Allen was a modest, unassuming woman, her virtues being best known to those who were nearest her.  She lived and made home beautiful for her family; and she will continue to live in the hearts of its members and shed a holy influence on their lives so long as memory endures.  The bereavement falls with especial force upon the husband, as they were constant and inseperable conpanions.  Mr. Allen has not be engaged in active business for several years, so they have shared life's joys and sorrows in closest partnership.  The funeral service was conducted by Rev. C. M. Snyder, pastor of the M. E. church, of which Mrs. Allen had been a member for many years.  The address contained many comforting assurances, and the music rendered by the quartet, Mrs. J. L. Foster, Mrs. Matthews, I. H. Look and O. O. Osborn, was very beautiful.  Six friends of the family officated as honorary pal bearers, but the active pall bearers were the four sons who tenderly bore the flower-laden casket with its previous burden from the house, and at the Cem. placed it in its final resting place.  Besides the -- and family, a large number of other relatives, grandchildren and friends were present.

Mrs. Sara Saunders, sister of the late Mrs. J. B. Allen, arrived Sunday from Clay Center to be present at the funeral.

Records sent by her great-great-grandaughter, Katherine Maynne Allen Lentz of Grayville, Illinois, Oct. 27, 1994. She included a picture of John and Martha Amelia Carpenter Allen's wedding picture and a family group picture along with other information on her great grandparents, Wallace and May, and their children.

Copies of some notes were sent to Elma Carpenter from descendent Mayanne Lentz in 1995, Mayanne had written, "Some of Aunt Merle's notes."  Great Grandfather, John R. Allen (Scotch) at one time owned where Detroit, Mich. [is] now--moved to Kalamazoo.  Had 4 boys and 2 girls, Henry, JOHN, Scott and Fred;  girls: Nettie and Lydia.  His wife's, great grandmother was French.  Henry went to Calif. (one son by first marriage).  JOHN BENTLEY [ ALLEN] was Scotch and French, Md. Martha Amelia Carpenbter, who was English.  Great Grandfather Carp (probably means Carpenter) died down near Abilene, 3 marriages and 13 children. [This would be Robert O. Carpenter]  Then she listed their children:  George Washington Carpenter, America Vespuchia, Bonepart, Icabod, Martha, Sarah, 3 in Civil War, one died in prison in war, didn't know  name.  Gr. grandfather's first name and great grandmother Carpenter's maiden name not known.  (This would have been Robert O. and Plexana Wood Carpenter).  Uncle Icabod's wife niece of John Brown.

Mayanne also sent a notice of Martha A. Allen's death, a newspaper article about John B. Allen's death and other family group sheets.

Also included with the above was this typed article, and although long, should be preserved.  "This story was told to Merle Allen Lambert by her father Wallace Allen.    John Bently [Allen] and Martha Amelia [Carpenter] were married Jan 23, 1869 in Michigan.  Their first son Edward was born in Michigan.  All of their household goods was lost in the Chicago fire. John and Martha moved to Kansas in 1871 and homesteaded on Chapman Creek near Abilene.  They made what furniture they had from timber. Their daughter Edith was born there in 1872.  Their first crops were eaten up by grasshoppers.  Martha's brother, George, lived with them for awhile, he was a preacher.  He married a school teacher Lattinier? [Latimer] from around Abilene.

"John and Martha moved to Iowa in 1876 where he worked for a farmer. Walter and Wallace were born there in the Spring of 1877.  Soon after they moved back to the farm in Abilene and stayed three or four years. Then  they moved to Clay Center, Kansas where they ran a second hand store.  Bently was born while they were in Clay Center.  They moved to  Vining in 1883, built a house and started a restaurant.  Lived there awhile then rented a farm between Vining and Clyde, Kansas, one and one half miles east of Isaac Yoder's farm.  They lived on the farm two years or so, then moved back to Vining for a short time and traded their restaurant for a hotel and livery stable in Clifton, Kansas.  Stayed there a few years, sold Hotel and moved to a farm Northeast of Clifton near Andrew Foster's father's farm.  John and Martha moved to Stockton, Kansas in 1901 and bought the homeplace."

MARRIAGE.   Branch County Clerk, Coldwater, MI. Book E, page 240, #242. Married 23 December 1879 at Sherwood, MI, Robert Carpenter 21, b. NY, residing in  Sherwood;  and Sarada Place, age 16, b. NY, residing in Burlington;  officiant:  Manton E. Sawin, JP;  witnesses:  Isaac Sawin and Celenda Sawin of Sherwood. (We think Robert was 25 at the time of his marriage.  The record was checked again in 1999.  It says age 21.)

