GRAVE:
Dorothy Carpenter Gibson
Birth: 1 Jan 1920 Blanket, Brown County, Texas, USA
Death: 9 Nov 2010 (aged 90) Texas, USA
Burial: Meridian Cemetery, Meridian, Bosque County, Texas, USA
Memorial #: 61536807
Bio:
Dorothy Carpenter Gibson, 90, died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at Meridian Cemetery in Meridian, Texas.

Born in Blanket, Texas, on New Year's Day in 1920, to the late Thomas Mercer Carpenter and Dovie Ola (Ferguson) Carpenter, Dorothy earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a teaching certificate in special education at Baylor University. She played Lady MacBeth in Shakespeare's MacBeth and Blanche DuBois in Tennessee Williams' play, A Streetcar Named Desire, but she gave up her promising career as an actress in New York in 1946 to raise her children. She directed community theater, taught high school Spanish, and was the only certified speech therapist in the Connally Independent School District for many years. In the latter role, she went beyond the call of duty to provide material assistance to the low-income families of her students. Mrs. Gibson will be remembered as a poet, painter, and literary critic, mother and grandmother. She loved plants, animals and gardening, all reflections of her admiration for things wild and cultivated. She read widely and voraciously, loved learning, studied painting and philosophy, practiced gourmet cooking, spoke Spanish, and taught herself French, Hebrew, and piano. She was admired for her fine art, music, writing, and courage in defense of human rights.

Dorothy's husband, John Wheat Gibson III, a veteran of World War II and professor of music at Baylor University, preceded her in death; as did her brothers, Thomas "Tom", Winslow, Kermit "Kelly", Lewis "Dick", and Dale Carpenter.

She is survived by sons, John Wheat Gibson IV, of Dallas, and Paul Breuer Gibson and wife, Anne, of Waco; daughter, Jane Winslow Gibson and husband, Jim Carpenter, of Lawrence, Kan.; grandchildren, Todd Gibson, David Gibson, Amanda Molina, and Emily Gunn, all of Waco, Madeleine Gibson Hensley, of Taylor, Texas, Ruth Gibson, Callie Long and Joanie Honea, all of Lawrence, Kan., and Abigail Gibson and Jack Gibson, of Dallas; 27 great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.

MILITARY:
LEC became a Flight Officer (like a warrant officer) and was assigned to the 728th (not the 725th) Bomb Squadron which was part of the 452nd Bomb Group (Heavy) of the 45th Combat Bomb Wing which was also part of the US 8th Air Force. Lew Carpenter was assigned as a co-pilot in a B-17G four engine bomber that was named the "Feather Merchant" flying out of the airfield at Deopham Green, England.
LEC flew his last mission to an oil refinery target near Hamburg, Germany. After bombing the target the Bomb Group turned South West at 25,000 feet and was what they called the "Rally Place." That is where they were jumped by enemy FW-190 fighters and his plane was hit at 1205 hours. The plane was able to stay with the squadron until several other enemy fighters attacked once again. The bomber "Feather Merchant" fell out of formation to the right and was in a near dive while still being attacked by two enemy fighters when last seen at 1214 hours near Misburg. **
No parachutes were seen leaving the airplane and they did not return to base. The “Feather Merchant” and her crew was listed as missing in action (M.I.A.).
LEC was reported killed in action (K.I.A.) on 31 Dec 1944 when his bomber was attacked by an enemy fighter aircraft. One other member of the crew, a gunner, was killed, but seven (7) others in the aircraft were able to bail out before the plane crashed near Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Germany (About 100 kilometers or about 60 miles West South-West of Hamburg). All seven were taken as POWs (prisoner of war) and survived the war. The German military recovered two bodies from the plane wreckage and was able to identify his remains.
** BUT ... Misburg is 150 kilometers south and known as Misburg-Anderten near Hanover, Germany. Or could it have been Moisburg which is 30 Klicks South West? The later makes more sense!
The MACR 11231 indicates loss at 32 degrees North, 9 minutes, 9 seconds East.
32 degrees North, 9 minutes, 9 seconds East (32N 0.1525) is in Libya just east of the border with Algeria, and south of the Jebil National Park in North Africa!
52 North and 9, 9 East is near Saffron Walden or NNE of London, England.
Moisburg is at Latitude N 53, 24, 17.737 (N53 24.295616) and Longitude E 9, 41, 50.9802 (E9 41.84967)
Osterholz-Scharmbeck is at Latitude 53N, 13, 4756 (N53 13.792736) and longitude E 8, 47, 50.2881 (E8 47.838135)

NOTE:  A description of the 183rd combat mission of the 452nd BG starts on page 138. It describes a running air battle with 15-20 enemy FW-190 attacking in waves of 4 or 5 fighters.
Aircraft # 43-37644 piloted by Lt. Vicent S. Segers went into a slow spiral and did two slow rolls into the clouds with two enemy fighters after him, no chutes were seen.
On the 38 bombers and 4 PFF ships, 35 hit the primary target. Five bombers from the 728th Squadron were shot down. Seventeen (17) other American bombers had minor battle damage and 8 had major damage.
A direct quote from the report: "This war isn't over yet, it seems the Luftwaffe is still determined to rule the skies over Europe."

The 452nd Bomb Group flew B-17 Flying Fortresses from Deopham Green, Norfolk, from January 1944. The air crews hit strategic sites in Germany but also supported the movement of ground forces across Europe after D-Day. On 6 June 1944 itself, the Group bombed coastal defences before the landings. The 452nd Group was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for bombing a jet fighter base at Kaltenkirchen, northern Germany, on 7 April 1945, under intense pressure from enemy fighters and anti-aircraft flak.

History of the 452nd BG (H)
Constituted as 452d Bombardment Group (Heavy) on 14 May 1943. Activated on 1 Jun 1943. Trained with B-17's. Moved to England, Dec 1943-Jan 1944, and assigned to Eighth AF. Entered combat on 5 Feb 1944 with an attack against aircraft assembly plants at Brunswick. Throughout combat, engaged primarily in bombardment of strategic targets, including marshalling yards at Frankfurt, aircraft assembly plants at Regensburg, aircraft component works at Kassel, the ball-bearing industry at Schweinfurt, a synthetic rubber plant at Hannover, and oil installations at Bohlen. ...
In addition to strategic missions, the 452d supported ground forces and carried out interdictory operations. Helped prepare for the invasion of Normandy by hitting airfields, V-weapon sites, bridges, and other objectives in France; struck coastal defenses on D-Day, 6 Jun 1944. Bombed enemy positions in support of the breakthrough at St Lo in Jul and the offensive against Brest in Aug and Sep. Later in Sep, assisted the airborne attack on Holland. Hit enemy communications in and near the combat zone during the Battle of the Bulge, Dec 1944-Jan 1945.  ...

Flight Officer - US Army
Flight officer was a United States Army Air Forces rank used during World War II, from 1942 to 1945; the rank being created on Sep 10, 1942. On 5 November 1942 military glider pilots were commissioned flight officers after the completion of their training. The new rank insignia was nicknamed "the blue pickle".
The rank is equivalent to Warrant Officer Junior Grade (WOJG) which is today's Warrant Officer (NATO grade: W-1). Enlisted and aviation cadet trainees who successfully passed air qualification training were appointed as Flight Officers and served as rated pilots, navigators, flight engineers, bombardiers and glider pilots. At the end of World War II, the Army Air Forces discontinued the use of the rank of flight officer. All of the service's flight officers had either been promoted to commissioned officer ranks during the course of the war or discharged.  ...
