1860 U. S.Census (Records sent in 1993 by family descendants said Willis was born in Belvidere, CAHOUN , IL. so the following may be incorrect ) of Bonus, Boone, IL.  (Bellvidere, Boone County is close to Bonus). Willis is listed as Willie age 2, and in the home of his parents, William and Polly Carpenter. Census taken 28 June 1860. (This census was so difficult to read we may have coincidentally found a Carpenter family that almost matched.)

1870 U. S.Census of Prairieville, Barry, MI.  Willis is listed as 12 b. IL and in the home of his parents William and Mary (Polly is often called Mary).  This is not William Riley's second wife who was named Mary.

MARRIAGE.  Allegan County Clerk, Allegan, MI,  Vol. 5, Page 26, #376.   Wm. N. Carpenter ("Willis"), of Martin, MI, age 22,  b. IL, married Emma J. Warner of Wayland, MI, age 18, b. MI.  Married, 23 March 1883, at Plainwell, Allegan , MI. Witnesses: Frank E. Randall of Plainwell, MI and Ella Warner of Wayland, MI.  A. Churchill Roberts, Justice of the Peace.   (Although not given here, we know from other research that the parents of the bride were George Warner & Mary J. Smith.  Parents of the Groom:  William Riley Carpenter and Paulina Cronkhite.)

1900 U. S. Census, Gun Plain Twp., Allegan, MI. Film 1240698  Vol. 2, Ed. 10, Sheet 2, Line 32. Willis Carpenter, b. May 1857 (tombstone 1859), age 41, b. IL md. 17 yrs; Emma G., wife, b.Mar 1865, age 35, b. MI, md. 17 yrs; Morrell E. (should be Earl Merrill), son, b. Oct 1886, age 13, b. MI.  She said she had had only 1 child and 1 child was still living, so Morrell E. (Earl Merrill) was their only child. (See 1910 census).

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE.  Plainwell Enterprise, 14 Aug 1901 p. 8, col 1.    A very pleasant social event occurred last Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Carpenter of Argenta, it being the fourth reunion of the Carpenter family of this county.  (See Byron Carpenter file for 1899 and 1900 reunions). The porches were tastefully decorated with fags and streamers of the national colors, while beside of the house there were many beautiful flowers. At twelve o'clock dinner was served in the large dining room.  The tables were loaded with everything that makes up a delicious dinner. On account of sickness there was not so large an attendance as usual, but everyone seemed to feel that they were being royally entertained. Those present from Plainwell were Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Stratten, Mrs. Helen Carpenter, Fred and Charles Carpenter, Mrs. P. A. King, Mrs. Will Grable, Mrs. T. Maurice, Effie Francis and Ruth Maurice and Lila Dewey. A short sketch of the family history is as follows: Robert Carpenter came to this country from England, bringing with him his wife and two children.(We now know this is incorrect, as several ancestors were here before Robert Carpenter who married Phebe McNair). Eleven children were born to them in this country. (All 13 were born in Ontario County, NY).  In 1837 he was killed by falling from a wagon.  Nathaniel Carpenter, the third son, was a native of Connecticut for a number of years.  He may have followed the medical profession.   He was married to Almira L. Lewis in 18_. (The remainder of the article could not be read. It was a very poor film!)

1910 U. S. Census, Barry , MI,  Vol.5,  Ed.49,     #93. Carpenter, Willis age 30 (should be 50, his age was recorded wrong) b. IL. married . 27 yrs., father b. IL (not correct as William Riley Carpenter was b. NY, but lived in IL about 1860-1865), mother b. NY;   Emma J., age 45, b. MI,  father: b. Conn., mother: b. NY.   She said she had 1 child, and 1 living;  Earl L., son, age 23, b. MI, md 2 yrs; Edith O., age 20, b. MI, md. 2 yrs.,  daughter-in-law. (Earl and Edith had a child, Marion, who died at 5 months old the next year.) (Records sent by descendants in 1993, said they had 3 sons after Marion died.)

1920 U. S. Census, Barry  MI Vol 7, Ed. 60, Sheet 2, Line 35; Carpenter, Willis, age 60, b. IL; Emma, age 54,  b. MI; Warner, Frank BL(brother-in-law to the head of the house) 62, b. MI (We now know Emma had a brother Frank and a sister Ella, who was a witness at Emma's wedding.)

In May 1920 Willis was of Doster, MI according to his father's obituary.

OBITUARY.  May 26, 1932.  Willis N. Carpenter was born at Belvidere, Calhoun ,  Illinois May 17, 1859, and passed from this life early Monday morning, May 16, 1932.   Death has called one who will be greatly missed. All that living heart and hands could do for his recovery was of no avail. Only those who knew him best realized how patient he was through the thirteen years his health has been broken. On March 20, 1883 he was united in marriage to Emmigene Warner, to this union was born one son, Earl, of Doster. He leaves a sad wife, one son and three grandsons, three brothers, Henry of Plainwell, Byron of Shelbyville and Edd of Wayland and one sister, Anna Noble of Wayland also three half sisters Mrs. D. A. Woodward of Vicksburg, Mrs. Ella Scott and Mrs Frank Scherer of Kalamazoo and one half brother, Roy of Comstock and a host of friends.  The funeral was held at the residence Wednesday, May 18, at two o'clock conducted by Rev. L. D. Miles, pastor of Delton M. E. church, and laid to rest in Hillside Cem. at Plainwell  (verse followed).