1880 U.S.Census, Clay Center, Clay, Kansas, Vol 4, Ed 23, Sheet 23, Line 24, taken 1 June.  6/6.   Robert Carpenter age 26, and wife Sarada 16, are in the home of his sister Martha and John Allen. John and Martha have four children at this time.  (See her record).  Robert may have been visiting or helping his family members because he is listed as a laborer.  Seven days later, June 8, he is in his brothers' home, George W. and Olivia Carpenter, household #200/217, in the same town, so Robert and Sarada were enumerated twice on this same census. He is not listed as a laborer, but as a brother and Sarada as a Sister-in-law.  Robert is age 26, Sarada is now age 17. (This is how we learned that Robert Carpenter belonged to the family of Robert and Plexana Carpenter.  The three children, Robert, Martha, and George, were enumerated together on the 1855 and 1865 New York State Census and the 1860 U. S. Naples, Ontario County, NY, Census.)

1895 Carpenter Reunion, Athens, Michigan.     A Robert Carpenter, signed in as a relative, when there was a place to sign for visitors.  He attended several reunions of the Calvin L. Carpenter Family in Athens, MI. in the 1890's.  Calvin L. Carpenter and Robert O. Carpenter Sr. were brothers.  In 1895 Robert O. (Jr.) gave his age as 39.  We now know this is Robert O. Jr.  His father, Robert O. Carpenter Sr. was re-married twice in Barry County,  Michigan, and Plexana, his mother, is buried in Cressy Cem. in Prairieville, Barry County, Michigan.  We know several of the family were in this general area.  At this particular reunion, cousins came from many areas, even as far away as New York.

DEATH.  Branch County Clerk, Coldwater, MI.  Book C. p. 241, #5252.  Died 3 May 1922 at Union Twp., Robert O. Carpenter, age 68y4m6d, b. NY, occupation: farmer, father:  Robert Carpenter, birthplace unknown, mother:  Maxine Williams, birthplace unknown, Informant:  Mrs. Carpenter; buried 5 May 1922, Girard Cem., C. S. Bartlett, Undertaker.

On his death certificate Robert's mother's name on the death record is INCORRECT.  Her name was Plexana Wood, NOT Maxine Williams.  Apparently Sarada, his wife, gave the information and she was only 16 when they were married in 1879 and both of Robert  O. Carpenter's parents were dead, Plexana in 1867, Robert O. Sr. in 1871.  Sarada probably only remembered that the mother's name had an "x" in it, and that her husband had the same name as his father.  Unfortunately this caused a delay in locating his ancestors and proving other relationships.  The corrections could be made because Robert and Sarada were found in the home of his brother, George W. Carpenter, in Clay Center, Clay , Kansas on the 1880 U. S. Census.  This was the proof because Robert and Sarada were also in the home of Martha [Carpenter] Allen a few days later on the same census! Robert O. Jr.'s sister, Sarah (Carpenter) Barnes [later married Sanders] was also next door to George.  We know that Rober O. Carpenter Sr. and Plexana had children, Sarah, Martha, George and Robert O. Jr. [and others] and Sarah, Martha, George, and Robert O. Jr. were all there, together on that census.  In George's home he is referred to as a brother!  Sarada as a sister-in-law! In Martha's home he was listed as brother-in-law to the head of the household, John Allen, who was his sister, Martha's, husband.  Robert O. Carpenter Jr. had also been in Martha and John Allen's home in Allegan, MI in 1870, 10 years earlier.  Also Sarah [Carpenter] [Barnes] Sanders attended Carpenter Reunions in NY and in Athens, MI which is a further proof of relationship.  Robert O. Carpenter Jr. also attended the Athens, MI Carpenter reunions.  We hope the death certificate for Robert O. Jr. can [and should] be corrected.)

822. Jennie P. Carpenter

1860 U. S. Census, Naples, Ontario County, New York, Frances (Jennie) age 3, female, is in the home of her parents, Robert O. and Plexana Carpenter. (Plexana is spelled different ways on different census.)

1865, NY State Census, Naples, Ontario County.   Carpenter, Jennie, age 8, is in the home of her parents.   Thus Frances and Jennie must be the same person as she is listed as Jennie or Jennie P on other census. (Could her name be Jennie Plexana?)

1870 U. S. Census, York Twp., Wastenaw County, MI.  There is a Jennie Carpenter, age 13, in the home of Clark and Nancy (Carpenter) Rogers.   This is believed to be this Jennie because Nancy's brother and Jennie's father, Robert O. Carpenter, Sr. is believed to have gone to Kansas.  (He is son of Robert Carpenter and Phebe McNair, but he also has a son Robert.)  Robert and Nancy Rogers are brother and sister.  By 1870 Jennie's mother, Plexana Wood Carpenter is dead (1867), and had been buried in Prairieville Twp., Barry County, Michigan and her father died the next year after this census (1871).  Later she returned to New York because she married Charles Hall and lived in New York.

1870 U. S.Census, Hope Twp., Barry County, Michigan.   Cora was 2 years old and in the home of David and Mary Bailey.  70/71  Bailey, David, 49, b. NY; Mary A., 35, b. NY; Booth, Ella R., 12, b. NY; Carpenter, Cora M., 2, b. NY.  The Bailey's were witnesses to Robert and Melissa's wedding in 1866.  Cora's mother, Melissa, died 9 Feb 1868 , and her father remarried.  His new wife, Emily Hallet,  filed for a divorce which was never granted as Robert O. Carpenter died a year later.  We have not found a relationship for the Bailey's but it is likely there was one, as they are buried next to Cora's mother Melissa in the Cedar Cem. in Hope, MI. Descendants of Cora has stated Cora was raised "by an Aunt".  Mary Bailey died a few years after Melissa, perhaps they were sisters.

1880 U. S.Census, Hope, Barry County, MI.   Cora is not in the home of David Bailey.

1884 Michigan State Census, Hope, Barry County.   Cora is in the home of David Bailey.  #193/200, film 915281 viewed at the Salt Lake City, Utah  Family History Center.    Bailey, David, 63, b. Carpenter, age 16, were married in Morengo, on Jan 21, 1885.  This may not be  the same Cora, as "our" Cora would be 17 or 18, but errors are made in recording, so it should be checked further.  Witnesses were Charles Smith and Charles Mead both of Marshall.

David Bailey left money to Cora M. Vandenberg in his Will dated, 27 December 1898, and named his executor on 2 Feb. 1899 in Hope, Barry, MI.

On 8th day of Jan 1940 the last mentioned land is paid for and Cora M. Vandenburg signs as William is deceased.  She appeared on 8 Jan 1940, so William died before that time.

825. Amelia Adaladi Rogers

1850 U.S.Census, Tuscola, Livingston, MI, Film 443572, Adaladi (spelling on census) was 2 yrs. old and with her parents, Anthony and Margaret Carpenter Rogers.  She was Margaret Carpenter Roger's second daughter.

1860 U.S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI, Film 083536, household 139/123, Adaline (spelling on census) was age 13.

Barry  Marriage Records.  Amelia A. (Adaladi) Rogers and Albert B. Chapman (name really Adelbert) were married in Prairieville 4 Feb 1865. She is listed as the dau of Anthony Rogers.  Witness was Seth H. Chapman & Bowena (Rowena) F. Rogers of Prairieville. (We have a picture of this certificate.)

1870 U.S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI. Film 552160.   203207 Chapman, Adaladi, 24, b. NY;  Hattie age 4.  Her husband Adelbert Chapman is in the home of her 1/2 sister Henrietta Rogers Wilson and her husband David R. Wilson, as a laborer.  It was on this census where it was hard to read "Albert."  Now we know his name was Adelbert, it is easily read.

The 1880 MI census has been searched several times, but neither Adelbert, his brother Seth (who was a witness at their wedding) or their father Issac has been found, but they were all on the 1870 census in the Prairieville area.  (Adelbert's mother is buried in the Brown Cemetery in Orangeville, Barry, MI.  "Martha Rogers, wife of I.P. d. 10 Mar 1883, 62 yrs.)  Adelbert's brother, John, was buried in the Brown Cem. by his mother.  It said the father was in Kansas.

1896 Barry , State of Michigan, Rowena Porter filed papers as Anthony Rogers' daughter  (Rowena Rogers Porter) for part of the Real Estate Property after her father, Anthony Roger's, death.  On these Probate Records the land was to be divided between Henrietta Wilson 56 yrs. old of Plainwell, Mich., Martha E. New 59 yrs. old of Belle Air, Mich; Josephine Markham 53, of Battle Creek, Mich; Hattie Chapman 29 yrs. old (daughter of Amelia Adalaide Rogers Chapman who obviously is dead by 1996), of Norton  Kansas; and Rowena Porter 49 yrs. of Prairieville, Mich.

Hattie's marriage was found in Norton Kansas in 1886.  She married John Ruth, see her notes.  We are now looking for her children.

Adelbert B. Chapman

1850 U.S. Census, Gorham, Ontario, NY. Adelbert is with his family and is listed as age 6.  His brother Seth is age 4 and brother John is 3/4 of a month.  His father is Issac and mother Martha.