DEATH.  Willis' death record from the Barry  Index is 1932, Book C-304. His wife Emma's is 1933, Book C-324.  Willis N. Carpenter, d. 16 May 1932, Prairieville, MI. b. 17 May 1959, Belvedere, IL. Father: Wm R. Carpenter, Mother: Unknown (Mother was Polly Cronkhite.) (Informant's name on our copy was blurred, but could be obtained). Willis was 72y11m29d at time of death.

Hillside Cem., Plainwell, Allegan, MI.  There are six separate tombstones alike in the corner of the Cem. where two main roads (outside of the Cem.) meet.  They are:  Willis N. Carpenter 1859-1932; Emma G., his wife, 1865-1933;  Henry C. Carpenter (Willis' brother) 1861-1946 & Sarah C. Carpenter (Henry's wife) 1863-1945; Earl M. Carpenter (Willis' son) 1886-1972 & Edith O. Carpenter (Earl's wife), 1890-1971. There are two children's stones, unreadable in 1993.  There is a death record in Barry  Index, B-234, for Marion E. 5 months old, parents Earl Carpenter and Edith Call.  This explains one stone. (This record will be researched to determine sex). The other child was a child of Henry Carpenter and wife Sarah.  They then adopted Bert.

Emmigene J."Emma" Warner

See husband's documentation. In 1900 and in 1910 she stated she only had 1 child.

DEATH.  Book C, page 324. Died 16 Feb 1933, 67y,11m, at Prairieville, Barry, MI.  b. 16 Mar 1865, Allegan , MI,  father: George Warner, mother: Mary J. Smith, both b. NY.  buried 18 Feb 1933. 1348. Henry C. Carpenter

1880 U. S. Census, Prairieville, Barry County, Michigan, Chase, Jesse, wm, 57, farmer; Carpenter, Henry, wm 20 laborer.

MARRIAGE.  Marriage record Index for Barry County 1882 or 1887 Book C-197 has a marriage record for Henry Carpenter and Sarah C.  Marriage was also recorded in old Methodist Church records:  Carpenter, Henry, age 22, married Sarah Carry (spelled this way), age 23, Nov. 27, 1882,  b. Barry , MI. Residence:  Prairieville, MI. Pastor: Farmes. Witnesses:  Chas. Chase and Louise Chase. (We know her name is Sarah C. Carey from her death record.  She died in Kalamazoo , but it is recorded in Allegan County also).

1900 U. S. Census, Plainwell, Gun Plain Twp., Allegan, MI, Vol. 2, Ed. 11, Sheet 4, Line 68. Household 100/101.  Carpenter, Henry, Mar 1860, age 40, md. 17 yrs; Sarah, wife, b.  Oct 1860, 39, b. MI, md. 17 yrs, 1 child, l living; Bertie, son, b. Feb 1887 (25th day), age 13, b. MI. (The original census was very difficult to read).  Family descendants sent information in 1993 and stated that they had a child that died, and they adopted Bert.

1910 U. S. Census,  Gun Plain Twp. Allegan, MI.  Charles H (Henry C. on some records, 46, md. once for 20 yrs., b. IL, parents b. NY; Sarah, wife, 45, b. NY parents b. NY, 1 ch, 1 living; Bert, son, age 23, b. MI. (Ages are not quite correct, as they should be about 50 & 49 according to 1900, & 1920 census). They have a son, Bert 23, which agrees with the 1900 census as Bert was 13 then.   Even with the descrepancies of their age on this census of 1910, we feel sure this is "our" family.) (Family records sent in 1993 said they had a child who died as an infant, and they adopted Bert.)

1920 U. S. Census, Allegan , MI.  Vol 2, Ed. 16, Sheet 4,. Line 48.  Household 117/118. Carpenter, Henry, age 61, b. IL; wife, age 59, b. MI (no name reported); Burton age 32. (Sarah Carey, his wife, died in the Kalamazoo State Hospital in 1945, possibly why she was not named.  Her maiden name was given on her death certificate in Allegan County).

Henry was of Plainwell, MI in May 1920 in his father's obituary, and also in May 1932 in his brother's (Willis) obituary.

Cem. Tombstone in Hillside Cem., Plainwell, Allegan, MI. Henry and Sarah are buried by his brother, Willis Carpenter and wife Emma, and their son, Earl M. & Edith O., Earl's wife. They have separate stones.   The stones are where two main roads (outside of the cemetery) intersect. The six stones are in the corner of the Cem.. The main road is the highway into Plainwell. Their lot is A-1  There is a very old child's stone that is unreadable in 1993, which we believe is the child they lost according to family descendant records in 1993.  There is a second child's stone which is also unreadable, probably Willis' son Earl and his wife Edith's.  They, Edith and Earl, had a child, Marion, that died at 5 months.

Sarah Carey

See husband's record for 1900, 1910, and 1920 Census Records.

Sarah's tombstone in the Hillside Cem., Plainwell, MI said she was born in 1863.  I also found a 1900 original census, reference Vol. 3, Ed11, Sheet 4, Line 68, that said she was b. Oct 1865, age 31. Her death record from the Kalamazoo St. Hospital said she was born, Oct. 1860 in Brooklyn, NY and was age 83y 1m 22d when she died 15 Dec 1945.  If this information for  age is correct, she would have been born in Oct. of 1862. Her tombstone said 1863. These descrepancies still remain.