Marriage Records of Barry , MI. Book B-50 Film 100839(?).   Adelbert and Amelia A. were married in the home of Anthony Rogers on 4 Feb 1865.  Adelbert's name on that license was Albert which is incorrect. His brother Seth Chapman was one of the witnesses to the marriage. Amelia's half-sister Henrietta was the other. Albert (Adelbert) was age 21, Amelia Adaladi was 18 yrs. old at the time of their marriage.

1870 U.S. Census, Prairieville, Barry, MI. Film  552160, Household 203/207 Adelbert's wife Adaladi is listed as head of the household, age 24 with Hattie age 4, because Adelbert is enumerated in the home of his sister-in-law, Henrietta Wilson (Adaladi's half/sister) and brother-in-law David Wilson.  He was a farm laborer in their home, and is age 26. Charlotte Porter age 17, domestic servant, is in the home, also Mandame Willson, age 40, female. (Mandame died in 1871.)

Nathan Carpenter, (Uncle to Amelia Adaladi) the son of Robert and Phebe McNair Carpenter, and sister to Margaret, Phebe, Calvin, Robert and others, is living close, listed as Nathan, and his wife is Almira. (See his record.)

Seth Chapman, Adelbert's brother, is on the 1870 census in Prairieville also, age 20 (should have been 24 as he was 4 in 1850), with wife Alice B. b. MI age 19, (Alice is probably older too with a child already 3) with Burton age 3, and Lewis age 3/12.  Adelbert's father, I.P. (Isaac age 30 in 1850) is age 52, Martha age 48 (was 20 in 1850  in Gorham, Ontario, NY), son John 3/12 in 1850 is now 20, and another son Frank is 12.  They are all in Prairieville.

After 1870, Adelbert and Amelia cannot be found in Mich.  They are not on the 1880 census of Michigan Soundex, and his father and brother Seth are not either (Searched again in 1992).  Many of the 1880 Soundex Census of states around were also searched, but at that time his name was thought to be Albert, when it was really Adelbert, so they will be searched again.  It is believed that the Chapman family probably moved from the state. However, Adelbert's mother Martha, wife of I.P. is buried in the Brown Cem., Orangeville, Barry, MI. She died 10 Mar 1883, 62 years."

It is important to locate this family because if Hattie grew up, married and had children, that might be Margaret Carpenter Roger's only posterity due to the fact that Rowena had no children, and Samuel obviously didn't either because he died at age 11.  Adaladi may have had other children.

Marriage Records, Republic County Kansas.  Adelbert B. Chapman of Wayne, Kansas age 51 and Clara A. Shepard of Wayne Kansas age 41 married 22 Jan 1806, at Wayne, Republic  Kansas  Married by: E. A. Brunir, Minister of the Gospel.  Attest:  John A. Jacobs.

Germany.

1910 U.S. Census, Grant Twp., Republic  KS; Roll 742 #454; taken 25 April 1910, p. 141B; household 82-82. Chapman, Adelbert 66, b. NY; Clara 55 b. MA, Adelbert married 3 times;  married to Clara 14 years: md. 1896 She had 1 child; 1 alive.  This must be Naomi on 1900 Census.

1896 Barry , State of Michigan, Rowena Porter filed papers as Anthony Rogers' daughter  (Rowena Rogers Porter) for part of the Real Estate property after her father's death.  On these Probate Records the land was to be divided between Henrietta Wilson, 56 yrs. old, of Plainwell, Mich.; Martha E. New, 59 yrs. old,of Belle Air, Mich; Josephine Markham, 53, of Battle Creek, Mich; Hattie Chapman, 29 yrs. old, (daughter of Amelia Adalaide Rogers Chapman who obviously is dead before 1896), of Norton  Kansas; and Rowena Porter, 49 yrs. old,  of Prairieville, Mich.

From a researcher in Norton  Kansas, "John Ruth, West Union Twp. age 25, Father James, b. Illinois. First marriage, Hattie Chapman age 21, parents Adelfert (should be Adelbert) Chapman, Mother, Amelia Rogers." The researcher didn't find Hattie in Norton County Census, and looked again in West Union for Ruth 1885 & 1895, not listed. We are now searching for her children if there were any. Soundex for Kansas, 1900, 1910, and 1920.  Nothing  was found.

827. James Edgar Rogers

On the 1850, 1860, 1870 U.S. Census, James gives his birthplace as NY.

Clark, Nancy and Edgar show birthplaces of NY, but Mary and the rest were born in Michigan.  This would mean that Clark and Nancy were in Michigan between 1837 and 1839. Edgar's father, Clark, is shown as having, or farming 1500-1600 acres.   (History of Washtenaw  pub. 1881 by Chas. C. Chapman &  said they came in 1834.)
